Sugar scrubs are my all time favorite DIY gift for a couple reasons. First, they take literally two minutes to make, even in big batches. Second, you can dress them up in cute jars with labels and ribbons to personalize them for the recipient and make a simple, affordable gift feel personal and unique.
If you’ve never used a sugar scrub before, do yourself a favor and make an extra jar to keep! They’re amazing exfoliants and leave your skin smooth, glowing and super soft. They smell pretty darn good, too. I used lavender and rosemary essential oils in this scrub for an herbal, floral scent that is so relaxing.
Supplies:
-granulated sugar
–unrefined coconut oil
–lavender and rosemary essential oil
-airtight glass jars (I love these tulip-shaped jars)
–tags, twine or other labeling supplies
Measure out 2 cups of sugar, a 1/2 cup of softened coconut oil and 5-7 drops of each essential oil. I softened the coconut oil for about 40 seconds in the microwave, just until it was soft enough to stir. This amount filled three 7 oz. jars.
Stir until well mixed and fluffy. Smell the scrub and add another drop or two of essential oil if the scent isn’t strong enough.
Spoon into clean, dry jars and seal. Decorate with the tags and a snip of fresh lavender and rosemary so the recipient knows what the scrub smells like!
You can write some directions on the back of the tag if you’re giving these as gifts. Just let the recipient know to use a spoon to scoop scrub out of the jar and keep water out of the scrub! These would make adorable stocking stuffers, and I could see giving a set of a few different scents as a larger gift to someone who could use a little pampering. A peppermint one would be perfect for the holidays! xo Kayleigh

That must smell deliciously!
I believe this is technically four ingredients ????. But seriously, I’m all about sugar scrubs. I keep one on my counter and have given them as gifts. I have hesitated to add essential oils bc of sensitive skin issues (I use the scrub on my face), but maybe I’ll do a test portion and see how it goes.
Mmmm I make a lavender scrub all the time but never thought to add rosemary! This sounds divine.
Perfect gift idea! I was looking homemade scrubs and here you are with this awesome blogpost!
Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness, I bet this would smell DIVINE. And major kudos on the packaging, too. There’s something so romantic about glass jars, twine, and tags, isn’t there? These turned out beautifully!
This is such a cute gift idea! I especially love the packaging! I’m probably going to have to make this for myself as well since the cold winter weather isn’t doing my skin any favors.

Wonderful tutorial! How long do the scrubs keep for? If I made them now, would they still be fresh for Christmas day?
Hi Katy, as long as they’re well sealed they should be just fine! They really only start to go bad when water and other contaminants are introduced into the scrub, which is why I recommend using a clean spoon to mix the scrub and scoop it from the jar instead of hands. After it’s been opened for a while, you’ll know if something’s off by the look/smell!
Mmm, I can smell the deliciousness from here!

Is there something I could use instead of the coconut oil, I am allergic to it.?
Hey Barb!
I personally make a really similar scrub with different organic carrier oils. Instead of just coconut oil, I love to create an oil blend of Almond (my Hold Grail oil), Rose hip Seed, Grapeseed, Apricot Kern, Evening Primrose, Jojoba, and Argan oil. I always also add a small scoop of unrefined Shea Butter, which my skin loves and works well with the oils and sugar to create a pudding texture. If you can’t do nut oils give Shea a try! Hope this helps
Hi Barb, I sometimes use almond oil and it works like a charm!
What a perfect Christmas gift, love the idea! I can almost smell it!
