Lately I have been SO thankful for any sister time Elsie and I have been able to find together. Having a big sister for support has been an important part of my emotional health since middle school.
And everyone knows it's so much easier to talk about life over coffee or while browsing at your favorite store. π
Emma's wearing: shirt/Target, flannel shirt/F21, skirt/H&M, tights/Nasty Gal, boots c/o Seychelles, purse c/o R.Riveter, hat/Walmart (hunting section-ha!)
Elsie's wearing: Dress/Urban Outfitters, Blazer/Target, Boots c/o BC Footwear.
Elsie is also the kind of shopping companion that will hold up a super cute, but super short skirt or jumper and declare, "This would look perfect on you!" Sometimes I feel like she almost likes shopping for others even more than for herself. Almost. π
Over the years we've developed a sort of sister ritual. It's not all that unique or specific to just us (I'm sure a lot of best friends do this too). We will just go shopping and maybe grab a quick coffee and talk about whatever has been going on in our lives. It's funny because I bet you would think that since we work together we do this all day at work, but there just isn't usually time. So we make time to talk and listen to each other. And a little shopping never hurts either.
What about you? Do you have any rituals with your best friends? xo. Emma (and Elsie)
P.S. And a big thank you to Staxx and Aviary for letting us take pictures in your establishments. You rock and we love your businesses!

You are lucky to have one another =) My “sister” has been my best friend since we were 10 and now we’re neighbors and having babies at the same time and our husbands are besties. It’s kind of a dream. We have “family dinner” at least once a week where we all cook together and bicker and laugh. It really is a little family. We dream of having a compound one day. That’s a joke. We’re a family, not a cult.
Love spending time with my beautiful sisters!
Seeing your sister ritual makes me miss my best friend very much! It’s especially hard, because during the last few months of our senior year of high school we spent so much time together exploring the city before we had to fly to different states for college (thankfully we’re in the same country as each other) -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
I used to have lots of rituals with my friends on Saint Martin (a tiny little island in the Caribbean sea) since then, we’ve all moved to other continents.. We’d used to meet in a small restaurant in the bay we were all working and living in during our lunch hours. We’d be feet in the sand, eating and chatting under a gazebo… Maybe have one cocktail before going back to work! Once a week we’d all go to this place called ‘El Rancho del Sol’, we’d drink Desperados beers and share Kebob pizza’s. We chose to eat in the garden, because everyone else chose to eat inside at night (no sunlight, no view) and those beers forced us to make Rancho night our “private talk” night!
Or we’d just meet up at someone’s home and all bring something to drink or eat… We’d talk all night while our guys worked the late shift.
I miss my girls!!
Now we’re meeting on Skype. While one eats lunch, another drinks wine π
This year, when my sister asked what I would like for my birthday, I said “A date with you!” She cleared her busy schedules, left the kids to her husband and we got to spend a whole day together in dusty thrift stores π Best gift ever! That and the nice mirror she got me. Yeah, I was spoiled!
Posts like these make me sad that I never had a sister growing up. Having a brother had its own different perks (I think it gave me a more adventurous spirit), but I think it would’ve been nice to have both a brother and sister.

This post makes me really miss my sister! Sadly, we don’t live close to one another. Also, love that you got that hat in the Walmart hunting section. I never would have guessed that!
That sounds wonderful! My grandmother and her sister live next to each other and all the extended family used to have Thanksgiving together when I was growing up. It was awesome!

Sisters are the best kind of friend.

Ha! Yes. I’m not a hunter (you probably already guessed that) but I was looking for something that would make me more visible when I go running outside. It’s getting darker earlier so staying visible even in my neighborhoods not-so-busy streets isn’t a bad idea. So, I got a bright hat to run in. π

So cute – sisters are such a gift. It’s amazing that you have such a strong and successful partnership and are so work focused you need dates. Love that work ethic and family bond. Beautiful!

Such cute shots! It’s good to have some rituals together π

I have different rituals with different friends! A few of my friends and I like to go eat Vietnamese food together, while another group likes to get beers after work on Friday nights. One of my best friends and I like to have dinner, talk, put on a movie or TV show, and craft or do our nails (and sometimes we make box mix strawberry cake together, this goes back to our college dorm days). Until he moved west, my former boss and I went to a concert together every year & had beers. My sister and I love to cook together and watch our favorite 12-year-old-girl anime together at our parents’ when she’s home for a holiday or a family thing. Thanks for letting me share. π
This makes me think of my sister. She is 10 years older then me and we live 3,000 miles away from each other, but the minute we are together, it’s like I never left. I can’t wait to have these moments with her. You two inspire me to work with family & keep that love going forever! I love this blog.

My sister has recently been asking me to see a few movies with her and lately I’ve been skipping her requests and now I’m wishing I hasn’t. We won’t have all of this free time to hang out in a couple f years when e both move out of our parents home. I think coffee and shopping dates are the perfect sister outing activities π
I’ve recently started reading your blog and I’m lovong it! My sister and I are still in a bit of a love/hate relationship from when we were little but I hope we one day end up as happy as you two π
I hope one day me and my sisters can be this close <3
Ah! Love this.
You two look gorgeous and I love how close you two are. When my best friend and I have a day off together we like to take more time in preparing a meal together be it breakfast or dinner. Coffee dates are a must as well and we like to throw in some gilmore girls episodes in every now and again π
First of all, Emma, I absolutely love your hat. My fiancee and I are preparing to move from our condo in the city to a home in the country and with short [and cold] winter days, I have been starting to pick up a few pieces of bright outerwear.
I really enjoyed reading this post. While I did not have a [biological] sister growing up, I was blessed with a best friend since we were nine months old, and she filled the role perfectly. While some things have changed, neither of us will turn down the opportunity to have movie night and eat cherished childhood snacks.

Oh, this makes me want to have a sister even more than before! That last picture where you’re sitting in a cafe is absolutely lovely. It seems like you some beautiful rituals together!

My best friend and I of 20 years get together on Sundays to prep meals for the week. This week we focused on prepping meals to freeze and then put in the crock pot. We both try new recipes each week and then share them with each other if they end up being really tasty. And we do this all while sharing mimosas and rocking out to 80’s music. :]
You two are looking so cute. π
Happy Monday, Lali
This really makes me miss my sister, who lives 14 hours away from me π
I love this, Reminds me of me and my sister. I have to make a coffee date with her this weekend!
Emma, I am loving these boots! I am wondering if you could do a post honestly evaluating what brand of shoes hold up the best over time? I have had horrible experiences with inexpensive boots (the faux leather starts cracking or peeling, in one instance the sole came off and snow got in!) I am ready to invest more in a great pair of boots like the ones here but want to know if they’ll stand the test of time.
Great post! Of course me and my best freind have a lot of rituals. And my sisters and I also. Drinking coffee is one of them, too. My besties and I prefer tea. Midnight phoning is a standard, too.
Have a great week!

I love this post, and can totally relate. I don’t know what I’d do without my sisters. Although we see each other often, we definitely need to make time to go to a coffee shop in order to catch up. Thanks so much for sharing!

You both look perfect.
I love this! I wish my sister and I lived closer (I am in LA, she is in Chicago) so we could do things like this more than a handful of times a year. I usually will grab dinner and a movie with some girlfriends once every other week – it’s a nice way to blow off some steam and catch up!

How nice! π I just posted a new tradition/ritual me & my mom started doing. I call it “Monthly Mom Day!”. Since I am married, I don’t spend as much time with her, so we decided to spend a whole day out of the month together. It’s so nice to get away & spend quality time! My mom is my best friend! π
I don’t know why this made me so emotional, but it did! My little sister lives in the US, while I currently am living in Chile. We make time for “coffee dates” via FaceTime, but I can’t wait to see her again in December when they visit. I think it is so important to set aside specific times with best friends and/or family members, significant others, or spouses, whether in person or “face-to-face” with technology. Great post! π
You two look gorgeous! Pretty sure we need a tutorial on that awesome top knot! My best friend and I always go fabric shopping. There is a fun place north of us half an hour. We usually grab a drink and head up. It is fun to exchange photos as the projects come to life.
That last shot is lovely! It really is!

I mostly like to go shopping with my mom, sister and boyfriend!
with my friends… rituals always involve alcohol!

My best friend spends so much time working all hours these days because she is freelance so this is how we do our catching up we go to our favourite coffee shop and order breakfast and catch up then we potter the charity shops and then to our favourite stores. I do miss her alot but we’ve worked around it over the years. π x
yes, wearing pants. π
Aw so sweet. I’m close with my sister too!
man all my life i have wished for a sister haha! i hope i find that one best friend soon where i can do this π <3
I always like your “sister” posts. Finding time to spend together and talk gets harder as you get older, move farther away and have more responsibilities. It’s great that you two can and also get to work together.
This is a total non sequitur, but where are Elsie’s pants?!:-) I can’t imagine trying to move around in something cut that high.
I am an only child, and forever wanted or needed a sister…sisters are the best kind of friends…you guys are fortunate..

I haven’t got a sister but I love to catch up with my brother over video games or a game of Clue! Also, I have a pact with a bestie to just get together once a month and drink tea for hours by the window. So simple but so perfect π
I love going thrifting with my friends. I usually can never find something on my own, but everytime I bring friends along I find the most beautiful outfits or decorations for my house. I think it’s great you guys find time to get together and encourage each other. π

I’m 17 and my sister is 21, but she’s like my best friend really. Everytime she comes over we just lay in my bed and talk- it’s not really a ritual I guess, but it’s just something we do catch up with each other π
I love that you two still make sister time for each other even though you work together all the time! π
Your rituals with your sister are so cute! Makes me want to do the same with mine π And I have two sisters π

You’re lucky to have sister rituals like this! I never wanted a sister (I’m the youngest of three brothers) until I got to the age of wanting a female shopping companion or someone to giggle about boys with, or steal clothes from, and then I changed my mind. But by that time my parents were way past childbearing age, haha!
You both look adorable!

Such a sweet post. I have a younger sister who is my best friend. We live far apart so when we get time together it’s always coffee and shopping when we have time together. Even now we go shopping and take selfies and send to each other when we question our find or to show a great find. Nothing like bonding over shopping no matter how far apart you live.

It would be lovely to have a close female friend like this. I have a sister but we are not close.
I never had sisters but was lucky to have close by cousins that held that role for me. Shopping and food is always a perfect girl ritual. Something so therapeutic about it…

my husband thinks since we have a boy and a girl we are done with the babies. Little does he know that Im not stopping until my daughter has a sister. Its a necessity
that’s so lovely. π i don’t have a sister close to me or my age, but i do have a best friend who basically takes that place! we live in different cities (especially now that i moved 600 miles away), so it’s been tough finding time to hang out together.. but when we do, it’s always like old times!
oh, and lovely outfits! very cute. π

You are fabulous as always ladies – loved your post. It put a smile on my face

It’s so nice to see sisters be so close! Me & my sister, Casey, have been best friends since we were little. We do everything together. We even have a new blog up together! We’re novices at how this works, so we would love for you to check it out and maybe give us some tips & tricks!
I think our favorite ritual would be taking one day out of our busy schedules and going somewhere new and making a full adventure out of it. We try to do it every now and then.
Love the blog! You guys are doing a great job!
You two are just adorable and love that you are so close to one another…not all sisters have that relationship. Love to shop, drink coffee and drink wine with my bestie!
Thanks for this post! My sister and I are pretty much the same, we love shopping and also having movie nights together. However, as we’re not living close to one another, we try to make things happen as often as we can and talk to each other on the phone.
I also do the shopping and coffee hing with my best friend, we get to talk a lot then, plus we like cooking together.
Even though I am with my best friends almost everyday, we don’t bond and talk that much about our lives since all of us are busy in school. I was with them only 4 hours ago but i miss them already π thank you for sharing this though! π
It really is awesome to have a sister. That I totally agree! My younger sister and I have this ritual of thrift shopping for clothes. I actually am the one who loves to hold up stuff and say “this will look good on you.” π After that we always end up grabbing some ice cream. Most of the time (if not cake).

This is so cute π I’d love to have a sister to hang out with. Very happy with my two brothers. You guys look awesome.
wow,i love this feeling.together with friends or family.
wow,i love this felling
When my big sister got her license we started to go Christmas shopping for the rest of the family, just the two of us. But because we didn’t have a lot of money it was mostly for inexpensive materials for DIY gifts. But, just because we loved the holiday spirit, we would go to the mall, listen to the music, watch the people, and sip on lattes. Some of my best memories. π
