I am pretty sure that I’m not alone in this sentiment, but I looooove the look of marble. My dream would be a marble countertop in my kitchen (although I know they aren’t as stain resistant as other stone options), but since that renovation is still a long way off, I’ll have to get by with my marble cheeseboard instead. I was wondering what else I could make marble to add that textured look to a kitchen space. Since almost everyone has a utensil holder somewhere in their kitchen, I thought that would be a great place to start.
The key to this makeover is finding a realistic marble contact paper (I chose this one) to use on your utensil holder. I just cut a piece that was a little taller than I needed, applied the contact paper to the outside of the utensil holder (thankfully, you can peel if off and start over if your placement is wrong), and then ran an X-Acto knife along the top and bottom edges to trim the excess paper. Done!
Of course, the great thing about marble contact paper is that it is a fraction of the cost of real marble, but you still get the fancy look of the real thing. What other items would you cover with the contact paper? xo. Laura

Contact paper ROCKS. I’ve used it to cover the inside of my cabinets before, which adds a fun pop of color or pattern that’s still really easy to wipe down with a sponge when cleaning. It’s particularly great for kitchen decor project like this!

why not just spend a couple bucks more and get a real marble crock like this one: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/white+marble+utensil+crock.do?
I love this! I found a “marble” paper towel holder at TJ Maxx that would match this perfectly. For contact paper DIYs – do you ever have trouble with bubbles or the paper losing stick when you remove it to make corrections? Just curious!
Thanks for sharing!

Love this simple yet beautiful idea! Would you happen to know if, and how, you can clean it (since I tend to clean things often after my cooking-experiments)?

sneaky sneaky… I like!
Hi Theresa!
Sometimes I do, but I think a contact paper with a pattern is more forgiving for that sort of thing. I didn’t have much trouble with bubbles with this paper and I adjusted it several times and it stayed really sticky still 🙂

What a great idea! I’ve been wanting a marble slab of some sort to shoot some food photography on, and using contact paper on a piece of plexi glass or even plastic would be such a great and inexpensive alternative. I never thought about a DIY solution to that problem! This post came out at just the right time! 🙂

That’s a great looking utensil holder:) I have covered a piece of cardboard so that I can have a nice service or background for some food shots on my blog. It does the trick!

Barbaridades!
Help me make Barbaridades even better!
The contact paper turned out looking really good! I’m impressed. 🙂 My old roommate used contact paper to cover up the ugly, old glass door to our shower in college. (4 girls, 1 bathroom, 1 shower with a see through door = awkward. Contact paper solved that problem and made it much cuter!)
so simple!

When you do decide to redo your countertops don’t disregard marble. There are great sealant products that have 15-25 year warranties against stains making marble a great choice for everyone and the sealant is very reasonable, we sell our 15 year Dry-Treat warranty for just under $300 and have not had any marble countertops that have even had to have stain removal. =)
Love this!! As for your future counter tops..never fear! I got the best of both worlds with Silestone’s “Lyra” looks & feels just like carrera marble without the drawbacks!!!
I’m thinking this could work on my bathroom counter as a cool update!
Wow! It couldn’t be any better!
How come brilliant ideas always hit brilliant minds like Laura?! Lol
Anyways it seems like I should grab my favorite print of contact paper and start working, hmmmm!
