We are a little over halfway through the tour of my home (we’ve already done the dining room and kitchen, living room, and outdoor area), and I’m so excited to share our bedroom space with you today.ย I’m a big believer in not having any tvs or work-related distractions where I sleep. I feel like this practice trains my brain to see the bedroom as a peaceful space dedicated to slumber, and since we are so good at sleeping in, I feel like it must be working. Like seriously, your brother in college gets up before I do on a Saturday. It’s the only sport I’m good at, and I take great pride in my work.ย
You can see in the before photo that there wasn’t much happening in this room when we first moved in. Brown shag carpet, beige walls, and we had just had the “popcorn” texture scraped off the ceiling. All in all, it really needed a fresh dose of personality. For the first year and a half we had robin’s egg blue walls in this room. We loved the color, but we only have two small windows in the corner of the room, so it’s pretty dark most of the time. I thought white walls would give us the brightest scenario possible, and it did feel brighter once we switched colors.ย
We’ve only had our geometric headboard panels a few months now, but we love the fresh vibe that it adds to the room. I was slightly worried that my husband would think there was too much pink in the space, but he’s got good taste and he loves it all too. Here’s a factual tidbit for you: pink was considered a boy’s color up until the 1940s because it was “decided and stronger” while blue was considered “delicate and dainty.” Who knew?? I love the moody star and moon scene on our duvet cover as well. It’s like an upside down skylight at all times.ย
One of my favorite home DIY projects is this skull bookend set that I made last year when all the Halloween decor came out. I recently painted that Z Gallerie mirror a light pink to give it a fresh feel and I love how it came out.
Vintage signage is the best. I’ve hung the font above the plant shelf in several spots in our house (like above our bar cart in the living room with glitter paper behind it) and I want to use ourย DIY tutorial to make more. I had my eye on that silver skull for a while and Todd got it for me last Valentine’s Day. Love it!
I passed over this giant cow skull for several months at a local vintage shop and every time I would stop in front of it for ten minutes deciding if I should buy it or not. Finally I did and I’m crazy for it. I think I was worried it would appear too Western for our style, but I don’t feel that way at all. Besides, he’s a little bit country, but we’re a little bit rock ‘n’ roll…so it all works out. If you’re assuming this bookshelf contains only the works of great philosophers, then you are correct! It’s packed to the brim with Calvin and Hobbes, Fox Trot, and Pearls Before Swine comic booksโall high indicators of a brilliant mind.ย
Although it’s better to have a small en suite bathroom than none at all, we had quite the problem with the door swinging into the already small bathroom. So this sliding door Josh built for us is a life saver! The bathroom feels so much bigger now, and I love the striped pattern I choseโso cute! We will share how we built that soon.
We love to lounge in our comfy Gervin chair and read or hang out with the cats. I always feel that no chair is fully accepted into the family until I see the cats napping on it, and this one is a winner. Also, how can you say no to a glitter smiley face pillow? I was so happy with how my DIY hanging globe planters turned out at the studio that I made another set so I could have them at my house too.
This gallery wall is just the right combo of prints to add a little bit of fun to our room. We are obsessed with Wes Anderson, so the Margot and Richie prints from The Royal Tenenbaums are perfection, and my brother’s talented girlfriend, Sarah, drew us my favorite quote from Moonrise Kingdom. While he’s mostly known to you guys as the Wizard of the Woodshed, our very own Josh Rhodes actually made the awesome ice cream print up top. My husband Todd’s favorite movie of all time is The Big Lebowski, so when I ran across this printย I knew I had to surprise him with it. He may have said that I was the best wife of all time when I gave it to him. But then again, I may have told him to say it because I was so pleased with myself for finding it. Details, details…
I have a few vintage hat boxes in my closet, but I thought it would be fun to make a spot to hang a few on the wall instead. These wire word hangers were actually pretty easy to create and I love using fun phrases in whatever I’m making.
You can see that the fur babies love to look out the window (I think they signed up for one of those neighborhood watches without telling me), so I have to keep stools by all the vantage points since we don’t have window ledges. Also, Todd and I were arguing over having a pendant light or a fan in the room (I hate ceiling fans), so I found this pendant/fan that was the perfect solution. The clear blades swing out of the top of the pendant when you turn the fan on and they go right back in when you just want it to be a light. Genius!
Overall, I love how this space is turning out, and I’m so glad that we finally got it finished. It’s only taken two years, but better late than never! xo. Laura

Hi! What is the large, tall, oval leaf plant in the corner of your bedroom? I love it!
You know, nowadays apartments are terrible here where I live, because they are half this bedroom with short walls and one window. This rooms before also seemed to be small, but the after picture shows all its potential.
And the bathroom sliding door? That should be international default item in suite architecture! How much space can be saved that way – and it doesn’t even need to be a into-the-wall sliding door. Great ideas and amazing decor โฅ
I absolutely love how everything looks! The plant corner looks amazing as well. I should definitely try having indoor plants at home.

Laura,
Your space is absolutely gorgeous! I must say, though, finally an ABM post filled with cats!!! I love that you put stools near the windows, the largest part of planning a space for me is considering the cat’s wishes!
Again, beautiful space.

Okay seriously, this is over-the-moon GORGEOUS! What a beautiful, sweet space. Obsessing over that blush pink mirror, too.
I love the black and white, and how open the room looks after you changed the colouring. I like how its quite neutral but there are small pops of colour and love the art above the bed ๐
I love the colours of the room! And that artwork is so cute. I am in the process of decorating my room, so it’s so helpful to have ideas!
wow, you could easily go into interior designing!!

I wish I could pick up everything in this room and put them into my own. I absolutely love the mix of pink and white with the ‘edgier’ objects like the skull bookends.
I’m in love!
This room is gorgeous. You’ve made me want to redecorate completely ๐
Very inspiring. Love the hanging plants

Hi Laura,
I knew that plants are not safe in the bedroom because at night they release carbon dioxide: do you put yours outside at that time or what’s the trick?
Anyway I love your wall gallery! Great!
Claudia
I think it is a bird of paradise, I love it too!
Laura ๐
I know! My mommy mode kicks in and I have to make sure a space works for them too!
Laura ๐
I just absolutely love your style – the colors you’ve picked to decorate your home somehow flow through everything! Beautiful!
I’ve never heard of that issue, but I looked it up and it appears that while they do give off some carbon dioxide during the night (as do all animals as well) they take in much more during photosynthesis in the day hours than they give off during the night. So I think it’s ok ๐
Laura
the bedroom looks awesome. i love the royal tenenbaum photos.
Who makes those shoes? Love them and NEED!!!
Okay…I am dying over here. That plant wall and the DIY globe planters are too much! I love it all. What a refreshing change!
Wow, this is fantastic. I love the reading area with the gallery wall and planters. Amazing job!
Wow, the change in the room is incredible! I love how you’ve done everything, its so bright any airy! it seems like a perfect bedroom, great job!!

Wow, so cool!!
Beautiful! I love that all the white is grounded with the larger black furniture pieces. And that sliding door is genius. I wish I had a space for one!
I’ve never seen skulls used so well! You might be changing my mind about them ๐ thanks so much for sharing every beautiful corner of this room with us!
ok how did you get the fan/light that color?! I’m not a fan of ceiling fan aesthetics either but the breeze is definitely nice. Did you paint it? I’ve looked everywhere and can only find chrome and white.
I love how the new bedroom has so many personal touches, like Laura’s skulls and DIY art works. Everything works so well together and it looks like such a cozy space where I would spend my entire day in, even if there was no TV – which is such a good idea, by the way!
Those hat hangers are adorable!

Great job! I love how bright it is. I keep going back and forth on having an airy bedroom or dark and moody. I haven’t touched our bedroom since moving into our house 4 yrs ago. It’s terrible and SO not a place I want to go to relax or sleep. Seriously need to do something about that, lol!
When you said “great philosophers” and then started with Calvin and Hobbes you almost had me for a minute because those are great philosophers!! ha!
Loving the skulls and the Royal Tenenbaums prints!
Would you share any other sources for the furniture/accessories that you can think of? Such a cool space that is something everyone could do!
This is beautiful. I love the pops of color everywhere, and the low maintenance plans. What an incredible change from the before and after!
Wow – what an amazing before and after photo. Would you mind sharing the color of gray and white you used on the bathroom sliding door?
Could you share the source of your blue and white wire plant stand? Thank you!
Absolutely AMAZING what you’ve done with this space! Definitely my dream room and will serve as my inspiration as soon as I move out of this dingy apartment and into a new place with my love. My favorite aspects would have to be those cute hat hangers! I have 8+ hats and that’s such a great way to store them!

The room is beautiful! Where do you purchase your awesome animal head skulls?
Did you redo the flooring? I’m curious about what carpeting you used. We’re looking at replacing our bedroom carpeting and are looking for good/modern options. The room looks wonderful overall!
I love this room! And amazing photos!
Wow, beautiful transformation! I love everything about this room. My fiancee and I are moving at the end of the month, and I’m definitely taking notes! I love the black and white with pops of baby pink, it feels really fresh! Pastel is a huge color trend (have you seen the Spring 15 runways?). Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful! I’m wondering what lighting you are using! I moved into a new place with less windows than I’m used to and actually need lights on during the day. I’m struggling to find the right kinds of bulbs that work night and day well.

Love all the plants especially! Do your cats eat your plants? Mine do, so I can only have plants out of their reach. Any tips for that?
This room really mixes masculine and feminine really well. I love it!

Beautiful! Wow an amazing transformation. After house sitting for 5 weeks and clearing out our house almost completely to do a spring clean I am super excited to redecorate everything. I’m loving all those plants!
Oh thanks! I use pretty much only lamps, I’m not into overhead lighting unless it’s on a dimmer. It’s the Tate bed from Crate and Barrel ๐
Laura
Plant placement really just depends on the cats. I used to have all mine on shelves until I brought a few down and watched them really closely around them. I did a few sprays with water if they got too close, but for the most part, they aren’t really interested in them so I think I’m lucky ๐ If yours eat them then you’ll want to stick with plants that are non-toxic at floor level

Hi Laura,
This is stunning. Thanks for sharing the transformation. Where did you purchase the wire side table with the “mother-in-law tongue” plant on it (next to the bookshelf)?

beautiful and fun makeover! i am wondering, now that you have done the globe hanging planters a few times, if you’ve found that some plants work better long term than others? i’d love your plant recommendations based on experience…

I think this might be the Before-and-after post you’ve shown of the house. I mean, I love the kitchen and the bathroom with the heart but I’m a sucker for bedroom decor haha! My favourite part is, of course, the bathroom door and everything about your wall decorations. You did an amazing job for sure ๐
By the way, I don’t know if you had explained it somewhere and I missed it but I thought the house was more like a working place for the ABM team. Are some of you living there aswell? (I don’t know how many you are haha!) Isn’t it uncomfortable because of the living-working space being the same?

I love snake plants, bird of paradise, and cactus the best because they are tough to kill. I have some fiddle fig that do well and some that don’t so I haven’t figured those out yet. The rest I just get when I see cute succulents and then I just replace them as they die ๐

It really just depends on how much light they have. The ones at the studio are still doing well, but I don’t think the ones in my room will last as long (not as bright). Buy plants that are either low or high light based on your spot (it should say on their tags). Hope you get to try it!

I’m sorry if this is late. I was only recently made aware of the Big Lebowski piece being featured here (a very pleasant surprise!). Using this promo link will remove the shipping cost when ordering until Sunday midnight PST – http://society6.com/wtfiamisaid?promo=ac0e1c.
Looks like the link was stripped – if you just click my name on this reply, it’ll do the same thing as the link with the free shipping.
I really love that ceiling light/fan! Where did you find it in that color combo?
Totally just bought The Royal Tenenbaums prints for my boyfriend for Christmas, they are amazing!!!
Where did you get your white book case? (below the cow skull)
Love how bright and cheerful this room looks! I’m not sure where I want to go with our bedroom in my new place… I know I need lots of plants like this though! I love the idea of making those hanging planters for my bedroom and dining room, but have not yet been able to find any of the plastic fishbowls here in Australia, which is a bummer!
How do you have so many plants with cats around? I’m always wanting more plants but I don’t get them in fear that my kitten will eat them and die!!
Loving that dresser! Where’d you find it?
I love your style!!! You look great! http://www.myworldfashion.com
Beautiful makeover!! So many things to admire – and your shoes are one of them!!! I can’t stop looking at them – details?? Thanks ๐
Laura
Wow, what a BEAUTIFUL room! You did such an amazing job. I love the fuzzy stool that the kitty is perching on by the window – was that a DIY or is it just a cozy blanket on a stool? Also, I was completely distracted during this post by how cute you are! Would you mind saying who makes those sandals/pants/that top?
Margaret, I am in the same dilemma between light/airy and dark/cozy! I love bright, beautiful rooms like this one but when it comes to sleeping I MUST have complete darkness so I think a dark colors would really help. Sleep is so important – you need to redo your room so you have a nice place to relax and snooze at night!
This looks so great! I have a question about your hanging plants? I have done a tablescape of cactus/succulents before & had no luck as there was no drainage. Were you able to keep these alive? If so, can you share any tips? Thanks!
I love everything AND the SHOES! What kind of shoes are those? The sandals with the buckles…..
