Have you ever wanted to print a color photograph really big but changed your mind once you found out how much it would cost to have something printed that size? I know I have. Thankfully, there is a sneaky way to get around that problem, and we're teaming up with Canon USA to show how you can actually create the effect of the extra large photos from home instead. Since we've been shuffling office spaces around the studio lately, we needed some fun art that both the girls and the guys would equally enjoy. And what's one thing that all of us can agree on? Donuts! Of course you don't have to use donuts for your print, but here's how you can make your own giant tiled wall art:
Supplies:
–Canon PIXMA iP8720 printer
–13" x 19" photo paper (we used matte, but you could use semi-gloss as well)
-photo editing software (I used Photoshop, but Photoshop Elements should work just fine as well)
-X-Acto knife and metal ruler
-cutting mat
-4 frames
First you'll want to take your photo and open it in Photoshop. Crop your picture as needed, and check your photo resolution. If your image resolution isn't 300 dpi, you'll want to change your image resolution by slow increments of 10% at a time. So if you start at 72 dpi, you'll want to change it to 79, then 87, then 95, then 104, etc., until you reach 300 dpi. Once you have the correct photo resolution, you can resize the dimensions of the photo to its final size (my four frames were 11" x 14" so my overall photo size was 22" x 28"). Once sized, use guidelines to mark off four equal sections of your photo (these sections should be the size of your four frames) and open four new documents that are the size of those sections (so 11" x 14" for me). Use the marquee tool and select the first tiled section of your photograph. Copy the section and paste it to one of the new blank documents you created at the same size.
Repeat the process with the other three tiled sections, and print each section onto photo paper. With these being such large prints, we used our Canon PIXMA iP8720, which allows you to print photos up to 13" x 19". This thing is amazing!
Once printed, use your X-Acto knife, ruler, and mat to trim the photos down to size, and place each photo in a frame.
Cut four paper rectangles the same size as your frames out of craft paper, and use them to find the best placing for your wall art. Measure the locations of your nail hangers on the back of your frames, and install nails in the corresponding locations on your paper mock-ups. Remove the paper, hang your frames in the correct order, and you're done!
We are all really happy with how our donut art came out, and it totally feels like the photo is a window into a magical world of giant donuts. It also didn't hurt that we had to go and buy a bunch of donuts in order to take the picture. Man, the difficult things that we have to do for our jobs, right? What photo would you like to turn into your own tiled photo art? xo. Laura

Thanks

This is super! My house has many HUGE blank wall that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with… this will surely come in handy!
Why do you change the resolution a little at a time? Why not just change it to 300 right away? Thanks!
Okay this is just awesome and I want to eat every single one of those donuts.

This is a great idea! I will definitely pin it!

Thank you for the step by step. Always wondered how to do this.
I love how you guys always fit donuts into projects from time to time ๐
Love love love!! I have been looking at this particular wall in my home wondering what I want to do with it (I’m bored with the what’s on the wall now) and you have laid it all out for me!
Yes, we all agree on donuts! And this is such a great DIY, even the really big frames are so expensive, getting smaller ones is cheaper AND easier to find! Thanks for this helpful post ๐

Doughnut art. Who knew how beautiful it could be?
Cuuuuuute! I love donuts, of course, but this would look good with so many different kinds of prints! Thanks for the inspiration!

We are in desperate need of a printer, but were thinking of getting a laser so that we don’t have to deal with ink cartridges. Unfortunately, I’ve read that laser printers don’t print photos as well. I see this Canon printer is an inkjet – and clearly it prints beautiful images. How often do you go through cartridges? Also – if you don’t print something for a couple of months – do the cartridges dry out? Thanks!
Cool! I love this idea. Also, your way to hang photos and getting the nail placement correct is genius! I’m always messing that up and having to re-hammer holes and get out the spackling and ugh. Your way is much better.
I think I’d do a really cool landscape photo of my husband and dog on top of the sand dunes in Colorado.
This is so cool, i always want to do a statement picture wall art, this will come handy when i do. these donut pics, mmm, i want one now!
xo
Super cute idea! I love all of you girl’s diy home decor/crafts. Pinning this one for later.
Those donuts look so yummy! I couldn’t keep that on my wall or I’d crave donuts all the time;) Cute idea tho!
SUPER fun project and beautiful photos, sarah. BEAUTIFUL lighting of laura hanging the pics up ๐ <3 <3
Great idea and such a clear and simple tutorial! A nice example of what sponsored content SHOULD be!
PS, stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before, but: I often view ABM on my iPhone and the titles of posts are frequently ‘cut off’ so the last 2 words are missing. Just FYI.
Oh my guac. This is so fantastic. It’s fun, colorful, & I just love it!! Must try with photos of pizza.

Hi Laura,
I love this project! Had a question about the frames: I see a lot of DIY projects that use frames, but frames are expensive! Where do you get your frames?
Thanks!
Sivan
Love it! It’s an awesome idea!
What a great idea! And the donuts are from Hurts Donuts aren’t they? I picked up a dozen of them this weekend when we were passing through Springfield on our way to Tablerock Lake. They have so many amazing flavors! I took a photo of our donuts and I even edited it with the ABM app! http://instagram.com/p/rM7e70SSaU/?modal=true
what a brilliant idea! This is why I love your blog so much, can’t wait to do this in my new house!

Great idea!
You guys have a huge studio, why, oh why do you guys always work on the floor???!
This is such a sweet idea for a landscape – but adore the use of food for a kitchen, too. Thanks for the inspiration! Pinning!

awesome idea! looks really great ๐

Please tell me where I can get my hands on that blue leather jacket!
Mattie, I wanted to ask the same question. ๐
And do you literally go ‘image, image size, 82dpi, OK, repeat…until you reach 300?
Thanks!
Was wondering the same thing. And what if your original image size is smaller than the size of the frame? Won’t that compromise the quality of the photo?
This looks amazing! I’m an amateur photographer and love your idea of printing my photos at home. I’m not in the position to spend more than $100-$120 on a photo printer so I wondered if you had any recommendations for that price range. The speed and bulkiness doesn’t really matter to me, I just want high quality photos. Thanks!
What a lovely idea ๐ would love it if you could check out my Summer Look Book xo

what a great idea! I definitely have been holding back on printing some great photos on large print due to this very fact, it’s so darn expensive! thanks for the great tip! this is such a great idea for a photo that’s almost pattern-like rather than faces. it makes me think of those iconic sepia orchids on 3 canvases that ikea used to (still does?) sell.
Thanks for sharing this and for the picture hanging tips! I have a stack of pictures in frames that need to go up on the wall, so definitely planning on using the paper rectangle idea.
i love this post! This is going to my weekend project!
If you go straight to 300 from 72 you’ll lose quality and detail, but if you jump a little bit at a time, you’ll maintain the level of crispness that the original photo has. Since you’re recreating pixels every time you change the DPI, it’s better to do it a little bit at a time.

Hi Cara!
It would affect the quality. That’s why we purposefully took a photo that was for this idea so we could make sure it was a high enough resolution to print it as big as we needed. BUT, it really depends on how much the quality changes if it’s not big enough, since it may not be enough to ruin the photo. I have lots of the large-scale blueprint prints in my house, and you get a lesser quality print on those because of the size, but it’s just part of the look in my mind so it doesn’t bother me ๐
Laura
Yes Joy! You got it!
Laura ๐
Hi Amy!
It’s really hard for us to guess how long it would take someone to go through a cartridge (not a good answer, I know!). It would really vary based on how much you print and what you print (we are always printing something around here). I have heard with inkjet printers in general that you should try and print at least one simple thing a week and that it will extend the life of your ink vs. not printing anything for months, so you could at least do that!
Laura ๐
We usually either go to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, but they have a lot of frame sales and coupons, so we try and use those when possible, it makes a big difference! You could also try Mandi’s tips for making your own frame:

You are right, they are! So good…

Ha ha! I even have a work table now, but old habits die hard. I just naturally always work on the floor for some reason (although my back is not usually happy about it)…

This looks delicious AND awesome! I wouldn’t mind buying a bunch of donuts either. I think this concept would be really cool with a nature scene too.

I love that jacket! It’s from Nasty Gal (no longer in stock it looks like)…

Well, you are in luck! You can always use the Selphy from Canon to print at home! That one is around $100 ๐

Hi Laura,
I didn’t mean to put you on the spot – I’m sure you guys go through more ink than the average user. Thanks for the tip about printing something once a week – I had never heard that before!
Thanks for getting back to me ๐
I was wondering if do you also made the frames? or where do you get them ? I want to try to recreate the same DIY on my house but with picture of fruits on it.
how cuteee!! gosh I would want a donut everyday of my life if I had to keep looking at that ๐
Oh wow this is great.. I dont eat donuts but I love to look at them. esp when there’s lots and lots of pretty looking sugar sprinkles on it! ๐
I need this in my life! It’s so polished and beautiful at the same time!
Super cute! Am definitely trying that out ๐

What a fun art display! So many delicious looking donuts! I did have a question, it may be a little silly, but as someone who is just learning my way around Photoshop I am curious why you increase the DPI in increments of 10% instead of just going ahead to 300 DPI? Thank you!
Its really nice seems like the real wall mate but still very simple and creative.
We are loving this! Having moved house almost 5 months ago we’re in need of crafty (a frugal) wall decor ideas.
Thanks for sharing.
Meohmycrafts!
We get them usually at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, but wait for a sale or use a coupon so it’s less expensive ๐

What a pretty piece of artwork that is <3
Aside from the post itself, can you tell me what this little golden-legged table is and where I might get one?
Tip: to skip the Photoshop part check out blockposters.com, upload a photo and print it already in letter or A4 format.
This is so cool!! Have to try it
Great idea!
