Wall hangings are a great way to add some color and texture to your wall in a different way from a photo or print. While there are some crazy beautiful weaving-based wall hangings, I totally get that not everyone is as into weavings as others. I wanted to make a wall hanging that had a bit more of an edge to it and it turns out that chain fringe is the perfect solution! I had some round wooden circles in my craft pile, so I made an graphic eye as the main design based off my favorite pillow at the moment. Let’s get started!Supplies:
– 8″ wooden circle
– large jump rings
– 2 gold chain spools
– jewelry tool kit
– acrylic paint
– 3 1/2″ brass cup hooks
– 1″ brass stamping blank
– balsa wood boards and strips
– drill and small drill bits
– glue
– X-Acto knife and cutting mat
Use your acrylic paint to paint your wooden circle the color of your choosing. Take your drill and drill two small holes a few inches below the widest part of your circle and screw in two cup hooks into the holes. Cut some smaller balsa wood sticks with your X-Acto knife into 10 pieces that are 2″ long. Draw a 4″ wide oval onto one of the balsa boards and cut that out as well (you can use a small bowl or dish to trace your oval as I did above).Paint your oval white and your sticks black. Use your glue to attach your eye and lashes in place and then add your brass pupil in the middle. If you don’t want to freehand gluing the pieces, you can use painters or washi tape to mark where things should go and then remove the tape once your pieces are placed. Cut with your chain cutters a piece of chain that will go from one cup hook to the next with a little bit of slack. Use your pliers and jump rings to attach long lengths of chain to the top chain and fill in as many chains as you want, depending on how much space you want between them. I did 17 chains that make a “V” pattern at the bottom but you can trim them to be the same length at the bottom as well.Drill one more hole at the top of your circle and add another cup hook, a 2″ long chain piece, and a jump ring at the top for hanging. Now, you just need to decide where you want to hang this guy! The delicate chain really does look like fringe from further away, so it’s a fun surprise to see what it really is as you get closer. This is a great option if you love the idea of a wall hanging but want something a little more graphic with an edge. You can also do this project on a much bigger or smaller scale just by changing the size of the supplies you use or you could make a few in different colors for a wall grouping of them. The more the merrier! xo. Laura

I’m loving all the balsa wood tuts lately! While this isn’t a project I’d gravitate towards (just not my style), I love learning different ways to craft with balsa.
Love this so much! Gold accents always look gorgeous!
