Confession: I am addicted to Candy Crush. It's been a thing for about the last 6-8 months. Any spare moment I have, riding in the car (read: NOT driving), waiting in line at the post office, etc. I'm playing Candy Crush. No, I'm not texting a friend or checking my email like a normal person with friends. I'm lining up colorful candies in order to, well, crush them! I might as well tell you, I'm currently on level 105. Not to, like, brag or anything. I like to think of it as only a slightly sad obsession. It's safe to say, I'm a fan girl for Candy Crush. So, in honor of this too addictive game I decided to make donut holes. I'm also donut obsessed. This recipe can easily be made into traditional size/shaped donuts. It's a fantastic base recipe and (bonus) it sort of tastes like Krispy Kreme donuts. But you can be the judge of that. Candy Crush Donut Holes, makes about a million tiny donut holes, or about two dozen standard size donuts. Recipe slightly adapted from A Baker's Field Guide to Doughnuts.
1/4 cup warm water
4 1/2 teaspoons (two packages) active dry yeast
6 tablespoons shortening (you can substitute butter if you prefer)
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5-5 1/2 cups flour
oil for frying
In a small bowl pour the yeast over the warm water and allow that to sit for 5 minutes.
On the stove top or in the microwave heat together the shortening, milk and cream until just melted.
In a large bowl, or in the bowl or your mixer, combine the yeast water, shortening milk, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, vanilla extract and 2 1/2 cups flour. Stir until just combined. Add in another 2 1/2 cups flour. Stir to combine. If the dough still seems too sticky at this stage (still really clingy to the sides of the bowl as you mix) add in an additional 1/2 cup flour. I needed all 5 1/2 cups so probably you will too. Use your dough hook attachment or clean hands to knead the dough for a few minutes.
Place the dough ball in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and allow to rise for one hour (or until doubled in size).I used mini cookie cutters to create my donut hole shapes. As you can see I still had to get a little creative as these aren't the exact Candy Crush shapes. And remember, you can totally just cut these into standard size donuts if you want. Here are my shapes. I ended up needing a small circle shape as my cookie cutter set didn't include one. I used the end of a large pastry tip, as it created a circle a similar size to my other shapes.
Punch the dough down and divide in two. On a floured worked surface roll out half of the dough, so it's about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out your shapes. Place donut holes on a lightly floured baking sheet. Once you've cut out all your shapes, cover the baking sheet(s) with a clean towel and allow to rise for another 30 minutes.Fry in oil that is around 350Β°F. Fry for about ten seconds on each side. Remember, these are tiny donut holes so they don't need much cooking time. If you are making standard size donuts fry for about 45 seconds to one minute on each side. I like to use metal tongs to help flip the donuts as well as remove them from the hot oil to a plate lined with paper towels once cooked.White Chocolate Glaze, makes about one cup.
1.5 oz. white chocolate
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 tablespoon water
1 cup powdered sugar
In a small bowl melt together the chocolate, heavy cream and water. I did this in the microwave. Microwave on high for 20 seconds. Stir. Microwave on high for an additional 18-20 seconds. Stir until well combined. If you're adding food coloring do so after this step. Then whisk in the powdered sugar. I repeated this process five times to get all my colors. You could also substitute the white chocolate for semisweet for a delicious chocolate glaze. πDip warm donuts in the glaze. Devour. Play Candy Crush. Live your life. xo. Emma

I’m on level 418…feels like I don’t have a life
What a great idea! I’m totally whipping up a batch the next time I have a group of fellow candy crushers over. We can enjoy them while discussing the important things like colour bombs and lollipop hammers. They look awesome
π
Holy Moly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear. Please no suggestions. I’m already reaching for my phone to look up Lost Island.

I’m also addicted to candy crush! It’s been kinda fun though since my great aunt plays as well, so we have been competing against each other. She beats my scores like crazy though.
i love these! i want to make them for valentines day but i would also include the jelly fish!!!!
(im only on 38…105 is very impressive to me)
haha..Oh my gosh, I’m glad I’m not the only one…I feel so lame sometimes when I’m playing at the bank. I try to hide my phone from the people behind me. Its terrible…..
Pretty brilliant! Who knew you could make donut holes in such cute shapes?!
hehe, I just hit level 400 π
keep going ~
So cute! What a great idea! Love this, ladies!

These look delicious!
I may or may not have finished all the developed levels (485….. yikes) and now have no clue what to do with myself. Do I go back and try and get higher scores? Do I take this opportunity to stop playing and find something productive to do with my time? haha I blame long bus rides to work.
Also now I am craving a donut.
A candy crush treat?! Now that’s awesome. I love the mini cookie cutters – they’re so cute for one bite treats.
My co-workers and I are also slightly obsessed with candy crush! I need to make these for the office, they’ll love it!!
Such a cute idea! I’ve yet to play Candy Crush, but gosh, the craze is wild!
Have you ever experimented with using coconut oil instead of shortening? I have been wanting to use it to make an almond meal crust, but if you have any thoughts on how you have used it that would be helpful.
Ha! I am currently trying to beat the very level in the pic!!! The donuts are so cute! And I’m sure they are as delicious as they look, too π
I alternate between Candy Crush and Bubble Mania! *Blushes*
This looks dangerously yummy!! π xx

Your post has really made me feel much better! π I am on level 104, my tablet’s date is set on april (when I play, I play, no waiting… how sad is that?) and I had to uninstall it from my phone in order to have my battery last more than half a day π
Hang in there! π
P.S.- Those donut holes look a-ma-zing! :*
This is great, such a good idea. I should make them. I have only one problem with Candy Crush which is I’ve reached the last level and now I have to wait for the new ones..
Sounds yummy”, such a cool idea

My boyfriend is on level 445…its a wonder we have a relationship! Maybe I could set up an edible version where if you match you can eat?? I’d like that game much better than the computer one!

Really great idea!
I’m also hooked – maybe playing Candy Crush is not a good idea when I should be studying for my exams, but gosh, it’s ‘divine’! π

You know I read somewhere that the makers of Candy Crush make around $600,000 every hour or something crazy like that. I’m on level 350 and cannot put it down when I have spare time!!! A see a Candy Crush themed party in the future with donut holes, wrapped candy, lollipops and of course the chocolate sprinkle candies!!!! Such a creative idea, I love it!!
these are adorable and hilarious. i am on level 245. i can’t stop/won’t stop. haha.
What funny!!! Nice idea for fans of Candy Crush.

LOVE this. I’m on level 410, which is flat out embarrassing. I. Can’t. Stop. Playing.
So it ends at level 485? Interesting. I doubt I’ll ever make it. But you never know. I wondered if it ever ended. π
-Emma
Yes. I originally started playing simply because it was always the top grossing app. So I was curious about it.
I’m sure the makes are quite rich. Like Scrooge McDuck rich. π
-Emma
I wasn’t going to comment, but embarrassingly I think I have everyone here beat. Level 438… I even dressed as a candy crush queen for Halloween last year! Got one of those clear plastic hanging closet organizers, filled it with cut out candies, and wore it like an apron over a hot pink dress and rainbow socks with my hair in pigtails. Yeah…. I’m that cool. Ha! Love that we share an obsession, Emma!
xo

I’ve never played Candy Crush before, but you bet every night while we’re laying in bed, my boyfriend is next to me playing that or Farm Heroes, which is basically the same thing (but cuter cause their little vegetables with faces). These would be great to make for him! Plus: Krispy Kreme-esque?! I’m sold.

Haha so cool π I’m obsessed with candy crush! π
http://ladykfashionparty.blogspot.com/
So far, reading the comments has been just as great as reading your post! ha! I’ve never actually played candy crush, only because every time someone mentions it (with family, or at the salon etc), it’s immediately followed with “DON’T START, DON’T START, YOU CAN’T QUIT ONCE YOU START!” haha, so I’ve just stayed away, but it looks like fun. The donuts though? Adorable. mmmmmmm
This makes me very happy. Thanks Emma!
Haha this is so awesome π
This is what I call thinking out of the box. HA! I suck at Candy Crush which doesnt mean I’m less addicted…
Inspiration in action!!!
yum yum, this is freaky cool
My college friend is about 450 level π
Mhm Delicious! I love so much the “naughty” voice, haha. Sweet!
This is an amazing recipe. I’m going to have to save this and try it some time. They look both amazing and delicious!
Bet the donuts were… “Divine”..
this game is addicting! ha! but i hate that i have to wait for 30 minutes for 1 life, i am on level 123, and this donut is a brilliant idea!!!
Haha I’m also pretty addicted! But I have this thing where I need to get three stars on every level! Right now I’m up to level 49 with three stars π Also, lovely idea with the donut holes. I must try these myself.
http://olivia-savannah.blogspot.nl/
These are so funny! I love them! π
I kind of love it when you let your nerd-pride show through, Emma. It’s one of my favorite things. These look delicious. π
Haha! I love the way you write about your “slight” obsessions. Legit hilarity. And also, this is brilliant.
It seems like Candy Crush is the modern day Snood π I’m GLAD I haven’t tried playing this game before because everyone who does seems to become obsessed. Your donut-hole ode to the game is adorable – what a fun project!
I know how you feel… I m on level 492… Always there are a update with new levels!!!I can’t stop to play!
