When I was younger an Amaretto Sour was the first cocktail I learned to make at home. It’s one of those, “OH- this doesn’t taste like alchohol AT ALL…. perfect!” drinks. It was love at first sip.
Years later, I no longer drink Amaretto Sours, but I thought it might be fun to re-live the good ole’ days with a fresher homemade version of my very first favorite mixed drink. If you like sweet drinks, you have to try this! (Spoiler- it’s still one of my favorite sweet drinks!)As with most things, homemade is TOTALLY tastier in this case! It’s super easy too. With just three ingredients you can make your own sour mix at home. I find it to be fresher tasting and less syrupy than the storebought versions- plus that fake neon yellow color is absent… that’s probably for the best, right?Homemade Sour Mix, Make one large bottle
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 cups fresh lemon and lime juice (strain out the pulp)
First, combine the water and sugar in a small pot and simmer until the sugar completely dissolves. Turn down the heat and add the lemon and lime juice. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool before straining it a final time into an airtight glass container.
Keeps for a minimum of two weeks in the refrigerator. You do not have to refrigerate more syrups, but I like to when there is a high content of fresh ingredients, so it lasts a little bit longer. After your mixture is completely cool, you can funnel it into another container and add a pour spout to the top.As always- bonus points for a cute homemade label! Amaretto Sour (for nostalgia’s sake! it’s the easiest recipe ever.)
1 part Amaretto Almond Liqueur
1 part homemade sour mix
Pour both ingredients into a glass filled with ice. Mix with a spoon. Garnish with a cherry and an orange or lemon slice. Too sweet? Substitute half the Amaretto for Whiskey. 😉Cheers! xo. Elsie

This is super handy… Thanks I will be making this to keep on my soon-to-be bar car, inspired by your great posts on that series here. 🙂 Thanks for sharing the recipe. It seems deceptively simple – I’m sure I can handle it. Haha.
Cheers!

Love whiskey sours! Just to clarify – is it 2 cups each lemon and lime juice? or 1 cup of each?
Can’t wait to try it at home!
Oh you are the master of the drinks cart, so easy and great idea.

I will definitely try this in summer!
I think you forgot the sugar in your text. After your ingredients list, you combine water with…? 😀
Just a quick edit..in the instructions, it says “First, combine the water in a small pot and simmer until they have combine completely.” I think you meant to say “Combine the water and sugar in a small pot…”
Also, thanks for sharing a recipe for an otherwise-purchased product. I’ll definitely add this to my recipe collection!
” First, combine the water in a small pot and simmer “… You forgot the “sugar” word 🙂
Brilliant! I will absolutely be making this in the near future. Amaretto sours is deeelicious!

Ps. I think there may be a typo on the 2nd line ‘mix water (and sugar?) together’
Yummm!!! Thank you for sharing this! I’m really excited about all these cocktail recipes your bustin’ out lately!

Does it keep for a minimum of two weeks in the fridge? Or is it maximum? Just don’t want to poison myself- I have a weird thing with expired foods! Also I love that bottle- where did you all get it. so cute! 🙂
Love this! Can’t wait to make my own.
Love amareto sours! I have recently been adding soda water to mine to make a sort of sour spritzer and it’s so refreshing and yummy! Super excited about the sour recipe! Totally trying it!
Hi Eleanor,
1 cup lemon, 1 cup lime!
xo! Elsie
Thanks!!
Sugar! Sorry! 😀
Minimum!

ps- with this (and any) syrup you can tell when it’s bad because it will have a bad smell and usually mold collecting at the top of the liquid. I was being REALLY conservative with the two weeks though, it will likely last much longer.
Amaretto Sours are my favorite! I can’t wait to make this! woohoo!!!
Awesome!!! This has long been on my figure-out-how-to-do list and I’ve just never gotten around to it. Amaretto Sours are still my favorite drink. 🙂
at first I was like…what is “sour mix?” thinking it was like lemon scented cleaner or something….The Artistically Challenged: Beauty, Fashion, Music, Lifestyle Blog
I have to try this it looks delish!
Aaaah! My favorite drink! The chemical preservatives and other gunk in the store-bought mixes give me a headache. So I’m so excited to try this!!! Thank you : )
Haha! That’s awesome. 😀
elsie
I totally agree!

Oh I love Whiskey Sours. They are my 2013 discovery. I always have been a beer girl and now I love them. My parents have started making them at home. This would make it so much easier. I guess that is a good and bad thing =]

Great recipe! And it makes me laugh! A few years ago, while working as a server, I took a last minute shift as a bar back when someone had a family emergency. I had to make sour mix for the night, but I couldn’t find the recipe. I asked the two veteran bartenders on duty and they repeatedly told me “just make it taste good.” Frustrated, wanting to do a good job, and anxious to get the sour mix made before the dinner rush, I ended up in a teary-eyed melt down while making it. In the end though, we sold tons of our twist on a whiskey sour, which of course was full of my sour mix! At the end of the night we were all able to laugh at my melt down, joking that my tears were the secret ingredient! (Actually it was oj ’cause I just threw every citrus we had in there!)
Amaretto Sour was the first drink I learned to make too! I bet it would taste really good with homemade sour mix.

Amaretto sours are still an old fav, with a glazed cherry on top 🙂

Thank you so much for the recipe.
I have just learned to make lemonade a few month ago and now this.
Well.. it’s on my to do list now, to make my own sour mix.
Thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to try making it. I’ve only made my own simple syrup (which is very, very simple to do). Here’s how to make simple syrup and a French 75 cocktail:

I learned the freshest, tastiest method for Amaretto Sours when I was living in New Zealand, and it’s still my go to recipe.
2-3 parts freshly squeezed lemon juice (depending on how sour you can go)
1 part amaretto
shaken hard over ice, then strained into a chilled martini glass.
No added sugar, since the amaretto is sweet enough, and you still get that absolute sour pucker. I’ve never liked the ones made with sour mix (especially not the artificial stuff) and I nearly gagged once when someone made it for me with egg whites.
I reintroduced these to our house drinks menu over Christmas, a little off season, but hey!
I’ve never been a huge fan of alcoholic drinks because I hate the taste of alcohol. Moscato is my go to (I know a lot of you are probably cringing because it’s wayyyy too sweet for pretty much 99% of people), but I just struggle with the alcohol flavor. This sounds delicious though!! I can’t wait to try it out! Maybe at a restaurant though before I buy a whole bottle of amaretto! haha. Does anyone have any other suggestions for the newbies who have a hard time with the taste of liquer?
xoxo

I’m definitely going to have to try making this! A midori sour is one of my favorite drinks!
Looks so easy! Do you think this is something that could be used for margaritas?
Think I know what I am going to be drinking this weekend. Forget marking! Can’t wait to give this a try 🙂
Love it! Amaretto Sours are still my go-to drink, but I also find store bought sour mixes to be… well, lacking. Great DIY- thanks, Elsie!
If you don’t like drinks that are too sweet, replace the Amaretto completely with rum and you’ll have a Trinidadian rum punch! We served that as the cocktail at our wedding (I am half Trini) and it went down an absolute treat!
I just made this recipe and was a blast (mixed with Pisco). So easy to make and so tasty.
OMG, Love it!! 🙂
Yum! Can’t wait to try this out!
Hello! I’m looking for inspiration 🙂 I’m trying to come up with a cocktail for a joint Chinese New Year and Burns Night party……any ideas? 🙂
This is wonderful! I do enjoy an Amaretto Sour every rare moment here and there, and love that I now can make my own Sour mix!
Amaretto Sour’s were one of the first drink’s I learned to make, too!
I love this idea. Store bought sour mix tastes so artificial. And if I make my own amaretto, it’ll be all kinds of hand crafted. Brilliant!
Seems like such an easy thing to make! Will keep this in mind

………..
Where did y’all get the bottle for this? I’m looking for a good one to store my sour mix.
hi
thanks for the recipe
where can i get this bottle?
thanks
does anyone know the shelf life of this mix? How long it can be stored in the fridge?
Hi Julie,
I would keep it in the fridge up to a month or so (basically the same as store bought sour mix once it was opened).
-Elsie
I made this recipe for my husband who loves whiskey sours, so so much better then the store bought, he loves it!!!! Thank you
….sounds great and going to try this recipe!
Just want to let you know that in your instructions for the lemon sour mix under point 1. I guess it’s supposed to say: “cool” instead of “cook” (Remove from heat and let the mixture “cool” before straining…) Was confused first but guess that’s the solution… 🙂
Thanks for your beautiful website!
I made my own – will never use store bought stuff again – nice.
Loved your Amaretto Sour story.
Looking forward to sipping a real whiskey sour.
