Bubble gum ice cream is a total kid guilty pleasure food. Wait, do kids have guilty pleasures? I don't know. But, putting bubble gum in your ice cream had to be invented by a kid. It's sort of bananas, considering you're really not supposed to eat (swallow) gum. Elsie asked me if I would make bubble gum ice cream for our neice's birthday party this weekend. Let's just say there's a lot of pink involved. π I was excited to give it a try! My main goal was to make sure the ice cream itself tasted like bubble gum, with or without consuming the extra bubble gum pieces scattered throughout the batter. Here's what I cam up with. Bubble Gum Ice Cream, makes about 5 pints.
3 cups whole milk
6 oz. bubble gum
2 cups sugar
10 egg yolks
3 cups heavy whipping cream
pink (or red) food dye (optional)
First we make bubble gum flavored milk (!!!!!!). In a bowl combine the whole milk with four ounces bubble gum. Allow that to soak for 6-8 hours (or overnight). This will make the milk a soft pink color. Remove the gum, reserve the milk.In a large pot combine the bubble gum milk with the sugar. Stir together over medium heat so the sugar dissolves. In a smaller bowl whisk together the egg yolks. Pour one cup of the warm milk mixture into the eggs, stirring as you do. This will temper the yolks. Now pour the yolks into the milk pot. Continue to stir and cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens (6-8 minutes). Your mixture should be like a very thin custard, not grainy with specks of cooked eggs. If you find you do have a few specks simply strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve before proceeding.
In a large bowl combine the milk/yolk mixture and the heavy whipping cream. The yellow yolks may have changed the color of your batter. So, if you choose you can add some food dye here to get it back to that soft pink hue. Allow the mixture to cool in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours (or overnight). Pour the batter into your ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer's directions to make ice cream! During the last few minutes of mixing add in the remaining two ounces of gum (cut into small bite size pieces). If you are serving this to super young children and you're concerned about the bubble gum content feel free to leave those last two ounces out of the batter. The ice cream will still taste like bubble gum, since we started the whole thing off with bubble gum flavored milk. π Enjoy! xo. Emma

This reminds me of Superman ice cream as a kid – sounds amazing!
Hmm, I’ve never had bubblegum ice cream before! My best friend just got an ice cream maker so we’ve been making various flavors to test them out. Your pecan pie ice cream is still #1 on my ice cream to do list!! π

I’d never tought that making bubble gum ice cream at home is possible! and, actually, that’s why I have a little idea and chalenge maybe for you, Emma – what about butterbeer? You know, this one from Harry Potter? One time I saw somewhere a recepie but unfourtunately I can’t remeber where. So – you think that you’ll manage to come up with something like that? Because it would be just AWESOME! π
And, well, I just wanted to add that your work here is simply amazing and I love checking this blog even a couple times a day. You both have no idea how inspiring you are and how grateful I am sometimes that you have here so many beautiful things. I’ve started following this blog some time ago (what, year and a half? two years?) and it really is nice to see that people can do wonderful things if they just want to. So – thank you, Elsie and Emma. For making this world a little bit better and giving thousands of great ideas. It’s even strange somehow that I want so badly to throw a party just because I saw some of your pictures! π
Good luck and greetings from Poland! π
This is totally amazing, guys!
Awesome!
You’re making me miss Hubba Bubba.. π
I love how you actually used gum to sweeten the milk! I think if you started with a sweet cereal milk (for example, Lucky Charms) and added the gum in that, that would make a phenomenal, sweet ice cream treat! π

I don’t know how strong of a flavor you would get from soaking the bubblegum in the ice cream mixture, but you could use bubblegum extract instead (they sell it at the craft stores in the candy making aisle) and then add the bubblegum in the late stages of freezing as you did.
Bubblegum milkshakes are pretty weird and awesome as well and we even made bubblegum flavored icing for cupcakes with it.
Um, YUMMMMM! Looks delishhh! Must try this π
I read this blog daily, and I know you have had comments like this one before- it is so disheartening to see so many grammatical errors. This post has particularly atrocious grammar: “kids” is plural, not “kid’s”- that is possessive; “your” is not short for “you are”; and it should be “supposed,” not “suppose”- those words have totally different meanings. The only reason these grammar mistakes make any difference at all is that they detract and distract from the quality of your content. I really hope you will take more care with your writing in future posts.
this sounds delicious! want to go home and try it now!

What a fun idea! I’ve also seen bubble gum flavoring in the baking goods aisle of my grocery store. That might be a more covert alternative, as it wouldn’t color the ice cream and you could surprise people with the flavor.
FYI, the last “your” in the entry should actually be “you’re” (If you’re concerned about the bubble…). Sorry but I’m a huge stickler for grammar!
You got me when you wrote bubble gum and completed the sentence with icecream.

Yum yum yum! Definitely going to try this!

I used to like bubble gum ice cream but then my teeth started going south. I suspect most people don’t so much grow out of it as they no long can eat it without doing some serious dental damage. Talk about an expensive treat, lol!
Bubble gum ice cream was my absolute favorite as a kid!
