Is it possible to even say the word "horchata" without getting that Vampire Weekend song stuck in your head? Not possible, I say! I'm not complaining though. It's a cute song. (link if player doesn't load) Easy Horchata, Serves two tall glasses or four small glasses
Adapted from Allrecipes (we love their recipe, but cut the sugar in half, because we found it too sweet)
1 cup uncooked white rice
5 cups water
1/2 cup milk
1/2 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup white sugar
Pour the rice and water into a blender and blend for one minute. Let rice and water sit in the blender for 3 hours.Using cheesecloth over a fine mesh strainer, strain the rice water into a pitcher then throw the rice away. Add milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Mix well and chill before serving.
If you're making the spiked version I would personally enjoy it without sugar, since the Rumchata is already so sweet. I'm a fan of semi-sweet cocktails, and you can always add more sugar later if you choose to!To make a delicious spiked version, add 3 ounces RumChata to your iced horchata. Enjoy!

Horchata is one of my all-time favorite things, great post! I’m excited to try making it myself, and blown away that I never thought of adding alcohol. Thanks!
I would like to sign up for recipe testing.
We usually just drink the RumChata over ice (no mixers). It is already really sweet and isn’t a very strong alcohol. It is also really good in root beer if you are looking for a spiked root beer float recipe.
i want to try this! we always have rumchata in the fridge (just to drink straight :P) but i LOVE LOVE LOVE a good non-alcoholic horchata too.
also, for an even MORE kick than straight rumchata, mix rumchata and fireball whiskey and you’ve got a STRONG drink, but it seriously doesn’t taste like alcohol at all, only tastes like Christmas 😉
Excited to try this! Wondering at which step the milk is added?
SPIKED PLEASE!!!

Oooo, thanks- I love a good horchata. I can’t believe it never occurred to me to spike it before. Yum!
Ah, I see you added the milk step now. Thank you!
Couldn’t you just keep the recipe as is and add regular white rum?
Mmmmm! If Laura needs a break from taste testing, I’m your girl!
Oh my goodness! I would soo love to try the spiked version if I wasn’t nursing. But I will definitely keep this recipe in mind. :]
Mmmmm yes please! Thanks for sharing!

Don’t throw away the rice! Make some “Arroz Con Leche!” 🙂
Um this looks amazing! I’m getting my tonsils out soon and since it is getting close to holidays I’m kind of excited to live off of eggnog and horchata for a while.
Haha, Rumchata is soooo weird. It tastes just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal milk.
Hi Elsie and Emma,
I’m Anna from Sweden and I just wanted to say, thank you SO much for inspiring me with all your vegetarian and vegan recipes!!! I’ve been vegetarian (now vegan) for 14 years and I’m so glad that you’re giving me lot’s of new food and combinations to cook! So thankful!
And welcome to Sweden!!
Big hugs!! 🙂
i am very excited to try this myself! love your blog!
This is actually a really nostalgic drink for me because my mother used to make this growing up, but only on special occasions. Mexican horchata is different from Horchata in other Central America countries. We add a bit of lime zest and go easy on the cinnamon so it’s a lot more refreshing. I’ve also tried the Salvadoran version and it is REALLY sweet.
I couldn’t tell you how many times I got drunk drinking rumchata back home in Honduras. You also can add tequila if you REALLY want to kick it up a notch. I like your pictures!!

Ever since I heard the song, I’ve been wanting to try the drink! Thanks for reminding me 🙂

How cool! we used to do this for every party in university but we liked to call it “agua loca” hehe
I’ve never heard of this drink before.
Can you just use store bought rice milk?
Thanks for the recipe – this sounds great!
We are spanish and we are from Valencia, very surprised with this recipe because the basic ingredient is chufa and here there is not but it seems very good too!

Never heard of this (im from the Netherlands…), sounds great though!
Gonna try it 😀
That looks really good and with that rum must be peeerfect.

Ah, delicious!
This sounds so weird but so interesting and intriguing at the same time!

The real spanish horchata recipe is made with tigernuts (chufa), this is a “fake horchata”.
Love it!

Hilarious, I referenced Vampire Weekend when I posted my recipe too. It is a good song and a yummy drink.
http://kittenkaboom.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/horchata/
Love the spanish version though, the original Horxata from Valencia with the tigernuts! 🙂
Looks amazing! I agree, that All Recipes recipe has too much sugar. To cut back on the sweetness, I use unsweetened almond milk and just a touch of maple syrup in my horchata recipe. You can see it here: http://love-library.com/2013/05/30/maple-and-rum-horchatas/
I believe Vampire Weekend talks about the Valencian horchata from Spain that is made with earth almond (chufa) and sugar instead of rice and milk 🙂 maybe they love both, who knows!! xD love that you made a cocktail out of it! iI’ll have to try 🙂
I’ve never had horchata—what could you compare it to? It doesn’t sound very good to me…the rice is throwing me off, so I’m wondering what its like!
amazing! want to make this…

i just tried this recipe! so good! and this is coming from a texan! =)
Nice recipe!! is a very fresh and yummy drink, I love the horchata of my country, EL Salvador, in general in Central america we have great horchata
xo
Actually, horchata is made of just water and chufas (don’t know the english word for it). See the fruit here http://www.lovevalencia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/xufletes.jpg and is usually drunk nearly iced, granizada we call it. It’s a valencian drink, spanish. No rice involved, nor milk.
ahhh I immediately thought of that song when I saw this blog post! Vampire Weekend + A Beautiful Mess blog posts = happy Betty 🙂
This sounds delicious! I can’t wait to try it.
I just finished making homemade horchata when I decided to log on and check y’alls blog today! That’s a pretty funny coincidence 🙂 I think you guys might like this horchata recipe. It uses almond milk and sweetened condensed milk. It involves a little more work but its delicious!
http://www.mangoesandpalmtrees.com/2013/05/horchata.html
Ooh I need to try that!
Do you have to add milk or can it be left out? I’m thinking of making it for a historical feast I’m planning and need to cater for dairy intolerance.
Wow!! I didn’t know this recipe of horchata. Here, in Spain, we call horchata to a drink made of tiger nut (chufa), sugar and water and it’s typical of the east of Spain (Valencia).
This looks amazing! I’ll try it.
Mmmm-I’ve never tried Rum Chata! This looks DELICIOUS!! Even though it’s chilly out, you might enjoy my very easy Horchata Popsicle recipe:

If you add sliced almonds with the rice and water, leave overnight in the fridge then add the rest of the ingredients, you have a drink with a stronger flavor. I use very little sugar, instead add extra vanilla and cinnamon.
To spike it, try vodka instead of rum, that’s the Mexican way!
this looks delicious although I have never seen something similar before in my life – I m pinning it right now and will try it out soon!
horchata is the BEST. there’s a vegan diner near my house that had an horchata milkshake special in the summer and i never got around to going to try it. i’m still super bummed.
Hola Jas, eres latina?? yo soy salvadoreña, viviendo en Costa Rica mientras saco nuevos estudios 😀 y si la horchata de centro américa es diferente, me alegro que te guste la de El Salvador.. please tell me if you understand this XDD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horchata here in Valence we made horchata from tigernuts. Amazing!!!
I had no idea Rumchata was horchata with rum. Horchata is a traditional agua fresca(fresh water)in mexico and one of my favorites.
Yum!! Gonna try this with just straight up rum. Another great addition to Horchata is a shot or two of espresso…mmm! Making this right now, thanks ladies!
