Nothing says Welcome Home like a homemade welcome mat! We've made a lot of painted rugs over the years, but I'm happy to report that this is our easiest and most durable version yet. I found this textured rug at Target and decided to try using porch paint instead of spray paint. The results are bright and long lasting. Here's how:To paint my textured outdoor rug, I used porch paint. This is the same thing I used to paint my patio tiles. Any latex paint will do, but porch paint is especially durable. I used poster board to create a stencil for the letters I wanted to paint and then used contact paper as the stencil while painting since it's sticky and stays in place better. Using a small, coarse brush it took several coats to create an even application of color.
I've been using this rug at the entry of our home for several months now and the design and color are still going strong! Are you in need of a new welcome mat? Try this project in colors you love! xo. elsie

I love the blue and mint colors.
This looks like it’d be fairly resistant to pet hair as well… if I find myself by target I may try it out.

I had no idea there was such thing as “porch paint” but I love this idea! Perfect ever since my last one got stolen!

How cool! I’d be afraid of stepping on it if it’s on the outside, in case of dirty shoes. D: Is it easy to clean without removing paint?
I love it!
Didn’t this get quite pricey having to buy four colors of paint? What was the total price of the project?
I’ve actually been wanting to make a new mat for awhile, and this has pushed me over the edge!
If you have a moment, I’d love for you to check out this contest where you could win one of my art prints!

I think that this is one of the best DIY projects I’ve seen. It’s nice cause I live in an apartment for rent so I cna’t really do too much to it without permission, but this is one simple thing we can do to make it a little more homey. Thanks.

Elsie, where do you get the plain door mats from? (Not this kind but the outdoor one that you painted trees on)
So lovely and colorful! This would make a seriously adorable housewarming gift too.
I really want to make one of these! Perhaps for Christmas. Yes, could be a bit expensive if you don’t have extra paint stored in your garage, but maybe smaller sizes are sold. Was it difficult to make the stencil? Your color selection and font are so happy! Thanks.
What a great idea!! Love this!!
