This past week our sweet pal brought us a bunch of fresh mint, basil and rosemary from her garden (thanks Laura!). Naturally, my mind went straight to cocktail recipes. I had wanted to try a basil simple syrup for a while and my ship had finally come in!
On a side note, my husband hates basil, but I love it. And today when he walked into the kitchen and smelled the syrup I was making, he was like, "What's that?! I want to try it." (insert my evil laugh here) I told him it was basil and he still kinda wanted to try it. And you know what? He liked it. I guess it's my lucky day! I never thought I could get him to love basil OR any mixed drink besides a Bloody Mary. He's an evolving man, what can I say? π
Basil Lemonade Cocktail, serves one
Basil
Lemons
Sugar
Club Soda
Gin
St-Germain
In a tall glass, mix 2 ounces basil simple syrup (recipe below), 1.5 ounces gin, 1 ounce St-Germain, and the juice of three lemons. Add ice and top off with club soda and stir. Stir chopped basil into the drink as a (flavorful!) garnish. Enjoy!
Basil Simple Syrup, makes one jar
Basil
Sugar
To make basil simple syrup, simply combine 1 part sugar and 1 part water in a pot and add 3-4 chopped basil leaves. I usually use 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water for a small batch, or two cups for a batch I want to use for a couple weeks or a party!
This drink is so refreshing! If you don't drink alchohol you would still enjoy it without the liquor. π It's a treat. Perfect for girls night, which for Katie and me is tonight. Hooray!

I love basil too! This sounds so good! Maybe I can convert my husband too! Love your blog. Have been so inspired and motivated at a time when that is so what I needed. Thank you!
I’m not much of a drinker, but I think I may have to concoct a virgin take on this!
Basil is so delicious when it’s fresh. I can only imagine how delicious this cocktail tastes with some refreshing lemon and a splash of alcohol! Mmmm.

Gotta be honest, you girls are making me wish I was a raging alcoholic.
Just saying. π

This sounds delicious. I love Hendricks and lemon, perfect!
Oooh. When I was traveling in Europe this past summer, they had a basil cocktail special at a restaurant I went to in Munich! They called it a Mingwa. Don’t know what it means. I think they used ginger syrup and club soda with gin and crushed the basil leaves in it. I’d forgotten about it until now, and now I really want to make it for myself! So good!
Thanks for bringing back good memories!
This sounds so ideal! All of my favorite things together!

YUM! If you can find it, try Lemon Basil! It tastes exactly like the name says, and is delicious on just about everything (in my opinion).
I’ve had something similar in a restaurant before, but love the idea that I can make it at home!

i never would have thought to put basil and lemonade together. i only think of basil with food not drinks.
Haha that story about Jeremy made me laugh a lot – he sounds just like me! I’ve always hated mushrooms, but sometimes a dish comes along that sneakily puts them in so that they taste good! (Can I just say that this event is rare – mushrooms are totally gross 99% of the time.) π
I can’t wait to try this out. And I love the fact that it’s a great way to preserve some of the summer basil glut for when the autumn nights start to draw in (assuming you can keep your hands of the syrup). A great reminder of summer!
I love those birch-print straws (it’s birch, right?). Where are they from?!
This looks delicious, so refreshing! π x
Looks really good. I can’t wait to try it.
Maybe it’s just perfect that it’s a Saturday, basil is my favourite thing in the world, and I have a fresh plant just sitting on the kitchen counter. There’s my night.

I love basil lemonade!
Though I just make mine mojito style and crush up some basil in the bottom of a lgass before adding the lemonade (and rum,or vodka etc). I’m far to lazy to make the syrup.
Hmmmm this looks yummy! What a brilliant idea.
Made a mojito sorbet recently which worked really well…
