The Moscow Mule is Emma’s and my “cocktail of the year”. Last year we had a Whiskey Ginger phase, but this year is the year of “the Mule”. If you haven’t tried yet, I highly recommend it if you like refreshing and lightly sweet cocktails.
If you’ve never tried Ginger Beer it’s a non-alcoholicย “root beer” soda. It’s not the same thing as Ginger Ale. It’s less sweet. I like to think of Ginger Beer as Ginger Ale’s cooler, older sister. If you don’t drink you should try it with lime juice- SO good!Moscow Mule, serves one
Vodka
Ginger Beer (I like Goslings, Fentimans and Fever Tree best)
Lime
In a glass with ice, combine 2 ounces vodka, juice of half a lime and top it off with Ginger Beer. Garnish with a lime slice and serve in a copper mug if you want to be all fancy! There are other variations of the Moscow Mule that I also love. If you substitute the vodka for rum it’s called a Dark and Stormy. It’s slightly sweeter and really good. If you substitute the vodka for bourbon it’s called a Kentucky Mule. I guess it really just depends on which spirit you like best. I’m normally a bourbon girl, but with this drink I almost always stick with the classic vodka recipe. ๐ I’d love to hear if you’ve tried any other variations that you enjoyed!Cheers! Elsie

ummm yum!
Always add bitters!
Substitue the voldka for gin, and you have yourself a Gin Mule! my favorite ๐
I just came home pretty drunk after having 2 glasses of white wine (no worries- here in Germany it’s about 6 hours later:-) )….so the Moscow Mule is hardly an option but looks really cool! Might make it for my man some day.
Love and good night,

And you get to drink it out of a copper mug which is my favorite part.
This looks yummy!!! I think I would love ginger beer- I am a fan of less sweet!!
I’d love one right about now!! xo

Ooh! Dark and Stormies are my favorite. Gosling’s black rum is sooo good, but I’m up for a new twist! ๐
moscow mules are my husband’s favorite drink, and i gave him some of those copper mugs last year for christmas – his favorite gift! i’m still getting used to how much of a “kick” there is with the ginger beer, but it’s growing on me.
This has been my favorite drink for about two years now, and the copper mug makes them! I add a little mint to mine in the cocktail shaker and I also swear by Bundaberg’s Ginger Beer. I’ve always found it at BevMo, but it has little bits of ginger in it and I think it takes them over the top. I also just found Rachel’s Ginger Beer in Seattle – dying to try their home brews! Lovely drink on a lovely blog!
Mmmmmm love a good Moscow Mule.

my FAVORITE drink!!
What a lovely autumn drink!! Now I just need to find somewhere that sells the copper mugs!
I love being able to find new drinks and cocktails on your blog – stuff I would never try before, but you make them look so easy and sound so delicious.
Wow I LOVE Ginger Beer! I had no ideas of these cocktails! Love it ๐ Thanks for sharing, lovely photos too!
Love Moscow mules, we used to drink these in last year if high school they were very fashionable here for a while

Try Cock n Bull ginger beer, thats my favorite for this drink. And definitely add bitters!
I LOVE mixing drinks and trying new things. I tried iced tea (from one of those bottles in the store) with hawaiin punch and it is just SO GOOD. I also mix sodas, which I’m sure many people do and I always tend to mix coca cola or pepsi (I can’t tell the difference) with other drinks. And I tried this one drink (tastes really disgusting, just saying and I made it) that included orange juice, honey, milk, and I think some water.
I love ginger beer and it is a great addition to any cocktail! We always have some in the house, especially the brand from Jamaica!

Okay this sounds crazy but I’m actually drinking a moscow mule as I read this! I prefer vodka but I put mint in mine. ๐
I second the Cock & Bull ginger beer recommendation that’s what the restaurant I work for uses in all of theirs. I knew about the Moscow Mule and the Dark and Stormy but Kentucky Mule sounds delicious!
And with tequila you get a Mexican Mule. ๐ One of my favorite cocktails on a taco tuesday. I love Mules (of any kind) because I think they’re the perfect intro drink for people who don’t really like alcohol. I’m a craft cocktail fanatic now, but once upon a time I loathed the taste of alcohol and a Gin Gin Mule was my gateway drug of sorts into the world of prohibition-style mixology.
This is my drink of the summer! It is also really yummy with Gin!
I love your drink recipes! Always a hit!
I LOVE ginger beer! So trying this!
This looks like the perfect end of the day drink!
And man, do I ever love that copper cup!

There’s a brand called Crabbie’s, it’s an alcoholic ginger beer. Slice a lime with it over ice and it seems like exactly what you’ve got here, but in a convenient bottle!
Where did you get your copper mug? I have two copper sinks. I love copper. Would you mind sharing. Thank you!
Oh, and the drink looks yummy, too! ; )
Jenni
Looks and probably tastes amazing!
This is one of my favorites too and a good, spicy ginger beer is a necessity! I love to muddle some cucumber in it too!
moscow mules are awesome. i posted a recipe a while back on my blog and noticed that it’s finally coming back into restaurants too! you can easily make your own ginger beer. it’s a fun activity
kw, ladies in navy
I’ve been ordering this out at bars lately, it’s my new favorite too!

I’m a Kentucky Mule gal myself – love that ginger, lime, and bourbon combo…maybe it is because my sweetie is from Kentucky, but that is my go-to cocktail… ๐
Have to use a really strong ginger brew though for the best taste!
love that copper mug, I might need one to enjoy this properly!
I’m pretty sure the Kentucky Mule is my dream drink. I only recently even had ginger beer because I can’t find it in any old supermarket around here for some reason. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for some to try this drink.
yum yum! moscow mules are so delicious! and those copper cups just take it to the next level…
My favorite favorite cocktail. Yum! ๐

Totally a fan of ginger beer! Refreshing is my type of deal, a must try. Thanks for the recipe!
I had my first Moscow Mule a few weeks ago, but it was with cardamom and fresh ginger. Soooo good!
I love this!! The mugs are great too!

Moscow Mules are my favorite!! And not just because I grew up in Moscow (Idaho). They’re so light but flavorful and delicious and oh my god I want one!
It is ALSO great with Gin! note, I am not usually a Gin drinker (I would even say I hate gin) but with ginger beer and lime it is delightful!
These are also my fave! And I just posted a Mexican Mule recipe last week. I think pretty much anything with ginger beer and lime will do just fine no matter what else is in it.
Love my Moscow Mule, and though a bit unorthodox, I love it with fresh mint muddled in.
This sounds delicious!
Agreed!
We’re doing copper mug gifts for clients and had ourselves a little recipe party at the office. Found a few “Mexican Mule” recipes with tequila and gave those a try… big hit! I’m not a tequila guy generally, but these were fantastic.
Basic version would be just switch out the vodka with tequila (blanco or aรฑejo/reposado).
However we made ourselves a “deluxe” version based on a few recipes and it was a-mazing.
– muddle cilantro and a lime wedge with 1oz of simple syrup
– fill with ice
– add tequila (reposado), lime juice and ginger beer.
– rim glass with jalapeรฑo slice (optional)
It was fantastic, even with that jalapeรฑo essence on the rim. Two thumbs up.
Oh man I love mules. They are my drink of the year as well, for sure. The mules I tended to drink over the summer were made with a bit of ginger muddled in the bottom and some mint along with the lime. I have been making them with gin at home too.

mmmm, the best moscow mule I’ve ever had is from culver city, ca. I don’t know what it is, but this town knows how to make a mule. Perhaps its the certain kind of ginger beer they use. I know they use fresh ginger, and bitters…..gives it a nice spice.
It’s all about the G&G… gin and ginger! It’s my go to party drink.
Any tips on where to find the traditional copper mugs?
One of my faves! If you make a Dark and Stormy, but change the Ginger Beer to Ginger Ale it becomes a Light and Stormy ๐

Try to add some cucumber slices, tastes sooooo good and is the perfect addition for a moscow mule ๐
… by the way: love your blog! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
Lovely pics!!!

FUN!!!! I’m gonna go buy some ginger beer and try this tonight!!!

I recently started following your blog and I love it! I’ve also fallen in love with the Mule this year – we tried a great combination and we’re calling it the Vermont Mule. Use Cabin Fever maple whisky as the liquor. If you can’t find that, Crown Royale has a maple one out this year that also works. We skip the lime and garnish with a bit of nutmeg, tastes like Thanksgiving!
How sweet! Great pictures and what a cool recipe! It’s always fun to add unique items to my bar cart! ๐

I make this at home every other weekend. I’m a BIG Whiskey/Scotch drinker and this is a very refreshing drink that will produce satisfying results.
Happy Hump Day!

I love a Moscow Mule! My Gramma, of all people, introduced me to it. It seems it was a classic during WW2. Cheers to keeping it alive!
Yum Yum, home made cocktail…
It’s not “Moscow” Mule if the vodka isn’t russian. haha
in such a big mug – strong!
Oh, I love a good moscow mule!!! I will need to try this version! But where, oh where did you get that cute copper mug??
Simple ingrediants, great drink recipe

My favorite drink – along with Dark & stormy. If possible I normally add a dash of Angustura bitters to my Moscow Mule – Have never seen it served in a copper mug here in Denmark though ๐
I don’t know what it’s called, but I love the ginger and tequila with a shot lemon and lime, some don’t like it, but I just can’t pass up tequila ๐
I love ginger beer drinks… can’t wait to try this out!

I’m in love with Moscow Mules. They are my go to drink if I feel like something a little sweeter than a vodka soda. My favorite ginger beer is called Cock and Bull.. i’ve been buying it for a few years to make moscow mules at home. =) I still need to get a cooper mug though.
Yum! YUm! YUm!

Out here in Tucson, AZ, we have Mexican Mules (tequila + ginger beer + lime). My favorite!
Jenni, you can buy them here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPGZG68
Please use Fever Tree Ginger Beer!!! Or at least check it out.
I’m glad you guys had a post on the Moscow Mule! Ive been drinking these for years! Another important factor in this drink is the Copper mug, its a must ๐ I didn’t have vodka the other to make this and so I just used tequila, it was SOOOOO good!! I don’t know what that is called but its yummy ๐
Fan of all these cocktails.
Last night with the vodka and ginger beer I included a splash of
St. Germaine. (Elderflower Liquer)
For sure add bitters! It enhances the flavor and gives it a lovely pink color. I also like to add a slice of fresh ginger.
Hi Jenni- i found it on Amazon! ๐

Hi Jess! I found mine on Amazon.

My neighborhood (Nashville!) pub does the Moscow Mule, and then all the other spirits with clever horse names, like Kentucky Thoroughbred (bourbon), English Ass (gin), Mexican Burro (tequila), Caribbean Seahorse (rum), Scottish Stallion (Scotch, natch). I get such a kick out of the names, not quite sure why…and they’re all delicious!
A meadow mule – ginger beer, vodka, lavender. I know you’ll love that!
I have to say, you all seem to drink a lot! Whoa.
We like to add either a splash of Cointreau or a splash of raspberry cordial to our mules…or both! One of my friends described as a “fruit tingle in a drink”
It was a Mule year for my boyfriend and I as well! They are so delish and so easy to make! Goya makes an excellent ginger beer (@ a great price) as well– it’s so gingery you almost have to cut it with a splash of Vernor’s! Last year our cocktail of choice was the Old Fashioned and the year before that it was Mojitos. I’m getting into spiked, hot ciders this fall!
http://beautifuldaysgoneby.wordpress.com/
Village Pub in Nashville has amazing Mules! The English Ass (haha), has Gin and is outstanding!
I love this drink, and I used to drink lots of dark & stormy’s when I lived in Bermuda, as it sort of their “official drink” – lol. The Gosling’s ginger beer is from Bermuda…
There’s a restaurant here in Laguna Beach, CA (Broadway by Amar Santana), where the Moscow Mule always seems like a fitting way to end the evening (the chilled and frosty copper mugs make it).
For gift giving, I love to give a set of four Moscow Mule mugs with the drink recipe attached (especially for newlyweds).
I love moscow mules and anything in a copper mug! So good.
My favorite Mule variation is:
Muddle half a lime, a couple of mint sprigs and 3 fresh jalapeno rings
2 oz Vodka
a splash of bitters
top with Ginger Beer
mmmm. I like to think the ginger beer, citrus and mint help my body to detox and the jalapeno heat increases my metabolism…so many healthful properties in this cocktail! ha. ๐
Dublin Mule
Jameson in place of Vodka.
Oh lawd are they tastey!

I love the mug!

Kentucky Mules are basically my go-to drink for everything. My favorite ginger beer is Stewart’s (nice and spicy!) — or Blenheim’s, if you can find it. I’ve started making my own ginger syrup, too. So perfect in those copper mugs!
Moscow Mule is my all time favorite drink! They’re sooo delicious.
I have had a Moscow Mule with cucumber vodka…. to DIE FOR. so good. I recommend!
Use crabbies alcoholic ginger beer (real ginger beer) not soda/pop like the other ginger “beers”….
This is my favorite drink! I had one in San Francisco with cucumber slices in it. It’s my favorite twist on an already refreshing drink.
Philip and I are Ginger Beer connoisseurs ๐ He doesn’t drink alcohol, but I LOVE Moscow Mules!
Moscow Mule is definitely also my cocktail of the year:) I always add cucumber slices, real ginger and pepper grains, this makes it even more special because it gets a little bit spicy! And it’s always the best part to eat the cucumber slices in the end!
Mind blowing experienced…. Drink with COPPER MUG
