You are witnessing a first here today guys. Trey and I received this awesome electric fondue pot from his grandmother for our wedding. I was SO excited! I love fondue. I prefer the melted cheese or chocolate variety myself while Trey is a big fan of the super hot oil kind. As life goes sometimes, it’s been over three months since we tied the knot, and I still hadn’t had a chance to break out our new fondue pot yet. Yeesh. I need to get my priorities straight.
Before we invite friends over for a fondue night I needed to make sure I… well… actually know how to make fondue. This is a SUPER simple beer + cheese fondue. You can use any kind of beer you like, but I highly recommend a brown ale, as the flavor was awesome for this. ๐Newcastle Fondue
1 clove of garlic
8 oz. shredded gruyere cheese
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup beer
pepper + nutmeg to season
First shred the cheese and combine in a bowl with the flour. Mix it around so that every piece gets coated by flour.
Slice the garlic clove down the center and rub it all over the inside of your pot. Mince the garlic and add it to pot, cook over low heat for a minute or so.Pour in the beer and turn up the heat. Cook just until the beer begins to boil. Now turn the heat down and begin adding the cheese. If you are cooking your fondue in an electric fondue pot use a wooden spoon to stir so you don’t scrap the pan. As the cheese melts add more handfuls until you’ve added all the cheese. Sprinkle in a little nutmeg and pepper. If you aren’t using an electric fondue pot once all the cheese is melted you can pour it into your serving fondue pot.Now let’s talk dipping sides for a second. An obvious and necessary go-to is bread. Everybody likes bread and cheese. Duh. I also highly recommend apples (granny smith is my favorite). The sweetness of the apples pairs well with gruyere cheese. Trust me. Then feel free to serve any of your favorite veggies roasted or lightly sauteed. Cut everything into bite size peices and serve on a large plate.Simple. Easy. Hard to mess up. Perfect for a a get together. If you are serving more than 3-4 people I recommend doubling the recipe above. You don’t want to run out of melty cheese. That can cause riots. I’d riot. But that’s just me. xo. Emma

Whoa. I always thought fondue would be difficult and messy to make….and not that I need yet another kitchen gadget, but this looks reeeeally tasty!
There is nothing I love more than a good fondue! Using beer is such a good twist from the usually white wine. Great for fall and winter!

please try the recipy with white wine, its so much more traditional and tasty. You can also use blue cheese, but thats more for the experienced fondue taste!
Great things to dip are pears (pears & cheese is a ultimate classic), figs and grapes.
Greetings from europe
AHH I want fondue now! I once went to a friends where we had a three course fondue meal it was incredible. I may call him up and force him to have another dinner like that!

As a swiss girl maybe it’s weird to say that I don’t like fondue!
But I give you the tip to eat your fondue with pickled gherkin and banana!
When I was young I ate it this way!
In here, in Switzerland, we also use potatoes instead of bread and, we love it.
Goat cheese fondue is also soooo good. In Geneva we have two restaurants who offers it !
Fondue for ever ๐
I have the sweetest fondue set that I basically stole from my cousin (my aunt had promised it to me, forgot and gave it to her daughter in law and I insisted she get it back and give it to me! – what a brat!) and I keep forgetting to use it. Definitely need to follow this inspiration ASAP.
mm, this looks wonderful! such a simple, fun and delicious meal! thanks, emma!

This looks amazing ladies! Definitely a treat.
Excellent use of a Newcie Brown Ale there! It’s brewed just up the road from where I live :))
As someone from Newcastle (UK) I am loving the addition of Brown Ale.

Nom nom nom. Also, cornstarch works a little better than flour. ๐ I work at a fondue restaurant and it’s fun to try to recipes, my favorite one we have right now is roasted garlic, caramelized onions and then we’re using a calavander/gruyere blend and for the base we’re using Triangles Belgian Golden Ale, all local ingredients, it’s amazing!
I love fondue, haven’t done it in so long!
Although it sounds almost like a sacrilege to my Swiss ears to try anything other than the already perfect Swiss Fondue recipe, this is oddly tempting!
If you want to vary things a bit, other popular recipes include Champagne Fondue, Porcini or Morel Fondue, and even Tomato Fondue.
@Holly, my mom doesn’t drink any alcohol either and we usually replace the wine (or in this case the beer) with non-alcoholic cider or a sharp apple juice. Although technically if you cook the wine for a while any alcohol should evaporate. Bon appetit!
holy yum!!! I love the idea of brussels sprouts with fondue!
mmmm!!! I love it!!! I need a fondue. Pronto.

Loving the use of a British product in one of your posts!! ๐
Fondues are the best, so many great things to dip – mini corn, broccoli, bread, yumm!
Also Emma – I would love it if you did a post/had any suggestions for lunch box ideas. Just started a new job and have to leave by 7am, so trying to make things the night before, but finding it hard to think of easy/vaguely healthy ideas that don’t need to be in the fridge etc! Please help!!
I love fondue but have never made it at home. An electrical one would be so much easier than working over a candle. This sounds good.

Thanks so much for posting this Emma! I used to make fondue in college all the time and that was quite a long time ago. I’m so excited to dust off my ole pot and make this recipe:)
Wow, this sounds amazing!
Looks soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo goooooooooooooooooood! If only I ate cheese. Haha.
Ive eaten a cheese fondue while travelling overseas and it was delicious, but have never thought to try and make one. This sounds devine!

how perfect to have outside since it’s starting to get a bit cooler the hot cheese would be perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the first 10 years of marriage we had a non-electric fondue pot still in its box and wrapping from the 70s, that a friend’s mother had hanging around and gave us. We finally busted out that sucker last year and have done so every few months since then, even inviting a friend over for a fondue dinner. We’ve only done ‘Trey’s style’ with hot oil so far. It could be the most fun had at a dinner table ever!
This looks soooo good:)
OMG yummy!

Mmmm, we got given a fondue pot about 6 months ago and haven’t tried it yet – I might have to crack it out! I love some of the suggestions in the comments as well, especially the one about using goats cheese.
Love the idea of beer and cheese fondue! Fantastic. And yes, I’d imagine Newcastle would be a good choice. Thanks for sharing! Have lots of fantastic fondue parties ๐
Best,

Oh, my goodness, I so want some of that. I love fondue. I love cheese, and chocolate is one of life’s necessities. Now I will HAVE to get a fondue pot, because I bake bread — too much bread, and that will help me get rid of some of the excessive amount of bread in my freezer.
Looks amazing! I’ve never really had a savoury fondue before, always gone for the chocolate one ๐
Need to try this, maybe with some chedder instead, my Mum gave me a 70’s retro fondue set and I haven’t tried it out yet. Think we’ve got some Sussex ale that needs using too, so that’s a good excuse.
Hurray! I’m from Newcastle but far away from home at the mo! Can’t wait to make this
Ooooh a beer fondue! We live in France and have been making our own fondue for years now, but have always used kirsch or eau du vie. I’m excited to try this recipe out!
Ohhhh goddddd fondue!! Sooo good. This recipe looks awesome, and I LOVE the idea of using brussels sprouts!! So brilliant.
Emma, you just made my day! I was obsessed with fondue when I lived in Switzerland and haven’t had it since I’ve been back (almost 2 years!). I will definitely be making this. Thanks for the recipe!
I’ve been to Newcastle! My boyfriend and I spent three months there last year, and I would LOVE to go back! Thanks for this post!
Would any meats pair well with this recipe as well?
Yum! That looks delicious and easy…we may just need to break out our fondue pot again
Yummy!!

I adore fondue. I got my husband one as part of his birthday present back in march and he loves if. I can’t better you have newcastle brown ale. I live about 20 minutes from where that it brewed in the uk.
As Swiss I really recommend you to try out vacherin cheese to make your fondue, also add some kirsch and believe me this will be delicious.Good dippings are potatoes and cropped onions, yummy.
