It's hard not to undervalue salad dressing, am I right? If I even think to put it on my shopping list, I inevitably end up looking at the options and thinking, "I don't know. Do I even need to spend that much money on salad dressing?"
I'm really cheap. But that's beside the point. Salad dressing's home in the grocery aisles is usually next to neighbors like mayo or vinegar. It's not exactly prime real estate. I mean, you never see salad dressing in the same isle as chips or cookies. And yet, I can't help but feel the need to point out that salad dressing is often the savior of vegetables.Seriously though, it totally is. Salads, in my humble opinion, kind of suck without dressing. (Feel free to disagree. I've known a few folks who really loved dry salad. And I'm not going to tell you how to live your life.) I don't know about you, but a good dressing can really make or break a salad to me. And I'm happy to report this particular dressing can indeed make one. πGreen Goddess Dressing, makes about 2 cups. (Lots of great recipes for this out there, mine is adapted from here.)
1/2 cup mayo
1/3 cup buttermilk
1 lime (juice only)
1/4 cup chives
1/4 cup parsley
2 garlic cloves
salt + pepper
Add all ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth. Pour into a jar or sealable container and refrigerate until ready to serve. You can store this in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. If you like creamy, flavorful dressings you are gonna LOVE this. Enjoy! xo. Emma

This sounds delicious! I am totally in the same boat with salad dressing at the grocery store, and always vow to make my own, but just end up dressing my salad with oil and vinegar. This one looks awesome and sounds really easy (and inexpensive) to make so I’ll have to try it out!

Your photography is always so killer. Making your own dressing is smart for so many reasons. Not only do you avoid the hefty price tag, but you can actually pronounce everything that goes in it…
I totally eat my salad dry, but I agree a good dressing and its a whole new world! Definitely will have to try this!

I am one of those who wants my salad dry, I REALLY don’t get why anyone would want to destroy some fantastic veggies with a sticky dressing.. Love sauces with my food, by I want my salad dry and fresh. Maybe it is because I hate vinegar and that seems to be what most people pour on their salads..
I want to be a goddess. Therefore, i will make this.

So delicious and so simple! We host a family night at our house once a week..looks like I’ll have a new salad dressing to try out π
Totally agree, a salad without dressing is just rabbit food (in my humble opinion)!
This recipe looks delicious! I’m not a huge fan of mayo though, so I would love to try it swapping in greek yogurt instead.
Thanks for sharing!

I’ve never been a homemade dressing maker, but I consider veggie sauces dips, and I’m always up for making a dip!

Yum! I’ve never tried it, but we actually have most of the ingredients at home. Might have to give it a go! π

Yep, another dry salad eater here. I figure it’s also the vinegar, and that they are all pretty much savory and creamy. It’s not exactly by choice, but I do love how the salads I eat are actually healthy instead of covered in calories.
I eat my salad dry too – I hate when all you can taste is the dressing and not the actual salad itself. But I do like to have a little bit of dressing on the side so I can dip my fork into it – for me thats the perfect amount of dressing. This one looks pretty cool though.

I was just thinking of Green Goddess dressing today! Haven’t had it in years. Can’t wait to try this.
I love dressing, but I also like dry veggies/salads. Easy to please π

I buy this amazing goddess salad dressing from Trader Joes, but would love to know the recipe to make it myself. This looks yum! I agree about salads. I am always amazed at people who can have salads for dinner. So sad. I prefer hot food and dressing (always) on my salad =)

I’ve never heard of Green Goddess dressing, but this sounds amazing! I love a good dressing, but not too much! I’d love to try this.
I can’t wait to try this one out…

The name alone has me hooked. I like the idea of substituting greek yogurt. The thought to make my own dressings never even crossed my mind until my husband started making basic vinagarette recipes, and I now I have hard time paying out for something I can make less expensively for myself.
yum! I am always looking for new salad dressings since things get boring otherwise with the same old caesar and balsalmic vinagraitte! thanks for sharing this recipe! xx. gigi. http://www.gigikkitchen.blogspot.com
hm looks so tasty!

Ooh! I like the suggestion to swap out mayo for greek yogurt. Makes me feel a little better about slathering it on a healthy salad.

Nothing beats Green Goddess dressing. Also so simple to make. Thanks for sharing!
This looks delicious.
My store keeps the dressing by the veggies, well the fancy ones, but they usually aren’t much more than the craft ones and I’m really picky.

Adding, hempseeds, cashews or tahini instead of mayo is a great way to make it a bit healthier (or vegan) but maintains the creaminess!! cashews work great to for tomato “cream” sauces. π
Looks delicious!!
I gotta say, I notice a vast different in how Elsie and Emma’s personalities shine through on posts… Emma totally reminds me of how my BFF is! Sarcastic and cute! Am I wrong?
I’d love to try this out some time π

Mmmh, the picture is a true teaser! Yummy. When I scrolled down to your recipe though, I must admit, I was a little disappointed. Do you really do (kill?) your dressings with mayo? I have stopped long ago to use mayo.
Here we have a product calles “Soy Cuisine”. It replaces cream or mayo, but is as creamy as it needs to be to replace both. It’s soy based and adds a perfect health benefit to your nutrition. Try if you can find it in your stores.
This is what I use:

Sounds great! And I’m always so happy to see people in the states using good ol german WECK glassware…it’s the BEST! π I’ll take one of those instead of a mason jar any time
woooow. I discovered your blog today and I love it as soon as I start surfing on it!!
Congrats

This dressing looks lovely ! I really would like to make some. I eat raw foods and like to make my own dressings n dips. I’d probably exchange mayo and buttermilk with a vegan alternative or something.
The sauce looks delicious!

Awesome! This looks delicious!
And I totally agree, dry salads are no bueno. My husband is weird and can eat just plain lettuce and call it a salad. Umm no. That’s rabbit food. It needs other ingredients to constitute a salad. Right? π
I do have to make this! Love anything made with buttermilk or parsley. It is amazing how inexpensive dressing is but I also end up not buying it and then like other readers who have posted, settle for a quick vinegar/oil/herb at the last minute. My guilty pleasure on salad is inexpensive lemon pepper that is more lemony than peppery. Tangy heaven!
And no added chemicals……….Bravo!
ive been wanting to try my hand at making salad dressings myself, this looks like a good one to start with.
I always make this instead of the milk I use yoghurt! π
salad dressing is important to me especially as a vegetarian! i often just count on oil and vinegar to jazz things up. nice post!
joannabread.blogspot.ca
I will need to try this one out! I usually just make a regular balsamic dressing with a little mustard (and parmesan cheese if it’s a wild day) in it, but to prevent it from becoming too boring, I like to add basil or dill to the salad.

Looks really good – for people who are vegan or dont want to use milk or buttermilk you can use high quality coconut milk or rice milk. Its also good with yogurt- again if you eat dairy. I love homemade dressings – I never ever buy them and only use fresh ones. That’s why having a little herb garden is so special to me! love your pics

This recipe sounds delicious. I used to make my own Catalina Island dressing but completely forgot my recipe! I know there’s ketchup in it.
Sounds just too wonderful .. however, I never know what to do with the left over buttermilk besides pancakes.

Hi there,
am new in blogging,
can you tell me how do you make those simple images look so nice???
check out my blog and tell me waht do you think,

I’m another person who doesn’t really eat salad dressing much. I tend to like lemon juice squeezed over it best, but a good salad dressing is also great… I just find the store bought ones don’t rate as good to me. Homemade is better by far! I’m going to give this one a try in summer when I’m back to eating salads again π
I agree, salads are boring without a dressing. Have never tried to make my own – will try this one π x
sounds delicious and super easy! I’ve actually never had green goddess dressing, so I’ll be interested to try this one!
