I'd be lying if I said I felt ready to share my home with you. We're still very much in the renovation process around here! I'm realizing more and more that the process will never feel 100% complete… and that I don't want it to. It's so much fun to be continually working on our space. Every weekend is filled with small projects (sometimes big ones too!) and I'm enjoying this new lifestyle.
So without further ado, here's our living room before & after…We'll call this "phase one".Before: This is how the living room looked the first time we saw it. Months of house shopping taught me to always keep an open mind. I felt like I was wearing style goggles. We could walk into a home that was totally not our style and instantly envision it painted in a different way, usually with new flooring and new furniture. We instantly fell in love with our home when we saw it. The living room is the first room you see after walking through the front door. We knew we would be changing a lot, but it had good bones (and giant windowsβyay!!).
The first thing we did in the living room was paint the walls and the trim white. Luckily, the trim was only painted in two rooms. The color we chose is Thistle Seed by Valspar. It's a nice warm white, great for rooms with a lot of natural light. We were able to keep the floors as they were in the downstairs rooms, which was really lucky. They have beautiful, original hardwood.
Speaking of natural light, we chose light, lace curtains, because I couldn't stand the idea of blocking out any natural light. The couch we chose is the Cleveland Sofa from Thrive Furniture. I love the bright color. When Jeremy and I were house shopping, we agreed that we would bring most of the color into our home through furniture and accessories and work with a mostly neutral palette for walls and floors. We are so glad we made this choice! The house feels so bright and cheerful, which is really important for me as someone who works from home.
We've already rearranged this room at least ten times. Before these photos, Rachel actually gave us her tips via Facetime. Ha! That was fun. :) Although this probably won't be the last home we live in, Jeremy and I truly consider this our dream home. I guess that's a good way to feel, no matter what stage you are in. This attitude affects all our choices. So many of the pieces we've picked out for this home are things we've been dreaming about for years, like the hanging chair. It was definitely on my "dream list" for a long time! It's been fun to collect records together. We buy them for gifts at the holidays and collect vintage ones too. Our niece is obsessed with the record player. She's only three, but she already knows how to work it all by herself and she loves dancing, which is the best thing in the world. ;)
The feather garland in our window was a holiday decoration that I never took down (oops). I like how the light reflects through the feathers on a sunny day.
Our mantel is always a work in progress. We try to change it up often. Right now there is a blueprint copy of one of our first photos. I wanted to give it a more graphic look for a photo shoot, so we cut out black paper triangles and taped them up on the wall. It's temporary, but looks cool from a distance.
I collect vintage soda bottles to use as vases. I love collecting but have to be careful, because in my last home I collected WAY too much for our space. I've learned to be very choosy, only bringing home my very favorite pieces and donating unused items each season. Thanks for taking a look at our living room. We're thankful that it's a space that can be used for so many things…relaxing, work, photo shoots and (most importantly) a play space for my doggies. π These photos were taken about a month ago, and already the space has changed a lot. I can't wait to share more phases, projects and updates with you. It's definitely a work in progress!

Looks fantastic, Elsie!!! LOVE the sofa… we’re looking for a sectional…Thrive may be the place we get it from! My boyfriend and I are in the process of (very slowly) renovating our new house. I just recently posted our living room make over. I totally understand the feeling of not being ready to share your progress! We still have SO much to do, but it’s such fun creating your dream home! Check out our latest improvements (though yours put ours to shame!).

That print above the fire place is adorable. I just love that whole set up!
My husband and I recently bought our first home and have been in the renovation process also. Watching your progress has been so inspiring!
Beautiful! π I love to see how it looked before. Inspiring for future home purchases.
What a lovely room Elsie! Do you have anything other than the net curtains on your windows at night? I have just moved ino a new house and love the light that net curtains bring but I wonder would people be able to see into the house at night, particularly when the lights are on. What do you do? Or do you have any suggestions on how to keep the look of the windows minimalist while maintaining privacy?
I’m sure this is a very obvious question but where can I get those shoes!?!?!
WOW. It looks fantastic and I love seeing your style of decorating.
Your living room is so bright and colorful and the pictures are as perfect as usual!

I love how very personal your living room is; like it couldn’t really belong to anyone else…and that’s what a home is supposed to feel like, I think π Very cute, love it!

gorgeous. love the dr pepper tray
I love it. That sofa is a dream π I actually have the very same black and white IKEA pillow- it’s one of my favorite home decor items.
You have done such a great job, as was expected. π Looking forward to see what your patio is going to look like.
Ahhhh I’ve been looking forward to this post forEVER! All the sneak peeks on Instagram have been so beautiful and exciting. The yellow chair is to DIE for! I adore spaces with lots of natural light and I think the lace curtains are a beautiful idea.
You are so creative and inspirational. I can’t wait to see the rest of your house!!

I love how your living room turned out! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store! π
Your living room is lovely, so light and airy. A hanging chair is on my dream list too, don’t think my landlord would be too keen on me getting one though!
Louise, my shoes are Swedish Hasbeens. Emma’s are Lotta from Stockholm. π
Aoife,
We only have lace curtains. They definitely aren’t the most private curtains ever, but we’re ok with this since our home is pretty far from the street. We don’t change by the windows at night though… haha π
I absolutely love the magazine rack! Where did you get it? Was it thrifted?
http://www.lavieculturelle.com/
Sarah- yes, I bought it at a flea market. π
Wow! What a beautiful transformation! I am so happy that you get to create your dream home! I looks so bright and fun!
LOVE your beautiful space! Is the record cart vintage?
what a change! that is a crazy difference of before & after!
outstanding job!
http://theeoptimist.blogspot.com
ha ha! Thanks Elsie! Just love the clean and light look of the net curtains in your home and luckily we have lovely wood trim detailing around our windows, our victorian house would originally have had wooden shutters on the inside but they’ve been removed. Sometimes traditional curtains can really close down a room- the “before” pictures in your post perfectly demonstrate this. The windows are so much bigger in the after picture and I think I need to research blinds I could pull down at night but are nearly invisible behind net during the day because we DO live near a road!! thanks for replying to my comment! Lots of good wishes from Ireland x
I love the record player! Where did you find it, if you don’t mind me asking?
It’s so much more fun and lighter! I love it (:

Amazing room!!! Love all the natural light. The pops of color through accessories is the best.
Love it, Els! Remodeling my house was one of my favorite things I’ve ever done! You and Emma need to come for a pug play date sometime. π
Oh my goodness, the change is incredible! I absolutely love everything you’ve done to it!
I wish this was my living room! When I think about one day owning a home, it is the constant evolution and weekend projects that appeals most of all!

Love your space! I used to always find myself rearranging spaces just to give it a fresh feel.. but I always ran into trouble with things I hung up on the walls.. I ended up with too many holes! My husband and I are in the process of looking for our first place and I can’t till we find one to put our personal touches!
love love love the transformation!
your hope is so beautiful, and such an inspiration! i absolutely love the yellow accents and the hanging chair π
Hey Elsie, it looks great! I’m curious to know where you got your fireplace screen?
Hi Mish,
The screen came with our home. It’s cast iron & painted (probably super old). π Thanks so much!

I love the way the lace curtains let in the light! Beautiful!

Beautiful! the atmosphere is so nice and bright! no matter it is not your definite house, it is great to feel that is THE house to share your life with the person you love!
stunning space. love the pops of color against the white walls.
I just love the gold record stand. Can’t seem to find it on West Elm or Ikea’s site. Any ideas where else to look?
Looks pretty cool, the couch is the center of that living room, amazing color and size :3 keep going with the good work.
is exciting right?
Love the yellow. Are you ever going to do a video tour of your house when it’s “more completed”? Because I would be ALL over that. π
Love this room, though. Too cute.

Oh my gosh what an amazing transformation! Not usually a fan of yellow but I absolutely love this!
http://sequinsandpolkadots.blogspot.com/
The natural light is really gorgeous! And the way the living room looks too π A great inspiration for mine!
Your living room is amazing! Well done!
This is so bright and beautiful! I love it. Incorporating plants is on my decor list too.
I’m curious if this is the room you hang out and watch tv or what not in, like if its a practical family living room or if you have a different spot for that? Its so beautiful, but I feel like I would hit my head on the lamp or how about people looking in from the street at night with the light shades?
Just curious about the practicality of having such a beautiful space I guess?
Heather- good question… we actually have a second living area upstairs attached to our bedroom, that’s where our TV is. It’s this room- http://abeautifulmess.com/2012/10/a-peek-at-elsies-living-room.html
xoxo.
Rachel, I would LOVE to do a video tour in the future… maybe next fall or winter. That would be SO much fun. Emma too!
Brittany, the gold table is a flea market find (I believe it’s called a typewriter table?) and we spray painted it gold. π
I love both yours and Emma’s shoes…where are they from? I’ve been looking at various clogs and just can’t decide. The color of Emma’s are one of my favorite shades of brown for shoes.
Great bright space. Great job decorating.
Beautiful living room! I love how airy it feels. And the hanging chair <3
Do you happen to know what the design of that ottoman is called? After seeing it on your blog, I've become slightly obsessed with finding one at a flea market/eBay, but I don't know what it's called!
Jessica- this style of ottoman is Franco Albini. I was also obsessed, but not willing to pay the $$$ that they sell for on Etsy and eBay. Luckily, we found one at a flea market for $30. Anyway- keep looking… you’ll find one! π
Your living room colors match my blog template π
I love yellow and grey together, such a cool combination!

Wow, great transformation! I wouldn’t have thought of the potential of your home from how it first looked! Great job, guys! Love the silver lamp by the sofa and love that you coordinated your clothes with the look of your home for the photoshoot! Really stylish! = )
Um, that ladder. HELLO CUTE! Also, you two are freaking adorable.
You two are adorable. I love how so much sunlight comes into the room now. I also love how glass bottles are used as flower holders!

You two did such an amazing job. I can’t get over how much I adore that couch, and the yellow step ladder with plants. You are a genius!
Wow what a contrast from before and after! It looks amazing π
This makes me want to have a yellow sofa!:D Love it.

It’s really beautiful!! You are lucky to have those huge windows! Light is everything!
That hanging seat it awesome! I love the white walls and curtains with coloured furniture! I’m planning slightly off white walls, really light tan floor tiles and white lace curtains for my soon to be built place, but I’m unsure about lounges yet… I know I want a big corner lounge, but I’m thinking brown with coloured cushions and throws. Your living room gives me lots of inspiration, though!
I really like how the curtains are not see-through but still let in all the light. The whole room made such a big change.
I love the bright colors! I do a smiliar thing, work with a neutral palette for wall and floors, and use bright colors for furniture (which is why I love my bright red sofa). TFS! π
What a great design, you are very creative.
The unique style you created would perfectly go with a yellow Galaktika up-cycled lamp at http://shop.moorbi.com/products-page/lockengelot/galaktika-yel-lamp.
Very cool – I love many of the details… especially all the bottles with the flowers – great!

Your house makes me so happy π I’m in love with your hanging chair and couch, and the fact that (as far as I can tell) there is no tv. I dont even like tv very much and i hate having to look at/decorate around ours. ha!
A very inspiring space. I love the idea of keeping the walls neutral and bringing in the color with furniture. That way when you get sick of a color you don’t have to repaint your whole home, you can just re-upholster your sofa or buy new throw pillows!

Where did you get the black and white pillow?
Oh Elsie, you have made the place look stunning! LOVE all that light coming through, and the yellow sofa is fab.
Can we do a house swap? π
No, seriously. Your living room is amazing, I could just move right in and start living there. The sofa is one of my favorites as well as the Dr Pepper side table.
I also hate blocking out natural light. We have chosen to have no curtains at all, except for the bed room. I want to feel ‘connected’ to the world outside.
Where’d you find the metal shelving unit? Love it!
Diana- our metal shelves are from a local flea market. π

Your living room is beautiful! I was wondering, though, could you tell me what kind of plants you have living in this room? I am wanting to bring the outdoors in a bit, and need some ideas for plants that would work well indoors. Thanks so much!
