Yesterday I teased you with my so called pizza hummus. Well, apparently, it put me in the mood for pizza. Have you ever tried making deep dish pizza in a cast iron pan? Its awesome. You should try it. This cast iron pan pizza is extra special for two reasons.Number one: This is a BBQ pizza. I love BBQ sauce. As many of you know I subscribe to a pescatarian diet so any excuse to eat BBQ sauce makes me happy because, I don't get to all that often.
Number two: This pizza is stuffed crust. Boom.Pizza Crust, from the King Arthur Flour website.
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (one package)
a generous pinch of sugar
1 1/8 cups warm water
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cups flour
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
In a small bowl stir together the water, sugar and yeast. Allow this to sit and foam up (aka activate) for 10 minutes. In a larger bowl stir together the flour and salt. Now stir in the yeast, water and oil until a crumbly dough forms. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until the dough becomes elastic-like (5-6 minutes by hand, less if you use a mixture). Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover and allow to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
This will make plenty of dough for a one large stuffed crust pizza. If you choose to use this dough recipe for a regular (meaning not deep dish/stuff crust) pizza then it will make enough for two pizzas.Once your dough is ready, lightly grease the bottom of your cast iron pan. Roll out the dough (or toss it in the air if your talented like that) and place in the pan. The edges of the dough should reach up the sides. Fold cheese sticks into the edge of the crust. I divided my cheese sticks in half before doing this. I think it's a little better if you use the whole cheese stick. Live and learn.
Oh. I know. Mad crust skillz. Yeah, well, I used to work at a pizza place in high school and early college. Now add the sauce (BBQ sauce!) toppings and cheese. Cook on the stove top, on high/medium heat for 3 minutes. Then, carefully, pop the whole pan in the oven at 375°F for 20-22 minutes. Carefully remove from the oven and allow to cool just a little before sliding your pizza onto a cutting board.Mmmmm. Cheesy crusts. Happy pizza making! xo. Emma

This, like all your recipes, looks fab! I am Scottish so there are not a huge amount of Kraft products over here. Could you suggest other makes of the ‘cheese sticks’ that you refer to? Or do you think cheese strings would work?! I suppose I could just cut a block into strips? Thanks Emma. Lucy xx
I make pizza all the time but I have never made a deep dish cast iron pizza!!! This must be amazingly delicious!! =)

Genius! I can not wait to try this!!! Stuffed crust is the best!
Homemade stuffed crust pizza, yes please! I love that you used cheese sticks, great idea. As a Chicagoan, I feel duty bound to point out this isn’t quite a deep dish pizza, you need about five more pounds of sauce and cheese on there 😉

this looks delicious. I’m adding this one to my arsenal. Thanks! And what a clever idea, with the string cheese!
I don’t know if you had me at the fresh avocado or the stuffed crust… Or if it was the use of your cast iron pan… Or maybe just the simple word ‘pizza’… But this looks absolutely heavenly! Lots of times, I love to look at your ideas, but I don’t always create myself… But this one I definitely want to actually try!
Nice! I just bought a cast iron pan, so I will definitely be trying this out. Thanks!
This. Looks. So. Delicious. Jalapeno cheese stuffed crust?! why do I never think of these things?!?!
i am literally trying this tonight ! I haven’t made pizza in years, but keep telling my boyfriend I’m going to do it. Tonight is the night….

I am drooling…this looks incredible! Will try it out soon! 🙂
OMG THIS LOOKS FANTASTIC!! I just had a tonsillectomy, so have to wait another week or so, but this is definitely the first proper meal I’ll cook! What a delicious idea!
I do this all the time..but i do one thing different..instead of oiling pan and immediately putting the dough in ..oil your skillet put it in a preheated oven till the pan smokes a little..already have your dough shaped roughly the size of the pan put dough in smoking pan.. top.. put back in oven to cook..the sizzling pan will fry the pizza on the bottom so its nice and crispy..so awesomely good! 🙂
yummmmm! I love pizza and really.. this one looks best!!!
Looks good!

The pizza looks incredible, but I was most drawn to the slice of avocado you topped yours with in the last photo. I love both pizza and avocado but had never thought of eating them together.
