Try This: Food and Dishwasher Safe Mug Tutorial!

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial!OMG, you guys! I am beyond excited to share today’s post with you. We’re making food safe AND dishwasher safe mugs. Can I just say—FINALLY! I feel as though my DIY prayers have been answered.

We’re bringing you this post in collab with PaintedByMe. They make food safe permanent paint markers and ceramics. The markers come in a pretty impressive rainbow of colors. You can check out the markers here and the ceramic options here.

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! Step 1: Wipe down your ceramic surface with a paper towel. Make sure it’s fingerprint free!

Step 2: Use the paint markers to create your own designs. If you mess up, just wipe it off and try again. The markers are not permanent until you bake them. And on that note—be careful! Designs can (accidentally) rub off easily until they are baked.

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! Tip: If you are real particular (I can be!), use tape to mask off the area where you want to add text or illustrations. If you are one of those people who don’t love their handwriting, easy—buy some letter stickers you can trace!

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! Tip: If you are doing thicker lines OR more than one color (like my confetti design), you might need multiple layers of marker. If you do, bake between each layer. If you don’t, layer 2 might rub off layer one.

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! Step 3: Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes. To avoid cracking, allow the pieces to heat up and cool in the oven.

Here are five ideas for holiday gift mugs!!!

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! 1. Use a quote from a favorite TV show or movie. This is one of the ultimate gift ideas because you can really customize it to your loved one’s personality! X files, anyone?

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! 2. Have a little cheeky fun! Adding “vodka?” or “whiskey?” to coffee mugs is silly and fun!

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! 3. These coffee jokes are probably my personal favorite. Perfect for the coffee lover in your life (or, you know, a “treat yourself” moment! I kind of want to keep these!).

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! 4. Use joke names, pet names or Instagram handles for fun cursive mugs.

Finally! A 100% food safe AND dishwasher safe homemade mug tutorial! 5. Confetti dots make a super fun, colorful background, and a monogram mug never hurt anyone. Who doesn’t love a good monogram?

Which idea would you guys do? Or would you do something totally different? If you make your own food safe, dishwasher safe and microwave safe mugs, we’d LOVE to see them! Tag them on Instagram using #ABMcrafty. Happy Holiday gift making, you guys!!! xx- Elsie

  • These markers look so fun! Do you think they’re available in stores too, like Michaels? I think I’d like to draw on a mug for my boyfriend for Christmas, but I’m worried it could take a while to receive these markers in the mail if I order online.

  • Awesome, thanks Jacki! There are lots of Jo-Ann shops around here. I’ll go looking for the markers over the weekend 🙂

  • I have tried this project with Sharpie oil-based paint markers, and while they looked good at first, the design eventually rubbed off. We don’t own a dishwasher, so that was just with soap and water. It makes me tempted to try the PaintedByMe markers to see if I get a better result!

  • Haha, I’m glad you included the suggestion for getting letter shapes to trace, because despite the fact that I have decent handwriting, I’m sure I’d do a terrible job on a mug. Love that confetti one at the end!

  • They are definitely the right product for this project. I’ve never heard of a food safe version before, so I’m really excited to use these on a whole bunch of gifts!!

  • But here’s the thing, your magical handwriting makes those mugs look oh-so-much better than any attempt I could ever try would.

  • What a fun idea! Where can i buy these markers to be sent international? I would love to try this out 😀

  • Where did you find your awesome squatty mugs? I love the interesting shape!
    Thanks!

  • I found them at JoAnn! They even created a special end cap of the markers, some stencils and a variety of mugs to try them on…had a 20% off everything coupon for signing up to get their emails, so I bought two colors and two mugs! I hope the directions work well with our oven, which is old and not the best ever, but since I’m not going to be eating the results, it should. Wish me luck!

  • Luuurve this! I have been looking for mugs with specific phrases and couldn’t find them and now I can make my own!!! 🙂

  • With the personalized mugs so popular right now I love that there is now a dishwasher safe paint marker. I am someone who is very particular so I love that the paint isn’t permanent till you cook it. The tip to cook between layers is something that I had not thought of before, but is a great idea so that the design doesn’t get messed up between layers. Thanks for sharing I will have to check these paint markers out!

  • With mug customization so popular right now I am so glad that there is finally a paint marker that is dishwasher safe! I am very particular when I am creating something as a gift and I love that these paint markers are not permanent till the mug has been cooked. Thank you for the tip to cook the design between colors, this is so smart and something I had not thought of before. Thanks for sharing I will have to find some of these markers at my local craft store to make some great gift this Christmas.

    • Hey I love these mugs my question is can you feel the paint out of the mug or does it feel like it was just printed on there and smooth?? Like it just comes like that. If so this is perfect and what I’ve been searching for!!

  • Can you use any mug? Or does it have to be by paintedbyme. I went to joanns and they ran out.

  • Can you let us know if these are food safe on any ceramic ware? We have specific mugs we’d like to paint, but need them to be food safe.

  • I’ve seen other ceramic paints and markers whose manufacturer’s state that they are food safe and non-toxic, and then later in the description, advise that they are not recommended for use on ceramics which come in contact with food. It’s a little confusing / concerning.

Does anyone know if that applies to the “Painted By Me” line as well? I want to decorate the *inside* of a mug which will be used for coffee and tea.

    Thanks for any replies!

  • Are they discontinuing these pens? I tried to find black and was told it was discontinued. Are all of the paints being discontinued?

  • I’ve seen some tea cups with writing at the bottom of the cup. The quote is “You’ve been poisoned” and would be a fun gift for some of my family members and friends. Would these pens work for something like this?
