The other night I was baking a cake for a dinner with my future in-laws and my parents. I had made a chocolate cake and was preparing a butter cream frosting. I love plain vanilla butter cream frosting, but for some reason I just felt like the cake needed something a little extra. I decided to add in a big scoop of cookie butter to the frosting. The results were fantastic! And it got me thinking how a little change like that can make a big difference in easy recipes. Here are three ideas for spicing up your frosting.Cookie butter frosting! It's got the perfect amount of cinnamon. Simply add cookie butter to homemade butter cream frosting. If you don't have a favorite butter cream frosting recipe yet check out these ideas. Nutella frosting! I doubt I'm the only one who regularly has Nutella on hand. π Add a scoop and you'll have a super unique chocolate frosting to spread on cakes or cupcakes.Peanut butter frosting. Just add peanut butter. Easy. Obvious. Duh. This goes well with chocolate cake or you could make peanut butter and jelly cupcakes. Yum!Do you have any favorite frosting mix-ins you'd like to share? What about jams and jellies? Happy baking! xo. Emma

I’ve actually made peanut butter frosting. Amazing on banana cupcakes!
Oh wow, those all look SO good! I’ve added a peanut butter icing/frosting to white choc blondes before which works really well : )
I LOVE cupcakes! My B.F.Fs and I have a blog called the cupcake cousins, and we make cupcakes! link: http://thecupcakecousinsblog.blogspot.com/
The Cookie-butter looks sooooo good!
i’ve never tried cookie butter before, but i usually love anything and everything that involves the word cookie. so it’s worth a shot!
That looks amazing!
I’ve tried it with Nutella before but never actually thought to use peanut butter etc (Doh!)
Will definitely be trying this!

I make peanut butter frosting all the time. It’s my son’s favorite, but I’ve never tried Nutella frosting and I should. We LOVE it!
Never hear of cookie butter. I’m intrigued. I won’t rest until I find some. π

the cookie butter sounds amazing just by itself!
I’ve never heard of anything like that, I’ll have to try it out π
That looks so good! I like to experiment with vegan frostings and icings. Surprisingly, soy yogurt is really sweet and delicious, and is a really versatile ingredient for these kind of things!
http://threeinchstitch.blogspot.com
I told a friend how easy it is to make PB frosting the other day and she was blown away!
Did you use the crunchy kind of cookie butter? Biscoff spread (it’s the same thing, made out of speculoos cookies) makes a crunchy variety, which is actually the best thing that’s ever happened to Earth. If you mixed that into your finished buttercream by hand rather rather than using a mixer or food processor it would be a magical crunchy treat. Also, if you ever find yourself needing to make vegan frosting, Biscoff is vegan too!
I would especially love to have a taste of the cookie butter ones. So simple, but effective. Definitely going to give these a try soon.

Oh wow. I want these pronto.
Nutella love π Can’t wait for the weekend to make some of these π
These pictures are killing me! Carrots + hummus for lunch and now I have to stare at cupcakes with Cookie Butter frosting??? The moment I brought a jar home from Trader Joe’s I knew I was in trouble. It’s delicious with frozen banana + chocolate sauce π
These look great, I put peanut butter frosting on my cupcakes a while back and everybody loved it! Nutella is a good idea, too.
Super Cute!! All great options, I would add caramel icing to the mix.

I love adding dry cake mixes or marshmallow fluff into my frostings. as well as those mentioned in this post π
Emma you’re a genius. Why oh why don’t I put peanut butter in more things!?

Yummy!! I’ve tasted the cookie butter before, it’s addicting. But since I live a gluten free lifestyle, I can’t eat it. And I’m thankful for that! Ha! Those cupcakes look aamaaazing thought π
I’ve never tried cookie butter but it just sounds like heaven in a jar. Your future in laws and parents must love to have a great baker around π

http://chloemoonergo.blogspot.com
Amazing use of cookie butter! I saw it before and figured it would be way too sweet to eat on toast, but that would be great in frosting!
Those cakes look so good and what a great idea…but what is cookie butter? Why am I only just hearing about it and where can I get it?! I must try it! I don’t doubt the Nutella icing would be amazing, but I never have it in the house…mostly because I love it so much I will never stop eating it!
I;m getting hungry out here, so yummy! xx

Ohh, whenever I bake a banana cake I frost it with peanut butter frosting. It’s so darn good! These other ideas sound good too. I’ve never seen Cookie Butter before but am going to look into it because you got me with the word ‘cinnamon’. Unfortunately we can’t do hazelnuts in our home, so no Nutella π
Loulou
Cream cheese frosting is my favourite!
I love you. I love Nutella. I love frosting.
I might be crazy, but I’ve never heard of cookie butter. Now I MUST go get some and make this frosting.
I did this neat post a while ago about how to take a regular cake mix, and add all different things to create 6 different flavours
http://www.lifeisaparty.ca/2012/one-cake-mix-six-ways/
Love your ideas, I think I’d love the peanut best!

Cookie butter frosting! So amazingly delicious!
The cupcakes look yummy and delicious!
Oh my god, speculoos cupcakes ? never though of that! Guess who has 3 jars in the cupboard?
Oh gawd, they look yummy!
I made some Easter cupcakes last year, and made both a Nutella frosting and a caramel frosting. The caramel one was actually a caramel ‘sauce’, but it’s perfect for frosting anything, really! I recently put the recipe on my blog: http://www.midnightcaramel.com/2012/12/midnight-snack-salted-butter-caramel.html
Anyway, your cupcakes look really cute, and I love your recipes!
fun! the other day I made the most sublime chocolate buttercream for my raspberry chocolate cupcakes…perfection.
xx.
YUM! Those mix-ins sound so delicious! I’ve never heard of cookie butter before so I’m definitely going to have to check that out!

Again, another delicious looking post, something worth deviating from the diet for!
You should try a star or rose tip, it makes the frosting come out so pretty and swirly!
Finally someone who knows the speculoos spread!
This cookie butter also exists in any supermarket, under the brand “Biscoff”. This super delicious spread is made from a typical Belgian brown sugar cookie (the famous “Speculoos”) and it is almost as common as Nutella in Europe.
As a European myself, I was super happy to find it here in the US!
But I tried this frosting above a dark chocolate cupcake and speculoos filling… No description possible!
I was a Nutella girl, but lately Speculoos has got the best of me and I just can’t get enough!

(wiping drool of my kitchen table) This makes me want to go bake cupcakes right now.

Lovely cupcakes ladies!
I’m a big fan of peanut butter frosting on chocolate cupcakes – to die for!
I’ve heard all about this cookie butter on the interweb, but it isn’t available in Canada! Any chance of you ladies doing a recipe on how to make your own?
Or I’m going to have to break and order a jar off Amazon π
These are awesome ladies. well done!
Hi Emma, maybe you could tell us how to recreate the cookie butter?
xo
Cookie butter on a cupcake! This is amazing!
My all time favorite is cream cheese frosting, but now I think I’m going to HAVE to add nutella to it!
these looks SO yummy! i think i will use this as an excuse to make cupcakes soon. π
I’ve tried a few combinations of every day foods added to frosting…my favourites were strawberry jam (i think you call it jelly) mixed with buttercream icing, peanut butter and nutella both mixed into chocolate buttercream icing.
Both of these were tasty, but almost a little too sickly and over the top…if that’s possible π
this is AMAZING!!!! Am trying the nutella ones this weekend (we cant get the other toppings here in France π unfortunately).
Let’s hope I can make them as beautiful as yours xxxx

Cookie Butter?! Whoever thought this up needs a medal. We have NOTHING like this in the UK. The only stuff available for us online is just peanut butter with cookie chips in, so not really the same.
I have a book with a recipe for lavender frosting,I’ve not tried it yet but I thought you might be interested because of your recent lavender kick π
Oh my word, what is cookie butter? can i get it in the UK? Sounds AMAZING!
I actually managed to blend and mix in Cinnamon Toast Crunch into the frosting for cupcakes! I’m going to try experimenting with some other cereals to see if I can create something tasty. π
That Cookie Butter is the BEST! Genius idea to add it to frosting
I had never in my life heard about cookie butter! So long diet.
Great post! I wish I could pipe as well as you, as your cupcakes look awesome!
