I've been in search of the perfect at-home chai recipe for years now. I was a little nervous to make this for Friendsgiving, as I still feel like I'm always tweaking the spices. But I think I have finally found the perfect recipe. And I have witnesses! You can always adjust the spice (or sweetness) level to fit your palette.Spiced Chai, makes 2-3 servings
Needed: 2 bags black tea (any kind), 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, 1/2 teaspoon allspice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg and 5 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk.
Fill a tea pot with 5-6 cups water. Add the tea bags and bring to a boil. Stir in the spices and turn the heat down to low. When you are ready to serve add 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk to each cup. Pour in the hot tea and stir to dissolve the milk. Serve with a cinnamon stick! xo. Elsie

This sounds really delicious! Chai is the best, especially with this chilly weather π
How long do you think this mix would last? My MIL’s boyfriend really likes Chai, and it might be nice to make a homemade mix for the holidays…
Yes yes yes! I love chai, but I’m not the biggest fan of buying the tea bags. Oh I’m so excited to try this.
Question though: I tend to stick to the time limit for steeping the tea bags in the hot water (Typically 3-5 minutes for black tea). Do you follow that time limit for this recipe?
need to definitely try this!

Elise- Yes, for this recipe I steeped the tea for about 3 minutes. You like your chai very black then you can steep for a little longer. π
I’m a Chai feind! I may have to give this a go!
I love chai! I’ve been making my own tea combinations for years and this is pretty close to it! Delicious thanks for the inspiration!
This looks wonderful! I can’t wait to give it a try. I also highly recommend adding white pepper to the mix if you like a little extra kick of spice!
Oooh yum! Excited to try this!
I’m so happy you posted this. I’m absolutely in love with Chai. I work in a coffee shop so I’m always working with it, but have always wanted to try making my own.

Hi!! I just want to say I love your blog. I knew about it a few months ago, and from that moment I fell in love with all the things you show in it. IΒ΄m Spanish, but I live in London. I love all Emma’s recipes, Elsie’s pictures and designs and Jeremy’s music. Thank you a lot for all that stuff…
I also add black pepper and star anise. Chai is so delicious!

Great recipe. My mother-in-law can heat the milk in the pot with the tea, but I always get distracted and it ends up boiling over. I have never tried sweetened condensed milk. Thanks for the tip!

Yum, I love chai! Great recipe, looks super easy too which is great – way better than buying the big box of the pre-made stuff. Might have to sneak this into dinner (adding some rum perhaps?)

sounds yummy!
When I ran a Cafe back in my home town, we had a house spice mix that was very similar to this, but instead of brewing it together, we made a huge vat of spice syrup! We would stock the pantry with it and it lasted for weeks!
Loving her nail polish too!
i have some questions
you said 2 tea bags is it the bags that we use for 1 cup?
how do you use cardamom, with hull or without?
and ginger, planed or powder???
thanks for this great recipe!!! will try after answers π

I’ve been making my own Chai for years. My secret is to put all the spices in a blender along with some brown sugar and whip it up so that everything is finely ground and blended well. Then I make my black tea and add almond milk and some of the spices to it. Beyond good… π
It’s great how simple this sounds for such a yummy drink. You’ve inspired me to try some new recipes on my next free day x
Just made this – SO yummy! Really, how can you go wrong with sweetened condensed milk?! Thank you for the recipe.
