Every so often my decorating and DIY sides meet up and give me the urge to take on a home project. I've been shopping for rugs lately to make our house feel cozy and warm, and I thought it would be fun to try my hand at hooking a rug for our place. 1. Supplies: blank latch hook canvas, latch hook, yarn (you can buy pre-cut latch hook yarn, but to save money I cut mine by hand) 2. Fold an edge over one or two times and whipstitch around the edge until secure. Repeat on all for sides to bind the edges of the rug. 3. Push your hook through a square. The hook will need to go under and through. 4. Wrap the yarn around the base of the hook and pull the yarn around the top part of the hook. 4. Begin pulling down on the hook. The small arm will close around the hook and wrap around the yarn. 6-7. Continue pulling down through the hole. 7. Repeat in every square until you have a finished rug! This rug took me several weeks to complete but was a very fun and relaxing project to do while watching movies and sitting by the fire. I'm excited to have such a special piece for our new home! xo. Katie
P.S. As we worked on this and other home projects we couldn't help but think about all the people affected by Hurricane Sandy. One reader, Candice, emailed this week and said she lost her home in the storm. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the storm. If you would like to make a donation to help those affected, you can do so (through the Red Cross) here.

Hello!
I’m writing from Peru.
I loved this project and would like to know how much wool needed to complete the carpet.
A big hug to the distance.

That seems so easy! I would love to give it a try over Winter Break.

Oh I love rug hooking! It’s fun to do, and as you say, very relaxing. And then you get something nice out of your work in the end! Score. I like the striped pattern you went with.

I used to love doing the kits when I was a kid. I need to try this again. Fun fun.

What a great post! I used to make these all the time, and to cut down on time and supplies I would skip a row and not do EVERY box. I do like how yours is extraordinarily fluffy, however and might try that with another rug later.
Sorry, forgot to put this in my other comment, but where did you get those shoes?
Wow! Really great job,.

The rug looks SPECTACULAR!!!! Hmm, took u a few weeks, i think it would take me a few months since when watching to TV I am totally focused on vegging.

I used to do latch hook rugs when I was a kid. I remember making a rug with Eeyore on it. I never actually considered making a usable rug in my home. Great idea.
Beautiful. I used to make latch hook pictures using the kits from Michaels. Hmmm. Now I’m thinking of making a rug for my daughter. I was wondering?
1. How big is your blank latch hook canvas that you used and did you buy it from Michaels?
2. How long were the yarn that you cut to make the rug?
Thanks,
Neene
BTW, I love your blog. So crafty and inspiring.
Definitley going to have to try this out!
omg i’ve been wanted a rug like this for so long, but i never found the color i wanted, thanks for sharing this 🙂
I LOVE this project! I have the same questions what @Neene just posted!
The first thing I noticed in your first photo is…. Your shoes!!!! I want the shoes and also the camera! XD
So want to do this for my bathroom. <3

I tried the old latch-hook from fabric scraps and gave up after four rows. Congrats on finishing it.
Katie, you are very good at putting things together and making things. I really like this idea but I don’t know if I would have the patience to try it 🙂
It’s great that you took a moment to recognize the huge disaster that affected the east coast, but I wish you didn’t ask people to donate to the Red Cross. Both FEMA and the Red Cross have been no where to be found. To have a more direct impact, it would be better to check out the OccupySandy movement which has been much more proactive and organized in all this mess.

Amazing! I’m going to make one in dark purple and brown to put next to my bed so I can bury my feet in the soft yarn every morning when I get up

What a great rug! I remember making one as a kid that took me moooonths because I was so lazy. (It was Hello Kitty!) I’ve always wanted to make another one.
I was going to say this looks terribly time consuming, but I guess if you are used to a project like this, such as knitting, it’s actually a great idea and very fresh and functional! I loved how you did a stripe, it turned out really cute 🙂

This looks amazing! I did latch hook when I was younger but I never had the continued attention span to work on it for more than a few weeks! I would love to do this and do a really cute print!
Looks lovely! I would love to try and make something like this but it looks like it took a lot of time!
What a wonderful idea! It’s so gorgeous to create something truly handmade. Love the colours too! Very inspiring.

How nice would it be to have your self made rug next to your bed or so! 😀 Such a great idea!!!
I can imagine this being a great way to get some stress out of your system, just, being calm, working on a rug 😀
Love, Saar
Love the colours – thanks for sharing!
Wow! That looks so rad!! 😀
I just finished (and blogged about!) one of these, but instead of a few weeks, it actually took me a few years (!!!) to finish it :P. Of course, I didn’t work consistently on it, it was sort of my never-ending project that was always on my summer goals list. But like you said, it’s a very relaxing project to work on, and now that I’m done with it, I think I’m ready for a new one – and your beautiful striped rug is the perfect inspiration! 🙂
I think I might need to give this a go… I wonder how easy it would be to do an animal face for my son’s room!
OMG how cool!!:)
Boy, did this bring back memories for me! “Back in the day”, I learned to make rugs like this using a wooden frame, burlap and rug yarn in a continious piece.
Your rug is a beauty!
(p.s. – I admire your patience in cutting the yarn :)!)
This is so nice, but the colours look like you could just eat it! I must try this when I live alone 🙂
totally inspired. this will give me something to do when I move.
ALSO SHOES. SPILL IT I NEED THEM please!

Hi! What count canvas was used here and how would I match a ball of wool to this? And what size canvas did you use?
amazing!
Love it!
Inspired choice ladies! I haven’t done a latch hook since middle school (a unicorn I believe), but mine were never so mod. Thanks for the inspiration and the trip down memory lane.
This looks an awful lot of hard work! but the satisfaction after making it is incomparable. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Havent latch hooked anything since i was a little girl… love this idea. definitely doing it for my bathroom cause I can’t find a good rug to match!
very beautiful rug!
but even more beautiful shoes, where did you buy them?
What it the base of the rug? where I can get it? I’ve been trying to get one but I don’t know what is that!?
Oh my gosh… These are so fun and easy!! I did this in the fourth or fifth grade! (Granted, the pattern was painted onto the canvas, but stripes would be pretty easy, as indicated in your tutorial!!)
Thanks for sharing!
love the shoes!! where are they from?
The rug is great but where are those delightful shoes from please?
Susannah, the shoes are Swedish Hasbeens!
xoxo

i love your shoes! where did you get them?
wow now thats PASSION to do an entire rug! great job
About a year ago, someone in one of the online craft supply groups had a bag full of latch hook rug yarn bundled in individual colors at a very cheap price. I had to jump on it don’t ya know! haha I had made a few small “wall rugs” while in high school but the yard brought back fun memories. So, I’ll be buying some canvas soon and see what I can come up with. Thanks for reminding me of what I have!
I have been latch hooking for years.. been trying to figure what to do with all the ( many ) left over pieces of yarn… thank you for giving me this idea!!!!!!!
I saw your rug and instructions on pinterest and your website. The only thing you didn’t mention was how big is your rug? I know you can make different sizes, but yours seemed to be a good size.
Hey, I was wondering how well this rug is holding up and how you wash it? I’m thinking of making one for a bathroom
