Every so often my decorating and DIY sides meet up and give me the urge to take on a home project. I've been shopping for rugs lately to make our house feel cozy and warm, and I thought it would be fun to try my hand at hooking a rug for our place. 
1. Supplies: blank latch hook canvas, latch hook, yarn (you can buy pre-cut latch hook yarn, but to save money I cut mine by hand) 2. Fold an edge over one or two times and whipstitch around the edge until secure. Repeat on all for sides to bind the edges of the rug. 3. Push your hook through a square. The hook will need to go under and through. 4. Wrap the yarn around the base of the hook and pull the yarn around the top part of the hook. 4. Begin pulling down on the hook. The small arm will close around the hook and wrap around the yarn. 6-7. Continue pulling down through the hole. 7. Repeat in every square until you have a finished rug! 
This rug took me several weeks to complete but was a very fun and relaxing project to do while watching movies and sitting by the fire. I'm excited to have such a special piece for our new home! xo. Katie

What a great post! I used to make these all the time, and to cut down on time and supplies I would skip a row and not do EVERY box. I do like how yours is extraordinarily fluffy, however and might try that with another rug later.

I used to do latch hook rugs when I was a kid. I remember making a rug with Eeyore on it. I never actually considered making a usable rug in my home. Great idea.

It’s great that you took a moment to recognize the huge disaster that affected the east coast, but I wish you didn’t ask people to donate to the Red Cross. Both FEMA and the Red Cross have been no where to be found. To have a more direct impact, it would be better to check out the OccupySandy movement which has been much more proactive and organized in all this mess.

What a great rug! I remember making one as a kid that took me moooonths because I was so lazy. (It was Hello Kitty!) I’ve always wanted to make another one.
I was going to say this looks terribly time consuming, but I guess if you are used to a project like this, such as knitting, it’s actually a great idea and very fresh and functional! I loved how you did a stripe, it turned out really cute 🙂

I just finished (and blogged about!) one of these, but instead of a few weeks, it actually took me a few years (!!!) to finish it :P. Of course, I didn’t work consistently on it, it was sort of my never-ending project that was always on my summer goals list. But like you said, it’s a very relaxing project to work on, and now that I’m done with it, I think I’m ready for a new one – and your beautiful striped rug is the perfect inspiration! 🙂
I think I might need to give this a go… I wonder how easy it would be to do an animal face for my son’s room!

Boy, did this bring back memories for me! “Back in the day”, I learned to make rugs like this using a wooden frame, burlap and rug yarn in a continious piece.

Oh my gosh… These are so fun and easy!! I did this in the fourth or fifth grade! (Granted, the pattern was painted onto the canvas, but stripes would be pretty easy, as indicated in your tutorial!!)

About a year ago, someone in one of the online craft supply groups had a bag full of latch hook rug yarn bundled in individual colors at a very cheap price. I had to jump on it don’t ya know! haha I had made a few small “wall rugs” while in high school but the yard brought back fun memories. So, I’ll be buying some canvas soon and see what I can come up with. Thanks for reminding me of what I have!
