As you know, I have a deep love for white wine spritzers. And I don't want to be a fair-weather friend, but white wine spritzers seem so summertime to me. Where Elsie and I live, it's fall (in case you haven't heard us mention this yet). And yet it's not quite mulled wine weather. So what's a girl to do? Behold friends: cranberry red wine spritzers.
Cranberry Red Wine Spritzers, makes 3-4 servings
Needed: 1 bottle of red wine, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon (or a few cinnamon sticks—I was out) 1 cup chopped cranberries and club soda to serve.
Chop cranberries in half. Then fill to a cup. You don't need them to be finely chopped. In a small pot, combine the wine, sugar, cinnamon (sticks) and cranberries. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve the sugar. Reduce heat to a simmer and allow to cook for 12-15 minutes until wine has slightly reduced (if youre wine reduces much faster turn the heat down or remove from heat entirely). Allow wine to cool and remove cranberry pieces. Then chill in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, fill a glass with half wine and half club soda.
For the cranberry garnish simply skewer cranberries onto a small wooden stick (mine are kabob sticks). Rinse with water and generously sprinkle with sugar. Then freeze for an hour or overnight so the sugar adheres to the cranberries.
I really liked this as a winter replacement for white wine spritzers. This cranberry red wine version felt a little bit more fancy, and the addition of cinnamon made it feel festive too. 🙂 xo. Emma

This looks refreshing and tasty. Plus, filled with anti-oxidants. I love your happy hour posts.
Yum! Makes me wish fresh cranberries were available here in Australia just to make those adorable swizzle sticks. Frozen will have to do.
Thanks for another great recipe.

This kinda makes me think of a special drink of Scandinavian called Glögi (in Finnish) and it is usually mixed with red wine. Uhmm I think your recipe would be pretty much tasty like that. Must try 🙂

Such a great way to incorporate cranberry into a seasonally appropriate drink! Much better than the typical “cranberry and vodka” combo.

Sounds delicious, but wouldn’t boiling it evaporate most of the alcohol?
Perfect for fall in Georgia, I’m making this tonight!
wow…if I’m honest, the idea of sparkling red wine freaks me out slightly but you’ve certainly intrigued me!
Sounds great! It is a bit sad that all of the alcohol in the red wine will be gone by the time you’re done boiling!
Mmmmm.. nice!

This looks delicious! But doesn’t the alcohol evaporate when you boil the wine? Nothing wrong with a non-alcoholic drink, but what to do to keep the alcohol in the drink?
Wouldn’t this cook off the alcohol & isn’t red wine supposed to be consumed at room temperature?
Holy cow, this looks really delicious. And so pretty! 🙂

This looks delicious!
Natalie- It will reduce the amount of alcohol. It could reduce a lot if you boil it for a long period. Anytime you cook (or in this case, heat) alcohol (wine or liquors) it will reduce the alcohol content some, just like how water will begin to evaporate when heated too. That being said this is still an alcoholic beverage and should still be served and drank responsibly.
hmm, this sounds very nice!
thanks for sharing.

A stupid question, what is club soda?
oh boy do these sound delightful. SO SO going to make one (or four) of these this weekend. 🙂

This looks so tasty! And appropriate for fall too! Do you think it would be possible to substitute the cranberries with strawberries or another type of fruit for those who don’t like cranberry?
This looks so good! What kind of red wine did you use for this?
YUM! You guys might drive me to drink with all your fall drink posts (in a totally good way). 🙂

Brilliant idea. I love mulled wine, but can’t drink more than one or two glasses without feeling pretty full. This looks way more drinkable.
This sounds so yummy! And it is so fall.
