It's the start of a new season and I have a fun challenge for you! Way back in 2010 I wrote about my 4 Simple Goals. It was fun and helped me to stay inspired during the busiest season of the year. This morning Jeremy and I decided to give ourselves this challenge again! We want to invite you to play along too. Here are the "rules"-
1. Choose simple goals that will make your life richer and happier on a daily basis. Choose things you may not otherwise get done, but that are not difficult to accomplish.
2. Do not choose result oriented goals, choose activity oriented goals. for example…. instead of "lose 10 pounds", choose something like "eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day". Get what I'm saying? Positive actions instead of just the end result!
3. Choose goals that are personal that you believe will truly make your life richer just by doing them! They can be daily, weekly or one time experiences.
4. Choose a reward for each goal as it is accomplished! It can be a small or large reward- it's up to you.
5. Blog about your goals, each one as you achieve it and a big post when they are all finished before the new year! I'll be doing this too! Link back to this post if you want to and leave us links to your goal blogs in the comments of this (or any) post for a chance to be featured on ABM before the new year. We will be sharing some of our favorite reader goals with links to your blogs! *NOTE: Please feel free to use the image above on your own blogs if you like!
Do you think this is something that could enrich your life? Are you excited? I hope so.
Here are my goals…
1. Decorate with patience. This is an important goal for me. I am a list maker and I love the feeling of starting and finishing a project in one day. With my new home, I am trying to be very purposeful about decorating with patience. Instead of buying the first thing I see, or choosing things impulsively I am a trying to spend quality time on the whole process. I want to enjoy this season and I think that this goal will help me to focus less on accomplishing and more on enjoying. 2. Paint something. I haven't finished a painting in a few years. I've started a bunch, but I never finish. I blame this in part on not having a devoted painting space. In two weeks this excuse will be gone and I'll be setting up my new space after we move. I really want to start and finish a painting just to kick start the creative process and get back into a groove! 3. Eat green food every day. Over the summer Jeremy and I did Green Smoothies Diet. It was awesome. We drank green smoothies each day and made salads and other (mostly green) foods. We loved the challenge and want to stay in the habit of drinking green smoothies and eating at least one salad each day. I'm excited about trying to find ways to incorporate autumn vegetables into our salads. 4. Practice photography. As with all hobbies, it's easy to get in a rut. I love photography and this season I want to challenge myself to try new things and grow! I will make a short list (maybe 5-10) of styles and techniques to try. I think this will be a fun way to spice up my favorite hobby. For my rewards I am making an Etsy wishlist… just little things that I probably wouldn't treat myself to otherwise. Although, I kinda feel like the larger reward is the creative spirit that these goals will nurture. 🙂
Are you guys up for the challenge? I can't wait to read about your 4 Simple Goals! xoxo, elsie

this is great!! can’t wait to get started 🙂
simple goals always seem easier to achieve and only lead you closer to a bigger goal
I am so IN!!!!!! I already have a list started so I guess it’s time to share. I will try and have it up and linked by next week! Wheeeee!
great and helpful post ! love it !

I love this, what a great motivator. I find new years resolutions tend to be too..large so seem doable, and thus inevitably get cast aside, but this, this I think I could stick with!
I’ll certainly be linking back when I’ve posted my 4 🙂

Very inspiring! I like your idea of making goals~ I am soon to make the birthday list 29 things to do before 30 idea of yours- I haev done it the last three years and it’s been really special to see what I have accomplished 🙂 thank you as always for the inspiration

What a great idea!! I love the idea of altering the goal to be something that is less “result” oriented and more full of action!

Oh my gosh what a fantastic idea. I could think of about a million goals, but I like the “not using an end result” idea quite a lot.
Thanks for the inspiration ladies!

YES! This is an awesome challenge! I know my first one will be to play a little every day. I get too busy and forget to enjoy life. I’ll be adding links as I go!

Setting goals is always a very powerful thing to do. I usually set mines at the beginning of the year and then regularly check upon them.
As far as 2012 is concerned I have to say I’ve been very good at it sticked to the plan religiously…still there are four more months to go…
Such a great idea! 4 simple goals instead of huge unachievable lists! I think I’ll have to come up with 4 and blog about them. Thank you for the inspiration!
Ah, I love the idea of activity rather than goal orientated. I find myself doing rather bland ‘to do’ lists which consist of things like: pay bills, mark year 8 books (I teach) etc- hardly things to nourish the soul! I’m now going to think of five September goals and blog about them. I’ll link back to you.Rx

I always make monthly goals. This process can be discouraging if I don’t succeed so I really love the positive spin you put on goal making :).
Ooh thanks for sharing! I definitely want to come up with my own.

This sounds like a fun challenge. And I love that it’s “simple” goals. I think we are all guilty of always giving ourselves really big tasks and then getting overwhelmed by it. I think I’m going to take on this challenge. Now I just have to take a minute, organize my thought and write down my 4 simple goals.
I love the simplicity of your goals!! Makes them so do-able, yet they are so significant!
Great goals! I’ll have to think about some for myself.

Done! As promised, I’ve now blogged my own : )
http://sandersonsmithstory.blogspot.co.uk/
Your 4th goal is very similar to one of my own. Ever since I’ve been working full-time and going to school my hobbies have fallen by the wayside and it definitely took a toll of my well-being. My goal for the next year is to develop at least one creative hobby. Now I need to decide on one! =)
I always love to make lists/goals like this! It gives such a satisfied feeling when you accomplish something.

just finished my goals! thanks for this idea, I feel really good about the next 4 months! http://thebreadandbutterflyblog.blogspot.com/2012/09/4-simple-goals-before-2013.html
1. Eat chocolate every day
2. Save less, shop more
3. Carrot cake counts as a vegetable

Great idea, I’m so in! There is plenty things I would like to change (at least a little).
I don’t have a blog to keep inform everyone, but simple diary will do the work, I’m sure.
Well, good luck with your goals! 🙂
What a wonderful idea, “decorate with patience” really rings with me as hubs and I just bought a new home too. I’ve been so excited about decorating our first home that I keep forgetting the fun in finding the perfect pieces.
Love your reward idea! I might have to do the same. I’m working on a 24 before 25 list right now, and I can think of a couple Etsy lusts I’d love to be rewarded with 🙂
You all are so motivating!! I am SO in!!

I love this! And I’m totally in. My four simple goals would be:
1. Take English classes and do the FCE exam
2. Eat more fruit and go for a walk everyday
3. Enjoy high-school until graduation
4. Plan the most perfect future possible ♥
I tell you this every single time you post something, and I won’t stop doing it: you are SO inspiring! 🙂
a nice thing to think about while having coffee.
thanks girls! you always inspire me =)

Such a smart way to approach goals. I always try to do something similar with my New Years resolutions, but maybe it’s time to make goals year-round!

4 goals should be doable. I have to think a bit about my choices.
If you’re interested I just posted a DIY for berry vinegars (blueberry and raspberry) and a homemade salad dressing to make with them. Could help with your goal of eating more green foods!

Hey Elsie, I hopped right on the bandwagon and am so excited. : ) Its so much easier to accomplish things when you know there are a ton of other people striving for great things too. This was such a fun list to do and I’m so motivated to make it happen. Time to go put those walking shoes on. : )

Love this idea! I’m trying to be very goal/reward orientated at the moment. But I always seem to loose my way at least once a week! 🙁 Maybe I’ll be more driven if I challenge myself to join in here!
I love the idea sooo much! Just recently I discovered your blog and I’m loving it♥♥ :). So bad that I’ll be starting school next week, so I don’t have enough time to make a new blog and post my 4 simple goals, but I can do the challenge!!
Thanks for the inspiration. I’ve just posted my goals in both danish and english. I hope I can spread the good message.
http://noerreliv.blogspot.dk/2012/09/4-simple-goals.html
i made some challenges for myself too. But it was a LONG list and i’m happy to do just what i like with it… one of them was “exercise every day” – didn’t do that, but i’m going to start this one again. i simply must!
Eat more healthy food is always on my list, at least since two year nows. i bought a new cookbook “Leon” from an UK healthy fast food chain. Its wonderful! This weekend i’m trying two different recipes from that book and i hope to try them all!
i also want to cut down the sugar i’m eating. So tomorrow i’ll try to make an applepie without sugar! i’m really excited about that. (i actually thing ‘being healthy’ i just one item and eating healthy food and exercise every day is part of that first main goal).
ok so besides these goals i wanted to begin to understand more about photography. i’ve a dslr but was only making pictures in auto. So i started a three months course and learned about the basics. i followed the second three months course too and found it hilarious, the people who were taking the course with me were just amazingly funny and we had the best time.
But after the course i began to read books about photography and learned SO much more than i learned on the course. i also bought myself lensbabies which made me feel i was actually photographing instead of the camera doing the thing for me, you know?
Anyways, i’m loving it
The third main goal was to read more books. Besides the photography books i wasn’t reading that very much but in my vacation i managed to read four books and i’m on the fifth one now. Now i’m hoping i can keep up with reading one book a week.
Further more i’ve big/small goals like, decorating my living room, keeping it clean, having date night outs, having fun dates with my friends, enjoying company, making small talk with strangers, try to make a new friend, do more fun things with my kids, dress nicely even if you stay home. etc 🙂
Oh I think this is a wonderful idea !! I will definitely think about goals to achieve in 2013. 😀 I really like your goals too!
Blogging about a journey to accomplish something you want for yourself also seems like a great idea. I can imagine it’s nice to put in words how easy or how hard it actually is set your goals and actually live up to them! 😀
Thank you so much for this lovely idea!!
Love, Saar
me encanta la idea!!!!!
So excited you’re doing this again. I made my four goals and wrote about them here: http://www.findingjoyinallthings.com/2/post/2012/09/four-simple-goals-before-2013.html. The best part is going to be coming up with my rewards!
Dear Elsie
I’m a “long time listener, first time caller”. A goal setter by nature, it’s fallen by the wayside as the demands of family, work and our kids fashion label grow. I’d like to snatch some of it back, you’ve had me thinking all day on this Sydney spring Saturday. Here are my 4… http://quinceclothing.blogspot.com.au/#!/2012/09/4-simple-goals-before-2013.html
love it! http://www.moustachesblog.blogspot.com
Ironically, #3 and #4 of your goals are also my goals. My mom has me start drinking green smoothies last year and I love it. I’ve been a little slack but I want to
Get back into doing it. I gave been eating brocolli everyday so I guess that’s a start. 🙂

I love this idea – thanks for helping me put some focus on the fun things in life and not just on the serious goals.

I love the green food every day goal, I’ve been trying to do that too 🙂
What a fantastic Idear! I am definitely going to post about this – main reason being that the idea of setting goals scares me a little bit (fear of failure) and it’s sooo good to do things we are afraid of – that is how we GROW 🙂
This is an awesome idea – I am definitely going to post about this tomorrow 🙂

You can check them out here: http://witandspice.blogspot.com/p/goals.html
I have a few more than four and some of them are more specific, but I’ve already noticed a difference! Just having them written down helps. I love the idea of doing a follow-up post at the end of the year. I’m excited to check back and see how others have accomplished their simple goals.
I’ve posted my goals! I feel so motivated!

2. Write a novell
3. Run 2 times a week
4. Finish a book in english (I’m from Denmark…)
Simple advice is always the best. I needed to read this as I feel overwhelmed with my world and life and want to be more productive, but this really encouraged me to take everythign one step at a time!

I love how the blogging community can be such a great inspiration and motivational source! Will try to set four simple goals. Great idea!
I’ve been a follower of your blog for years but rarely comment. I just wanted to say, I LOVE this blog still after years of reading. Even as I’ve changed over the years this blog still is a good fit for me! I just wanted to comment on this post and your newest Everyday Elsie post about packing. I love that you see your style so clearly and stick to it. I’m in the process of trying to find mine! We’ve been in our first home for a year now & I feel like I’m finally settled enough where I want to start making it our own. I feel like I just threw up whatever wall art and decor we had from our college days and I don’t like it! Reading your posts about your new home (congrats btw!) is perfect timing for me bc I feel like I’m ready for the same thing! Also, I love that you posted this 4 goals challenge again. I tried doing it back in 2010…and failed. I’m horrible at sticking to goals. But I feel like I’m at a more organized phase of my life and made 4 new ones today! So far so good! I admit I totally copied your “decorate with patience” because I needed that perspective right now as I try to decorate our home. Thanks so much for being a continual inspiration! Happy nesting in your new home! 🙂
I read your article this morning and immediately made my list. I’m ready to get started!
http://www.thissweetcraziness.blogspot.com/2012/09/4-simple-goals-before-2013.html
End of the year goals are so much more appealing to me than beginning of the year goals. Having a closer end date makes them seem so much more real. And it makes me feel less lazy about putting them off “for later” and then never actually completing them at all. I already had a really big goal that I’ve been trying to finish by the end of the year, so this post totally hit home for me.
My goals are up on my blog here:

GREAT goals! I am a goal-writer too. It’s a way for me to check to hold myself accountable! It’s great when I can check them off!

This is such a lovely post and such a lovely idea.
Often goals are always to fix something negative in peoples life, so fair to say I will be adopting your technique of goal setting!
I’m setting this as one of my blog posts this week, I finished most of my 2012 goals so I need some serious fall goals to kick start this new season!
Yey! Another goals post!! I always have little goals but I never really get around to blogging about them. Not this time though! I read this post and logged straight into my blogger dashboard =D I’ve used your picture but have included two links to this post. Not to mention the ABM feature I did on my blog the other day 🙂 Check it out at cupcakecrazykatie.blogspot.com.

This is so great! Good time of year to make some goals 🙂
Just posted mine:
http://heidi-and-seek.blogspot.ca/2012/09/goals.html
I love making the goals activity oriented. So much more positive because its about the steps that get you to the end result and that way if you fall short it isn’t such a big deal! Every day is a chance to meet the goal.
This is great! I love setting a few obtainable goals at a time. Here are mine…
http://everythingsboring.blogspot.com/2012/09/4-simple-goals-before-2013.html

Hi! I just love your blog and I read it every day! My goals are now posted on my blog. I’m from Sweden so you might not be able to read it, but here is the link: http://lattfixat.blogspot.se/
Hi Emma & Elsie,
I love this post!! How inspiring ♥ On the day i read this post, i had friends coming over for dinner and we talked all night on 4 simple goals, things that make you happy and inspire you.
So we have joined with our Dutch blog, Studio Jopie (we have a google translate bar, not perfect) And we hope that other people will join to. Some of the goals of Kim and i (we make Studio Jopie together) are draw a recipe and place this on the blog, always carry my analoge camera with me and spend more time on books and magazines that inspire us. If you would like to see more, please go to http://studio-jopie.blogspot.nl/2012/09/4-goals-with-beautiful-mess.html
And thanks again for inspiring us and keep up the great work!
Best regards xx from Holland,
Kim and Suzanne from Studio Jopie
After reading this post I realized that it would be a great way to get some of my 2012 resolutions done. I’ve linked back to this post and will definitely be taking part in this challenge.

This is perfect for me, I keep writing long lists and feeling bad when I can’t get through everything. I love the ‘action’ oriented focus as well, it’s much more encouraging. Here are my 4 simple goals:

Thanks for the healthy (non-stressful) goal motivation!

This is such a great idea! I love it. Below is the link to my blog and my goals. Fingers Crossed
http://www.jellybeanandus.blogspot.com/2012/09/with-september-brings-goals.html
I think goals are a great thing to have. But I find when I make them I become hyper-focused on the end result and not the journey you take to get there. So making my goals more activity oriented is something I can totally dig and look forward to doing!
Alright, I thought over it for a few days and here is what I came up with: http://www.fromtheguestroom.com/2012/09/4-simple-goals-before-2013.html
Such a fun idea! It was almost therapeutic thinking up things that I would love to incorporate into my life before 2013!
Have an awesome day Elsie & Emma! -mk
I love this idea! I’ve been informally forming goals for the fall these past few weeks, but I really like the idea of writing them out, making a plan, and rewarding myself! Maybe now my goals won’t just fizzle out after a few weeks! Thanks, Elsie!
Thanks for the inspirational post, Elsie! I just posted my own goals for the year. Hope you can check them out.
