You've probably noticed my current ice cream obsession. Yeah. And it's got me thinking about, like, other kinds of ice cream. For example, one time our friend Wess made my sister this really amazing vegan/raw ice cream. I also saw that recently Danielle posted about her favorite homemade vegan soft serve. And so I had to give this a try.The basic recipe calls for frozen, blended bananas. Once blended they become creamy and delicious like soft serve ice cream. Depending on what you add in to flavor these you could create raw or vegan versions very easily. I decided to try out a few different variations.Chocolate Non Dairy Ice Cream, makes one serving.
Needed: 2-3 bananas, 1/4 cup water, 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (dutch processed preferred) and 2 tablespoons brown sugar.
Peel and chop up bananas and freeze in a zip lock bag overnight. Then blend in a food processor or blender with the water until creamy. You may need to let the bananas soften before blending. Then add in the cocoa and sugar and blend until combined. I topped mine with a few bits of toffee.Banana Nut Non Dairy Ice Cream, makes one serving.
Needed: 2-3 bananas, 1/4 cup water, 1-2 tablespoons honey and 1/4 cup chopped walnuts.
Peel and chop up bananas and freeze in a zip lock bag overnight. Then blend in a food processor or blender with the water until creamy. You may need to let the bananas soften before blending. Stir in the honey and nuts.Vanilla Non Dairy Ice Cream, makes one serving.
Needed: 2-3 bananas, 1/4 cup water, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2-3 tablespoons sugar.
Peel and chop up bananas and freeze in a zip lock bag overnight. Then blend in a food processor or blender with the water until creamy. You may need to let the bananas soften before blending. Stir in the vanilla extract and sugar. I topped mine with some chocolate syrup.Have fun making up your own flavors! xo. Emma

Yum! I’m mostly vegan- so love this! Maybe I’ll make some this weekend. π
My dad has done this before! It tastes so good! He put frozen blueberries in it and it tasted awesome π
This is perfect for my lactose intolerant sister and mom! Check out my blog: http://thechicstreetblog.blogspot.com/
so excited to try this! I put bananas in my freezer just last week for this purpose.
Ahhh this looks so good!

How much banana flavor does it have? Dairy free and hate bananas so I miss out on some delicious smoothie – and I guess ice cream – recipes!
Hi Emma! thanks for sharing a vegan recipe!! π
Wow this is amazing. I never knew you could make ice cream out of bananas! I’ll have to try this with my mom because she just started this non processed diet and having a hard time getting sweets in! Great post!
looks delicious.. yummy.. π

Love this idea!! Yay, can’t wait to try it.
I’ve been making this (lactose intolerant borderlining on a dairy allergy these days). I mixed in coconut extract & pineapple & topped with shredded candied coconut. I wound up tossing in some cashews as well. Sooo tasty. Like a pina collada ice cream.
I love making banana soft serve, and i’ve recently discovered the machine called yonanas. If you have the time and you really like soft serve made from fruit I suggest taking the time to check it out. It’s way easier to use than a blender, much easier to clean as well and you just use all sorts of frozen fruit to make soft serve you can even add chocolate in as well!
Banana whips! π
They look delicious! So lovely to share recipes that cover all dietary requirements!
This recipe looks so amazing! I love it. I cant wait to try it. The banana nut one looks so tasty.

Hmm, this is something I’m going to have to try soon… possibly this weekend. Looks good. Thanks for sharing.
This sounds really great! I’m lactose-intolerant, so I’m always looking for delicious, dairy-free recipes. I usually end up taking a Lactaid pill and braving the dairy – that’s how much I love milk, cream and cheese – but I wouldn’t have to with this. Thanks for sharing! – Alison { aliology.com }
I make ice cream this way for my kids. They literally did not know that ice cream was any different than frozen bananas until they were 3 π Unfortunately for some reason I am allerfic to milk and bananas… go figure. Great post!!

I’m making myself this all the time…it’s the best thing in the world!

Love this idea! I’m vegetarian and recently completed a vegan 30 days challenge and during that time tried soy ice cream and wasn’t a fan this seems like a better alternative for the next time I do it and so much healthier than sugar liaised sorbets!
Thanks for the amazing recipe π

Can’t believe you write about this now… I just put a few bananas in the freezer yesterday to try this! Now I have a few more ideas on flavours =)

I’ve known about the banana ice cream thing for a while and I actually wanted to try it today, but I forgot to put bananas in the freezer. My favourite way to make vegan ice cream is with coconut cream.
This is cool but…wouldn’t it just taste like bananas??
-Lindsey
This looks so good! I’ve seen this kind of “ice cream” on other blogs, and I’ve wanted to try this for a long time! Thanks for the reminder.
These look fantastic! We are on a diet at the moment so these are ideal….I’ve just frozen some bananas too as they were too ripe so I may even make tonight!
Appetizing and delicious!Ice cream is perfect dessert!

Thanks so much for this recipe, Emma! I usually steer away from ice-cream as I can’t tolearate dairy so this is great. It’s a bonus that it’s not too complicated too!!
I love frozen bananas…for me nothing can top coating bananas with chocolate and freezing on a lolly stick!
Yummm, that looks yummy!!!! And I am a vegetarian too! Yay! π Thanks Emma π
I have tried bananas and cocoa before, but I’m excited for new flavors. Thanks for posting the recipes!
This is so perfect for me. I have a 2 month old who gets a tummy ache whenever i have dairy so I’ve been a non dairy gal lately and miss my ice cream. I’ll have to try these!

you can also make great vegan ice-cream by using avocados as a basis. they are very fat, that’s good for the taste, and when combined with other ingredients you don’t necessarily taste the avocado itself.
Mm… looks amazing. π
And girls, I wrote an article about you and your great blog. π
Check this out π http://thelisbeth.blogspot.cz/2012/08/oblibene-blogy-poprve.html but, you must translate it in any compiler, because it’s in Czech language. π xo. Tyna
When i see those photos i say, i must start cooking again!

Oh! I am going to try this! I love soft serve ice cream, but have a bit of a milk allergy, so I don’t get it very often. π The vanilla is especially calling my name–going to pick up some bananas today and give it a try!
I’ll directly try it.

My favorite treat! How come the world did not know about this until like last year? Love it on its own with a dash of cinnamon and almond milk. So good!
these look AMAZING! who would have thought they’re actually quite healthy. Definitely on my list of things to make. Thank you, Emma.

YAAAAYYYYY!! Being lactose intolerant sucks in this weather! this post makes non-dairy ice cream look so easy, i can’t believe i haven’t looked into it before π
I’ve tried this with chocolate before, but not with other flavors! I’m lactose intolerant, so homemade non-dairy ice cream is a great find, especially because the usual grocery store offerings aren’t so great.
Oh my oh my this looks delicious!
You need to try choco-coconut milk ice cream!
2 cans coconut milk
1/2 cup honey (or agave if you’re really not into animal by-products)
2/3 cup cocoa
cinnamon to taste
mix it all up, chill it, then throw it in the ice cream maker. If you add the right amount of cinnamon, it tastes like those delicious Wendy’s Frosties from your childhood!
hm. will have to try before the summer ends!

What a cool idea! These look awesome and I’m going to try making them soon!
Nice idea. They look really delicious.
Take a look at this blog:

bananas- the great alternative. One of my sons is allergic to both dairy and soy. I feel so guilty when I pull out ice cream for the rest of the family but have to find something else for him. This is a nice compromise π
Looks so delish! π We better have indulge in these creamy goodness before summer ends! π

Another super-declicious shake(though, it can get pretty creamy) is frozen bananas, chocolate soy milk and peanut butter. I make these for breakfast all the time.
I need to make one for myself now! I can’t imagine a world without ice-cream!

I’m not a vegan, but my mum is, I think she would like to try this. I would even try this because it looks so yummy.

Thank you! My 6 month old is intollerant to cow’s milk, which means I can’t eat it in anything. After 6 months, I’m really starting to crave ice cream. This came at a perfect time!
This is perfect – my fiance and I love ice cream but he’s lactose intolerant, so he can only have it under certain circumstances.
I’m going to have to pick up some bananas on my next grocery trip!
I love this ! You two always post such magnificent food ideas but a lot of it is dairy or egg heavy. Glad to see something I can eat instead of just drooling over π
i saw danielle’s post, too. not crazy about bananas, but find it makes a great base for everything. for my other non-banana lovers, try using slightly under-ripe bananas…they’re less banana-y. when you mix in other things, you can’t taste them at all.
Yummy! IΒ΄ll try it!
do you think you could substitute the water for soy milk or almond milk for a creamier, milker texture?
My BFF can’t have milk, so I’ll have to show this to her! Cool recipe!
I see another person mentioned yonanas, and I just wanted to pipe up that my mom has that machine and LOVES it. I’m not as huge a fan, since I don’t love bananas, and though you can use other fruits, without the banana, you don’t get that nice creamy texture. But it’s definitely worth checking out.
I’m loving your vegan posts. My 20 mo old is dairy allergic so I love finding new yummy things I can offer him. xoKatie
I’ve done this before and it turns out so tasty!

I am so so excited about this! I am lactose intolerant and I miss icecream! Perfect!

I was on a banana “ice cream” kick for a while. If you let the bananas melt a little more and keep blending, they get a *little* like whipped cream and taste so good dolloped in a cup of chilled mint chocolate milk.
Thanks for the tips on how to mix it up. I’ve been making banana ice cream for awhile and love it. Some of the things I love to add to mine are using Coconut Milk (you could probably also use Almond Milk or Coconut Water) instead of plain water and adding in a teaspoon of peanut butter or nutella on occasion. I’ve also done the same thing with strawberries and Coconut Milk… Delish!
I’ll definitely have a go at this. It seems like a low fat version of ice-cream that even dieters can have.

Wow, I’ll have to try this. They all look so delicious! I can’t believe that’s banana!
Elsie and Emma–I recently saw a coconut milk-based frozen non-dairy treat in a grocery store. I bought a chocolate-flavored one and it was delish.
Maybe that could be your next experiment in homemade frozen treats?
My mom did this recently, although she added avocados, which made the “ice cream” far thicker and closer to the texture of dairy ice cream. I was expecting the avocados to make it taste super weird, but it was honestly quite delightful π
Maybe instead of water you could to almond milk?
Hi Emma! These look delicious, I’ll have to try them. I’m already thinking about a new flavour with avocado. xoxo.
Good sharing, welcome to joy fax server: http://www.joyfax.com
I tried this tonight and made a chocolate flavor. It tasted great!

Nice Non Dairy Ice Cream recipe but cure your health
Yum! My roommate and I made this before, but being deprived college students in a dorm we had no blender/food processor so we just mashed the bananas as well as we could with our spoons, hahaha. Good times. And a good way to use over-ripe bananas.
Yummmmm !!! Thank you for those recipes !!
delish, I have been making some scrumptious frozen yoghurt. You can find it here…

we tried it and loved it! it was our first diy post on our blog π
I am definitely going to have to try this – I am lactose intolerant and icecream is one of the things I really miss. But this looks really yummy!
Oh this actually looks amazing, especially for a lactoseintolerant like myself. Will need to try it asap!!x
I made the chocolate flavor for my fiance (he’s lactose intolerant) and we both LOVED it! Thanks for sharing π

I have chron’s disease, so this is how I get my ice cream fix π I can’t eat sugar either, so I just do bananas, blueberries, and dark cocoa powder, and it’s STILL sweet, creamy, and delicious!
I made the chocolate version of these ice creams at the weekend, and it was DELICIOUS! As one of those allergic to milk type folks it’s nice to expand the range of puddings I can have, seriously there are only so many fruit salads a girl can eat. (Fruit salad is NOT a pudding in my opinion.)
Love this! i can’t have too much dairy so this is perfect for me! π

oh yum yum yum, this recipe sounds delicious!
i’ve always wanted to try making ice cream, but i don’t own an ice cream maker..
so this sounds perfect! thanks for sharing.

Delicious! I am a big fan of having mango or pineapple pureed and frozen, I never called it ice cream but it’s basically the same idea as this and so yummy! I’m also a huge fan of coconut ice cream but I don’t know how to make it, I just buy the one from So Delicious.
I make this with Nutella – sooo yummy!
Thanks for sharing, I’m always looking for new recipes that find creative ways to replace traditional ingredients used for ice cream. I show some of these on my blog
