After seeing several projects floating around on Pinterest I decided to try the sharpie method for customizing a pair of his + her mugs. The directions listed on Pinterest kinda seemed too easy to be true… so I did a little testing. I even tried running them through the dishwasher and here’s what I found out…
Here’s the method: All you need is a sharpie (any color) and a porcelain dish that you want to permanently alter. You can even use super cheap mugs from the dollar store to create gifts or party favors. Just draw on the surface of your mug and bake it for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Allow them to cool completely before washing or using.
After I made my dishes I tried scrubbing them with a kitchen sponge and soap. They held up super well to hand washing. The design did not fade or scratch off at all. Next, I tried running them through the dishwasher. This didn’t turn out so well, half of the design was gone when I took them out (don’t worry, it’s fixable!). So if you use this method to make dishes, remember that these dishes will need to be hand wash only!

EDITED TO ADD: Although many people (including me) have had success with this DIY project we have received many comments from readers who said the marker washed off. I thought I would updated you with this info! The technique is easy and inexpensive, but it doesn’t work for everyone (and I am not sure why). If you want a FOR SURE method, try Pebeo Markers
instead! They are a little bit more pricey, but I have used mine quite a lot. Happy Crafting!

Drawing on mugs is a favourite project here, too!
There are, as you maybe know already, pens that look like your markers but are actually made for drawing on china and “baking” in a regular oven. I always use these: http://en.pebeo.com/Creative-leisure/Decorate-surfaces/Porcelaine-150
An additional idea is to always look out for white or pastel coloured mugs, cups, bowls etc at charity shops and places like that. Here in Scandinavia, a lot of people tend to buy cheap white things at IKEA and then give them away when they find something new … I’ve bought quite a lot of them for almost nothing. Especially for parties with more guests than you have cups for, it’s nice to let every guest pick a cup or mug for the evening and then keep it.

Oh you need to go INDUSTRIAL! I’d try out some industrial sharpies or lab markers— those puppies are designed to stay put unless cleaned with solvents or ethanol– unlike every day sharpies which wash off with a bit of scrubbing. (Might have to run to goodwill for mugs to test them out. ) The ceramic markers work great, too, but they smell awful!
I have to admit, I often come here and swoon over your DIY projects and also have a tinge of envy because oh-my-gosh-I-really-could-never-create-such-awesome-stuff-because-I-have-the-patience-of-a-third-grader, but wow, wow, wow — I think I could do this! that doesn’t sound too safe. it’s probably not a great idea to heat that ink up in an oven.. i’d be shocked if it didn’t release toxic fumes. there are paint pens out there specifically for baking onto ceramic.
I definitely have to try this out. Another place to find cheap mugs is to go to IKEA, they have some really cheap which I usually buy as foundation to my mug creations 😉

I saw this same idea on pinterest. The person said after writing on the dishes, bake them in the oven for 30 minutes @ 150 and the marker will become permanent!

did NOT work for me. they were completely smudgeable after 30 minutes at 350º. sadly. my kids had drawn sweet mugs for father’s day, and they are easily rubbed off. 🙁

In the pic you say to bake at 350ºf, but in the explanation below it say 350 degrees, and I´m confused. Excuse me because we don´t use fahrenheit measure here and i´m going to look for a calculator, but wanted to be sure that it is the same.

I just bought a pen from my craft store a few months ago to do the same thing (haven’t had a chance to try it out yet) but it is an actual porcelain bake pen (not a sharpie) so I am imaging it would be even more permanent? Brilliant! I’ve tried all sorts of special pens to do this and non seem to hold up in the dish washer…. great to know you can just use a Sharpie though! I would love to do this on a patterned vintage tea cup….. perhaps as wedding favours with guests names on and a little flower planted inside…. would double up as name place cards too!

Just did this with my kids. We used all color sharpies and the lighter colors did not work as well. Yellow faded to almost white
I did this project yesterday. I was so excited. I waited until this morning, to hand-wash them, and much to my disappointment, all of my writing came off!! I am giving it another try. I re-wrote on the mugs with my sharpies and will let them sit until tomorrow before I “bake them” @ 350 for 30 minutes. If that doesn’t work, I am going to try using a porcelain marker and see if that helps.
This is probably a “duh” question, but I’ll assume that coloured Sharpies, besides just black, would be okay to use, too?

I just did this for a VBS project this week, and the sharpie came off WITH hand washing…not to be deterred, I tried the OIL BASED sharpies, and they did not come off with hand washing. I haven’t tried putting those in the the dishwasher, so I don’t know how they would hold up to that, but save yourself some trouble, and get the oil based sharpies. They seem to hold up better (they’re made to write on glass).

Wanting to do this idea for someone special, but I was wondering, do you think that the color of the mug would have any effect on the outcome? I can only find examples of white mugs, so I began to wonder… I wanted to do silver on a black mug. I assume the same glaze or whatever you call it would be on both mugs, so it would essentially be working on the same surface, but if the paint used on the mug effects it…? Idk…

I loved these, but wanted something that was dishwasher friendly. I found this site (link below) that offers “porcelain paint pens” that you can use to decorate dishes, bake for a while in a regular oven, and then use as you would any other dish. I thought you might be interested in them for something in the future.

When you bake the mugs do you need to put them on any sort of cookie sheet before putting them into the oven?
Ok, I gave it a try, but was not that successful. I tried it with a permanent marker from Pilot – but that should be the same thing as a Sharpie, or? Baked it for 30 min in 175 degrees Celsius, but it all floated away as soon as it got in touch with hot water…

If you use Pebeo Porcelaine 150 China Paint Fine Tip Marker they stay on in the dishwasher following the same instructions! So if its a keepsake such as a wedding signature piece that your doing this may be a better idea.

I just tried this and, maybe I didn’t let them cool long enough or maybe my sponge is too abrasive but It started to fade when I took the sponge to it, I did everything right.. I suppose I have to try again

We made this a family project. All six of us made very detailed designs and they looked great. I baked them for 30 min at 350, let them cool and tried to wash one of them by hand. The design came off. I am afriad to wash the other five. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You’re right; I dropped a zero! Which makes it $200/yr to opretae. This may be the reason my 3 d-grade arithmetic book said it was a bad idea to do arithmetic while moving a loaded freezer, all covered with dust.Well If I have to wait 18 months for bacon, forget it. I’ll just take the new freezer back.
I tried this and it did not work. Followed the instructions (pretty basic) and when I hand-washed the mugs (long after they cooled) the marker came off completely with rough scrubbing 🙁
This is the cutest thing ever, I would never be able to write so well on a mug though, hell I wouldn’t even be able to write that well on paper!

Alicia Posted on Some frosting doesn’t hold up to deoatcring. Also the cupcakes have to cool completely so that it doesn’t melt. Wilton has recipes online for frosting that can be used to decorate that will hold it’s shape. Better luck next time.

I think this is such a fantastic idea! I gave it a go, and unfortunately it didn’t work for me – my design washed off (hand-washing, too) 🙁
But it may be because I have an old oven that doesn’t work too well, so I might experiment with different temperatures and cooking times to see what works for *my* oven 🙂

There are cermanic paint pens that come in tons of colors, but are pricey. I used them on a white mug and then I baked it per the instructions on the mug and it’s been in the dishwasher every time. I made it 3 years ok and the design is still as good as the day I baked it. So, if you prefer the dishwasher, that may be the way to go. I would have liked to see pictures of the mugs that were sharpied after the dishwasher, maybe the faded look would work on some designs as I bet it won’t come off completely.
Would BIC permanent markers work, too? I love this idea but all I have are BICs!
Thanks for the idea. Is it safe to run them through the oven multiple times? I’m thinking about doing an entire collage design on one and I’d feel better and less likely to smear it if I did it in rounds, ‘sealing’ it with the oven between them. Any advice on that part would be appreciated!

What kind of panel are you talking about? Solar teahmrl, as in for hot water/room heating? Or photovoltaic? In the end its a matter of how good your DIY skills are and from what level of DIY you are talking about. eg, if you are buying the panels and installing them yourself, then there should be no difference. If you are fabricating the panels then you better be good at what you do. Creating photovoltaic cells is not a simple task. Soldering purchased cells together to create panels is tricky as they are easily damaged. Efficiency should not be a problem, but finish might be as well as robustness. It would be safer to buy complete panels and just mount them yourself and set up the batteries ans switch gear. But use good gear and follow instructions very carefully.With teahmrl panels you might not get the same levels of efficiency by using cheaper materials, std glass instead of non reflective for instance, but if space is not an issue, then you can get more heat out by going bigger and still save overall.

Google your question. There are over one mloliin sites on the enter net explaining how to hook up solar panels and the equipment needed.If you want to make the solar cells, you can’t without a mulit mloliin dollar laboratory / factory to grow the silicon crystals and other things required. You can buy the individual cells and then solder them together if you wish. Just hook them in parallel or series depending on the wattage you require.

I tried this and put my mug in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, took it out and let it set to cool overnight. Tried the next morning to hand wash it and it came right off. So disappointed.

Did this with a small plate for my daughter, wrote all her favorite foods around the rim, baked it, but I rinsed in the sink and it came right off.

This is a great idea, but we tried it & had no success. Not sure if the finish on the cups was the problem or not. We used black & colored sharpies…even left one of the cups in for 45min @ 350…still rubbed off after setting over night. My girls were bummed by the results.
Ok I have a question cause I tried this and it didn’t work out so well. Did you wash it in cold water or hot? And was your mug glossy?

Does it have to be sharpie? I tried it with bic permanent markers and almost all of it came off while hand washing. I’m trying it again with thicker markings and baking it 45 min. I hope it will work this time!

so, i tried this on 2 different kinds of mugs and the designs aren’t holding up at all. is there a certain type of mug that needs to be used?
My 2 daughters and I did this a few hours ago, my 6 yr old just filled her mug with water and dripped (of course!) well, the design ran! It was all over her fingers and the counter top! I used this method to make initialed dessert plates with different colored Sharpies. They are in the over “baking” now.

you can also just get a Pebeo 150 marker – do the same thing and then you can wash it in the dishwasher.

I did this and the sharpie did not stay on after I baked it. I went and bought a porcelain marker to use instead and that worked perfectly. Even dishwasher safe!
I loved this idea! I tried it and made anniversary mugs for me and my husband….but after a few washes the marker started coming off 🙁 I followed directions as listed. I really like this gift idea and would like to make more but I want them to last…. What can I do? Help!

Loved the idea so I tried it out. spent the afternoon decorating a mug and then baked it for 30 mins and when I hand washed it with a sponge, the color faded and was rubbing off. I’m a little disappointed to say the least.
do you have to use sharpie or will any permanent marker work?
this didn’t work for me. I bought the mugs from the dollar store (looks just like the mug in your photo) and black sharpie pens. I washed them and let them dry completely before the kids tackled the project.
I let my kids do this project yesterday and then baked them at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. They got up this morning and used them, and then when I went to hand wash them for the first time, the ink washed off right away. Not entirely, but significantly. Did I miss a step?
