After seeing several projects floating around on Pinterest I decided to try the sharpie method for customizing a pair of his + her mugs. The directions listed on Pinterest kinda seemed too easy to be true… so I did a little testing. I even tried running them through the dishwasher and here’s what I found out…
Here’s the method: All you need is a sharpie (any color) and a porcelain dish that you want to permanently alter. You can even use super cheap mugs from the dollar store to create gifts or party favors. Just draw on the surface of your mug and bake it for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Allow them to cool completely before washing or using.
After I made my dishes I tried scrubbing them with a kitchen sponge and soap. They held up super well to hand washing. The design did not fade or scratch off at all. Next, I tried running them through the dishwasher. This didn’t turn out so well, half of the design was gone when I took them out (don’t worry, it’s fixable!). So if you use this method to make dishes, remember that these dishes will need to be hand wash only!
Anyway… that was my fun little weekend project. Hope your weekend is lovely! Elsie
EDITED TO ADD: Although many people (including me) have had success with this DIY project we have received many comments from readers who said the marker washed off. I thought I would updated you with this info! The technique is easy and inexpensive, but it doesn’t work for everyone (and I am not sure why). If you want a FOR SURE method, try Pebeo Markers instead! They are a little bit more pricey, but I have used mine quite a lot. Happy Crafting!

Haha – love this idea, so fun! 🙂
nice, fun and rapid! love this DIY!
Lovely DIY cups! Your handwriting is perfect for it – can I ask whether it is your handwriting that goes onto your photos? If so – do you mind my asking how you do this? I love it!
I love your DIY posts! You always have cool things for DIY! =)
So cute and simple – I definitely need to try this!

How fun! Thanks for taking them for a test run! Like you said, this seemed too good to be true and I didn’t want to waste my time with a project that would get destroyed so easily. Maybe I’ll even write “hand wash only” on the bottom of the mug so I don’t forget 🙂

I saw on [ pinteresthttp://pinterest.com/pin/199776933440717415/%5D that if you bake them for 30 minutes at 350 degrees, the sharpie design won’t wash away! I will have to try it out and see if it works! Those mugs are so cute! lovely.

Saw the peek you posted on Instagram and was very excited to check this out. Very lovable. I’ve seen this a bunch on Pinterest and thought that it might be too good to be true, excited to try it out myself!

Drawing on mugs is a favourite project here, too!
There are, as you maybe know already, pens that look like your markers but are actually made for drawing on china and “baking” in a regular oven. I always use these: http://en.pebeo.com/Creative-leisure/Decorate-surfaces/Porcelaine-150
An additional idea is to always look out for white or pastel coloured mugs, cups, bowls etc at charity shops and places like that. Here in Scandinavia, a lot of people tend to buy cheap white things at IKEA and then give them away when they find something new … I’ve bought quite a lot of them for almost nothing. Especially for parties with more guests than you have cups for, it’s nice to let every guest pick a cup or mug for the evening and then keep it.
Brilliant! Thanks for ‘road-testing’ this Elsie – I too saw it on pinterest a few times and thought it had to be too good to be true! I’m definitely going to give it a try!
Adorable quick DIY – thank you for sharing 🙂
oh my gosh that’s so awesome!

Thanks!
Beautiful!!!!
Have a Fab week girls!!!
What a cute project idea. I’ll have to try that.
I bet an oil based sharpie would work better than a water-based one. you can get them in most craft stores.
Love this! Definitely will be a rainy day project for my apartment in the fall! eek! <3
Oh you need to go INDUSTRIAL! I’d try out some industrial sharpies or lab markers— those puppies are designed to stay put unless cleaned with solvents or ethanol– unlike every day sharpies which wash off with a bit of scrubbing. (Might have to run to goodwill for mugs to test them out. ) The ceramic markers work great, too, but they smell awful!
I have to admit, I often come here and swoon over your DIY projects and also have a tinge of envy because oh-my-gosh-I-really-could-never-create-such-awesome-stuff-because-I-have-the-patience-of-a-third-grader, but wow, wow, wow — I think I could do this! And it is precious!! Party favors! Yes. So cute. Good stuff, gals… as always! Even if difficult for me to attain. xoxo

wow, this is amazing, and so so easy!! I think I have a project for today! x
that doesn’t sound too safe. it’s probably not a great idea to heat that ink up in an oven.. i’d be shocked if it didn’t release toxic fumes. there are paint pens out there specifically for baking onto ceramic.
I definitely have to try this out. Another place to find cheap mugs is to go to IKEA, they have some really cheap which I usually buy as foundation to my mug creations 😉
Adorable! This could be lots of fun!! 🙂
super cute and super easy! yay!
What an awesome idea! Thanks for testing it out for us 🙂
I saw this same idea on pinterest. The person said after writing on the dishes, bake them in the oven for 30 minutes @ 150 and the marker will become permanent!
Might make a few of these today! I’ve been wanting an excuse to drag my boyfriend to the dollar store…
I’ve been sewing those foxes of yours like crazy lately for my apartment. Making another one tonight with sail-boat themed material!

love this idea! my handwriting is so much better with a sharpie compared to those porcelain drawing pens. 🙂
cool! i’ve been seeing this around lately, too! luckily, i do not own a dish washer! 🙂
what an amazing project! i definitely want to do this – also you totally have the BEST writing! please make it a font and send it to me 🙂

We dont have those pens in Portugal… looking at the website, there are so many types… would you be so kind to tell me which shapie did u use?
Thanks!

Such an easy DIY project and it’s great for party favors and little gifts. Thinking of going to Ikea to pick up a few cheap mugs and get drawing! 🙂
So lovely! I wish they withstood being in the dishwasher, but I’m sure Michael’s has a solution for that. (They always do, lol) I can’t wait to make one for me and my boyfriend <3

Wow! What a cute and simple way to personalize a mug. I like this a lot!
Love this,i will try it when i at home.
Ivonne Carley from Beans and Ink made something like this in February! Probably the most gorgeous design ever, it was based on the movie UP. She’s super talented and hilarious. You gals should check her out!

Seems like you would get the same result from the sharpie without baking it. Anyone tried it that way? (the projects that were linked seem to have skipped that step)
This is so cute, I love the little tea bag tag addition. Might give this a try.
Thanks for the idea

Thanks, working on it on my day off. Love easy crafty things 🙂
it’s fun.. 🙂 http://lovesimplegreen.blogspot.com/
sharpie also makes oil-based markers that are a little more durable than their standard ones. Maybe those would hold up better in the dish washer?
It would be such a simple project for little ones to try too – and with the range of colours that sharpie comes in really lots of fun! This would be a fun end of year teacher’s gift, or Xmas/birthday presents later on in the year… Thanks for the suggestion, Elsie – have an awesome week!
That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing! Can’t wait to try it. xx

did NOT work for me. they were completely smudgeable after 30 minutes at 350º. sadly. my kids had drawn sweet mugs for father’s day, and they are easily rubbed off. 🙁

I´m absolutely doing this, but have a one question.
In the pic you say to bake at 350ºf, but in the explanation below it say 350 degrees, and I´m confused. Excuse me because we don´t use fahrenheit measure here and i´m going to look for a calculator, but wanted to be sure that it is the same.
Thank you!!!

miss sarah had a great idea to put “handwash only” on the bottom!
Love it! Super fun thing to do on the weekend.
Love these Elsie, very cute!
I just bought a pen from my craft store a few months ago to do the same thing (haven’t had a chance to try it out yet) but it is an actual porcelain bake pen (not a sharpie) so I am imaging it would be even more permanent? I’m from Australia so I don’t know if you guys would have the same brands but this pen looks similar:

I am actually trying it out now. I read your post and had to go into town anyway so picked up a permanent marker and a 1 euro mug, and the mug is now in the oven! Eep, I’m excited (it’s a present for my boyfriend, a mug lover, haha).

your handwriting is adorable!
Amazing! Was that free hand writing or did you stencil/trace it somehow?
Brilliant! I’ve tried all sorts of special pens to do this and non seem to hold up in the dish washer…. great to know you can just use a Sharpie though! I would love to do this on a patterned vintage tea cup….. perhaps as wedding favours with guests names on and a little flower planted inside…. would double up as name place cards too!
Wow this is so cool! TOTALLY doing this as gifts…and perhaps for myself as well!

I have been wondering if I could use sharpies on the mugs! I wanted to make cups with portraits on them as gifts and I tried out my porcelaine pen and it just wasn’t cutting it… This makes me so happy!
something for the weekend!
I love your blog! x
check out mine http://www.honeylaced.wordpress.com
These are so cute! Want to try but I have a question first…do you think that a Sharpie paint pen will work? It’s an oil-based paint marker.
Thanks
This is so cool!!! Now I want to go get a bunch of mugs and make a set or two!
Deffinitely doing this i love it!
that is such a cute idea! I think I might try a more colorful one as a present for my boyfriend. I’ll be sure to post a picture of it on my blog, too!

aww really cute. definitely trying that.
OMG! Your blog is so adorable !!
Do you know anything about doing this using that porcelain pen?
I tried this and the sharpie came off even with hand washing! I was super disappointed, and I don’t know what I did wrong… 🙁
Ooh, I want to do this for me and boyfriend!
Just did this with my kids. We used all color sharpies and the lighter colors did not work as well. Yellow faded to almost white
I did this project yesterday. I was so excited. I waited until this morning, to hand-wash them, and much to my disappointment, all of my writing came off!! I am giving it another try. I re-wrote on the mugs with my sharpies and will let them sit until tomorrow before I “bake them” @ 350 for 30 minutes. If that doesn’t work, I am going to try using a porcelain marker and see if that helps.
This is probably a “duh” question, but I’ll assume that coloured Sharpies, besides just black, would be okay to use, too?
What a cute idea! This might just be the exact way I can find my dream mug 🙂
http://the-makingofthings.blogspot.com.au/
Love Love Love!
Will be making these stat!
http://livelifeartfully.blogspot.com
I just did this for a VBS project this week, and the sharpie came off WITH hand washing…not to be deterred, I tried the OIL BASED sharpies, and they did not come off with hand washing. I haven’t tried putting those in the the dishwasher, so I don’t know how they would hold up to that, but save yourself some trouble, and get the oil based sharpies. They seem to hold up better (they’re made to write on glass).
So lovely! It seems simple yet gives an excellent result 🙂 A must-try! Thanks
Cheers!

tried twice, didn’t work for me….gonna use porcelain markers next time.

Wanting to do this idea for someone special, but I was wondering, do you think that the color of the mug would have any effect on the outcome? I can only find examples of white mugs, so I began to wonder… I wanted to do silver on a black mug. I assume the same glaze or whatever you call it would be on both mugs, so it would essentially be working on the same surface, but if the paint used on the mug effects it…? Idk…
Sweet idea (: is that 350 Fahrenheit or centigrade though?:L xox
Just a caution: On the Pebeo Porcelaine Pens it is recommended that they aren’t used on surfaces that come in contact with food. Since those pens are sealed more permanently on ceramics than sharpies and have that warning, it may be a possible health risk if a sharpie is used on pieces that your food or lips may touch.

Cute. 🙂
Hey, your ideas are amazing! I love them all 🙂
I’m from Poland and I have a question about this mugs – can I use any permanent marker or it must be sharpie?
really liked this idea…but wanted it on a glass mug….doesnt work on glass
just made these!! Amazing!! Thanks for reviewing them 🙂http://theperfectshadeofgrey.blogspot.com/2012/06/lovely-parting-gift.html
I loved these, but wanted something that was dishwasher friendly. I found this site (link below) that offers “porcelain paint pens” that you can use to decorate dishes, bake for a while in a regular oven, and then use as you would any other dish. I thought you might be interested in them for something in the future.
http://www.goinghometoroost.com/2010/diy-craft-projects/diy-using-porcelain-paint-pens/
When you bake the mugs do you need to put them on any sort of cookie sheet before putting them into the oven?
Ok, I gave it a try, but was not that successful. I tried it with a permanent marker from Pilot – but that should be the same thing as a Sharpie, or? Baked it for 30 min in 175 degrees Celsius, but it all floated away as soon as it got in touch with hot water…
For any Swedish readers of this comment, I can recommend buying special porcelain pens at Panduro
http://www.pandurohobby.se/Katalog/20-Mala-Rita/2040-Fargpennor/204010-Porslins-glaspennor
OhEmmmGeezers!!! Love that. All over it.
I think if you use a porcelain paint pen (like this http://www.amazon.com/Pebeo-Porcelaine-China-Marker-Anthracite/dp/B00266MNGK) instead of a sharpie it will be dishwasher safe… Takes some of the “thrifty” factor out, but these pens aren’t TOO pricy
This is such a great idea! Your mugs turned out great. Unfortunately my hand writing is horrible so they’d probably look like a 2nd grader’s art project if I did it!
Hey, did you try using them in a microwave? DId the image hold up?
Ahhh … amazing … love this idea … so creative, I’m going to have to give this a go soon … just need to get a sharpie and some mugs 🙂
Mina 🙂
Great idea! If I do end up trying this, it will be my first DIY adventure! By the way, I featured this post on my blog, Actually Allie.
I did this, followed the instructions to a t, it looked great till I hand washed them and it scrubbed right off!! 🙁
I am going to buy a few white mugs to try this out, looks great – thanks!
We Made Some And Love Them!!
However don’t use Green Sharpie, for some reason our green came out looking like burn spots (in every place we used it) So we had orangey/brown colors 🙁 but love the mugs 🙂
I loved this project! However I have a dilemma- one of the cups I made started losing its sharpie around the second time I hand washed it- should I just bake it longer? Do you guys have any recommendations?
I’m going to try making these with my roommate!
Love this so easy to add your own touch
If you wanted to do something like this more permanently, porcelain paint is fairly simple to use.
I love this idea! I’m wanting to use it for an anniversary gift and I was wondering where you got these mugs?
love it
If you do this on a plate, is it food safe?
I love this! I can’t wait to make these for myself and to give as gifts!
so simple yet a great idea!
http://www.thebutterflywing.blogspot.com
This is going to be awesome. I have two kids that I’m watching next week (on top of my three) and this will be awesome to do!
Very cute! I wish there was a way to make them dishwasher safe though…I’m not a fan of washing dishes by hand!
I tried this with my kids for their dad for fathers day but you can’t rub the design with your fingers it smears and rubbs off completely. Really sad it didn’t work all that well.
Just want to let you know that I tried this project and it was fun and easy! I made my boyfriend mugs for his birthday, he loved them! Thanks for the awesome idea : )
hm. where to get that sharpie?
If you use Pebeo Porcelaine 150 China Paint Fine Tip Marker they stay on in the dishwasher following the same instructions! So if its a keepsake such as a wedding signature piece that your doing this may be a better idea.
this is beautiful! You do always catch the spirit of adventure.
I just tried this and, maybe I didn’t let them cool long enough or maybe my sponge is too abrasive but It started to fade when I took the sponge to it, I did everything right.. I suppose I have to try again

I was so excited to make these for my
Gramma and grampas anniversary. I followed the instructions to a T and I told my gramma not to put them in the dish washer so she didn’t and the marker still came off :(. Not sure what went wrong? My
Mugs might of had a glaze on them that wouldn’t let the market seep in but I’m
Not sure, they were pretty much identical to the
Mugs in this picture. Oh well.
Hi! I’ve just try this but the sharpie still goes out 🙁 Do you know why happened this? I would love to hear your answer 🙂

We made this a family project. All six of us made very detailed designs and they looked great. I baked them for 30 min at 350, let them cool and tried to wash one of them by hand. The design came off. I am afriad to wash the other five. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheryl
You’re right; I dropped a zero! Which makes it $200/yr to opretae. This may be the reason my 3 d-grade arithmetic book said it was a bad idea to do arithmetic while moving a loaded freezer, all covered with dust.Well If I have to wait 18 months for bacon, forget it. I’ll just take the new freezer back.
I tried this and it did not work. Followed the instructions (pretty basic) and when I hand-washed the mugs (long after they cooled) the marker came off completely with rough scrubbing 🙁
This is the cutest thing ever, I would never be able to write so well on a mug though, hell I wouldn’t even be able to write that well on paper!
Do NOT let nail polish remover any where near it hahahA!!! but good to know not to put it in the dish washer
Hi there, I featured this project on FaveCraftsBlog’s Sharpie Crafts Link Love Roundup! See it here:

Thanks so much. I love the project!
Alicia Posted on Some frosting doesn’t hold up to deoatcring. Also the cupcakes have to cool completely so that it doesn’t melt. Wilton has recipes online for frosting that can be used to decorate that will hold it’s shape. Better luck next time.
Amanda Posted on You are now a Pinterest star, and making huendrds of people laugh. Daily. How does that make you feel? I’d be proud. Very proud. Awesome tag line. Nailed It.’LOL
I think this is such a fantastic idea! I gave it a go, and unfortunately it didn’t work for me – my design washed off (hand-washing, too) 🙁
But it may be because I have an old oven that doesn’t work too well, so I might experiment with different temperatures and cooking times to see what works for *my* oven 🙂
these would make really cute gifts……
There are cermanic paint pens that come in tons of colors, but are pricey. I used them on a white mug and then I baked it per the instructions on the mug and it’s been in the dishwasher every time. I made it 3 years ok and the design is still as good as the day I baked it. So, if you prefer the dishwasher, that may be the way to go. I would have liked to see pictures of the mugs that were sharpied after the dishwasher, maybe the faded look would work on some designs as I bet it won’t come off completely.
Would BIC permanent markers work, too? I love this idea but all I have are BICs!
Thanks for the idea. Is it safe to run them through the oven multiple times? I’m thinking about doing an entire collage design on one and I’d feel better and less likely to smear it if I did it in rounds, ‘sealing’ it with the oven between them. Any advice on that part would be appreciated!
Would this work with BIC pens ? Or sharpie only?
, Take the kids and get out of the house. We’ll call the police, we don’t have a clown staute. The clown staute is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don’t post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw
What kind of panel are you talking about? Solar teahmrl, as in for hot water/room heating? Or photovoltaic? In the end its a matter of how good your DIY skills are and from what level of DIY you are talking about. eg, if you are buying the panels and installing them yourself, then there should be no difference. If you are fabricating the panels then you better be good at what you do. Creating photovoltaic cells is not a simple task. Soldering purchased cells together to create panels is tricky as they are easily damaged. Efficiency should not be a problem, but finish might be as well as robustness. It would be safer to buy complete panels and just mount them yourself and set up the batteries ans switch gear. But use good gear and follow instructions very carefully. With teahmrl panels you might not get the same levels of efficiency by using cheaper materials, std glass instead of non reflective for instance, but if space is not an issue, then you can get more heat out by going bigger and still save overall.
“bureaucratic Despotism . is more dangerous than solsaciim”Let me check the math, one democrat Bureaucrat on the CPSC made the decision to purposely injure baby crib retailers to the tune of 100,000 X$100 (modest guess of wholesale cost)=$10 million in times of serious unemployment and economic stress?Entrenchment of liberal / socialist democrats in our government’s Agencies Fed. State and local is truly dangerous!
Google your question. There are over one mloliin sites on the enter net explaining how to hook up solar panels and the equipment needed. If you want to make the solar cells, you can’t without a mulit mloliin dollar laboratory / factory to grow the silicon crystals and other things required. You can buy the individual cells and then solder them together if you wish. Just hook them in parallel or series depending on the wattage you require.
Love This Idea! Supercute! Xo -Amélie from beuniquebecoco.blogspot.com
I love it.
I once painted some plates with liquid porcelain ink, but that looks so much easier and I prefer the result.
So does it not explode? Cause I’m pretty worried I’ll shatter all my dishes at 350 for 30 minutes…
I love your hand writing!!
Thanx! Soooooo looking forward to trying this 🙂
I will be doing this! I love your design.

Ey, I did this and the black sharpie turned out brown!! Is there any solution? What can i do? I followed instructions perfectly but it turned out like this 🙁
can you use the same technique on glass?

I cant wait to do this! Awesome!
Fantastic idea!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I have never thought that you could do this with sharpies, I thought you need special porcelane pens to do this..
I shared this tutorial in my blog: http://whiterabbittreasures.blogspot.com/2012/07/favourite-crafts-lately.html hope it’s okay 🙂
And love your blog by the way! Must put you guys on my reading list 🙂
Awesome and easy DIY! I tried it myself today: here’s the result! http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m707hzzuHI1r2xlnyo1_500.png

Mine wore off….any ideas what I might have done wrong?
Megan
Does this work with color sharpies? 😀
that looks so cool !

xxxx
I never knew it could be so simple. Thanks for sharing!
But doesn’t that mean over time, even by handwashing, the design will fade away?
Love it. 🙂 We are both coffee fiends, so I will need to figure out a way to differentiate the his/hers style before giving this a go. I shared your link at http://creativityunmasked.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/six-for-saturday-or-sunday_14.html
Wow, way to divide the sexes.
I tried this and put my mug in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, took it out and let it set to cool overnight. Tried the next morning to hand wash it and it came right off. So disappointed.
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll be sure to write “hand-wash only” on the bottom.
Did this with a small plate for my daughter, wrote all her favorite foods around the rim, baked it, but I rinsed in the sink and it came right off.
i tried this and it didn’t work =(
This is a great idea, but we tried it & had no success. Not sure if the finish on the cups was the problem or not. We used black & colored sharpies…even left one of the cups in for 45min @ 350…still rubbed off after setting over night. My girls were bummed by the results.
Ok I have a question cause I tried this and it didn’t work out so well. Did you wash it in cold water or hot? And was your mug glossy?
Does anyone know if it’s food safe? Like if I decorated a bowl, could I eat my cereal from it?
I loved this idea! Tried it, then handwashed it, and most of it came off! I used white porceline glazed mugs, reg permanant sharpie, baked at 350 for 30 min, and didnt wash until next day.. Where did I go wrong?
Hi! Cute idea. I want to do it for my boyfriend, but I have a question.
When you say “bake it at 350 degrees” you mean using a conventional oven or a pottery specialized one?
Any advice for this process?
Thank you 🙂
i tried this today and it didn’t work. the ink washed off :[
Absolutely love this am going to post it on my blog today – linked back to your site and stating you as the creator and source – I just think its so cool and my readers would also love it! Thank you.
Does it have to be sharpie? I tried it with bic permanent markers and almost all of it came off while hand washing. I’m trying it again with thicker markings and baking it 45 min. I hope it will work this time!
I tried this and it didn’t work at all! The marker came almost totally off just with hand washing. Is there anything I missed?
Amazing!! I have the full sharpie colour set, I’m definitely doing some doodling!!
Tried this and came off with handwashing with a gentle cleaner…
so, i tried this on 2 different kinds of mugs and the designs aren’t holding up at all. is there a certain type of mug that needs to be used?
My 2 daughters and I did this a few hours ago, my 6 yr old just filled her mug with water and dripped (of course!) well, the design ran! It was all over her fingers and the counter top! Thank God I got it off of both, but what did we do wrong?! Used colored Sharpies, thrift store ceramic mugs, baked at 350 for 30 minutes…
HELP!!
(Second Comment) Ok a couple of the mugs are porcelain… I guess it only works on true ceramic mugs?!
I did this and even after baking, the Sharpie is washing off with just gentle hand washing 🙁
is it microwave safe?
I used this method to make initialed dessert plates with different colored Sharpies. They are in the over “baking” now.
is that 350celsius?
you can also just get a Pebeo 150 marker – do the same thing and then you can wash it in the dishwasher.
so cute! Oh my godness you are such an inspiration
Could you do it on a plate? And if so would it be safe to eat from? And has anyone tried using the colored sharpies?
Love this idea! Will have to try it for christmas gifts this year. My mom is a coffee nut and my MIL loves lemons and tea. Will have to try it ASAP!
Maybe even get my kids in on it!
Mine came off…..any ideas?
I did this and the sharpie did not stay on after I baked it. I went and bought a porcelain marker to use instead and that worked perfectly. Even dishwasher safe!
I loved this idea! I tried it and made anniversary mugs for me and my husband….but after a few washes the marker started coming off 🙁 I followed directions as listed. I really like this gift idea and would like to make more but I want them to last…. What can I do? Help!
lovely idea – I am going to be on the look out for some vintage white tea cups to see if I can make them look as cool as yours! :0)
I tried this today and the sharpie just rubbed right off! Any tips?
This did not work for me. Very disappointed. :/
I did this exactly like u said and it came off first cup coffee few days later
Love it! I bought a mug and four permanent markers for two bucks at Dollar Tree 🙂 yay for the inexpensive! Mine actually turned out really well!
Just a quick question:
I’ve done a few of these, and even hand washing them, the ink is rubbing off. Any advice on what I’m doing wrong?
Amber
Loved the idea so I tried it out. spent the afternoon decorating a mug and then baked it for 30 mins and when I hand washed it with a sponge, the color faded and was rubbing off. I’m a little disappointed to say the least.
do you have to use sharpie or will any permanent marker work?
this didn’t work for me. I bought the mugs from the dollar store (looks just like the mug in your photo) and black sharpie pens. I washed them and let them dry completely before the kids tackled the project.
I let my kids do this project yesterday and then baked them at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. They got up this morning and used them, and then when I went to hand wash them for the first time, the ink washed off right away. Not entirely, but significantly. Did I miss a step?
Thanks! you are so creative, this is what i call innovation.
Why did mine not work???
I used exactly the same pen, baked for the same time and temperature and the design rubbed right off afterwards. Soooo upset 🙁
I, like tons of other people, was wondering the same thing about the “resilience” of this project. Thanks for letting us know!
WHat a fantastic idea. Simple and beautiful.
This doesnt work. It washes off practically immediately. Too good to be true :/
http://burkehareco.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/diy-design-cups-with-a-sharpie-fail/#
I tried this and some of my coulrs faded and then washed off =C
My oven only went upto 50 though so baked them for slightly longer…. I may need to try afew more!!
LOVE the idea though xx
Fabulous, Simple and Cute DIY Coffee Mug that is such a Great Ideas.
That’s really nice mug. Will definitely try it at home. Just waiting for markers. Thanks for such idea.
This is such a great idea!
