Hey there! I’m highlighting one of my favorite clean beauty brands today (this isn’t sponsored) and sharing my summer makeup routine.
I have shared skincare and makeup routines here many times, but what makes this one unique is that it’s my bare essentials routine. Anything less than this and I’d just take the day off makeup completely. Like most of us, I don’t like to wear as much makeup in the summertime. So here’s my minimal routine.
I always begin with primer. I only added primer maybe a year ago and WOW what a big difference it makes. It really helps to smooth pores and look about a million times more hydrated.
COOLA makes a great primer with SPF 30, which is perfect for long summer days. Plus, there is nothing worse than putting sunscreen on over a full face of makeup—ew. Better to knock it out with the primer. Don’t forget your neck.
(If I’m not wearing any makeup at all, I always put on these drops. They are really silky and easy to apply—they don’t feel like sunscreen—but are SPF 30. The reason I always put these on regardless of whether or not I’ll be outside is because they also protect from blue light if I know I’ll be in front of my computer all day.)
Next, I use a BB cream. Lately I am loving this one. It’s closer to full coverage than any BB cream I have ever used and buildable. I have a lot of unevenness in my skin and dark circles and this product helps me feel evened out, but not too covered up. It’s very natural looking.
I also added eyeliner after this step, I just didn’t take a photo. Also I should note that I currently have eyelash extensions and just got my brows micro bladed, so that cuts down on the time I spend on my routine quite a bit! If you’re on the fence or interested in either of those things I can share more in the comments.
Next, I use this blush. It is my all-time favorite blush and the ONLY product I bought during my first month of swapping to clean beauty that I still buy time after time. I like the peach color on my fair skin, but rose color works better when I have a spray tan.
Next, I add just a teeny bit of highlighter along the top of my cheekbones and around my eyes. Highlighter is a less is more thing, but it makes a big difference in how “glowy” my skin looks in the end.
Next, I add a lip color. I do love to try different lip products all the time and this COOLA lip tint has SPF 30.
Something I had learned from caring for Nova’s skin and also from going in for my first skin cancer screening this year is that there as so many parts of our bodies that we don’t think to use SPF on. Our scalps, our ears, our lips … and more. So lip tint with SPF is a good thing to keep with you in your purse all summer!
The last step is setting spray and I have to kind of rave about this product—it made my skin look so dewy (see the next pic). I am sold! Plus, it has SPF as well. I am going to keep this setting spray around year round.
Alright, here’s my finished look!
This is what I do with my routine most days unless it’s a very special occasion or I don’t wear makeup at all. I grew up wearing tons of makeup and always trying to change my appearance, but the older I have gotten I have come to realize that embracing my skin and just giving it a little boost is the best way to go. At least for me!

I’m torn between the Cucumber Matte Finish Moisturizer and the Sunless Tan Firming lotion – I have oily skin so finding the perfect SPF has been a journey and a half, but I love a good glow all over the body!
I’d love to try the primer and the setting spray! I often avoid make-up in the summer because it just seems to get greasy and “melt” away. It seems like some of these COOLA products would really help!

Those sun silk drops look right up my alley! I have been trying to find a good way to wear sunscreen that doesn’t layer thickly on my skin and this might be the ticket! Plus, I sit in front of a computer all day at work and had no idea blue light was a thing! I def need this.

I have been using the SPF 30 Scalp and Hair Spray and love it. My scalp was burning in the sun here in Phoenix and this has been a miracle product. Highly recommend! I would love to try other Coola products, so my fingers are crossed!

The Scalp and Hair mist SPF 30 isn’t greasy or stiff.

A couple companies make brush on sunscreen for touch ups and I bet this would work good for hair without making it greasy? I have the Tarte brand one and might try it.

I’m going to share more of it on our Instagram story. I went to Olivia at Skin MB in Nashville- she did a great job. I chose her based on a recommendation from one of my best friends in town. I definitely think a personal recommendation is a must! And when you go, go with your makeup on how you like it so they can see what makes you feel like yourself.

Definitely give it a try. Neutrogena is marketed as clean, but it is NOT a clean brand (I used it for years- so I was super upset when I found this out).

I would love to try the Mineral Face SPF 30 Matte Tint Moisturizer. I had a previous SPF plus tint that I used all the time but since getting the Think Dirty App I can’t bring myself to buy it anymore. It rates so badly. 🙁 I do love a tinted moisturizer though, it’s one less step for me on busy mornings and I know that I’m getting my SPF on my face at the same time!

That Daydream Mineral Primer is my choice! I’ve only ever used primers that I’ve received as small samples from Ipsy, and I’d like to make the change to a full size! I recently tried Coola’s Sun Drops and Sunscreen after seeing them on ABM, and I have to say their products are top notch. They were the first sunscreen products that I’ve ever used that don’t feel like sticky sunscreen (which is my biggest pet peeve). How is the hair sunscreen? My scalp burns so bad but I hate the greasy feeling I get when I put sunclscreen in my part. That product could be a game changer! I always forget to put sunscreen on in my hair – mine is super dark but also fine so it gets a bit greasy looking when I do. I’d be most jazzed about COOLA’s Organic SPF 30 Scalp & Hair Mist. It doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that would make me look greasy.

I would love to try COOLA’s Beauty and the Beach tinted lip trio this summer. I do minimal makeup year round, and find that a little pop of color on my lips usually makes me feel just a bit more put-together. Plus sunscreen in a lip color is such a bonus!
Daydream® Mineral SPF 30 Makeup Primer Sunscreen!
I already use COOLA’s Moisturizing Face SPF 30 Organic Sunscreen Lotion every morning, but now I’m really curious about the makeup setting sunscreen spray. That seems like it would also be a good way to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. I’m great about initial application, but rarely reapply unless I’m at the lake or doing something else purely outdoors.
Also, I’d be interested in hearing more about micro blading. How do you like it?
That spf 30 setting spray would be the best! Especially for layering on again as you need to reapply. that’s my worry–i use products with sunscreen in it, but you have to reapply that too, like normal sunscreen, and I never want to rub sunscreen on over my blush and foundation and whatnot. But I’m a redhead (i got sunburned on my shoulders the other day walking down the street trying to decide what to eat for lunch) So I ned to use sunscreen religiously!
I’ve actually been wanting to try Coola for a while now, and this would be the perfect opportunity to do so! I recently found out I have rosacea, and since I can’t afford to replace ALL of my skincare and makeup products in one go, this giveaway would be amazing to help me try new, clean products. I hate how my makeup always looks nice in the morning and then by mid-afternoon, my skin looks dull and my blush has lost some of its shine. I’d also use the sun silk drops too. I have to admit I didn’t consider blue light being an issue, but now I’m very concerned about that since I have such fair, sensitive skin. I mentioned this on insta but I fell in love with the coola sunscreen in the June beauty box. I’m pregnant and have rosacea/eczema. It’s the first face sunscreen that hasn’t irritated my skin (which has been even more sensitive while pregnant) I would love to try their primer. I received the Coola classic sunncreen moisturizer white tea SPF 50 within your beauty box. After researching the ingredients I found out that it contains octinoxate and avobenzone. Some specialists believe it to be harmful and certain studies suggest that the ingredients behave similarly to the hormone estrogene. It’s not recommended to use on children or pregnant women. I am confused. Could you please comment on that?

We appreciate your question and while we stand by the products in our beauty boxes, we always recommend consulting with your doctor if you have a specific ingredient concern as we recognize everybody is different and has unique concerns! However, we can share that Oxybenzone is the main sunscreen ingredient that has been most linked to hormone disruption, which you won’t find in any COOLA formulas. The primary concern in the community with Octinoxate right now is its impact to coral reefs, and COOLA will be reformulating this product away from it by the end of this year for that reason. As for Avobenzone, no existing studies link it to hormone disruption. All this being said, if you have any sensitivity concerns, we would recommend a mineral sunscreen — COOLA has the Baby Lotion or the Matte Tint Mineral Sunscreen.

One sunscreen product that I’ve recently fallen in love with is ‘Supergoop! Glow Stick Sunscreen SPF 50’. It’s utterly amazing! You can tote it around everywhere you go & actually reapply as we’re supposed to! 😉 Since it goes on like a dry oil, it rubs in effortlessly & leaves zero white residue behind. I really cannot rave about this stuff more. 🙂
