Japanese Magazine Inspiration

Japanese Magazines 1Japanese Magazines 1Japanese Magazines 1Japanese Magazines 1Our pal Katrina was so sweet to pick up some Japanese magazines for our flights home. We got super inspired from the beautiful photography and styling. Here are a few snapshots of spreads we loved. I'm realizing that I need to subscribe to more magazines. What are some of your favorites? (Japanese or otherwise) xo. elsie

  • I read pretty much every issue of the British Country Living – I am absolutely in love with the photographs, the rustic house makeovers and the crafty small businesses. Love it so much! 🙂

  • I love flippin’ through a VOGUE magazine and ESSENCE in my mailbox always makes me smile! Like you, Elsie, I love to get inspiration for when I find a great deal at a vintage/consignment shop! Your blog is my digital magazine– thanks for keeping up to date, with vibrant colors, delicious recipes and great content!

  • I like reading Elle, Cosmo and Fashion. 🙂 I love the fact that they always have very interesting pieces and I really love browsing through them. 😉

  • I’ve really been thinking of picking up a real simple subscriptions simply because I LOVE the magazine layout.

  • You need to check out Foam magazine! It’s a fashion/beach culture/surf magazine with the most amazing editorials and coolest girls on the cover (Karen Elson and Lykee Li for example!)

    xo, Brittan

  • Oh this is awesome! I used to live in Japan for a few years so your post kind of hit home 🙂 I love japanese magazines since the quality is pretty high and there are always so many beautiful pictures to look at. When it comes to my favorites there are actually way too many to list them all, but I particularly enjoy “Vivi”

  • I read far too many magazines. Can’t help but love Glamour, Self and Marie Claire

    Treasure Tromp

  • I love Fräulein magazine, which is a German magazine. And I like the Swedisch version of Elle magazine, which I unfortunalety can´t buy in Germany.

  • This is really cool! I was always interested in magazines outside the U.S.

On another note, when will we find out the winner for the May Giveaway???

  • What great inspiration. Love the style in these magazines. Thanks for all your posts. They are always so very inspiring and creative.

  • British Elle is great, and Company (UK) has just been relaunched to a more ‘bloggy’ kind of layout and content style, it’s even printed on eco paper I believe.
I recently found Mollie Makes, which is great (and featured a wedding magazine with Elsie and Jeremy’s super ceremony!)

  • I see Fudge everywhere and it seems like a really cool magazine. As for Japanese magazines I only have InRed and Popteen. Popteen is too girly for me although I like some of their regularly featured brands like Liz Lisa. I tend to like homey and mori vibes more and this post makes me want to get a copy of Fudge soon.

  • I love Saveur and Bon Appetit Magazine! AND I just got a new sponsor for my blog- 1stChoiceMagazines!

Anyone who orders from 1stchoicemags.com and uses the code: SIMPLYDELICIOUS will receive 25% OFF THEIR ORDER!

  • The only mag i get regularly is frankie. i dont know if you girls have heard if it but i know you would love it. it is a quirky little crafty folksy indie mag. well not so little now since its one of australias fastest growing magazines in terms of circulation…

  • These look very cool, and kind of already have an Elsie and Emma vibe to them if you ask me. I like all of the usual suspects, I think my favourite right now is Marie Claire (and I’m also guilty of buying several home decor mags) x

  • I love magazines! The big bummer is that there are so many amazing magazines overseas. The US doesn’t seem to have anything that compares. I think it would be awesome if there were a mag for ABM! 🙂 I’d totally subscribe!

Can’t wait for the book to come out!

  • I love reading Nylon magazine, especially their awesome, huge music issue, which should be hitting stands soon! Eek!

  • Recently I’ve fallen in love with Company, as it’s basically like a fun, fashion filled scrapbook!

  • real simple is one of my all-time favorites.

i need a new decorating magazine. loved domino and have been floundering without it since domino folded. 🙁

  • Nice! I’m a bit of a magazine tramp. I love Bust, Country Living, ReadyMade and I pick up craft magazines whenever possible.
    Thanks for sharing;)

  • I am lucky to live in Seattle where there is a Kinokuniya bookstore in the International District that carries not only the a
Asian fashion mags but the sewing and crochet books, too (which have such clear diagrams that I don’t need to be able to read Japanese to make stuff). Just curious, as I am trying to cut back on the number of print mags and books I bring back to my teeny apartment I lean more toward digital ones now. Anyone ever heard of a digital subscription to any of the popular Asian fashion mags (like Fudge, Spoon, Frankie, etc.)?

  • Ahh I loved reading the magazines while living in Japan. I would always spend an extra 5-10 minutes in the magazine aise while picking up snacks at 7-11. I even bought some extras and shipped them home when I moved away. The men’s fashion magazines are great too, forgot the names though.

  • I’ve always loved Japanese Magazines and anything Japanese or otherwise, there’s one that advertises mostly Japanese music and some of the outfits and photoshoots in there are really quite impressive and, I find, inspiring! These two Magazines are called “Duet” and “Wink Up”. 😀

  • I love getting inspired from magazines. I am so used to using the internet as a source that I often forget the unmatched inspiration that can come from a physical book or magazine. I also need to subscribe to more. I look forward to scrolling through the comments to find suggestions. 🙂

  • Nice! This reminds me that there’s a lot of time that I don’t go to the japanese centre in London – musto go there next weekend or so 🙂

  • Gorgeous! We went to Tokyo on our honeymoon and it was amazing! I love Japanese inspiration! It is so beautiful.

    Love

  • I love Frankie magazine, it’s an Australian one but I think it’s right up your alley. 🙂
PS I’m in love with your Instagram. <3

  • That’s so funny, I was about to post my insane Japanese magazine collection too! Haha. I love love love Sweet. It is sooo thick and the fashion is do-able and affordable! Fudge and Come Home are amazing too, as well as JJ, Liniere, InRed, Mori Girl…ah! I could go on forever…I have so many! I’m sure you read Australian mags like Frankie, Yen, Peppermint and Russh. And I find the Britain has the best craft magazines like Mollie Makes and BBC Homes & Antiques. Oh! And weirdly enough, here in the US, I found that Country Living is actually quite delightful.

  • I really love Frankie magazine (Australian) and Peppermint magazine (also Australian). Both are filled with beautiful photography and funny articles about whats going on in our world.

  • I really like My Home, My Style. Though I’m a decorating magazine junky and will read any of them!

  • Anthology. Country Living. Defunct Domino. This Old House. I love print. Online: Sweet Paul.

  • Oh Comely, it’s British but they don’t sell it in any shops near me (I’m also British, just live in a backwater). I found a copy in Dublin Airport and as soon as I got back from my holiday I subscribed.

  • How can I get my hands on the Come Home mag? Only in Japan? I want!!!

  • Nylon is a must! Great style and photography, as well as music, movie, and book recommendations.
I also used to love an art/graphics magazine called Beautiful/Decay. http://beautifuldecay.com/

Thank you for the post!! 🙂

  • I love pretty much anything Japanese, especially Japanese magazines. There are these two magazines that I read quite frequently(and you can often find translations online) are Japanese music oriented, but the photoshoots with the bands are often very creative and inspiring! xD The name of these magazines are “Duet” and “Wink Up”, the bands are worth checking out too. 😉

  • Lula is a wonderful fashion magazine with dreamy photography. They also have great articles about new artists, up and coming actresses, and fashion mavens. It circulates in the UK but I live in Florida and it’s pretty easy to get a subscription through a middle-man.

(My other favorites are bitch, adbusters, and Bust. The first two are more political, but I’m kinda into that jazz.)
I also make my own zine’s that are all unique. It’s really fun, and if you guys ever run out of ideas for your empire I can say that I would read your magazine if you were to start one!
    Keep on keeping on!

  • I just love the Japanese Street Style!! So inspiring and refreshing. For myself, I study in literature, I would say it even if it doesnt fit, I am in love with the writting of Banana Yoshimoto Kitchen and all of Haruki Murakami, especially the one about Kafka (dont know the title in english, I’m from Quebec).

  • I’m a Japanese girl who
    loves your blog lol ♡

    I often read the magazine
    Fudge which has lots of
    great pictures and tips 🙂

    I also recommend “non-no”
which I often read as well.

  • one magazine i miss the most is Jane. I really love that mag 🙁
gotta love Katrina! and I really want that Fudge magazine. must go to a Japanese market in Costa Mesa tomorrow 🙂

  • Lula magazine is great for inpiration, without telling you what to do or wear. Life is full of too many rules already, without having fashion dictated to us. That’s why I like beautiful mess it makes me want to be creative, like you guys, but in my own way! X

  • I love the British zine Easy Living. It’s always expensive to import it to Germany, but it’s totally worth it! And wow, I will look after Japanese magazines in the future, too. They look really inspiring!

  • I seem to pick up InRed, Sweet and Cancam the most judging by the tower beside my couch, but I think that’s just because they are the most readily available at all the convenience stores in Japan (and where I currently live).

I definitely want to take a look at some of the other ones people have recommended. What a funny coincidence that I live here, but it took a post from across the ocean to get me motivated! ha!

  • Great inspiration! I currently live in Seoul, South Korea which is BOOMING with fashion inspiration;) Let me know if you’d ever like a few Korean magazines to be sent your way!

  • Japanese editions of most magazines are bound to inspire you
We love reading literally every edition of Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Vanity Fair

  • im loving this!the photography is amazing xxxx check out my giveaway- some lovely New Look goodies

  • So happy to see some Japanese magazines here! I have been living in Japan for 3 1/2 years, and plan to return to the US next month. Japanese magazines are so visually appealing and full of content I am actually interested in! My favorite is Randonee, and outdoor magazine for young women, which has fashion tips for outdoor activities and other fun things. http://blog.sideriver.com/randonnee/
As for Japanese magazines in general, I love the “omake” which are free items like bags, pouches, and accessories that come with the magazine.
And MOOKs are really awesome too. From Magazine & Book, they are higher quality magazines made with a specific theme in mind.

The only downside to Japanese magazines is that I can only understand about half of the contents, but the pictures and layouts more than make up for it.

  • I am addicted to photoshop magazines. Check out Photoshop Creative and other mags by Imagine Publishing (a british magazine publisher). They are great not only for inspiration, but also for awesome how-to’s as well if you’re looking to get more into the amazing capabilities of photoshop and what it has to offer (as if you didn’t already have eight million things to divide up your time with!). The possibilities are so endless its wildly overwhelming, but so amazing for getting inspired.

  • Last year I had a subscription to VOGUE. This year I subscribe to SCRAPBOOKS, ETC. and HGTV – they just came out with a magazine and it’s as good as watching their shows.

  • I have just come across your blog via bloglovin and I love it. Look forward to more posts.

  • Haha….I live in Japan and they do have amazing magazines. Those two I love – I always try to score hand me downs. There is an amazing sewing magazine called Cotton Friend that is full of patterns for women and children…awesome.

  • Thanks for this post. I love magazines, especially overseas mags! As others have said, Frankie from Australia is great, as is Yen from Australia. I also love Afar magazine- a fantastic travel magazine out of San Francisco.

  • Fudge is my all time favorite magazine! I bought it in Japan 3 years ago I Really loved it. Then this christmas i was in South Korea and I looked all over the place for the magazine, but i couldn’t find it. When I came back to Sweden we watched photos from the trip and in one picture i saw the magazine right behind me… So close but still so far away 😛
