Today I’m excited to share a recipe for homemade margarita mix. It’s insanely easy to make, with only two ingredients plus water! The difference between homemade mix and something you buy at the store is kind of insane, though. Sometimes the store-bought mixers can be syrupy and gross. Homemade tastes SO much fresher. Totally worth the effort!
Squeeze the lime juice into a bowl or measuring cup. Heat the water and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Let the mixture cool a bit before adding in the lime juice, mix together, and pour into a bottle. Refrigerate the mix for up to two weeks.
It’s perfect to make a big batch before parties. You can easily tweak the proportions to make a large or small batch depending on how many you’ll be serving!
To make a margarita with this, just mix 1 shot of tequila, half a shot of triple sec, add ice, then fill the glass with the mix. It’s super simple! Don’t forget to salt your rim. If you want to see us make a margarita using this mix from start to finish (so you can better see the portions) check the video below.
You can make fun variations by using half grapefruit juice, orange juice or berry juice instead of lime juice. I just tried my first bourbon margarita (just sub bourbon for tequila) and it was really fun and different. Don’t be afraid to experiment, you really can’t mess it up!
Enjoy.xoxo! Elsie
P.S. Here’s the quick little video we made showing exactly how to make your own margarita mix and margarita. So easy you’ll be throwing these together for every party you host!

I’m not really a margarita person but I love the idea of this home made mix; at least I know just how much sugar is in there. :]

Yum!! Margaritas are my absolute favourite. You are so right about store-bought mixes – they never taste as fresh nor as zingy as from the bar! I’m really excited to try this recipe for my friend’s Hallowee party this coming weekend! 😀 xxx
Love it so much! Thanks!
Definitely saving!!

About how many margaritas do you get from the mix??
I would say 5
I love the idea of homemade margarita mix. I’m not a fun of the kind you buy at the store because it’s often gross, like you said. I’ll definitely be giving this recipe a try. Thanks for sharing!

Your FAQ page makes it seem like you still live in Springfield? Also, Aunt Martha’s pancake house is permanently closed.
Oh! Thanks for the heads up. Just needed a few updates.
We’re very sad about Aunt Martha’s. It was one of our most visited spots.

I guess it really depends on the size of your glasses.

Love doing this! I sometimes keep the simple syrup and lime juice separate so that people can make it as sweet or tart as they like. But you’re right, for big parties this is way easier! Sometimes I squeeze in a lemon or lime for good measure too 🙂
That is just the perfect thing for me, thank you for that!

Great! Am I missing something, or does it not say how much mix to add to the margarita? 1 shot tequila, half shot triple sec, and ice. How much mix?
Thanks!
Hi Diana!
I didn’t add a measurement for the mixture because it depends on the size of your glass. After you add the tequila, triple sec and ice you just top it off with mix. Obviously a short glass will produce a stronger drink and a tall glass would produce a lighter drink due to the proportions! I prefer a small glass, like the one pictured.
You can use this exact same method for a blended margarita, just throw it in the blender.

This sounds so great and fresh! I’m planning on soaking fruit in the mix to give it a punch of flavor!
Yes!!! So much better than the premade store bought kind! x

I only use homemade margarita mix. The yellow stuff you buy at the store is too sweet . I’ve never made a mix with just limes, I usually add lemons as well. Try that for a variation!
I’ve also wanted to try doing a watermelon one.

I’m a little confused, how much of the mix do you add to the 1 shot of tequila, 1/2 shot of triple sec and ice? Can’t wait to try this I have a surplus of limes. Thanks!!
Hi Bonnie! Just enough to fill the glass, depending on the size that you use. 🙂 -Jacki

This is so genius!! I could definitely see myself adding some berries into this mix!
Just made these- perfect! Having a great Friday night 🙂
How many margaritas does one batch make?
Great mix! I double up the lime juice, use 2-1/4 cups of water and a bit more than a cup of sugar for a double batch.
I made this and everyone wants to know how I made such great margaritas. Thank you
Tried this beautiful mess for Margaritas and it is great! Made a few batches with lemon juice as well
Thanks
This is now our go-to margarita mix. We refuse to buy store-bought now that we’ve tried this.
Thanks for the recipe. I’ve always just used Bacardi frozen mix but there has been none of that in Pandemic period. It will be nice to have margaritas back in our lives starting tomorrow. It is the only alcoholic beverage my 88 year old mother-in-law will drink.
One minor point—you must be using some kind of pigmy or dehydrated limes. I got 16 ounces of juice from just 8 average size limes.
