Last week I posted a pic on Instagram of some shoes I was glittering for my friend, Stacy. She wanted a pair of glitter booties like this pair but since they were no longer for sale I decided to make her a pair. I recieved tons of questions about the process and supplies. I thought I'd post a quick how-to for those of you wanting to DIY your very own pair of glittery shoes. There are many ways to get this look but here's what I did…
You'll need: A pair of shoes that you want to glitter. Choose a pair with a nice shape. We did a pair of bootie heels and a pair of slip on flats. Use either fabric glue or tacky glue. Glitter (we used the big rainbow glitter from the kids aisle at the craft store! You'll also need a small paint brush.
All you have to do is use a small paint brush to apply a heavy layer of glue to a section of your shoes, cover them in glitter (pour it on over a piece of paper). Allow that section to dry and then do more and more sections until your shoes are completely covered in glitter! After you've worn them a couple times you might have to touch them up with more glitter. It really depends on the pair of shoes and how much they bend when you walk! Beware, glittering shoes is pretty messy. You'll be finding glitter everywhere for a week or two, but I think it's worth it!
Tips: It can be difficult to get the details perfect, like going around laces, getting the tounge of the shoes and creating clean edges. Take your time and after you've finished the entire shoe and it's dry, go back and fix any details that you missed with more glitter! These are a little time consuming, but I finished a couple pairs in one evening.
Here's a tiny peek of Stacy wearing her new glittery shoes! I hope this answers some of your questions. XO. elsie
PS. If you want a less messy method, I did another pair of shoes with glitter paint last year. See them here!

So, so cute! 😀
Luv it!!!!!!
Oh wowzers! So glitzy — so good!
Could you maybe also do an article about braceltes? My friend and I, who are penpals, would love to get matching bracelets, but we want it to mean something, and also be simple, one that could be worn everyday. 🙂 I would LOVE it, if you had any ideas, you are so creative…
LOVE these!
Do you think it’d be worthwhile to put some kind of finish on the top to help the glitter stay put? Something like spray clear coat or a layer of clear-drying glue… (Or would that mess up the flexibility of the shoe?) Just a thought.
I love those! I have never really considered anything glittery to be my style and I really don’t know if I can even pull them off buuuut this DIY kind of makes me want to rethink that and give it a try! Plus, I’m betting my toddler would love getting in on a glittery mess!!
Karissa, Yes! I’ve heard that people use a sealer spray. Would probably be good!
We made these pairs for photos and events, not so much for daily wear. So if you want to wear them a lot, I’d recommend it. XO! Elsie
I love glitter shoes! I think I buy a pair of glitter shoes every season. I should make my own now 😉
So cool love it!
Ooooh I LOVE these! I have been lusting after some glitter shoes for some time, now I can make my own. Thanks Elsie 🙂
Sarah xx
Just did this using Mod Podge on some pleather flats from Payless. I’ve worn them for 5 minutes and it seems where the flats bend, the glitter is starting to peel off in sheets. So upset. Any advice? Should I have used fabric flats instead?
Rebecca,
I think that heavy glue might work a little better than modpodge Maybe try that? Fabric glue or tacky glue. It’s heavy duty!
XO. elsie
Id like to try this on leather. Does the tacky glue or fabric glue work just as good on leather.? Thanks in advance.
a layer of glossy mod-podge on top has increased the glitter life of shoes i’ve glittere’d in the past
such a lovely DIY! I’m loving those bootie heels 🙂
I made some glitter shoes where I mixed a lot of glitter in with mod podge then coated the shoes in them. It worked really well and I didn’t have glitter falling off so there was no need to seal them. Just another way to try diy glitter shoes 🙂
It seems a little tedious, but compleltey worth it to get glittery shoes on a pair that I already own and love!

This is great!!! Such a good idea! Thanks for posting!

These are beautiful! I made a quick pair for a costume once and a heavy duty glue for the glitter paired with a coat or two of glossy Mod Podge on top seemed to do the trick for repeated wears.

Oh my goodness! My day was just made! I’ve been wanting a pair of glittery shoes for the longest time! This looks like the perfect project! Thanks for sharing! <3
This is such a lovely idea. Thanks for sharing your process. I’m thinking about making some hot pink glitter shoes now! 🙂
Oooooh the boots are gorgeous!! Very good idea, thank you for sharing this xx
these are the prettiest shoes ever!
This is a wonderful solution for an older pair of shoes I have. They’re a nice shape and I have considered a DIY project such as this so I can extend their life. I don’t think I’d have to worry too much about glitter getting all over our apartment; my hubby is Asian, so we take off our shoes at the front door, haha.
How lovely! Gosh, they’re really statement shoes! 🙂
Best,
Danielle

A beautiful pair of glitter shoes 😉 I looove them! I did my own pair in red glitter for New Year’s Eve party and they turned out great too 😉
xoxo
Thank you so much, I love it!!
I love this! I’ve been looking for a pair of glitter heels but may just do it myself now, thank you for the tip 🙂
I normally mix glitter with glue and do a few coats. This way the glitter doesn’t fall off all the time; the stuff is sealed in there.
Hi! LOVE THESE. Will have to try soon. You said you’re on Instagram… what’s you Insta-name? I’d love to follow.
♥

This is definitely going on my list of creative projects for January! LOVE IT!
WOW!! I should find the whackest pair of shoes I have and make them sparkle too!
I was planning on doing this anyways, but now I actually know how! Thanks! 🙂

OMG, I want them for so long ago! In every shop I’ve been they’re absolutely expensive and now that I can make some oldies into these babies, I’m into it! (as with the song lyric wall art <3) thanks so much elsie, I love your ideas and the fact you share them with us! xoxo
Another creative and adorable tutorial! I’m totally going to try this with an old pair of Keds that I’ve got lying around. Do you have any tips on how to keep the glitter from falling off?
http://sincerelysammie.com/
We all need a little glitter in our life 🙂 x

LOVE these! Sooo cute. Thank you for all your inspiration Elsie, it is your blog that is motivating me to start my own blog and business! (I am working my way through your e-courses).
Keep up the amazing work!

I quite like the idea of the glitter sticking around for awhile. It’s like finding sand in your pockets after a beach trip — a lovely surprise and a walk down memory lane. 🙂
tK 🙂
Ah, how cute are those shoes! What a fun DIY!

Love the glitter look!
Where are the booty heels you glittered from?
WOw i never thought of actually making glitter shoes…
Thanks!
What a clever idea!! I’m sure I’ll be trying this somewhere down the line. What girl doesn’t swoon for glitter? not THIS girl! http://www.WearAboutsBlog.com
I’ve seen a tutorial where the maker sprayed the shoes with hairspray afterward to keep the glitter from falling off. I think the oxfords you glittered look really sturdy and were probably great for glittering!
these are great!! such a good idea!! 🙂

WOW!
Fun! This is something I will be trying!
http://www.thingsandsuchdesigns.blogspot.com
These are awesome! Glad for some of the comments about sealing them. I was wondering how long the glitter would last. I’m thinking this could be fun for my wedding shoes!
Love those booties! I did this with mod podge for a pair of pumps back in the summer. I sealed it with acrylic spray and they are still holding strong after several days of all day wear 🙂

Cool idea!!

Wow, that’s much easier than I would have imagined. Thanks for the tutorial. Love Stacy King and all the Eisley crew btw.

Maybe if you sprayed them with some lacquer afterwards it would help prevent the glitter dropping off 🙂
PS Come enter my giveaway!
I love this idea! great DIY
I really really love these. I just can’t decide which shoes I want to do this to.
Spraying them with hairspray when you are done will hold the glitter on!
How cute!! What a great DIY…totally trying that soon!!
http://mereandthemr.blogspot.com/
love this! i was thinking of doing this to a pair of my oxfords but with teal glitter, i like the mixed colors here too though!
This is awesome!! My friend actually made me a pair of gold-ish glitter wedges for Christmas.. It’s been a little too chilly/rainy to wear them, but I can’t wait until I can!
I love this DIY! I’ll try this on one of my shoes. A few years ago, I was so lazy that I simply spray painted my shoes with metallic paint. I think this method will be prettier, though.
Awesome! Love it 🙂
New Year Giveaway!
I like the way you show your inspirations!

Love the gilttered boots!

-Sheila
Wow it’s so beautiful!
ROWE
The boots look great! Might just have to try this one…
I’ve glittered shoes and sprayed a finish coat on top, and was very disappointed because it dried very flat and took all the shine from the glitter away! If someone has figured a way to put a finish coat on top, without the same results I’ve had…please share which product you used.
Stunning, I cant wait to do that to a pair of shoes. still searching for a pair that would look amazing glittered up ♥♥
omg this is soooo cuteee… i have to try this… =) thank u for sharing this with us dear…xxx
This is amazing! I’m totally going to try these out for the next wedding I go to.. Thanks for sharing! Hx

Hello! I just made a similar tutorial but with suede pumps instead, here: http://henriemarie.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-make-your-own-glitter-shoes.html
I’m thinking of making another pair that looks just like yours! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful!!
Hello! I did something similar and used a spray on lacquer like what you spray on paintings to finish and protect them. Cheap and easily available at a craft store! Then you don’t have to touch them up so much =) love your beautiful blog!
what if u did a layer of modge podge or a gloss glue over the top? maybe that would help??? idk!!!
OH. MY. GOSH. My daughter stopped dead in her tracks the other day when she saw these shoes on my computer screen. Her birthday is Monday…thinking project glitter shoes is on! Thanks for giving us such amazing DIY projects!
Catherine Denton

If you do this you must leave a trail of glitter, lol. Boyfriend just follow the trail.
this is a great idea! i like it!
if you spray them with a layer of varnish, the glitter won’t come off at all.
they look lovely
love it,
but the glitter falls over time?
xx, Luiza (from brazil!!!!)
so glittery and fun!
I adore those yellow flats you used! Where are they from?? 🙂
The result is wonderful !! love it !!
I’ve been thinking I want to glitter just the heels of one of my pairs of shoes. This just may be the push I need to get it done ~ thanks!
So very cute!!
where did you get those boots?
Love! They look great! I definitely want to do this to a pair of my shoes now…
this is the most perfect diy ever! i have a pair of shoes i can’t wait to do this to 🙂
Cuteness! I would love to try this! and I’m not a huge DIY girl so thats really saying something. Bravo!
If you cover the shoe (after you glitter it) with glue, it might help reduce sparkle-shedding.

Where does one buy that sort of glitter? 🙂 And if there is some on ebay, what name does it usually have?
So excited about these! Having a shoe glittering party next week with some friends 🙂
I so want a brain like yours! Your ideas are always super awesome. These shoes are amazing!
Swoonnnn. Is it possible to be TOO obsessed with glitter?
This DIY made my day … I had been lusting after those shoes as well, now I can make my own!
LOL! My daughter and I will have a blast doing this. Her mom may kill us, but it’ll be worth it. 🙂
this is going on my possible projects list. I had wanted to make glitter shoes and this how-to looks great!
Where did you get the shoes that you glittered yourself? I’m in love with them!

I love them! Glitter shoes are my new obsession! 😛
This is so cool!Gotta try this soon!
I am a burlesque dancer (and mom, and architect), and we do this all the time. They do get scuffed up, so sealing them helps a lot, but still not fool proof. I love the color glitter you used here, it’s beautiful!
I have yet to do this, but this year I’m going to rhinestone a pair of shoes. I’ll try to remember to let you know when I’m done! 🙂

I love your shoes! The bootie heels are fabulous.
Take a look at how I redesigned a pair of mens shoes with gold glitter here:

I would love to know what you think!
These are amazing! Just wondered how much glitter you used for the pair of shoes?
Oh Elsie, these are so pretty.
I would be *so* proud to be the owner of those shoes. I’m itching to try this right now 🙂 xx

I’m so inspired by these shoes….thanks so much for the tutorial on them xo caoimhe
Elsie, where did you get the shoes that you used?
Hey Elsie, where did you get the shoes that you used?
Very good post. Made me realize I was totally wrong about this issue.
I would definitely add a spray sealant! I can’t stand it when that stuff gets all over!! I use to work as a preschool teacher and that was alwayyyys a nightmare to get up off the floor. Fun stuff, but messy.
At first the shoes is so plain and doesn’t have any plus factor, but after you put glitters on it, it turns into something glamorous. I really love this tutorial!
I am making these REALLY soon!!!!!
Sarah @ http://www.allthingsblogs.blogspot.com
I did that many many years ago with the same style shoe only I used red glitter….those shoes were awesome!
wish I still had them 🙁
I love this website! I stumble on it alllll the time and everytime I do I get sucked in! Fab website/blog! =D
Very cool! Does it stay on pretty well? I bet you have glitter everywhere! 🙂 Love your DIY and we’d love to see what else you have in the Trends on taaz.com.
When I made glitter shoes what I did was mix the glitter and then some mod podge together so instead of having to dumb the glitter on the shoe you just painted it on. I’ve never done it this way, but the mixing seemed to help keep the glitter under control ahah 🙂
OMG just tried this out on an otherwise boring pair of short heels and BAM they’re so adorable! I’m covered in glitter but oh-so-happy with the result 🙂 oh and I used a light coat of glossy sealant and it worked wonderfully! Thanks for this great idea!
these tips for helping me save a lot money on buying shoes.
Is that Stacy DuPree?! She’ amazing and the shoes really suit her.
I love it, Love the glitter shoes so much.
I like the butterfly, you have inseirpd me to getting sticking with my children. I was interested to read your old posts on bi-polar. My husband(we are divorcing-not my choice) has a cocaine & alcohol problem but has exhibited typical bi-polar behaviour for years. He won’t do anything about it. I have made a mental note of teens behaviour too as I do worry about my children who seem to suffer with OCD at the moment.Take care. :0)
that’s really cute…and arunod here, i swear the girlies eat the tp, so we’ll be making them soon!i might modify for the doggy bday party for b in a few weeks to make dog bones. i need to think about how i would do it tho. hmmmmmm
Ha!!! This post made me crack up. We have NO glitter in my house. None. I told the dtcireor of my son’s preschool (and old family friend) that I would gladly make a large donation if they could promise me they would never send another project with glitter home again. She declined the offer. I’m glad you were brave. I’ve been better with getting messy, but I still struggle. Good for you!!!
AkuseruLast time we did personalized sniokctgs, we used felt letter cutouts. You can glue them on, but sewing is more permanent. We’ve also done things with plastic canvas candy canes and poinsettias, then sewn those to the sniokctgs.
This is so fun! I will have to use this idea one day. Learned something new too, didn’t know they made glue pads. Is that an easy craft store find?
thanks so much for this. i saw it agessss ago and just the other day found the perfect shoes to glitter up. i am going to try it this weekend!
Where did you get the booties? They’re so cute!
I’m going to do this to refresh a pair of my four year old’s shoes. Thanks for the tips!
love glitter gals…..
want it so bad
