Kinsey and I came up with a super sweet idea for restyling a vintage cardigan! You can make it into a cute jumper. This piece is great for winter layering with ruffle blouses, tights, boots and scarves! Enjoy…
Step 1. We took a cardigan and cut it off right under the sleeves. This project is great for unflattering cardigans or sweaters with a boxy fit. Tip- If you want your jumper to be longer, choose a larger cardigan to start with and then take it in (on step 3).
Step 3. Next, try your jumper on. If it's too big, turn it inside out and stitch in the sides until it fits perfectly!
Step 4. Next, we cut the straps out of the sleeves 1 1/2 inches. We took a simple cotton fabric and sewed a lining for the back side, then flipped it inside out. To figure out how long your straps need to be, just use a piece of yarn to measure from the front to the back of your skirt. Add on 2 inches. Step 5. Last, we sewed the straps on by flipping the end underneath and sewing a square to secure it. We repeated the process on the back and crossed the straps to make an X on the back!
Isn't this the cutest jumper? I love the pattern and texture. Thanks, Kinsey, for sharing this cute idea! Rumor has it that Kinsey is starting her very own blog soon… so I'll be sure to share the link when she's ready. xo. elsie

It’s super cute, but I’m pretty sure it will only look good on sizes, oh, 6 and under! 😉
I love it! That’s too cute. The pattern of the sweater is great and the colours are very Fall-ish, but it makes a much better jumper 🙂
Super cute! 🙂

This is awesome! I wish I could pull something off like this, love that you’re doing all these re-styling posts!

Adorable! I love it!
Such a cute craft idea! My mom has plenty of old sweaters that can be re-made 🙂
Eternally yours,
Stephanie
It’s cute. But honestly, it is a BIT short. I mean, if she bends over to pick something up…the world is gettin’ a look-see. Therefore, impractical for us more modest types 🙂
What a cute idea. This would look great over a simple white collared button down and some mary janes. The pattern looks cozy enough for winter but the short skirt, not so much. haha. Oh well, a thick pair of tights can make any outfit cold weather friendly.

I love the jumper idea! I did a similar project with old Cosby Cardigans but made it into a skirt. I used the excess sleeves as leg warmers, they turned out pretty cute!

erm thats not a jumper.. its an odd dungaree type thingy but a jumper is the Uk word for sweater..
so so so so so cool. I fell cool just looking at it.
Very cute!
(just a one niggle – its not “jumper” it’s a pinafore :). Technically speaking, anywho.
Wow, this is such a cool idea!
Great blog, I’m really glad I found it 🙂
Elsie!!! This is sooooo good! Do you know how many daggy cardis I have lying around? You never fail to impress me, you clever gal. Starting my morning with a bit of ‘mess’ and a cup of tea is the only way these days 🙂
Thanks again,
Toni
Such a creative tutorial! Thanks for sharing.

Where is the original cardigan from? I want this so badly, but cant find a cardigan like yours!

I agree a little with some who commented it fitting smaller figures and being a bit short. However, I think even with my large hips, I can pull this off. You can always get a larger cardigan if you’re worried about it being short. This would also be great layered with some leggings or skinny jeans and a nice pair of boots.
I love it!
Oh and Amanda, I can assure you it looks good on this size 20 also 😉
Fashion has nothing to do with the number on the inside of your jeans (or cardigan)!
Over here in Britain, ‘Jumper’ means ‘Sweater’.. so the idea of turning a Jumper into a Jumper is pretty bizarre haha. Thanks, I love this idea 🙂
I love this but was super confused by everyone calling this a jumper. In the UK a jumper is just another word for a sweater, usually knitted. We’d call this a skirt or a dress, maybe a dungaree. But you learn something new everyday. Happy sewing everyone.
Great idea!!

how i made mine! 😀
so cute! I can’t wait to do this… Next time I’m thrifting, I’ll keep an eye out for a cardigan to use! <3

Very funky!! Great Idea! If only I had a cardi as cool as that to transform! 🙂
Just a question, will this work on a knitted sweater? I mean I know it would probably but I don’t want it to completely unravel if I cut it.
This is adorable. So glad I stumbled on this blog!
