Hello there A Beautiful Mess readers, I'm Emma, Elsie's sister and the gal behind Food Coma. At Elsie's wedding last week I had the opportunity to try Nutella for the first time. Now I'm obsessed.
So I've been trying to dream up different ways to use this magical new-to-me spread and I thought that in between two cookies might be the perfect place for Nutella.
Along with on top of toast. Like, every morning.
You can enjoy these cookies in the late afternoon along with some coffee or in the evening with some milk while watching the latest episode of Glee. (That's right-I'm a Gleek, and I'm not sorry!)
Nutella Sandwich Cookies, makes 10-12.
Ingredients: 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon (aluminum-free) baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and plenty of Nutella.
Cream together the butter and sugars, stir in egg and vanilla. Now mix in flour, baking powder and salt until just combined. The batter should be crumbly and you will probably need to use your (clean) hands to combine it a bit more to form a dough ball. Cover in plastic wrap and place in the freezer for 20 minutes.
Now form into small round disks, about 2-3 inches in diameter and uniformly thick. You want your cookies to all sort of match each other in size because you will be placing one of top of another to form sandwich cookies. Bake at 350 F for 15-18 minutes, allow to cool completely on a cooling rack before adding filling. Once cool, spoon a couple of tablespoons of Nutella on one cookie and place another on top. Devour, and don't apologize.
xo. Emma

and i will probably be buying nutella and making these tomorrow 🙂
These look delicious! I love nutella on toast, and on pancakes, and maybe just eaten straight out of the jar…
I’ve loved Nutella since I was a kiddo!! My favorite midnight snack!!! My boyfriend had not had it until recently, and he can’t live without it! Nutella is always in stock in our pantry!
I first tried nutella in front of the Eiffel Tower and it was definitely love at first bite. *wink* these cookies look soooo good, I am absolutely making them soon! :]
Yum. There are all sorts of magical nutella recipes on pinterest lately… make your own nutella, and then use it to make brilliant cookies (like these!) or fill doughnuts, or add to brownies… it’s addicting!
You think Nutella cookies are divine?! You need to try a Nutella hot chocolate!! The coffee shop I used to work at would make them for special customers only……they were AMAZING!!
Yum yum!

“At Elsie’s wedding last week I had the opportunity to try Nutella for the first time.”
YOU MEAN AMERICA HAS NO NUTELLA??!! Oh my.
Mmmmmmmmmm these look so good!
But Emma, how has it taken you this long to try the awesome that is Nutella??
x
In Lucca (Italy) I had a thin, crepe- style pancake with nutella in the centre. Lovely , except the girl had put so much nutella in it was sickly. Once I had removed about half a jar, it was divine. I have always loved nutella and on a bad day a teaspoon is just the most perfect sweet treat!! I also love a drizzle of warm nutella on vanilla icecream. Maybe I should get out more!!
Nutella is AMAZING with those Pepperidge Farms flat-bread rounds. I ate those every day when I was in Ireland.
Nutella is the glue that holds main-land Europe together 😀
Have you tried it with bananas? Best thing is to make a slit in the banana with the skin on and put a couple of teaspoons of nutella in the middle. Wrap the whole thing in foil and bake in the oven or place on the bbq.. best thing ever!
oh yum! I’m trying this recipe today! I love eating nutella with bananas- on toast!
Oh man! Anything with nutella is amazing!!
You should go to foodgawker.com and search nutella. There are SO many nutella recipes on there!! It’s amazing!!!

Nutella is from italy! Nutella rocks!
mmmmm…nutella cookies 🙂 we love nutella so much we even named one of our chickens after it. i’d love to try a toasted marshmallow nutella shake!
I just keep scrolling up and down between the 3 photos. Scrolling up.. scrolling down.. Mmmm.
yummy! I might as well try these.
Ahahah! So happy you’re in love with it! As an italian I can say that we enjoy it almost in everything such as bread, cookies or croissants…even if I usually taste it on my fingers 😉
Try this: Nutella tart…I bet you’ll adore it!
xo
nutella is so good! lol i wanna make these!
Last week I had the same revelation. I made some shortbread cookies with nutella in the middle. Brilliant. Yum!
Nutella has been feeding generations here in Greece (well before that we had Merenda which is local and just as good but Nutella grew sooooo big). It’s our favorite topping for crepes (thin pancakes) either with crushed almond/biscuit (p’tit beurre kind) or banana bits… The latest one we call it Chocobanana. Either or Nutella is divine!
They look lovely Emma, and the photos are beautiful too, great styling 🙂
YUM! I can’t believe you just tried Nutella. You have years of catching up to do!
This looks too cute to it!! I have a feeling this post is going to get a lot of Pinning attention!
Hmm I love nutella
Nutella is the best! Thanks for the fabulous recipe, can’t wait to try it.
would love to make these…they look so yummy!!! Is there a Vegan alternative to the ingredients?? Love Nutella…my husband is Italian so we’ve been eating it for years…so good!!
These look so good! I have sworn off Nutella forever after having eaten it for 2 months straight on a backpacker’s budget, but perhaps I will break that to make these. Random fact of the day: Nutella is to Europeans what peanut butter is to North Americans. It’s almost impossible to find peanut butter overseas!
these look Amazing!!!
http://kimchicsisters.blogspot.com
Looks so yummy. I’m allergic to peanut butter and have heard that Nutella is a good alternative, but I’ve never tried it. I think I need to bite the bullet and buy some. And cookies.
they look adorable and delicious!
theArtofbeingFashionable
Aaaaand I happen to have a jar of Nutella handy. Well, I usually have a jar of Nutella handy. But anyway. . . 🙂
Nutella, on vanilla cookies, plus a glass of pineapple juice. The tang and the chocolate go together so well!
Yummy! Nutella + cookies sounds amazing. I am pretty much obsessed with Nutella!
these are so dang cute! i’ve been craving a delicious cookie all day…
oh yum, Nutella! My must have item when I travel somewhere I know won’t have them. I can usually eat this stuff straight out of the jar (which is bad, I know!). The cookies look delicious though. Will give them a try soon!
Can’t believe you’ve never experienced Nutella before, here in France it’s included as one of the main food groups 😉 These look scrummy!! XX
It s never to late to try new things. At first I was surprised that Americans don’t live on Nutella 😉 but I guess we Europeans don’t know all your products either.
If you love Nutella you will absolutely love Hanuta. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanuta
and Duplo bar http://www.chocolatemission.net/2010/03/march-28th-ferrero-duplo.html and Kinder Shoko Bons.
i’m from europe. i eat nutella, every day, all day.
nutella is a staple in my house!
my favorite things with nutella are: pretzel sticks dipped in nutella, toasted banana and nutella and nutella stirred into warm milk on a cold day.
I baked these today, Emma, and they turned out DIVINE. Nutella is common here in Australia but I’ve never thought to use it as a filling for cookies! Thanks for the recipe!

It’s really funny to read that someone tried Nutella the first time, when we here grow up with this and are DYING to try some of your yummi food you have in the states. Emma I’d love to see a recipe for bubble tea because this is something we can’t get over here and whenever Elsie mentions bubble tea, I really really wanna try some…
Sandy
Nutella and Banana Bread anytime! Also great on crepes, and over fruit. So versatile! Thanks for the new recipe!
I was introduced to Nutella by a roommate in college who came from Germany. She said we it was to die for & she was right! We loved to eat it with triscuit crackers. It was the perfect blend of salty & sweet.
That looks very awesome! Goin to make these this weekend!! xoxo
Nutella is one of the best things ever! I love it on oatcakes, but Pizza Express (a chain here in the UK) now does its dipping Dough Balls for dessert with a dish of Nutella. Soooooo gooooooood!

Nutella is so so good in a crepe with some strawberries. It will have you at hello.

nutella and cream cheese grilled sandwiches. so. good.
Nutella cookies! That just sounds so amazing. I love all things Nutella. Thanks so much for this recipe.
That and a cold glass of milk surely is a perfect combination for a snack that is not only easy to make but also fantastic to share with friends! Another thing, it’s a fine pick to make the cookie with simple flavors, so you could appreciate the flavor of both cookie and the spread itself.
yummm so trying this!
i think i just found my new favourite blog. wowwwwww
Mascarpone( it’s a cheese) and nutella. put in a creap. This is the italian style
Oh my! I’m making these today!!! Thank you!

ever try Justin’s hazelnut butter? I do believe it’s a bit healthier, and it’s just as yummy.
try nutella with potato chips or nutella and pik-nik!
Nutella is one of my favourite things… I know I won’t get a chance to make these for at least another 5 days (and I want them now!). I wonder if sandwiching the Nutella between 2 Amaretti biscuits would work?
Nutella is the most delicious and favorite breakfast! ahah
Yum. If I hadn’t just scarfed down the whole jar of $18 chocolate covered peanuts I got from the girlscouts, I’d make these right. stinkin. now.
Nutella = one of my favorite things. Period! :0)
read this recipe a month ago. might hafta buy 2 jars of nutella now to curb the craving before i make the cookies :o) looks DELICIOUS!!!!
I’m aghast that you’d never had nutella. It gives energy to think and do. My eating method of choice is a family sized jar and a spatula, but I may have to give these cookies a try as well..
http://www.theblossomshed.blogspot.com

Oh, no! I should NOT have found this xD I can do nothing but head to the nearest shop and do some ingredient-shopping 😛 Unfortunately Nutella is soo expensive in Finland, so i will go for a cheaper option instead 😉 But i suppose, i will re-do this recipe after returning back to UK, where i study. 🙂 Argh. This may have been a mistake…
Merry x-mas!
I have a deep nutella love! So will defo be making these 😉

With Nutella, I don’t need bread, biscuits, milk or bananas. Only a spoon .
In Belgium everyone eats Nutella, I always find it funny when I read about Americans trying it for the first time. When my mom was living in Texas it was Nutella she missed Nutella the most. ♥-Axelle

There is protein in there right?
Those look amazing. When I was working in France, me and the other girls all got a giant tub each, and used to sit around dipping oreos in…when we ran out of oreos ‘nutella fingers’ quickly substituted 😀
