love the tree house and idea! but where are you? do you want suggestions near seattle?:)
I think for Montreal(quebec, Canada) The more crazy place would be the orange Julep. It’s the achitexture of the 60? and no orange would ever grow here. It’s a udge orange where you can buy orange juice. The juice is not my favorite but it’s something to see!
Bonne journée Elsie
Elsie, did you see El Cosmico in Readymade? It’s in Texas and looks killer.
http://www.elcosmico.com/
Ever been to Eureka Springs? It is my favorite place on the map, and it isn’t too far from you. There are lots of really neat sites there….even a few places featuring treehouses.
Have you seen this website – and her pictures from her road trip. they are beautiful.

Fun! The coolest place we happened upon on our honeymoon roadtrip was Roanoke, VA. It was a quirky town tucked in the mountains. There were fun shops and GREAT coffee places. We stayed on the east coast (it was fall and beautiful!). It’s also on the Appalachian trail, which is gorgeous and full of fun stops.
Happy Planning!
Other good kitschy resources for planning road trips are Roadside America (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/)
and Diner City (http://www.dinercity.com/)
Now I desperately want to plan a road trip.
EEk! I commented once, not sure where it went! You should definitely consider coming to the town I grew up in! Mountain View, Arkansas! It’s got all kinds of things to do! There’s the Folk Center (http://www.ozarkfolkcenter.com/) where they teach you how to make candles and soaps and etc the old way. The are places like this to stay (http://www.whiterivertreehouse.com/page2.htm) and the whole down-town is full of quirky little shops, and even an old fashioned soda fountain! And people come from all over to play music in the court square. It’s not far from Blanchard Springs(http://www.fs.fed.us/oonf/ozark/recreation/caverns.html) where there’s a lot of hiking and stuff to do too!
i just saw this on yahoo:

got one for you Elsie – might not be kitchy enough for you but I am planning a fun little getaway with Brad here…..

Queen Califa’s Magical Circle Garden is tucked away in a public park in Southern California. It is completely mosaic and made by a fantastic French woman. It truly is a magical place!
http://www.queencalifia.org/
you have to stay at wigwam village. there is one in kentucky and a couple of more in the states. here’s the kentucky link:
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2106
Boy Elsie, I have just what you’re looking for! As a native Texan, I’m very proud of my state, and wanted to recommend Marfa, TX! It has a dreamy campsite complete with vintage trailers, yurts, teepees and tents to camp in – all for a reasonable price and in the beauty of the Texas desert! http://www.elcosmico.com/trailers.php
Marfa is also known as a burgeoning music community – my friend has a music venue there that used to be a funeral parlor – kitsch heaven! http://www.padresmarfa.com/index.php?p=1_14_ABOUT-PADRE-S
And Marfa is also the home of the mysterious Ghost Lights – unexplained ethereal lights in the air at night, which bring in big crowds – free entertainment! I hope you’ll consider Marfa on your road trip list! 🙂
Such great suggestions! I don’t have any to add, but I can’t wait to check some of these places out. Laura Elaine, Marfa sounds awesome!
the tree house looks fun!!
i really. really. really. want to go to salvation mountain!
I remember seeing the dinosaurs in the movie The Wizard with Fred Savage & Jenny Lewis. I always wanted to go as a kid but never got the chance. Maybe if I move back to CA I can go!

Oh and we have some good thrifting here! And you would want to come here if your ever in Clermont,Fl! http://www.myspace.com/paperdolls4ever They have a myspace and a facebook!
You’re going to have to come north to the Banff, Alberta area for this one… it is my most favorite place to take a break (and I feel SO lucky that it is so close to home!). Sundance Lodges has trapper’s cabins and tipis to stay in. It is f-a-n-flippin-t-a-s-t-i-c!
http://www.sundancelodges.com/about.html
How about staying in a tree house sphere??
http://www.freespiritspheres.com/index.htm
Swing by Vancouver on your way and visit me 🙂
If you are in Northern California you should visit the Redwoods! You can drive through a tree (http://redwoods.info/showrecord.asp?id=2464), then head to the nearby Oregon Caves (http://www.nps.gov/orca/index.htm), and stay at the old lodge (http://www.oregoncaves.com/oclodge.htm) that has the Fountain Cafe, which is still the 1930’s style fountain shop.
I loved all these places, probably because my sister and I grew up watching the Gnome Mobile too much. 🙂 Good luck on your search!
So cool that you featured The Shady Dell. I’m from Phoenix, AZ and have stood at The Shady Dell before in the Manor (w/ fiance)and the Airfloat(for a girls slumber party)and it was lots of fun.
When I drove cross country on my move to CA my Mom and stopped at a bunch of little trading posts in Oklahoma, like this one
http://www.pawneebills.com/
Great local art and history all wrapped up in some incredible little shops! We stayed in a Marriott (ha) but there are some villages in the areas, I’ll post links if I can dig some up! Have an amazing time planning your trip 🙂
I live in So Cal and am excited to check out that place, as I have never heard of it!!!!!

Looks like very fun!
Hey Elsie you should check out good ole’ Louisville, Kentucky. We usually have awesome bands that come through, one of the biggest skate parks in the country , Bardstown Rd. which has so many little shops to check out, such as “The Makery” http://themakery.bigcartel.com/
“Why Louisville Store”
http://www.whylouisville.com/
“Ear x Tacy” a awesome music shop that features free bands all the time (Watson Twins were just there)http://www.earx-tacy.com/home.htm
So many more beatiful things to see.
If you find your way through Louisville, KY – definitely stop in Lynn’s Paradise Cafe. The food is amazing and you would love the gift shop. They just had prom night where the staff and guests can wear their prom best. You also can have breakfast in your pajamas (they encourage it!)
http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com
Okay, so this isn’t a place to eat or sleep, but their gift shop and cafe is completely awesome and the overall experience was so, so memorable.

The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.
It’s my favorite museum ever- EVER.
Just check out Bergdorf Goodman’s windows dressed with it’s exhibits (there’s yarn sculpture in there!)

There are so many fun and unusual places in the US. I totally recommend a treehouse stay.
Big sur has this awesome treehouse: http://www.flickr.com/photos/darkeningofthelight/2824174844/
and the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo is a bit pricey but worth checking out the theme rooms:
Gypsy Rock: http://www.madonnainn.com/rooms/142.php
Old Mill: http://www.madonnainn.com/rooms/206.php
Vous:
http://www.madonnainn.com/rooms/169.php
Its a bit pricey, but its fun just to click on the room pictures and enjoy the eye candy. So over the top!!!
I sadly dont have any wild and crazy spots here in Phoenix,AZ but if you ever get a chance go to Sedona Arizona! It the most magical and inspirational places ive ever seen. Its my oasis and i would recommend it to you in a heart beat.
How fun! We are planning a road trip for our honeymoon to see some of the sites I have never seen in northern California!
My family came upon the Grand Canyon Caverns by happy mistake on our way home from the Grand Canyon a few years ago…definitely one of the highlights of our trip. It’s on historic Route 66. Dinosaurs out front and everything…and the caverns are SO neat!
http://www.gccaverns.com/
i NEED to go to salvation mountain! i have no excuse, it’s only a couple hours away!
If you’re coming all the way out to California, do not skip the Mendocino Coast! Besides the awe inspiring natural beauty- it is chaulk full of inspiring little whimsical treasures to discover. Stay at this little hotel in Mendocino called the blackberry inn- it is designed to look like an old western town and each room is a different shop- the saloon, the sherriff station, the bank, hat shop etc…it is awesome! Head slightly north to Fort Bragg and treasure hunt at Glass Beach. The beach is made up almost entirely of multi-colored sea glass- the site was once home to 3 or 4 “town dumps” in the 40’s, but nature had reclaimed the once garbage, and is now absolutley beautiful. You can spend hours searching through all the soft glass and occassionally find some pretty crazy stuff. There is also a completely magical, incredible hidden sink hole in this area– appearing out of nowhere in a mass of forest on the coast, there are ropes tied for climbing down, a sandy beach at the bottom with a cave that goes out to the sea and waves bring really magical treasures in. you could spend a whole day here but this place is a secret! message me, or try to dig around any you might find it!
Lynn’s Paradise Cafe in Louisville, Kentucky has your name all over it, Elsie! When I went to college in Kentucky, my friends and I used to go there all the time!
It’s like being in a really, happy, colorful dream…. And there are buckets of dinosaurs on your table to play with while you wait.
http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/
Love your Blog ^^;
In Atlanta they have this place called little five points where they have very cute vintage shops and they this big skull head place that is a restaurant called the vortex.
love you!!! and you are cute with your butterfly……
This place is really fun, went summer before last. And you can stay in a tree house there to.
http://www.cypressvalleycanopytours.com/
I forgot for sure, but i’m pretty sure it was in New York, i saw it on the travel channel. it is a hotel that is based on the dewy decimal system! each floor is a different section like literature, etc. each room has a different theme too! the hotel is called the library. thought you mite like that.
ahhhhhh!
like im not totally taking my kids to salvation mountain this spring!
I love kitschy roadtrips too and this is my favorite place to date.
http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/
Amazing food, too! 🙂
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/dino/dino2.html
someday i would like to go to a dinosaur motel such as this one!!
the winchester house in san jose, ca
http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/index.cfm
and the dinosaur statue near palm springs, ca
http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM62QH
The best place/restaurant I have EVER been to is Lynn’s Paradise Cafe in Louisville, KY.
The decor is fantastically kitschy and the food, especially breakfast, is down home deliciousness. There are mannequin legs clad in crazy tights coming out of the wall, a cute gift shop, a map with dots from visitors, toys games and dinosaurs on the table, and all sorts of other wackiness. It’s been on throwdown with bobby flay on the food network too!
Louisville also has the Slugger Museum, and the big horse park, along with an art museum, and the contemporary hotel which is a whole other story. Also if a band plays at the louisville palace museum you like go there it’s gorgeous! I saw deathcab and ra ra riot there with cold war kids last summer.
http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com
I live in Belgium, so my kinda nearby dream quirky location is Hotel Fox in Denmark. Every room is decorated by a different artist. I love the rooms called Wa, Dryad, Harmony’s helm and Sleep seasons. http://www.hotelfox.dk/
Other than that, I love Antwerp (the city I live in), and I wouldn’t mind going on a holiday/roadtrip in my own city.
Eat at Satchel’s!! Gainesville, FL. The best pizza & salad you will ever have. Not to mention a junk museum and awesome artwork! 🙂
http://www.satchelspizza.com/
Well if you ever go to Wisconsin there are two different spots I think you would adore. First in Hayward, WI there is the world’s largest fiberglass sculpture. Its a fish, totally kitschy and I think you could take some AWESOME pictures there http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2244
Second spot I havent visited myself but I have wanted to for a very long time now, the house on the rock. I have heard great things about it! http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2254
one more that’s pretty cool, it’s in california:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watts_Towers
http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/index.cfm
Elsie, if you come to Australia with Mr. Larson, you HAVE to take a road trip to Hervey Bay (in Queensland) and go whale watching. The whales come right up to the boat and oogle you, and the mama whales bring their babies in too and they play right there in front of you…so sweet 🙂 Don’t worry, the boats are BIG and very safe. If smaller is more you, you can take a sunset dolphin cruise and watch the dolphins ride the bow waves of the sailboat. Here’s a link for you to explore if you are interested…
http://www.qldtravel.com.au/hervey-bay-whale-watching.html
And you have to visit Fraser Island, too. I have pics on my blog. It’s so beautiful!
Karen xx
This is off-topic of road trip sites, but I just ran across this site http://dailysquee.com/ and didn’t know if you’d seen it. It’s pictures of baby animals–fawns, foxes, pandas! It reminded me of you!
fun idea! if you ever go to pocatello, idaho, you might love this place: http://www.blackswaninn.com/ it is total kitsch and totally awesome! we stayed in the sea cave suite but they are all really fun! have a blast on your trip 🙂
My husband and I just recently started planning our dream road trip. I can’t wait to see what you find!!
I second Laura Elaine’s suggestion of the Marfa Prada!! Great girls think alike and share names (I’m an Elaine, too!). It’s an awesome exhibit and in such a beautiful location. It is a definite must see for anyone visiting Texas (but especially us natives).
did anyone say cathedral of junk Austin? sooooo amazing!
http://www.travelistic.com/video/show/8735/Tour-of-the-Cathedral-of-Junk—Austin,-TX
That place looks to magical!

Three of my friends and I took a road trip from California to Seattle this last summer and one of the funniest places we stopped was http://www.voodoodoughnut.com/ You could get married there if you wanted!
this might be common knowledge but on one of the roads entering the Grand Canyon is a campsite designed like the flintstones. They have buildings inside the camp ground that look like the flintstones buildings and dinosaur bones laying everywhere. It’s kind of quirky and fun!
There’s an ostrich farm (http://www.beachcalifornia.com/ostrich.html) in Buelton, CA which is pretty cool. You can feed them for $1! Also, it’s not too far from the quaint Scandinavian town of Solvang (http://www.solvangusa.com/) which is adorable and touristy.
just saw this article on yahoo.
http://travel.yahoo.com/p-interests-31397755
Some house themed spots: Coming to California? There’s the Winchester Mystery House (crazy doors to nowhere, bizarre staircases) http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/thehouse.cfm OR The Madonna Inn, where every single room has a different theme (here’s the ‘rooms’ page: http://www.madonnainn.com/features.php You might like ‘swiss belle’ or ‘dot & daisy’ or ‘fabulous fifties’) Finally, Hole N The Rock in Utah…a house inside rock http://www.theholeintherock.com/photos.html
Roadside America – it doesn’t get any kitchier. This is a miniature indoor village in PA with a model train that runs through and there’s all kinds of interactive parts. PLUS there’s a Pennsylvania Gift Haus right there.
http://bit.ly/bPkxNG
And if you’re so inclined…Crystal Cave isn’t far away. I remember them having delicious ice cream.
http://www.crystalcavepa.com/
I saw that some people already posted on the Madonna Inn… if you get the chance you have to go. It is unbelievable. The guys’ bathroom has a big waterfall they pee into… we always make a boy check and then sneak in when it is unoccupied :). They have an entire pink ballroom… all pink!
we stayed at the metro hotel & cafe in petaluma it was great and it’s right near wine country!
haha i was also going to suggest the shack up inn… plenty of character plus lots of musical heritage!
Cool! Did you meet Leonard Knight? The man who built the first place (Salvation Mountain)? Here’s a facebook fan page about him http://www.facebook.com/pages/Leonard-Knight/109805155092?ref=search&sid=1056030032.943991284..1
If you are interested in Tree Houses…this one looks amazing (totally regret not going there myself when we lived there….hoping to move back SOON!) It’s in Oregon too…which is truly one of the most inspiring places and has tons of funkiness and charm along with breathtaking beauty.
http://www.treehouses.com/treehouse/treesort/brochure0.html
i’m going to eureka springs over spring break because i’ve heard such great things about it. AND we’re staying in a treehouse 😀
all these comments make me interested in marfa, though… 🙂
head to Cali and rent a VW bus.

Hey Elsie,
Have you ever seen the movie Elizabethtown? Kirsten Dunst’s character organizes an AMAZING road trip at the end of the movie and I’ve always wanted to do the same thing.
She has some really cool (and actually existing) stops. I’d say you should check it out.
Try going to Mackinac Island in Michigan, it’s a cute little island where everyone has to either ride a bike or take a horse carriage, you can even bike all the way around the beautiful island in just a couple of hours! Another place to visit is Nashville, Indiana. We stayed at the Artist Colony Inn where all of the furniture is all handmade by Amish carpenters.

OH, and I forgot to tell you, the Grand Hotel is the same hotel that they used in a couple of pretty famous movies, the most notable is in the movie, Somewhere in Time.
http://www.grandhotel.com/index.html
If ever in “Near North” Ontario, take a trip to Midlothiam Ridge to see the landscape sculptures and Castle built by Peter Camani.

It is WAY cool!
kind of trashy but still fun…
teepee ‘motel’

Yay for AZ and the Shady Dell!

that tree house is everything that is wonderful about life.
Also in Oregon there are McMenamins, old schoolhouses turned into a cool, gothic, funky brewery and hotel. Amazing beer, cigar bars, firplaces, library rooms and even a turkish bath (soaking tub) in the old cathedral. Also there’s usually live music in the several bar rooms.
Portland…

If you are ever near New Orleans you have to check out the Abita Mystery House. It’s an hour outside of the city, but worth the drive. The owner is a folk artist and the “museum” is a combination of collections of found objects, and his projects. It is completely over the top and amazing!
http://abitamysteryhouse.com/
I think you have mentioned coming to Houston before(not sure) but if you haven’t already you could visit the Orange show. It was one man’s dream to build a theme park klind of like Disney world or at least his idea of it and on a much smaller scale. I don’t think his dream was ever really fully realized but it is a very cook and kitschy little place. They used to have a tape or cd you could buy and play in your car to take you on a tour of all the other funky kitschy places across Houston. Sadly I think a few of them are gone. I know for a fact that one of them burned down (set a blaze on purpose…uck cruelty) but he may have rebuilt,I can’t remember.
This is a really interesting little gem of a place with many other ideas to go along with it.
Hi Elsie,
I don’t know if it is too late to comment, but if you happen to drive up to Wisconsin, you need to see the house on the rock.
http://www.thehouseontherock.com/HOTR_AttractionMain.htm
It is an amazing house filled with such eclectic, extraordinary treasures–it is really hard to describe this place. This person took some great photos to show the unique collections, click on them to make them larger. The automated instruments are pretty fantastic.
http://www.pbase.com/ysic/the_house_on_the_rock
the madonna inn!!!!! all the rooms are themed differently, so amazing!!
http://www.madonnainn.com/index.php
Hey Elsie! Last Thanksgiving hubby and I went roadtripping from San Francisco (where we live) to Moab (Utah). There is a very kitschy and incredible roadside attraction there: a house inside a rock! Check this out:
http://www.theholeintherock.com
The house is kept as a museum and everything there was made by the owners, in a very weird 60s vibe. Plus, there is a cute love story behind it!
xoxo
Viv
It’s in the butt of the world but it’s amazing…
http://bligoo.com/media/users/2/108858/images/public/14089/C_Users_MAMA_Desktop_Hotel_Baobab_Fachada_Hotel_Baobab.jpg
It’s like this place hotel in Huilo Huilo, Chile (South America) and the cool thing is that the hotel is like a waterfall… I know you’ll never go there but it’s so cool I just had to share.
I love road trips! We have been on so many, but after living in Northern California for the past few years I honestly think the coolest places I’ve been are all here! If you take the 101 North from San Francisco you drive through some really rad little towns and past some amazing little “tourist traps”…a burl carved Shrek anyone? I think you would fancy the “One Log House” and the little playground surrounding Confusion Hill:
http://www.confusionhill.com/
And then you can continue North on the 101 to go through Humboldt County which has some of the most epic beaches I have ever seen and the amazing vibes of the Redwood trees galore! And further on down the road you’ll come to the Trees of Mystery, which you cannot miss…there is a GIANT Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox! Check it out!:
http://www.treesofmystery.net/
Peace. Love. Safe and Happy travels.

we didn’t stay there on our road-trip but it looked super cute.
camp in the redwoods, it will change your life (it did mine).
scream the theme song to full house as you drive across the golden gate bridge, so much fun you will die of laughter.
here’s my photos if you want to know where anything is just ask.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarajean/sets/72157622056446295/
Salvation mountain! WOW I want to go there!
The only kitchy places I can think of would be Dollywood and Graceland! I’d love to go to both! Might be going to Vegas at some point this year 😉
a rainbow hotel room, an airplane room and near the crazy House on the Rock, check out the Don Q Inn in Dodgeville, WI. even if you just visit their website, it’s worth it: http://www.fantasuite.com/
happy travels! xoxo, juliette
the Madoonna Inn in san luis obispo CA 110 rooms all theme close to the beach very fun
Hi Elsie! Love your blog! Check out the Madonna Inn! 110 differently themed rooms! So fun! 😉

My husband and I will HAVE to visit the treehouses. Awesome!!
Hotel Vendome in Prescott, Arizona. It’s right off of the square (which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL)
http://www.sharlot.org/img/wm_images/pb040f7i67.jpg — before!
http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/01/55/bd/f2/hotel-vendome.jpg — after!
And it’s said that one of the hotel rooms is haunted! Idk if you’re up for it, but I think it’d be an interesting little adventure. and not to mention, there is an ADORABLE coffee shop right next to it called Cuppers- http://www.prescott-good-eats.com/image-files/cuppersext.jpg

I just came across this and loved your idea of focusing on a different aspect for each day of the week! Thank you so much for sharing this and allowing us to copy it as well! I think this will be a lovely addition to our morning prayer time as well!
I’ve been to Tree House Point in WA, it’s a great place.
These are great places for road trips and vacations! Right now, I’m still thinking of a place to spend my dream vacation, but I want that place to be serene, romantic and perfect for couples.
I hope you had a ton of fun on your road trip. Honestly, the stuff between the start and finish lines are often more interesting, if you take the right part. The local stuff you don’t get to see from riding a plane is definitely enjoyable. The adventure of it all makes a road trip very memorable.
