Today I want to use my ’10 things’ to celebrate the most inspiring and beautiful woman in my life… Β
10 things I love because they remind me of my mom:Β
1. Mary Poppins.
it’s magical. my mom loves Julie Andrews!
2. cute 80s glasses… she had tons of cute pairs when i was a kiddo.
i like these fromΒ cloud nine vintage.
3. color charts…
she’s always making them… i guess it’s the art teacher in her? π
4. choosing patterns…
she made emma & i lots of cute matching dresses. we made gifts together and (my favorite) handmade dolls.
5. puppies!!!
yes, my mom loves puppies more than anyone i know! especially these pups…
6. coffeeeeeeee.
we always get coffee! (i found some really cool ‘latte art’ today. i’m a little obsessed!)
outer space & scary bunnies? amazing.
eeek! does anyone know how difficult it is to make these? i would looove to learn one day. π
7. the music of my childhood… i don’t know if i’ve mentioned this on here before, but my parent’s sort of skipped the 80s and 90s with music & movies. we were raised on a lot of old movies and music from the 60s and 70s, but mainly just one amazing band…
π
8. games…
(all of the cool ones!)
9.Β Grandma Moses
she was a prolific painter and her story is amazing. my mom has continually encouraged me to draw inspiration from her work. parent’s often give the most insightful advise….. i have a running list of all of the insane business advise my dad has given me over the years (in the best way!).
anyway… i am always up for a mini art history lesson from my mom… she’s wonderful like that. π
10. her own paintings.
my mom is one of my favorite painters in the world. it’s overwhelming how much great work she is producing right now, especially in the past year.
here are two of my recent favorites…
i love you, mom.
thank you for teaching us, letting us make mistakes, building forts and letting us get messy with paint while dressing up like peter pan characters… i guess we will never know how life would have been different without you because every detail of our lives is a result of so much love, support and nurtured creativity. you are beautiful and loved.
happy mother’s day.

This is such a sweet and heart-felt Mother’s Day post.
That was beautiful Elsie… I love that first painting of your mothers. It looks like the ocean with a boat to the left.
Beautiful and touching post!!
we must be about the same age because those things were all present in my childhood too!
this was SO super sweet!
i’m an 80s child and my parents raised me on the beatles too =)
This is so sweet!! π Your Mom seems like she is so lovely π
Actually the only hard one to do would be the bunny. The rest are just “etching” with milk microfoam dots and drawing it with the end of a drink thermometer.
elsie, here in australia you can buy “stencils” from homewares stores, or the supermarket. have a hunt around and you should be able to find some in the states. they are a really easy way to start off making designs on top, and you can get some really awesome ones. you lay the stencil on the top of your mug, sprinkle coffee or cinnamon or drinking chocolate (or whatever you like) over the stencil, then remove it. hey presto, you have a cool design! hope this helps π

elsie that is such a nice post! happy mother’s day to your mom!
I have a grandma moses print in my sons room. it was a gift from the in-laws, and i’ve just recently started loving it…after sitting in there every evening giving my son his last bottle before bed. i stare at it and come up with a new story every night. creativity comes…
Hi-Ho Cherry-O!!! Oh my goodness! That was the best game.
Really sweet.
What an awesome tribute! Just lovely…
I love reading about you + your mom. She sounds amazing! Just like you π
thanks goes to you Elsie- This brought so many wonderful memories and tears to my eyes. My life has been so enriched by you all. You, my daughter, are my inspiration. Thank you! I am so proud of you!
I love you sooooooooooooooooo much!
Mom
What a lovely post! My mom likes Julie Andrews too. I stumbled up on this book and gave it to her for Mother’s Day yesterday with a couple of other ones:
Home: A Memoir of My Early Years (Paperback) by Julie Andrews
It was released last month.
On latte art-
My husband and I have both worked at a local coffee shop that prides itself on latte art and will be opening our own in August. The main thing to learn in order to create latte art is how to steam milk properly. It shouldn’t have any visible bubbles, and you want the milk to almost spin in the steaming pitcher as you’re going. If there’s a local coffee shop near you that you’re pretty familiar with, I bet the workers wouldn’t mind showing you how (as long as it’s not during a rush). Once you know how to steam the milk (and maybe you already do) you can learn how to do different pours. Like someone esle said, most of the ones you showed are etchings, but even the bunny isn’t too hard if you practice steaming and pouring. Basically, it’s just a lot of practice and playing with it. Youtube has some pretty good videos if you search for latte art. This might have been more info than you wanted to know. π

Is your mom Elizabeth Chapman? I have one of those pieces on my wall! I bought it in Springfield, MO as a wedding present to my husband. I love it. We would actually like to get in touch with her to know if we could commission a piece for the birth of our daughter.
