If you’d like some cheerful inspiration, you should check out Helen Dardik’s illustrations. They are so fun. orangeyoulucky.blogspot.com.
On your walk to Starbucks… listen to canadian artist “Feist” and listen to “sea lion woman”… I love that song! Her guitar solo is fabulous.
Take care, don’t work too hard!!

Probably not new, but I’ve been alternating between David Ford’s “Songs for the Road” album and Tilly and the Wall’s “Bottoms of Barrels” album.

PS: I’ve ordered your book from twopeas and I’m eagerly waiting to get it! ๐
Don’t know if you have heard her or not, but I have been inspired by the music of Kate Nash lately. Her songs are quirky and fun and can be sad and really beautiful. Merry Happy, Foundations, Birds, The Nicest Thing, The Skeleton Song and Mariella are my current favorites, and I think I just listed half of the CD. Oh well! Hope you enjoy and find that inspiration.
Check out my boyfriends band! They are still in college but they are pretty good. Moosebeard and the Beardless Bandits. By the way I love you new book and will be doing a podcast on it tomorrow for my site.
Here is a video of the band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOimganJpuk
Also this:

The singer, named Thomas, was just voted out of the French American Idol (“Nouvelle Star”), which outraged everyone – he was soooo good and charismatic. This is his band’s Myspace, and I love both their covers and original titles.
I love this song and I think you will love it to, the video is amazing.

Hi Elsie,
I’m not usually a commenter, but have found a couple of fun new artists over the last few weeks, so thought would pass on. Linzie Hunter (http://www.linziehunter.co.uk/) does lovely illustration work, and I also adore Janet Bell’s seaside-y paintings (http://www.janetbell.co.uk/). Although far from a new discovery, if you don’t know Lauren Child’s work, she’s well worth checking out, too (http://www.milkmonitor.com/).
Good luck!
have you seen the movie “The Diving Bell and The Butterfly” it is french and shot with a lensbabie…a pretty film
on itunes i found White Rabbits, i really have been enjoying them. And also Racing Kites. Good luck! Your lovely eye*candy is amazing <3
I hear ya!
Movie: Lars and the Real Girl. It’s not new…but it’s in the new DVD releases.
Music: Joanna Newsom, The Milk-Eyed Mender.
Hope those help. If not, a long nap is always good!
http://www.limoonland.com/
I love LOVE love Tom Waits times ten, but I surprisingly kinda like some of Scarlett Johansson’s covers. Some of them aren’t bad and it is low key, moody music that could produce some inspiration.
Also, I love the Iron & Wine song “Trapeze Swinger” and it’s long enough to keep you singing along for a few minutes!
I recently watched Mona Lisa Smile again and found it very inspiring! Some other great films: Marie Antoinette (has soo much eye candy!) and God Grew Tired of Us, a documentary about these refugee boys from Africa, a few of them go to my university and are very talented artists!
And gogreengiraffe.com features lots of great fair trade crafts! These guys are my favorite: http://www.gogreengiraffe.com/subCat.php?id_ctg=81
Do you listen to the ting tings? Theyre cool.

What Dreams May Come
those are just some things off the top of my head! Best to you, love your work!!
This may be a duplicate comment…I can’t tell if my first one came through.
It basically said that I love Tom Waits (times ten) and that surprisingly, I still liked a few of Scarlett Johansson’ covers from her new album, “Anywhere I Lay My Head”. I was scared that I was going to hate it, when I have such respect for her film work, but it was very relaxing to listen to. Mellow, moody music that could provide some creative inspiration.
Also, my favorite song of all time is Iron & Wine’s “Trapeze Swinger”. If you haven’t heard it, I totally recommend it.
I always enjoy Harry Connick Jr (music)- especially his red light, blue light album and songs I heard. Very uplifting to my spirit and soul.
As far as film- when I need a pick-me-up I turn to gentlemen prefer blondes, Summer Stock, Harvey Girls, and other oldie musicals. love the costumes!

Keep up the fantastic work!!
Hi Elsie…well….let’s see if I can share *something new* (or at least new to me!! haha!).
music: mr. jason mraz and his cool single selection on itunes. I just got the single ‘I’m yours”…and I just love the drawings that accompany each single covers.
film: I am an independent movie kind of gal..and I’ve recently watch Under the Same Moon and ESL. Loved both!
book: got inspired by a cool book for young readers titled “Waiting for Normal” by leslie Connor. the character is this young girl whose optimist view on life is so refreshing. it is all about the little moments, eh?
Photography: learning to see creatively: by bryan pepterson. very niiiiiice!
recipe book by elsie….oh wait…you are probably familiar with that already! netherless to say, I am inspired by you.
that’s all I got for now girl…hope it helps!
Hi Elsie,
I love your work. I make digital drawings that are a little off-beat. If you’d like to take a look, I’m at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dahleah/
Good luck finding some inspiration… I also get ideas from looking at vintage graphics and old paper dolls, or just any kind of ephemera. And putting 2 things together that don’t really make sense.
Have fun! xxxooomelissa
Hi Elsie!
I read your blog all the time but rarely comment! This might sound random by the way, but I’m totally into the same stuff as you, but still very much developing as an artist now. For Mega inspiration, If you ever want to visit Ireland, then give me a shout, and I can put you up in the huge house I live in! we have about 13 bedrooms, in a sunny valley overlooking the River Lee in Cork.. its purty… so theres a random bit of inspiration. Which possibly sounds like a scary random invite from a stranger but there ya go! You deserve it for all the people you inspire!
Other than that I can only suggest…. Looking at my latest piece of art! *BEAM* currently exhibiting.. It’s made of ALL sorts… sweet wrappers, sweets, all sorts of junk I collected in boxes from my fellow students.. got bullet caps, condoms (in wrappers!) tablets, photos, broken jewellery, tickets for buses and gigs etc, fag butts, bottle caps.. …. EVERTHING.. and put it all together to depict college life IN the college..
I hope you Like it…

Have you ever listened to Boards of Canada?
It’s a thought! I don’t know if you will like it, but it is interesting and kinda moody feelin’. That is not a bad moody thang.
Have you seen this blog? http://color-stripes.blogspot.com/
I am SO In love with the band “Hello Stranger”, the self titled 1st album I think is the best, but the new one is pretty good too ๐
It is very… british pop, but there are some really nice slow ones as well. “Robody” and “we used to talk” are my faves on the “HS” album.(they also have some wicked photo shoots- lots of fun costumes and looks)
Get some rest! It’s well deserved I am sure ๐
Hi, Elsie!
Some new music I have been really into is Kate Voegele and Creedence Clearwater Revival. That last band is from the seventies, but they’re stuff is really still pretty good. Kate Voegele is a new find, and she rox too.
I just wanted to say what a huge fan I am of you, and I especially love your work (like scrapping and such). I can’t wait till I can get your new book!
xo, Aliya
ps. Some great movies I have seen recently are Reservation Road and Stardust. Not so much I Am Legend. Kinda cheesy, and TOTALLY no point to it. Sad and scary, with no substance.
My inspiration these days come from Madeleine Peyroux, she is awesome ๐

Hey Elsie!
I have been on a HUGE music finding kick lately – some of my current favorites are The Weepies (good tracks are “World Spins Madly On” and “Gotta Have You”) and EastMountainSouth. Their entire album (there’s only one) is wonderful, but particularly great songs are “Hard Times,” and “So Are You to Me.” Enjoy! =)
I’m really looking forward to this movie….more than about surfing, about homeschooling, and alternative parenting! Looks RAD

Hi, Elsie! Just ordered your new book and some Love, Elsie goodies from Two Peas…can’t wait!
I just got this book that I think you might like; it’s called Big Eye Art by Blonde Blythe. It’s got different artist’s modern take on the Big Eye kids (and ‘pity kitties’ and ‘puppies’, too!). Very, very inspiring.
Thomas Woodruff’s art is amazing, too. There was a half hour docu on the Gallery channel (our cable system has it on the HD channels). Anyway, his “Freak Parade” is just beyond description. Unfortunately, I haven’t come across a web page for him, but bookmistress.com has the FP book for sale (just ordered!). He’s definately worth seeking out!
For some kitschy music, try “Xanadu”…the original movie soundtrack. ELO’s “I’m Alive” makes me happy :). Also listening to Lily Allen lots. Happy Creating!
Have you heard of “Built by Snow” I love their album “Noise”; and “the Postal Service” and how about some old school…..Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Can’t wait to check out the new book!
Have you heard Sara Bareilles yet? Her CD is great!
I’m also always inspired by looking around Etsy, although I know you already know about Etsy since you have a shop! I recently opened a shop there, BlessedRoadPhotos. So anyways, there are two inspiration ideas! ๐

Elsie, glad you have another book–but your stuff is always
S L O W coming to Utah. (Even though all this stuff started in Utah and lots of companies are here). I love your style! Scrapbooking has gotten too complicated–too much clutter and fuss. I love your style because it is clean, and not cluttered.
Hi.
You inspire me in everything you do and I often visit your blog but hardly ever comment. Sorry.
I have to say that it feels a little bit strange to do this – try to give some inspiration back to you… hmm.. But I really think that you may like this:

Itยดs my little sister singing – another big inspiration to me.

Then I can take you up to Big Bear and we can cruise around the lake and you can take more pics and then go home and paint log cabins, and trees and forests and pretty wildflowers and then be refreshed again..come on girl, it’ll be fun! ha!

Okay, I know this post was a few days ago, but have been downloading some music today so this was on my mind…
Going “old school” and making a mix CD with some Elvis Costello, Cat Stevens, and 10,000 Maniacs. Right now kicking along to “Veronica” Elvis C, one of my fave songs ever. ๐
Have you seen Across the Universe yet?
Can’t wait to buy your new book, I keep going through your Challenges book when I need a little inspiration. I’ve been listening to Amy Winehouse and Sara Barreilles while scrapping. Here’s a non scrappy site that’s a good source of visual delights http://ohjoy.blogs.com/my_weblog/
Hey Elsie,

Hey Elsie,
I know this post was becuase you wanted to have others share what music/movies inspire them, but I think I need a little something too. I’m new at scrapbooking and I’m having trouble being satisfied with my scrap layouts and picking what to put on a page. Scrapping is supposed to be fun, but I want something nice that I can be proud of that I made. Fun but not sloppy. Any tips? I’ll try to get my hands on your new book as soon as it becomes available. Sold out in many places. Congratulations.
Thanks for your kind words and inspiration.
