We’ve all had fruit salad, but hang with me because this simple tip makes it so much more special! So much so that I made it twice this week.
A few weeks ago in Chile, I was craving healthy food (due to pizza overdose!), and I ordered a fruit salad. I didn’t expect much because we all know they can be very hit or miss. And when it came out, it didn’t look like much. But then I took a bite, and it was AMAZING. Jeremy and I spent the whole lunch trying to dissect the flavors. We eventually concluded that it had to be a combination of citrus and ginger zest.
I ordered a zester as soon as we got home, determined to recreate this elevated fruit salad for our everyday lives.
I’ve been experimenting with 1 tablespoon citrus zest and 1 teaspoon ginger zest. For the citrus zest you can use limes or oranges too. Just make sure they are organic. Stick with whatever flavors appeal to you!
After you have your zest, just toss the fruit in it and let it sit for an hour or so before serving. It adds SO MUCH flavor, you’ll be shocked. I don’t add any sugar or any type of sweetener to my fruit salad. It’s crazy to me that a lot of recipes and restaurants do.
I hope this tip helps some of you enjoy more fruit at home. The other thing that helps, not gonna lie, is this cute vintage bowl set I just bought from Etsy. I need to host a brunch soon! 🙂
If you have any simple tips for making raw fruits or veggies taste more interesting, I would LOVE to hear in the comments! xx- Elsie

That’s such a great idea Elsie ! We never eat too much fruit salad.
A few chopped mint leaves, yuzu juice or pure vanilla extract is also nice in fuit salads. Di you also tried to add some edible flowers ?
I typically do a large bowl for us and I eat on it all week ;D I like to add about 3 tablespoons (or I just swirl the bowl twice) of organic agave nectar to mine. It gives it just a hint of sweetness and makes it super glossy and pretty. Also try adding some pear! It adds a great texture.
I love ginger and I’ll definitively try this out! It looks so yuuuummy 🙂
Thanks for sharing, have a great day!

Are you only eating raw foods right now? If your open to cooked veggies, I roast everything! Yesterday we had roasted asparafus, green beans, broccolette, and carrots! I put them on a jelly roll pan (Cookie sheet with edges) and toss them in a little oil (I prefer either coconut, evoo, or avocado) and add spices! I use the mrs dash alot because they don’t have any salt my favorites are onion and garlic blends. Almost everything I do has one of those in them. I put each pan in the oven for 15 minutes at 375 and then toss em again. And put them in for another 5-10! Everything is soft and delicious! I loooove it!
For raw fruit I love a good fruit salad or just the fruit alone. I love grilled peaches and seared pineapple with some chili powder! Frozen bananas are amazing same with frozen grapes! And don’t get me started on snoothies. If you have a nekter juice bar near you, run don’t walk to it and try their tropical cooler smoothie, or their orange crush or their pink flamingo. You know what youcan’t really go wrong with nekter lol.
I also love raw veggie pizza where the crust is a Pillsbury crescent dough baked and once it’s cool you do a thick dressing like the ranch veggie dip and then raw veggies lile tomatoes and broccoli and carrots all over with some cheese!
Lovely!!!

We devour fruit salads at our house, they are kinda like our go to if we need something to fill in the gap in our meal. Plus, everyone loves pitching in to help make it, which doesn’t take long at all. We take like pineapple, strawberries, bananas, peaches, fried apples, and peach pie filling! The peach pie filling gives it a wet ingredient that holds it all together and everything taste great with it!! Then if that is not enough, we add cool whip on top!!
Do y’all have a signature dessert, also do y’all make macaroons?
Lime, salt, and chili powder work well for yellow fruit salad (mangos, pineapple, peaches, nectarines)
Lightly sweetened coconut shreds are yummy tossed in tropical fruit salads
For a berry salad, try adding a squeeze of fresh orange mixed with a little balsamic glaze. Ahhhmazing.
sounds amazing! love the serving dish. xx. gigi. http://www.gigikkitchen.com

My family always makes an amazing melon salad with lime, mint and agave. It’s amazing! Honeydew and watermelon (or whatever sweet melon is in season) tossed with LOTS of finely chopped mint, lime juice and some agave nectar for sweetness. Use a melon baller if you have one – it makes a great presentation. So good on a hot day served with BBQ!
Never did it before! Great tip. I’ll try as soon as I can!
Do you peel the ginger before? Or it’s not necessary?
Never thought about adding edible flowers! How exotic! But I can bet it will make the salad even better. And prettier! 😉
Need to try! Thanks!
I love a good fruit salad! love the pineapple stars!

I’ll admit that I haven’t been eating the healthiest meals this week. As a runner that’s a super bi no-no. So it was great to get online this morning and find your fruit salad recipe in my feed. Looking forward to trying this one at home so I cab eh-em leave behind the guilty “I’ve eaten too many subs” thoughts. LoL
Have a great day!

Love fruit salads I must try it

It sounds crazy, but my boyfriend’s family adds 1-2 teaspoon(s) of clear tequila to fruit salad and lets it sit in the fridge for a few hours. The alcohol releases the sugars in the fruit and makes it taste amazingly sweet (without tasting like booze!)
this looks amazing! and just in time for spring and some of my favorite fruit coming into season =o)

I love this! Defenitely going to try it out when spring arrives here in the Netherlands. Oh, has anyone ever told you that your site design looks absolutely adorable? Thought so 😉
Keep it up!
