Yesterday, my mom and dad brought over a trunk full of summertime flowers from my grandma's garden. We planted them, watered them and now I can't wait till summer!

oh definitely plant some herbs and veggies.
tomatoes are my favourite to have in the garden. also jalapeno peppers.
fresh herbs are awesome too! this year i think we’ll put in cilantro, parsley, basil…maybe some more.
gardens rock π
Herbs will grow SO Easy, and will save you tons of money. I plant sweet basil, cilantro, time. You can do a container of just mint (it grows crazy and invades everything)and make fresh mint water and mojitos!
I suggest basil & rosemary. I planted an herb garden last year and ended using those two the most in my cooking. Chives did really well & were pretty, but I only used them once.
tomatos. There is nothing better then a tomato fresh off the vine for a sandwich while sitting outside!
Yum!
Hi! I guess it depends on your location, but grape tomatoes are easy. We also enjoyed pepper plants last year. Enjoy!
basil! i could eat it all the time.
Basil, dill and chives
basil and tomatoes. best combo ever.
My mom and I had an herb garden growing up that filled our backyard with the most amazing smells, not to mention was great for cooking! I definitely suggest rosemary, thyme (there are a few different kinds, lemon thyme is particularly nice), and mint- they smell amazing and from what I remember where pretty hearty plants. Oh and lambs ear, although not for eating, is very pretty and has the softest leaves on the planet!
As for veggies, tomatoes are always good if its warm enough, as are peppers (both sweet and hot).
Good luck with your garden!
I love herbs, they have a fantastic smell and they grow easily. I like basil, rosemary and mint.
I am going to plant cucumbers this summer mmm π I need to practice being Environmentally friendly this summer because I am living in the environmental house on my college campus next year !
Awesome! I’ve really been wanting to grow a little garden.
I bought the stuffs to grow sweet peas, they’re one of my favorite flowers. :]
love yooou! xx.
Tomatoes! There’s nothing better than a fresh sliced tomato sprinkled with sea salt and a little vinaigrette! Yum!
Tomatoes and basil. Especially due to the fact that this season wiped out a lot of the tomatoes and the selection is going to get rather slim soon..
P.S. Your blog is my new favorite!
Tomatoes are so easy and fun! I like be beefsteaks and sweet little grape tomatoes. Basil is excellent with fresh tomatoes too. If you plant a few onions, a pepper plant, and some cilantro you can make your own fresh salsa,YUM!
Isn’t gardening the best!! Zuccini is super low maintenance and Is a great space filler. Beans are delicious but need tlc to get a good crop. Oh I can’t wait for May 15th to plant my veggies! Darn the cold Rocky Mountains!
As far as herbs go, Rosemary and thyme. Rosemary makes delicious pork chops and roast, and thyme is good on fish, especially salmon. Just be sure to do a little research before you plant them in the ground vs a pot. Some herbs spread, and some are hard to get rid of once you’ve planted them! I like planting mine in pots best!
We had an herb garden at my old home. It was lovely to have tomatoes, rosemary & mint right in my backyard! I do agree that it all smells wonderful & is great for cooking!
basil would be great, and tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers are so easy to grow!
Mint!!!!!!!!!!
no1:smells great when having your morning coffee in the garden…
no2: you can use it in sauce and mint cup cakes
no3: is always in the mood for a mochito cocktail!!!
he, he
sorry!!
i meant MOJITO!!!!
xxx
Sage is really pretty and you can use it in bouquets, as well as flavoring chicken or turkey or what not. Basil is very practical and great for pesto (but you can make pesto out of any herb, really).
What do you find that you use the most at home? If it’s parsley, plant parsley. If it’s rosemary, do that. It depends on what you like π
yay! these suggestions are all amazing!
& i happen to love mojitos. π yay!
we grow tomatoes, cilantro, basil and dill in a small flower bed with some peppers added for more color. i a large clay pot, we have a nice crop of rosemary and mint. the mint needs to be in a container or it will take over the herb garden. a few plants will yield a big harvest. our neighbors love to help us harvest our crop. fresh herbs for everyone!
hugs!

Hi there- are you on facebook?
yes! i’m on facebook ‘Elsie Flannigan’
XO.
I would check out missouriconservation.com because they sell native missouri plants for super cheap (we’re talking 25 blackberry bushes for $8! TOTAL!). I bought blackberries and elderberries along with “nine bark” which is supposed to help with erosion issues.
I have mint on my front porch and it is doing well and we also planted potatoes. I’m hoping they do well too π
good luck with your garden!
zucchini! then you can make this:
slice zucchini length-wise, (about 4 strips), lay in pan, drizzle with olive oil, salt & pepper. put it under the broiler for 6 minutes then turn zucchini and broil the other side.
yum!
oh, and kale too!
Mmmm, yes…cilantro is one of my fav herbs that we grow! And last year we did an upside down tomato plant which worked out great (if you put in a post with a hook, you could stick in right in your garden). Pumpkins are always fun too, then you don’t have to go buy em’ in the fall!
Jamie π
put some lemon trees in. they are so pretty and bright right now in my yard. also they make great center pieces!!
xo.
I know a lot of people have said it already… Basil and Cilantro! If you grow your own basil you can make pesto!! π
Yay for flower gardens! I love Basil because I’m a horrible gardener and it’s *really* hard to kill. Plus it’s so tasty!
Herbs – parsley, mint and rosemary are easy herbs. Basil is fussy. Your little one would love to see cherry tomatoes. They are easy to grow and yield alot of fruit. Enjoy!!
Strawberries! They take a while to get going, but there is nothing sweeter than a fresh strawberry. Also if you do some researching you can usually do peas in the spring and the fall. Good luck!
basil and rosemary. it’ll smell amazing out there π
I am definitely with others on the basil and tomatoes. Nothing beats a tomato from the garden and fresh basil is good in just about any summer salad or pasta. Lavendar is also very nice for the smell, my fav. Strawberries are easy but don’t expect to really reap the benefits until year 2. Oh and mint is great but definitely only grow that in containers…it is very invasive!
p.s. Sunflowers of any kind, mixed variety is my favorite, will bring lots of beautiful song birds to your garden. <3
My faves are lemon balm, rosemary, and lavender! Nothing beats the smell of an herb garden. I love walking through my garden every night.
Oh an herb garden is too easy, Els! That’s so sweet you have flowers already, I still can’t plant for another few weeks.
it’s so cool that you get to plant flowers etc. We have a garden now but moving to an apartment so no point in growing anything π
i just love lavender, rosemary, mint, basil & lemon balm :)I also love tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries π These are all really easy, the smell so great and they taste just perfect! ENJOY π XO.
Papaya are so funny!
my dog loves papaya so I gave her some when I eat, suddenly a papaya tree show up on our garden exactly were sofia (my dog) eats:D
onions! π
Parsley and Basil always come in handy at our household! π
tomatoes for sure.
strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers are perfect for the summer!!good luck! βΌ
Corn is huge and easy to grow! Fresh corn is so yummy too!
April is the month I plant GIANT PUMPKIN seeds!! When Halloween rolls around you have big gigantic fabulous pumpkins to carve, roast seeds and even make pumpkin pie!!
This year I am also trying the little mini white and orange pumpkin gourds
oh how good fresh garden veggies are…definitely would have to suggest tomatoes, cucumbers (so you can make your own pickes!) and zucchini! yum yum yum. mmmhhhmm…you can also plant cabbage right now! that is an early spring crop! xoxo andie…
Rosemary stays green year ’round and smells wonderful! Love to throw a few pieces in soup or veggie dishes. Lavendar is another that looks pretty and smells good – and sometimes comes back!
I also like chocolate mint and pineapple mint – so pretty and smell so nice! π
i was super in love with my cherry tomatoes last year.
and my herbs: basil, rosemary, chives, sage! all used a ton in my cooking and soooo easy to maintain. just a little water and love!
Rosemary is very strong and easy to grow, and tastes delicious in anything! Adding it to chicken, or Italian sauces, everything. Also tomatoes or cherry tomatoes is a must!
Also, we’re finding that pumpkins are surprisingly resilient! My family lives in Dubai, where now it’s starting to get super hot during the day, and is never ever cold, and my baby sister has a pumpkin plant sprawling across our yard. Hopefully the actual squash will survive!
i wish i had a garden! my parents grow tomatoes, zuccini and rhubarb with great success so i really recommend you to try those! if i had a garden i’d also grow lavendar for craft projects. good luck and i’m looking forward lots of photos of your new home and garden!
Last year we planted a perennial pot of herbs and so they’ll come back each year. Chives, two kinds of oregano, and thyme in the same pot. We also grow basil every year. It’s great to go out and clip fresh herbs. We also have mint growing like mad in our yard!
purple hull peas !
so delicious π
rocket seems to be fairly easy to grow, my mum has taken to growing leeks in her former flower border also. good luck with your garden, I’d love more space to grow stuff
I love gardens!
my dad just planted some squash, and tomatoes.
he also planted cantelope, but we aren’t really sure how thats going to turn out. All I know is that cantelope spreads a LOT!
so hopefull it wont take over our entire yard!
Good luck with your Garden!
xoxo
B’s
p.s. I think Herbs are gorgeous.
Peas are always best straight out of the garden. We had a pea field at the back of our house and I used to gorge myself on them π
Sweet Peas are pretty although I don’t know if you can actually eat them :/
x
Oooo! I just planted my first herb garden a month ago and it’s so exciting to watch it grow! I have coriander (or ‘cilantro’ as you Americans call it!) and that grows soooo fast, I haven’t had much luck with my chives but I think they may be crowded. I’m growing cayenne chillis (which grow super fast but seem to be taking ages to ripen) and cherry tomatoes. But my faaavourite is my snowpea plant, it’s so cute and just starting to grow delicious snow peas!
I’ve found the best way to grow healthy herbs (in my 1 month of experience lol) is to fertilise them with a herb fertiliser when they first go in, and water them with Seasol once per fortnight. They have grow TONS quicker and healthier than my friend’s herbs (hehehe) Have fun! It’s so addictive!
herbs will grow great…also try tomatoes if you like them and want some veggies. They are easy to grow and you can make salsas, sauces, or just enjoy them in a salad or sandwich…good luck!
What a cute flower is that? I like it. Thanks for sharing this one but can you add more information about this. Just quite interested. keep posting!
