Austin, Texas— I can’t wait!

Logo

I'm really looking forward to visiting Austin, Texas this weekend with all of these amazing artists for the Renegade Craft Fair! Please come say hi to us! I'll be there representing RVA with my boyfriend and little brother, Doren. We are sharing a booth with our great pals from Bleubird Vintage too!

We're giving away free mini prints and CDs to the first 200 people! I've seen a lot of questions about what we're bringing (to sell) and it's a huge sampling of stuff from our store. Lots of prints, the paper dolls for kiddos, cute accessories and original art. Basically, it's what you would expect from us… if you have suggestions leave them here. I can bring pretty much anything from the RVA inventory!

PS. any good vintage shop recommendations for us? We want to do a little shopping if we can squeeze it in. I'm a huge huge fan of 1960s fashion…. your suggestions are appreciated. I also really want to visit the Daniel Johnston mural (i'm a huge fan of his!) and probably the cute cupcake shop in the camper (hey cupcake!)Anything else amazing? We won't have a ton of free time, but I'm looking forward to doing a little exploring before the fair.

(I LOVE RENEGADE!!! we will also be in San Francisco and Chicago this year!)

  • Hey Elsie, I really hope you’ll be here in San Francisco in July for the RF!

  • if you’re looking for vintage south congress is where all the cool shops are. there is even a costume shop! i took a photo of the daniel johnston mural at SXSW last year. i heart austin! hey cupcake is awesome! have fun wish i could make it!

  • Oh, I’m jealous! I went to two of the Stitch craft shows in Austin, and I was hoping I could make it back to at least check out Renegade, but alas… Hopefully it will go over splendidly and be back next year! Let us know how it goes!

  • Hi Elsie!
I definitely recommend you visit Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, they make the best cupcakes!

Sugar Mama’s is at S. First and Mary, they won’t disappoint!
(and their little bakery is adorable, too).

  • Truy’s on guadalupe has the most amazing stuffed avocado dish. My mouth is seriously watering just thinking about it! Could you bring some craft kits or the coloring book? Also, I’d really like to have one of the retired “favorite things” kits. Would you consider bringing it back?

So excited to meet you at Renegade!

  • south congress for sure!! there’s even a hey cupcake on the street too!! oooh i hope i can come see y’all!!!! big fan!

  • Hi Elsie. So excited you’re coming for Renegade

#1 What booth # are you?

#2 I recommend Blue Velvet Vintage, Room Service and Hog Wild (all on North Loop) and Buffalo Exchange on Guadalupe.

#3 I’m sure you don’t remember, but a couple years ago, I emailed to see if you wanted to come out to Austin to take my daughter’s senior pics. Anyway, I ended up taking some myself and my favorite is of her and her bff in front of the Daniel Johnston mural. See it here: http://www.unrulyartclass.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Untitled-35-1.jpg (My girl is the brunett)

  • Torchy’s tacos! It’s another one of those food trailer places and last time I was there (a year ago), there was a teeny tiny boutique housed in one of the airstream trailers…

  • I’m excited to see you guys there!! I advise shopping on S. Congress. My favorite store, Cream is located there. The clothing is seperated by era, I think you’d LOVE it!

You also have to stop at a Hey Cupcake! stand and try one of their delicious vegan cakes. πŸ™‚

  • Buffalo Exchange on Guadalupe is decent, and right next door to Toy Joy, the best toy store you’ve ever seen! They have crazy toys and a little ice cream store attached that sells vegan soft serve, if you’re into that. I can’t wait to see you at Renegade!

For food, Kerbey Lane Cafe is an Austin original. They have every kind of food under the sun. Plus it’s open 24 hours, so you can go any time (four locations to choose from)!

  • For BBQ – Salt Lick is delicious, but if you’re truly short on time, stop by at Rudy’s…fill up your tank and get some bbq. Don’t skimp on the creamed corn. It’s to die for.

And for breakfast, Kerby Lane pancakes are the most amazing things, or if you’d rather, have my favorite…a baked potato omelet. Delish!

  • Oh, fun! I went once in Chicago & loved it! I hope the Austin event goes well so they have it again next year… I’ll be living there by then.

Have fun! Enjoy my sunshiney state & eat at Torchy’s Tacos for me!

  • The trailer for Hey Cupcake sure is cute, but we have a million cupcake stores now and Hey Cupcake doesn’t have the best tasting ones. In that same trailer park where Hey Cupcake is located, there is another dessert trailer that sells miniature pies and her recipes have won national awards. There is another trailer in that lot called the mighty cone that has some pretty amazing food. Lots of fun stores on South congress and you could spend a month vintage shopping without getting bored. New Bohemia is right across the street from the “trailer park” and parts and labor is on that street – they sell handmade, not vintage. Torchy’s Tacos are the best and they in the OTHER trailer park on S. 1st.

  • hey cupcake is sooo good, you must get one, and they have the best names for their creations!

also, there are tons of places on south congress, so start there and you’ll find plenty of great vintage stores. there’s a crazy costume shop that has some vintage, too. all on s. congress :o)

    have so much fun!

  • elsie, all of these are on south congress.

    1. check out hotel san jose. it’s worth just walking around.

    2. gueros mexican, right next door across from home slice (great pizza).

    3. jo’s coffee (also right by san jose).

    4. uncommon objects (across from hey cupcake)

    5. hey cupcake – highly recommend the michael jackson.

    6. magnolia cafe (open 24hrs) – their gingerbread pancakes are worth a stop.

    have a great time!

  • I am definitely taking notes on these comments – I haven’t been to Austin in so long, and I’m so excited about this weekend! I’m making little journals for me and my daughter to take using Rachel’s instructions from Tell Your Story. Yay!

  • i’ve never been to Austin either! i hear amazing things about it, though. i totally heart daniel jonhston and and i think i saw Hey, Cupcake on TLC once! totally adorable.
hope you have a blast on your trip! <3

  • Im really excited you’ll be going to renegade in San Francisco! I’ll try to start brainstorming some hot spots for you to check out when you guys are here! I hope to come up and meet you in person if I don’t get too shy. xoxo.

  • Prototype vintage and Feathers are really good thrift/vintage stores & they are just across the street from Hey cup cake on South Congress. Also there is New Bohemia just down the street on congress as well. I think you’ll really enjoy those shops.

  • Sounds like a wonderful time! Have fun :)))

I tried to find your email but I must be blind–I’d love to include you in my inspiration links list for my upcoming spot as a guest curator at Crescendoh.com. If that’s OK with you, please let me know! Thanks! xoxo Jodi

  • Yay! I am jotting down all these ideas too! We will be at Hey Cupcake and apparently there is some really yummy donut place.
    Can’t wait!!

  • Congress street is awesome..we love the cupcake rv…the cupcakes are huge! That whole area is fun.

  • austin is amazing! my sister lived there and i was able to visit a few times.

you guys should go and see a movie at the alamo!!

p.s. i wish that you were going to be at the BK renegade because i’m going there just for it!

  • SO EXCITED that you will be in Austin this weekend. I will definitely be seeking out you and your booth.

  • Oh yay! I’ve been waiting for this post! I can’t wait to officially meet you in San Francisco for my very first Renegade. πŸ˜€

    xo, jenn

  • Can’t wait to see you and your booth this weekend! South Congress is lined with great vintage stores. There’s also an American Apparel on the same street. And definitely visit Hey Cupcake, it is phenomenal! Other great vintage stores are Feathers Vintage, FlipNotics, and Blue Velvet. They’re all not far from where Renegade will be. πŸ™‚

  • I’ve lived in Austin pretty much my whole life…SoCo is the way to go..hours could be spent at Uncommon Objects, as well as Lucy in Disguise. Homeslice is the best pizza in town, which is also on SoCo.

  • Room Service…omg room service is great and buffalo exchange.

Someone already mentioned the gingerbread pancakes at MAgnolia cafe. They are the best ever especially with pineapples on the side. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. yummy.

Enjoy Austin it is so fantastic.

  • For dinner…definitely Shady grove!!!! They have the best queso fried catfish!!! I am not a catfish fan but this dish is not to be missed!!!! Plus in summer they play old movies outside on a big projection screen under the old oak trees!!! Such a fantastic Austin eatery!!!! One of my very faves!

  • I was in Austin last summer for the HOW Design Conference: HOT!! Loved Hey Cupcake and all the stores along Congress – you will find some cool funky shops there (Uncommon Objects was one of my faves). BEST food at Chuy’s (where the Bush girls got busted for underage drinking!). Also Amy’s Ice Cream (the white coffee flavor was SO yum). Fresh salsa bar at Guero’s was excellent (Pres. Bill Clinton’s fave Austin spot). Waterloo Records is a fun store. It’s cool to watch the bats from the bridge. Here are my pics if you want to check them out: http://www.emilybarklage.com/Travel/Austin-Texas/

  • ooo! i second the savers on south lamar. i loove that place. found some super cute mugs one time πŸ™‚

  • I’ll be there for my bachelorette party weekend!! You’ll be my first stop at the craft fair for sure!! I’m a big fan of you guys and bleubird vintage. I think I’m more excited about the craft fair than anything else!! Can’t wait to see you guys!

  • South Congress is great, but a little bit of a tourist trap with higher prices than you can find going off the beaten path. I recommend Room Service Vintage. Great clothes! Great decor! I’m in Dallas, but trying to make a plan to go. If I make it I’ll be sure to say hi, as you’re one of my fav blogs!

  • Hey Elsie!

If you’re in the mood for pizza when you’re here, you MUST try Home Slice on South Congress. It’s AMAZING!!! I absolutely love it!

Can’t wait to meet you guys in person! πŸ™‚ Yippee!

  • As an Austinite and cupcake connoisseur, I would recommend skipping Hey Cupcake (the Airstream is cute, but their cupcakes are mediocre) and head straight to Sugar Mamma’s Bakeshop located at 1905 South 1st Street. Seriously, these are the most amazing cupcakes I’ve ever eaten in my LIFE. Plus, you can see the Welcome to Austin mural that’s one block from the shop.

  • you MUST go to torchy’s tacos and have their queso. best queso in austin, hands down! have an amazing time in my favorite city! xx

  • i really want to come visit you at the fair! i’m having a tough time getting motivated to do the drive by myself… i’m new to the area and have no one to come with me πŸ™ booo! hopefully i’ll see you this weekend!

  • I’m so bummed that you won’t be at the L.A. renegade πŸ™ Maybe next year?

  • Will be road tripping there this weekend!!!!!!!! Super excited to see the booth and finally have a chance to meet you. πŸ™‚

  • For cupcakes I would say Sugar Mama’s over Hey Cupcake – hands down.

    Vintage:
    Uncommon Objects is Uh-MAZING!
Room Service – furnished my first apartment almost entirely.

While you are on Congress – Lucy in Disguise in a MUST! It’s a costume shop where you can rent or buy and it’s GIGANTIC.

    See you at Renegade!
