French Toast Sticks
Ingredients
- 4-5 slices of bread I used an Italian loaf
- 4 eggs
- 2 tablespoons cream I used half and half
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon plus more
Instructions
-
Mix together the eggs, cream, vanilla and cinnamon in a shallow dish. Slice the bread into sticks. Coat each pieces in the egg mixture and place on a prepared baking sheet. I lined my baking sheet with a Silpatmat. You could also grease the baking sheet with a little oil or butter. Don’t use parchment paper, because we will be putting these under the broiler and parchment paper + broilers = bad news man. Don’t do it. Unless instead of making French toast sticks, you wanted to start a fire.
-
Not like that’s ever happened to me. I’m an expert baker and all. Uh….
-
Now sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar over each stick. Bake under the broiler for 2-3 minutes. KEEP AN EYE ON IT. Not all broilers were created equal, so watch yours and adjust the bake time. What we are aiming for is for the eggs to cook but also for the sugar to caramelize on top. Think creme brulee.
-
After 2-3 minutes remove the sticks from the oven, flip and sprinkle on a little more cinnamon sugar. Bake for an additional 2-3 minutes. Now you’re ready to serve.

Oh yum! We had French toast (or eggy bread as we call it) the other day. I never thought about adding other ingredients. I have always been taught to just use eggs and milk. I shall try this recipe next time xxx

French toast was the first thing I learned how to cook. When my friends came over for slumber parties I would make them breakfast! Then they wanted to know how to make it!
PS… these photos are killing me right now. Heading to the kitchen!

French toast reminds me of childhood. When I wasn’t really too sick not to go to school, but it was raining outside, and my mom (then very yound) didn’t want to go to her college classes, so we both played hookie and made french toast and watched cartoons 🙂
Oh wow. These. look. amazing-zing! I very sadly admit that I just used the broil option on my oven for the very first time. I think I’m ready to bring that count to two : )
This looks GLOOOORRRRIOUUUUS!
BTW made your red velvet waffles the other night and they were a huge hit. The batter was like a DREAM (so smooth!!) and the syrup was fabulous! So good!
Yum! French toast sticks were one of my favorite breakfasts to eat as a kid. I think I’ll have to try this recipe out this weekend!
French toast is my all time favorite breakfast food! I will definitely have to try this, it looks so yummy 🙂

Emma – I am so glad you joined A Beautiful Mess!! French Toast Sticks were my favorite breakfast as a kid, I can’t wait to make this baked version myself. And thank you for the post on making your own pasta…I just got the Kitchen Aid attachment and i’ve been planning to adventure into pasta making soon. Thanks for all the great recipes, tricks/tips, and of course your quirky humor. <3

YUM! Will definitely be trying this… I used to love Burger King’s French Toast Sticks when I was a kid…then I tried them again as an adult and well, they tasted like plastic. So disappointing! I’m sure this recipe you posted will reinvigorate my love of French Toast Sticks once more <3 Thank you!

I second the “Penzey’s spices will change your life” sentiment! Their Vietnamese cinnamon opened a whole new world to me. Quick question: My friends have converted me to using a Silpat (amazing!), but they all warned me never to use it with the broiler because it might warp the Silpat or create softer, uneven spots on the pad–has that been your experience at all? I love mine so much I’ve been too afraid to try it under the broiler.
mm! you’re making my hunger kick in!
kw, ladies in navy
those look so incredibly delicious!
meg- when using my silpat for this recipe I had no trouble. But I could def see some harm coming to a silpat if it was under a broiler for more than a few minutes at a time. Broilers are, well, very hot. Of course. 🙂 So if you are concerned I would skip it and just butter your pan well. Hope that works for you, good luck!
This is such a smart recipe – so easy and good! Thanks for sharing!
Okay, don’t hate me but I am not a french toast fan. However, my husband is, so I will definitely make this recipe for him!
These look so not good for you… but so freakin’ yummmmy!!
Aah they look so amazing. Great photography too. My husband always orders French toast – I tend to go for Eggs Benedict but perhaps I should start changing my order! Yum yum yum x
Oh, this looks so good!
Yum!! Much better than the freezer variety.

Mmmm, these look fantastic Emma! The perfect weekend breakfast!
Saw these on the blog and had to make them! They were awesome! I didn’t have any cream, so I just used regular milk. And I had a loaf of wheat bread, the poor kid cousin to the Italian loaf. It was my first time using the broiler, and it wasn’t as frightening as I thought it would be. Thanks for all the great recipies (along with everything else you guys post)!
<3 <3 <3
Wooaah they look delicious! I’m definitely going to attempt to make these-thanks 🙂

Dear Emma, I don’t know you (and I don’t even know what a french toast is.. shame on me, eh eh) but I wanted to tell you that I really like the way you write, it always seems that I’m listening to you instead than reading you 🙂

Yum! Growing up my mom would sometimes treat us with french toast sticks from Burger King. They sure weren’t the healthiest things, and as an adult, I love your take on them and the ingredients you’ve used much more! However you slice it though, french toast sticks will always hold a special place in my heart haha. Thanks for sharing!
love the idea of making them into sticks. made mine into heart shapes last week for v-day using a cookie cutter and served with strawberry sauce was awesome will try your version too for sure. p.s. challah is the best bread ever for french toast! xx. gigi. food and beauty blogger @ http://www.gigikkitchen.blogspot.com

OH yes, we have matching ideas of the perfect french toast stick! Making these!!!
I loooooooooove french toast, and these look SO good 🙂 I often use a little sprinkle of cardamon i my toast 🙂
These look super-delicious! Now I’m hungry. 😛
I have been known to put maple syrup in with the eggs sometimes!
I’m french, and sorry for my language… your French Toast looks good, but it is not at all French recipe!! As Keri-Anne, use mostly milk and eggs, and a little sugar.
Exactly, I mix an egg and a glass of milk (my husband, chef, adds a little brown sugar). I soak the bread (or brioche for my husband) in the mixture and I bake bread in a pan with butter 2-3min. I sprinkle sugar bread slices and enjoy!!
Here is the French recipe, more light, it’s true, but taste and tell me!!
Aurélie
PS: I love your blog, and thanks for all your many ideas!
I always find it funny that this is called “French toasts”, not sure that we French people eat a lot of it. Well, not me at least, though i absolutely love it! But we are supposed to use overdried old bread to make it, or old brioche, which i don’t have very often.. Maybe i should buy bread and let it dry on purpose 😉
I know what I’ll eat for breakfast.
Looks yum-my! This weekend I made Spice cake french toast.
Here’s my recipe:

i’m literally drooling over the pictures right now. this is totally up my alley.

Yum! I love french toast.
these look absolutely delicious! i am laying in bed at 10:40pm but am seriously considering getting up and making them right now 🙂
Love the photos, have never tried to make french toast in the oven, but it is certainly a staple in my house! And I can totally relate to the whole parchment paper + broiler scenario. Yikes! Thanks for the post 🙂
French toast sticks are one of those dangerous foods that you start eating and don’t notice 5 minutes later when you’ve had the whole batch. I bet these would be good with a bit of caramel dizzle. =)

I’m French and your “pain perdu” seems very good!!!
This reminds me of elementary school lunch in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY. I have never been a big fan of french toast, but have ALWAYS loved it in stick version. Go figure. So excited to try a homemade version. My mouth is watering just thinking of it!!!

So yum! French toast is my favourite breakfast treat and baked just makes it so much easier for sharing. I’ve tried a blueberry cream cheese recipe, but will have to give sticks a try.
Oh so yummie and much more beautiful than large french toast pieces!!!
i am a french toast fanatic! I am def trying this. Thank you!!!
It looks delicious and makes me want to eat, thank you!:-) !! I’m French so if you want I’ll give you the recipe as it is cooking in France 😉
French toast :
200g of milk
800g cream
1 whole egg and 4 egg yolks
150g sugar
Stale French bread (it is better when the bread is not fresh / bun or bread can replace bread)
Mix the egg yolks and sugar, add the milk and cream whipping. Deposit slices in the mixture and let it soak. Melt a little salted butter in a frying pan with a little brown sugar. Brown on each side. Enjoy as is or with a little cream or jam. NB: the real recipe is with stale bread + egg + milk.
Have a nice day !
I made this recipe this morning. I did not have any cream, so I used regular milk. It still turned out very good. Thank you very much!
Those look delish! I wish I would have seen it this morning!

I made these Baked French Toast Sticks tonight for dinner. They were so delicious. I followed the recipe and it worked perfectly for my oven. I was a little intimated, I’ve never made French Toast before let alone used a Broiler. I can’t wait to make these again. They would be a great addition to any Brunch. I can’t wait to try more of your recipes.
This looks so good and easy. So I was wondering could you make a large batch and freeze them and pop a few in the microwave? I have a two year old who loves french toast and this would be perfect to be able to pull a few out of the freezer every morning.
Yummy!! I haven’t made French Toast in forever, but I will be trying these!!
Oh my goodness, talk about a flashback to when I was a kid. I LOVED french toast and have not eaten it in years. Such a fun and cool recipe. Love the photo styling! Makes me want to eat a million french toast sticks!!!
