(early) Weekend Checklist: build Fort Lovely, drink too much bubble tea, make cute necklaces, pull out the store's Christmas trees, get some hot chocolate and pull an Elf moment with magical store decorating super powers…

(my favorite scene in the movie)

I also need to download some non-annoying Holiday music. Any suggestions? Ok… I'm off to have a top-secret planning meeting with Em. XO.

  • The Hanson Christmas album is surprisingly good and so fun! For sure get some Frank Sinatra and other things that fall into that style- no one is annoyed by it! The Brian Setzer Orchestra has some rockin’ awesome music, and of course everyone loves Sufjan Stevens Christmas music (another crowd favorite)! Elvis’s “Blue Christmas” and the Peanuts “Christmastime is Here” are musts! And my last suggestion (that I HIGHLY suggest) is the Elf soundtrack. It’s got great, adorable stuff!

  • The Relient K Christmas album, “Let it Snow Baby…Let it Reindeer,” is always my favorite. Great mix of classic songs and a few of their own that are equally great.

  • happy christmas (war is over) by the polyphonic spree
    blue christmas by bright eyes
christmas (baby please come home) by death cab for cutie

i love that elf scene too! such a funny movie.

  • Oh, your fort is so great! 🙂 Love the bright happy colors painted on it!! Yay for early weekend lists done, and cute necklaces! I’m excited to hear about some non cheesy Christmas tunes, too – always on the lookout for new ones!

  • Definitely get A Fine Frenzy’s – Oh, Blue Christmas
and maybe “the Hotel Cafe presents Winter Songs”.
    Both are lovely!

  • My mister got me Brian Setzer’s Christmas album a few years ago as an early holiday gift, and it is hands-down the best Christmas album I’ve ever heard!

  • My faves are the sorta Christmasy, sorta not songs like Okkervil River’s “Calling and Not Calling My Ex.” And I love all the old classics too, no matter how many times I hear them. Good luck in your search!

  • okay, now i want a tent..& a key necklace…& many, many other things in your lovely store!

the oc chrismukkah album is pretty good.

  • To me, my favorite Christmas classics boil down to this short list:

1)Any Christmas songs sung by Nat King Cole. The man is a Christmas music legend. Seriously magical.

2)Some of the classic Christmas songs sung by Sufjan Stevens (none of the newer Christmas songs he wrote. Sorry Sufjan.)

    Happy Christmas decorating!!

    xoxo

  • I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas! My Brother starts on November 1 leaving parts of that song on my answering machine so that by Christmas I have the full song and a full answering machine! Gotta love the lil bro.

  • LOVE fort lovely! so cute!

Definitely play Hotel Cafe’s Christmas CD!!! It’s nice bc it has a bunch of different artists who are all amazing.

  • There is no such thing as annoying Christmas music, except the Chipmunks… and “Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer” which I don’t classify as Christmas music at all! Happy Early Holiday decorating!

  • i worked retail too many years to enjoy ANY Christmas music, esp 12 days of Christmas by the muppets- Arrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
Can’t wait to see ALL the Christmas goodess!! It’s going to be fabulous!
    xoxo

  • I LOVE Elf. Such a great movie. I don’t know if I’m ready to watch it — yet — this year.
I wanted to share my giveaway with you and all of your followers! Check it out at kate-and-leigh.blogspot.com
Help out another {very} small business? You’ve got to start somewhere 😉

  • Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas stuff is great, also classics from the likes of Bing Crosby and Dean Martin. You have to include the Crosby/David Bowie “Little Drummer Boy” duet! There is a Harry Connick Jr. Christmas album from the late 90s that is pretty good.

  • I second the Relient K’s “Let It Snow Baby, Let It Reindeer” album suggestion. I LOVE it and can listen to it endlessly.

Also think any old Frank Sinatra is worth the listen! You have such a classy shop, and there’s nothing classier than Frank 😉

    love!

  • sufjan stevens and bright eyes both have really good christmas albums. ALSO my childhood favorite, John Denver and the Muppets Christmas. It’s a classic!

  • Do the Elf thing! That’s adorable. Paper snow flakes everywhere. 🙂
    Love and Turtledoves,
    Jaco

  • ooohh i love christmas music.
    – like others said. Sufjans albums.
    – I have an amazing Bing Crosby christmas album
    – Johnny Cash has a christmas album
    – The Slow Club have a very pretty (kinda sad) christmas album

    – the hanson one is classic too

so much goodness. good luck creating a christmas magic land..

  • I love Straight no chaser and there’s a french canadian album by Maryse Letarte that I think you’d like, it’s called “Des pas dans la neige” ans you can get it on itunes

  • Yes I echo the suggestions of Sufjan Stevens and Hotel Cafe. The Sufjan one is good because it comes with 6 cds I think (and stickers… yay!) and so its great for a store because it just plays and plays. : )

  • Vince Guaraldi – The Peanuts christmas song you know? That music is magical. It’s been used a lot though in non-xmas settings such as the Father/Daughter ice cream shop scene in my favorite film The Royal Tenenbaums.

  • first of all – the teepee is so good it’s now on my list of things to have/make.
secondly, i know you’ll have a lot of people recommending some good indie christmas, but i also really like the 80’s kind! haha.

i made a list of the ones i really like:

    christmas wrapping – the waitresses
peace on earth/little drummer boy – david bowie & bing crosby
merry christmas (i dont want to fight tonight) – ramones
happy xmas (war is over) – john lennon
    wonderful christmastime – paul mccartney
christmas in hollis – run dmc
    father christmas – the kinks

  • I love love love Brian Setzer’s Christmas album, as well as every song by Straight No Chaser.

    Fort Lovely looks, well, lovely!

  • Ft. Lovely is well, lovely 🙂

**i LOVE old-timey Christmas music especially Judy Garland singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (one my all-time faves). Other goodies: THE ANDREWS SISTERS, Ella Fitzgerald, & DARLENE LOVE

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) is my favorite of Darlene Love’s songs

& I know this technically isn’t a Christmas song, but Darlene Zschech singing Amazing Grace seems fitting for Christmas…so beautiful!

  • oh i cannot WAIT for christmas so i can start listening to my stash of sufjan christmas music! he has like ten christmas cds, i love all of them :]

  • You and your store are absolutely adorable! And that is hands down my fave scene too!!! In fact, thanks to the reminder I am now heading to the DVD cupboard to grab that movie.

  • The Puppini Sisters do some cute Christmas songs and I think they would not look out of place in your pretty shoppe!

  • A Fine Frenzy has a fantastic holiday cd. She has some classics and some originals and they’re all pretty wonderful!
The Maine also put out a fun christmas cd. Maybe not entirely your kind of music but some of the songs on it are really cheerful and great!

    xo

I love Elf! I’m having an Elf/Spaghetti Christmas party 🙂
@ Nat,I’ve seen Seabird while they were touring with David Crowder! They were really, really good!
    As far as music:
-Anything Christmas wise Trans-Siberian Orchestra touches will be pure gold.
-Slow Club’s cover of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is great. They have a whole Christmas ep,but it’s kind of melancholy.”Christmas TV” is amazing, though.
-“A Christmas Together” by John Denver and the Muppets, because,it’s amazing.
“Let it snow baby, let it reindeer” by Relient K,for upbeat and happy holiday spirts
    -“Christmas with the Rat Pack,”…classic!

  • My friend and I came into the store today, and we absolutely lovveeeed it! It is so cute, when we have more time to snoop around, we will for sure go back!

  • HOTEL CAFE – WINTER SONGS is a lovely collection that can be played all throughout the winter.

  • audrey assad just released two christmas songs. They are beautiful and very non-annoying.

  • Elvis’ Christmas album!!! That might fall into the too cheesy category… but it is amazing! And Frank Sinatra! Ahhh…Christmas music is just the best!

  • The “Elf” soundtrack is the best Christmas music ever and Jewel has a good one too.

    I heart Fort Lovely!

  • there is one song I know of that is Christmas related that I love~
it’s called “All I Want” by The Weepies. So darling..

    2. Swingin’ Christmas (Ella Fitzgerald)
3.***I personally love ‘NSYNC and PlusONE’s xmas cd’s but Jeremy (being a musician and all) would probably die. Soooo maybe not those.

    Go for 1&2 ;))
    XO!

  • The Pogues & Kirsty Macoll – Fairytale of New York. The best and only tolerable christmas tune out there. Bah and indeed humbug.

(Though I am tempted to check out the Surjan Stevens one that has been recommended!)

  • Harry Connick Jr. is my favorite C-mas music….and Kenny & Dolly….lol. Jewel has a cool one….and MICHAEL BUBLE….ah….Michael Buble!!!!!!

  • I looove Phil Spector’s Christmas album. A lot (umm, I’m an oldies nerd).

Oh, and if you were in Spain you’d definitely know what “annoying Holiday music” really is! ha! 😉

I’m in love with the fort.

  • Oh I love Christmas music…

Vince Guaraldi (spelt wrong I think…he did the music for “Charlie Brown Christmas” 🙂

and Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas EP’s are on permanent repeat in my house, from about now onwards…LOVE.

  • my two all-time faves are the Bing Crosby Chrsitmas Album and The Muppets with John Denver (may be annoying after a few too many listens)…also for some reason I think of Louis Armstrong as Chrsitmas-time music.

  • Christmas music! Check out the barenaked ladies christmas album. it has some funny moments and the duet with Sarah McLachlan is great! http://www.amazon.com/Barenaked-Holidays-Ladies/dp/B0002XED3A

also for some awesome vintage christmas music check out pottery barns’ hip holiday’s cds. they are simply amazing. eartha kitt’s “nothin’ for christmas’ is one of my all time favorites. http://www.amazon.com/Pottery-Barn-Holidays-Various-Artists/dp/B000LL46OO/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1288959580&sr=1-1

  • My boyfriend who is a musician was on a christmas compelation a few years ago called ‘Its not like christmas’. A bunch of artist including El Perro del Mar and my dear boyfriend who goes under the name Sketches for Albinos (he also goes under Matthew Collings) interpretates christmas songs in their own way. Have a listen to it. Its some good songs on it.

    Elin

  • The fort looks awesome and so do the necklaces!

I wonder what bubble tea is … not sure they sell them here in Argentina. Maybe at Starbucks? I’m curious.

As for the X’mas tunes which are not annoying, I don’t know … Let me think and if I come up with some song names, I’ll drop another comment :).

    Happy Friday!

    Miki.

  • Eleni Drinks Tea

Phil Spector’s Christmas Album, of course! Darlene Love, The Ronettes, The Crystals…it’s a 60s girl band extravaganza, and most suitable for a purveyor of lovely vintage dresses 🙂

  • Fred Schneider (from the B-52s) new band, The Superions’ “Destination… Christmas!” is a new holiday favorite for me. Super kitsch, super awesome.

  • “Little Stars,” by Holly Golightly and the Greenhornes; “All I Want for Christmas,” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; the hilarious Bob Dylan christmas album; and I’ll admit I adore Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby.”

    Good luck decorating the store!

  • classic christmas is the BEST — like ella fitzgerald’s holiday tunes…so magical!

  • #1) I brought Elf to work today to be my background noise! *Love* it 🙂

#2) We recently downloaded Stan Kenton’s Christmas album “A Merry Christmas,” and it is the best thing to have playing in the background… not annoying holiday, more cool holiday 🙂

  • bright eyes has a christmas album that is awesome. also sufjan stevens has a super good album too. so excited for christmas! your blog is awesome as always!

  • Songs for Christmas: Sufjan Stevens. You will never want to listen to anything else during the holidays ever again!

  • charlie brown christmas is my favorite non-annoying holiday record.
i also like the christmas one that johnny cash and june carter cash did. so not annoying.

  • ooh oooh, Bing Crosby! Get a recording of one of his awesome radio shows that have all his adorable monologues. Dear old Bing, how we do love him.

Your store seriously looks like the best place on the earth. Seriously. It makes me happy just knowing that somewhere like that exists out there. Maybe I’ll make it up to Springfield some day!

  • oh, and Songs of Joy and Peace– you know, Yo Yo Ma’s collaboration album from last Christmas? Gaggy name I know, but probably the loveliest, most non-annoying Christmas music ever. So eclectic and fun and sincere and high-quality.

  • My favourite scene is when he sings along with her in the shower. Love that film. Can’t really watch it with kids, because my youngest is still at the ‘afraid of santa’ stage. She better get over that soon. Says she doesn’t like his beard. Anyhoo…a nice tune with a country flair is ‘The Angels Cried’ Alison Krauss does a version i think.

  • Christmas with the Rat Pack, of course! It goes perfectly with a delicious cup of cocoa and a cozy fire. Sinatra makes most all moments even lovelier.

  • i am drinking hot chocolate as i type this…i love this time of year. and music…growing up my mom and i use to listen to tons of christmas music while decorating, last year i had my mom burn me the Hanson Christmas cd and the Manheim Steamroller Christmas cd….both are good…hansons is just fun and MS is just beautiful. <3

    <3 Mary-Morgan

Elvis’ Christmas album is pure genius. Our most favourite. xx

  • I really love Bing Crosby’s Christmas music. It might be the perfect flashback for your store. Who doesn’t love Bing’s voice?

  • It looks like you already have a ton of suggestions, lol, but here are a few of my faves, just in case you need any more 🙂

*the Starbucks holiday compilation CDs are pretty awesome, I think there’s at least 2 of them and you can probably purchase them on Amazon or Half.com

*The Charlie Brown Christmas special soundtrack by Vince Guaraldi is always a favorite

*Mr. Heatmiser by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

*Anything off of the Grinch soundtrack 🙂

I bet your store will be magical during the holidays! 🙂

    ~twiggy h.

  • Those necklaces are fabulous.
I personally like the Elf soundtrack. It has some Christmas oldies and a couple holiday-sounding tracks (even though they’re not meant to be Christmasy songs). Fun fun!!

  • You can’t go wrong with christmas movie soundtracks.
They’re not the usual music you hear when you go shopping and you get some great gems.

I suggest the polar express soundtrack.

  • OK, It’s not really holiday music, but it’s got the word snow in, does that count? I don’t know if she’s big in America, but a girl called Laura Marling does a lovely song called, Goodbye England (covered in snow), it’s lovely, the albums wonderful, even if its not holiday music you should have a listen anyway 🙂

  • Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas album is great, intermixed with other things. Also Sara Groves had a Christmas album released a couple of years ago which I love! Dustin Kensrue has one too…

  • Sufjan’s Christmas cd set is my favorite and gets worn out every year. There’s also a radio station on itunes that plays classic and big band Christmas music that I’m falling in love with.

  • Love the teepee! What fun.

My favortie Christmas song probably is annoying, but I love it. The Muddy Mudskipper’s Holiday Hop with Ren and Stimpy. Funny stuff.

  • I love the key necklaces! My favourite Christmas song is “How to make gravy” by Paul Kelly. I don’t really like Christmas songs, and so this song is not that Christmassy. But, it is Paul Kelly, and I believe he can do no wrong ^_^

  • Oh my! I’m so jealous of your shop! Theres nowhere where I’m living at Uni at the moment that is like red velvet, I think I might have to start saving my pennies and come and visit espesh! If I come, please can I live in ‘fort lovely’ during my stay 🙂 xoxo

  • The Hotel Cafe presents Holiday Songs is one of the best albums ever, I its sultry and sweet to the point I listen to it year round. If you want some pep in your Holiday step The Puppini Sisters have good songs. Fine Frenzy has another awesome sultry Christmas album. A good alternative Holida album is another various artist one: I’ll Stay Until After Christmas (I bought after a November breakup ha). Enjoy! Long live Christmas!

  • love vintage christmas stuff…can’t wait to see all the trees!!!

i’m ready to throw on elf, too. it has to be the best movie to get anyone in the mood for the holidays!

music ideas?? jars of clay- hibernation day, winterskin.

i think i just squealed a little reading that a ‘seabird wife’ reads your blog!!! LOVE IT!!!

  • I got Sting’s “If On a Winter’s Night” album last year for Christmas and I kinda love it… there’s just something about his voice. Relaxing. Not Christmas-y but more winter-y. Enjoy! =)

  • I like the Christmas album Snow Angels by Over the Rhine ( a little bit jazzy, a little bit naughty), also the song Carol of the Bells by The Bird and the Bee. Hope these help, love your blog!!!!

  • A friend of mine used to work at a book store where they would have a ‘tasteful hint’ of Christmas music. They’d have 6 cd’s playing on shuffle with only one of them playing Christmas music.

  • Everything is sooo pretty!! I really want to watch elf right now….heheh. Some good christmas songs that are different….hmm maybe the song from the Peanut’s christmas? can’t remember the name right now..and white christmas by The Drifters(it’s the same version that was used in Home Alone!!) And also Winter Wonderland by Diana Krall!! Hope these were helpful for you!!

    <3 chelz

  • Jars of Clay has the best Christmas music… nothing like the annoying music we’re used to hearing at the mall. They sing my favorite Christmas song of all time: “Bethlehem Town”.

  • my favorite Christmas song is “A change at Christmas” by the flaming lips. We also like the Cyndi Lauper Christmas Album but I don’t know if it would fall under the “not annoying”. Charlie Brown Christmas makes me happy. We also have the Phil Spector compilation “back to mono” and the 4th disc is all Christmas songs by The Ronettes and The Crystals and other oldies that you might like to add to the playlist.

  • It looks so simple but I just can’t figure it out and I’m the type of person who loves and needs manuals and tutorials:

So pleeeeaaaaase tell me how to make a fort like that! I want one in my living room!

  • My favorites:

    Beach Boys Christmas

The elf Soundtrack (just for Zoey Deschanel singing Baby it’s Cold Outside

Amy Grant’s Christmas Album (the first one)

    The Waitresses – Christmas Wrapping

Lou Monte – Dominick the Donkey

  • Sting released last year an album called If On A Winter’s Night. Love it!
Also Sarah McLachlan has a lovely Christmas album Wintersong.

  • I just found your blog and I love it! I’m now a follower!

My favorite “non annoying christmas music” is Over The Rhine’s album called “The Darkest Night of the Year”. It’s kind of mellow, and very beautiful. Her voice is haunting, and he’s amazingly talented on piano.

  • Not irritating Christmas music (in my opinion). Barenaked Ladies (I love their God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman). And anything by Harry Connick Jr. and Frank Sinatra. And another favorite is Go Fish’s Snow album.

  • I can’t go a Christmas without listening to John Denver & The Muppets- A Christmas Together. Takes me back to childhood. We even upgraded & got the CD version a few years back, rather than the vinyl.

  • I already saw it mentioned here – and I am one who kind of hates Christmas music…but Joshua James “Fields & Floods” is fantastic!
