December Book Club Selection!

December book clubI'm a little bit late announcing the December book club selection this month, guys. Sorry I made a few of you wait (and thanks for reminding me!). Truth is I really, really want to read Amy Poehler's new book, Yes Please. But then that kind of makes two comedian books in a row, and does that mean I'm not bringing enough variety to the book club? Will everyone be like, "Hey, I'm sick of laughing. Pick a different book, lady. This is a blog riot!" Or something like that.

But then, I kept hearing good things about this book. One person described it as "affirming." And if there is one adjective that you can use to get me interested in something, it's probably affirming. Or positive. Or if you mention Amy Poehler is involved, then I'm probably already in anyway.

So, we're doing it! We're reading Yes Please. You should go get your copy. Buy it. Borrow it. Steal it from your roommate. Whatever. Let's do this. I'm ready to laugh and be affirmed by Amy Poehler. Yes, please! (See what I did there!!!!)

Don't forget we'll be discussing Not That Kind of Girl on November 30th. This book has turned out to have quite a bit of controversy around it this month. So, there's that. Anyway, I'm excited to connect with you, my fellow book-lovers. xo. Emma

  • Hey Emma! I highly recommend a book called “Love, Rosie” from the same author of “PS I love you!” It’s a great book!

  • so excited to read this!:)

ps. did you guys announce the Print My Insta contest winners?!

  • Yes! Awesome!

Honestly, I was very let down by NTKOG. I was hoping it’d be laugh-out-loud funny, but alas, it wasn’t. There were a few good one liners, but overall I was disappointed. I am looking forward to hearing what everyone else thought though!

  • Sorry I know this isn’t the best place to ask this but do you know what price range your 2015 planners will be? I am doing a gift exchange with some friends and we set a budget and if the ABM planner is above the budget then I’ll start looking for other ideas haha. Thanks!

  • This book is so wonderful! She has a wonderful, distinctly feminine, unapologetic and very strong voice in this book – laugh-out-loud funny but also full of wonderful stories about finding yourself, the importance of being kind but also honest, and … well, I just loved it!

  • Whoo hoo! Just got this one for my birthday. We’re so in sync book-wise. (Last month, I read Not that Kind of Girl as well). I’m not sick of laughing!

  • I saw the title of this post and before I even scrolled down I said a little prayer hopping it would be Yes Please and it was! I’m so excited to read this with everyone. I’ve been holding out on it and didn’t really know why but now I’m glad I did. Also, can’t wait to talk about Not That Kind of Girl, it’s definitely something special.

  • Totally agree! Love this one, read it several times…

There will be a movie out soon, but it doesn’t look very promising…

  • HOORAY! I actually just finished it, so I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks. She’s hilarious, a tender heart, and a little taboo. What’s not to love? πŸ˜‰

  • No problem-I’m stoked that you’re excited for the planners! Thank you!

We will be sharing all about them next week so just hold tight a little longer Michelle-and thanks for asking.

  • You had me at “affirmation”. A friend of mine is dying to read this book. When she mentioned it, I looked it up, but Amazon had zero description so I thought “Why read it?” I love affirmations & always have room for improving my mental positivity so I’m in!

  • This will actually be the first book club of yours that I take part in! I’ve been dying to read this book, can’t wait!

    Life With Kendal

  • Excited for the discussion on both of these books! I actually read them back to back last month and LOVED “yes, please” while being pretty disappointed in NTKOG. I’m a female comedian and writer so I’m definitely down for this pairing and am excited to discuss the differences between the two! I also think “Yes, Please” offers so much more insight and wisdom and yes – affirming ideas, that it doesn’t feel like two similar books back to back at all! Exciting stuff, enjoy the read!!

  • I just started reading this and am loving it so far! Definitely affirming and positive. Can’t wait to hear what everyone else thinks about it!

  • I adore her and parks and rec is one of my all time favorite shows . Got the book last weekend. Really fun so far!

  • EXCELLENT choice. I just finished it and LOVED it. Plan to re-read and write down a bunch of quotes.
Amy Poehler is my new hero! Love her, loved the book πŸ™‚

  • YES! Great choice. I am working my way through Not That Kind of Girl and looking forward to discussing it. Lena Dunham is a huge talent but reading her stuff is a little like work to me (not in that it’s difficult, but in that it’s kind of draining). Reading Amy Poehler is pure delight.

  • I have a signed copy! I am so excited to join in on the ABM Book Club this time πŸ˜€

  • I just started reading this! It is hysterical – though I’m a little bit biased Bc I love Amy!

  • Yay! This makes yet another reason for December to be so exciting! I just got this book on audio book and have been listening to it in between doing EVERYTHING in my life, driving to and from work, while I’m in the shower, cleaning my house, it is the perfect pick me up to any day. I am looking forward to finishing it and discussing it with all you fellow A Beautiful Mess lovers. Great pick Emma!

  • YAY!! I’ve had to wait a wee while longer for this book to make its way to New Zealand but I must get my hands on it quick fast now! Can’t wait! πŸ™‚

  • Half way through this book and loving it. If you are on the fence about reading it I would highly recommend that you do!

  • I ended up reading this book in a day couldn’t put it down. And it’s funny because I’m new to your site and had read Lena Dunhams book as well, and of course since they are both nonfiction I compared them in my head. But personally I think Amy worked a lot harder for things and her life has actually struggle which really made me enjoy her book so much more. Great selection.

  • Can’t wait to finish this book – you really can’t go wrong with Poehler. And many thanks to B&N which is where I got my signed copy from! Yay!

  • Am currently listening the audio version of this book. I have never been a book-on-tape person (actually I hate it! – the voices don’t sound right to me) but I am totally LOVING Amy reading her book to me. It is like we are friends or something!

Highly recommend it, if you haven’t started yet!
    xo.

  • In the Audible version, she reads it to you, which is definitely and TOTALLY worth it – her intonation and laughs in the background will inspire and delight you. πŸ™‚ Promise!
