DIY Mandarin Orange Slice Snack Pouch

If you are a mom, you know how important it is to have snacks at the ready at all times. But usually my kids’ snacks fall to the bottom of my bag and get covered with who knows what, which makes finding a snack on the go a difficult feat. We partnered with Wonderful Halos for this post, and I sewed up a quick mandarin orange slice snack pouch to keep all the snacks wrangled and together in my purse. The design is inspired by my families love for the naturally sweet Halos and the easy, portable, and healthy snack that they are. Now I just have to grab the pouch out of my bag for ready-to-eat snacks as soon as the kids start to fuss.

Materials:
-2 large (12-by-18 sheets) of thick orange felt
-1 sheet of large thick felt
-1 orange 12″ zipper
-1 yard of HeatnBond Lite
-iron and scissors
-sewing machine and thread
-12mm jump ring and tassel (find these in the craft store on the jewelry aisle)
Wonderful Halos and other healthy snacks like Wonderful Almonds and Wonderful Pistachios to include as a treat!

Step 1: Begin by tracing half of an 11″ dinner plate on the orange felt folded in half and cut out two half circles.

Step 2: Cut another 2 half circles about 1/2″ smaller out of the white felt, and then two more orange half circles about 1/2″ smaller than the white ones.

Step 3: Divide the smallest orange circle into 4 slices and then curve the corners and cut the sides in slightly to create the center portion of the orange slice.

Step 4: Next, cut the HeatnBond into the same size as the orange triangle pieces and the white half circles and iron the glue side down onto the felt until it just adheres. Let cool and then remove the paper backing and place the pieces onto the large orange half circle and iron until the felt adheres and forms your orange slice. Repeat with the other orange half circle.

Watch the video below to learn how to install your zipper:

Step 5: Sew the two orange slices to the zipper with right sides facing out as shown below by moving your needle over as close to the zipper as possible and top stitching the felt to the zipper.

Step 6: Fold the orange slices on top of each other (right sides in) and sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance around the curve of the orange and over the zipper. Trim off any extra zipper after sewing.

Step 7: Unzip the zipper and turn the pouch right side out and add your tassel to the zipper pull. It’s now ready to fill with all sorts of ready-to-eat snacks like nuts, Wonderful Halos, and granola bars.

Such a simple project and not only do I have an adorable way to store my kids’ snacks while on the go, but the pouch is also completely reusable, so I don’t have to waste plastic bags or resort to a mess of snacks on the bottom of my purse. And my kids and I love having Halos sweet, seedless mandarins while they’re in season! So it’s a win all around! xo. Kara
