I’m feeling like maybe we should start a “soap” tag here on ABM. What do you think? I mean, I had a lot of fun making these bath bombs and we have a growing list of cute soap tutorials, so it just feels right.
These homemade soaps are modeled after stained glass Jell-O (sometimes called broken glass Jell-O too). It’s usually made with different flavors of Jell-O and sweetened condensed milk. I love the look of this classic treat, and I realized it would be super simple to make a homemade soap version. Here’s how I made mine.
Supplies:
-2 lbs. clear glycerine soap
-2 lbs. white glycerine soap
-essential oil for scent (I used sweet orange
)
–soap dyes
(red, yellow, and blue are great because you can mix them to make any colors)
-glass bowl or other microwave safe bowl
-soap molds (or you can use an aluminum loaf pan or cleaned out milk cartons)
-popsicle sticks or disposable spoons (I had forks on hand, so I used those)
I made 9 bars of soap for around $25 (not including the mixing bowl and loaf pan that I already had). These are really fun, easy to make, and very inexpensive, so they would also make great homemade gifts. Just FYI. 🙂
Step One: Cut the clear glycerin into cubes and divide into three groups. Melt the first group in a microwave safe bowl (or melt on the stove top using a double boiler). Microwave on high for 30 second intervals until melted. Use your popsicle or disposable spoon to stir as needed. Add your dye and essential oil. Then pour into your soap mold. Repeat this until you’ve used up all the clear glycerin and created three colors.
I used the same scent through all these because I worried that using multiple scents in the bar might get a little funky. But you can mix it up if you like—up to you.
Allow to set for at least 3-4 hours before removing from molds. I usually let mine set overnight just to ensure that it’s completely hardened.
Step Two: Cut the colored soaps into cubes or long rectangles. Place them in your loaf pan (or other soap mold). Arrange them so the colors are spread throughout and there is space for the white soap to pour throughout the pan.
Step Three: Melt the white glycerin soap in the same way you did the clear. Allow to cool some before you pour into the pan. You don’t want the white soap to be piping hot as it could melt your other soaps. Allow to fully set before removing from the pan. Cut into bars.
Easy, right!? You can use these bars right away, wrap in plastic wrap to store, or gift to friends. Happy soap making. xx. Emma

This is really cool. I’ve been trying a bunch of DIY homemade projects and soap has been one of them. Are you able to use these right away because they are made with glycerin? Do you have any suggestions for how to make these with a lye and oil based soap?
