If you've never tried a dutch baby before here are three reasons why you should soon: 1. They are delicious. Think if a pancake and crepe had a child. 2. They're called Dutch Babies. That's adorable. Duh. 3. They are super easy to make. It's kind of a baked pancake. No flipping required.I've been making these for a while now. I originally learned from this recipe and this lovely blog. Here's what I do.
Dutch Babies, makes two (very filling) servings.
Needed: 4 eggs, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup flour, 2/3 cup milk and 2 tablespoons butter for the pans.Preheat your oven to 350 F. Place a tablespoon of butter into two small cast iron skillets (or other oven safe pans) and place them in the oven while it heats up, melting the butter.
In a bowl combine the eggs and milk, whisk to combine. Add in the other ingredients and stir until no lumps remain in the batter. Once your oven is preheated remove the hot pans and give them a shake to evenly distribute the butter (if needed). Divide the batter in half and pour into each pan. Bake for 12-15 minutes. Serve with powder sugar, fresh fruit and plenty of maple syrup. Enjoy! xo. Emma

Here in Holland we call this a “pannekoek” (pancookie). They are also delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Lovely pictures, as always!

These look so yummy!!!! It’s making me want to make them right now!!
Well, I am also Dutch, but these are new to me. I know the pancakes (pannekoeken, as a poster mentioned before) , but these are made in the oven? So no actual pannekoek. You will have a hard time finding these Dutch babies in the Netherlands. Too bad, because they do look really delicious!
Whenever I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is check A Beautiful Mess for whatever reason. I love it when you post yummy breakfast recipes because then it gives me something delicious to look forward to! They’re always super easy to make and it’s making me more of breakfast person 🙂 thanks so much!
These look delicious. I wonder why they are called Dutch though? I’ve never seen them before and I’m from the Netherlands.
Nevertheless, thanks loads for sharing because I should definitely try these, yummy!

Yum … My boyfriend made me something like this a while ago, it was a bit thicker and had apples instead of peaches. Very filling, but delicious.

Mmmm. I make them with previously fried apples (in butter) and cinnamon and sugar. Dutch Apple Pancake I think is what they are called … but dutch babies are cuter!! 🙂
Hihi, I’m Dutch! We call this a ‘pannenkoek’, with filling.
Really delicious, and cool to see it on your blog ^^
Funny, I am Dutch and I have never heard of this recipe before. Though we have a few things that are a bit similar to this. I do think I must make them now! Thanks for the recipe!
Those look delicious. I need to try those soon! I love the name, especially being PA Dutch. That would be adorable for a PA Dutch baby shower! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

These look SO delicious!

They look delicious! And I love that the powdered sugar is all over the cast iron pans – that’s the only way to do it! 🙂
Funny, al the Dutch people commenting!
I’m from the Netherlands as well, and no, these are not “pannenkoeken” (the recipe resembles “poffertjes” a bit more, but not really either). They are not Dutch at all!
But that’s the beauty of a rich international history!
You get people from all over the world and they create wonderful new dishes!
When I lived in Canada I was amazed about all the “Dutch” products (and sayings), that I had never heard of, in my life :p!
These Dutch Babies do look yummy though! Definitely worth a try!
that looks amazing!I have a cast iron skillet just begging to be used for this recipe 🙂

Also a ‘real’ Dutchie here…don’t know these, have never seen them in my life. We know pancakes, they’re larger and baked in a pan. So definitely not truly Dutch, but I think this is probably the result of the confusion between Germany and the Netherlands. We speak Dutch and in Germany they speak German (but it’s called Deutsch in German), very confusing of course 😉
They look delicious though!
We once were in Amish country in Ohio and all the signs said things like ‘Dutch’, while the obviously spoke German and used the German language on all sorts of signs.
looks extremely delicous!
Never had one of those: they look yummy!!!!
That looks so good. If I had any skill I’d make this for the hubs. 🙂

This looks, SO GOOD! Check out my blog: http://thechicstreetblog.blogspot.com/
My mom used to make them for breakfast 🙂 They are scrumptious with a little lemon and powdered sugar on top. I am so glad you put this recipe on abeautifulmess. Love Love <3 <3
Funny, my family has been making these for years but we’ve always called them German pancakes. Love them. We made them on special Sunday mornings when we actually had the chance to eat together. One of my favorite family memories.
Oh my god! This sounds absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to give them a try!
I’ve grown up with Dutch Babies! My baby sister, born in the Netherlands, seven years younger than me, has endured relentless teasing about how we’re going to eat HER since she’s a Dutch baby. Now she’s old enough to make them herself…crazy how that happens!
ps. I especially love them with butter, powdered sugar, and a sprinkling of lemon juice 🙂
Mmm! Those look delicious

Simply makes me hungry! Bad that I don’t have ovens, can we bake it in Microwave?
I wonder if I could attempt to make a paleo version of this with almond flour… I think an experiment has just been inspired!
I love making these. I make them for friends when they come over for a quick bite because they’re so easy and surprisingly impressive. Love the peaches, they’re totally in season right now. Just picked a bunch… perfect. Peach picking pics posted on my blog!! (couldn’t pass up the alliteration once I thought of it) 🙂
How did I not know about theses already?! So good lookin’.
This was my favorite breakfast as a kid! Only we called them Dutch Boy Pancakes…My mom just made them the other morning and told my brother(22) and I (25) that we used to wake up and started chanting “Dutch Boy Pancakes” she said she got so sick of making them but it was all we ever wanted to eat!
omg I want one of those babies!!!
xo Emilie @ http://www.hungrydelights.com/

Ok so they look amazing, wanting some bad now!

I’ve been making these since I was a kid. There was a recipe in some kids’ cookbook I had. LOVE them.
It looks so delicious, I will definitely try it. I think it’s a perfect breakfast for the time when I’m on maternity leave!
Have you ever tried a swedish Kladdkakka? It’s an easy and fast to make, sticky chocolate cake, you could have a look at it here:

I’m from Holland and i’ve never heard of Dutch Babies, why are they called the way they are?
Looks great Shop Dresses Online at CopperEtiquette

Mmmmmm….looks yummy!
Ok – I love all the recipes. I want to see a post on how you all keep so slim. If I ate all the food that you show on this blog, I would weigh twice what I weigh! I realize moderation is the key – but still!!!!
What’s your exercise “regime”?
These look absolutely amazing!
Those are so adorable and they look so yummy! Saving it for Sunday’s brunch.
they look delicious, I love pancakes 🙂
i’m dutch, never ate a dutch baby…
still looks dilicious though <3
Those look TOO good not to try!
Very good sharing thanks
mmm, a combo between pancakes and crepes? that sounds like a lovely way to compromise haha
I made these this morning and absolutely loved them. Although my heart told me I needed to eat more, I could only finish one Dutch Baby– it was incredibly filling. I covered mine with strawberry, banana, and nectarine pieces and added little bit of maple syrup. I also added a splash of vanilla to the recipe before baking. Way too good!
My only problem with these is that saying “I made Dutch Babies this morning” could be terribly misunderstood! haha. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this crepe/pancake/bread pudding hybrid!
my mouth is watering, this recipe sounds so delicious!!
What size skillet did you use? These look awesome!!
i tried them, and they turned out to be super easy&tasty, i went a bit further and made them with chcoloate, put some icecream between 2 of them and got a delicious cold desert! (won a few hearts with it!)
I made these for breakfast today, they were SO GOOD! My new favorite for their easiness and deliciousness! Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
I made these this morning. It was just me so I cut the recipe in half, accidentally forgot to cut the sugar in half (oops!). It was sweet but I loved it, and I paired it with bacon instead of fruit the salt balanced out the sweetness. Delicious! Can’t wait to make it for my family 🙂
