Photography is one of my favorite hobbies in the world! I receive questions about my equipment, toy cameras and photoshop techniques almost daily. I thought it would be lots of fun to create a gigantic informational post for you about my favorite cameras, some tips and tricks and lots of links…. This post may be a tiny bit nerdy, but hopefully super helpful to my camera shopping pals. Enjoy!
My 'Real Camera'… I currently own a Canon EOS 40D. This is what I use to take most of the photos seen here on my blog. It's a great mid-level slr. I've been using it for a few years. The next upgrade I have planned is this beautiful camera. Super excited that the newest Canons have video capabilities.
I, primarily, use two lenses with my slr camera. I like to keep my camera bag extremely simple. First, this wide angle lens. Here are a couple example photos taken with this lens…
Any photo where i am holding the camera myself for the photo (excluding mirror photos, of course) is taken with this lens. It's very useful!
Next, I use a 50mm f/1.8 lens for portrait and product photos. Here are a few examples…
This lens is better for photos of people and it works great in lower light.
Another huge part of photography is PhotoShop. I use actions on lots of my photos to speed up the editing process and keep things consistent. The only actions I use are Totally Rad Actions. The set I own is "The Revenge". Here are some examples…
The first photo has Brooklyn (B&W) on it and the second photo has Lux and Punch-Out! If you've never used actions you can learn how through tutorials on their site. They're really helpful and can also be a great tool for anyone not super familiar with photoshop.
Next up…. my absolute favorite 'toy' camera. The Fuji Instax Mini! I have the chocolate one. It's probably the best thing I bought last year. I've already taken over 200 photos. It also comes in white, pink and blue. I take this with me almost every day! The photos look like business card sized polaroids….
SO adorable.
Polaroids are so much fun. All throughout high school until recent years I used this camera so much. Film isn't as inexpensive as it used to be, but it's cool that it's available again! You can read about it at The Impossible Project.
Hope you enjoyed seeing a peek at my favorite cameras! I had fun writing this post….. XO. elsie

This was really useful 🙂 Thanks! x
Thank you SO much for this post, Elsie! I love photography and had been wanting to compile a “wish list” of sorts. I’m also planning my wedding and LOVE the idea of the small Polaroids.
Thanks again! Someday my girlfriends and I are going to take a road trip down to your new shop 🙂

Thank you so much Elsie! It’s been superhelpful!! Really like that Fuji camera 🙂
xx
great post. i have been thinking about a wide angle lens. i have a 35mm/1.8 for my nikon and i love it.
i am on the edge of caving in and getting an instax mini. they are so cute.
I’m a camera/picture taking fool, so this was great. Thanks!
There’s nothing nerdy about informative! :> Thanks for the share and any post o’ yours with that many pix is also eye candy! :>
Thanks for sharing your camera information. I am a camera junkie and have been considering investing in something new and now you’ve gotten me thinking about the 40D. It may be just the ticket. Thanks!
i have a cannon rebel t1i that i am wanting to get more lenses for, i am really wanting a wide angle lense. thanks elsie, this was helpful!! i hope you are staying dry down that way!!
xoxo~Meg
the perfect post! and i like nerdy…
i have another question for you. do you shoot exclusively in manual or do you choose av/tv mode or something else? i know you used to shoot weddings and so i am assuming you shoot in manual, but just had to ask. your shots are always so very well composed and the exposure (indoor images) is perfect. i know that can be “fixed” in photoshop, but only to a certain point.
you definitely rock the cameras!!!
thanks for the tips! i was just wondering what action did you use for the instant photo of you and your instant photo camera. 🙂
I’m dreaming of the Canon 5d Mark II! Although, I’ll most likely have to go for half the price with the new Canon 60d. I appreciate you posting lenses too! I never can tell which ones are best for what! Definitely excited to check out the photoshop actions too! Thanks for posting! =D
oh wow, great collection you have there 🙂
I´d love to have a Fuji Instax Mini…but it´s hard to find where I live…but I wont give up 🙂
Have a beautiful day Sweety 🙂
thank you for this amazing post! I never ask bloggers photo questions b/c I assume they are sick of being asked, so I’ esp. grateful, esp for the lens info. Toy cameras rule!
<3 this post Elsie, thank you :)
I would love a Canon 40D lol I have a Pentax which is a DSLR and does the trick to take photos – I took like 200 over one week at holiday club lol. and took 100 at my Aunt’s wedding (she said she prefered my pics to the professional guys which floored me completely lol.)
Hey Elsie you are my hero!
Sounds like we use pretty similar gear! I have a Canon Rebel XSI instead of the 40D, but I also use the 10-22 and the 50 1.8. My addition to that gear is my dearest love, a 100mm 2.8 macro. And I do own a few more Polaroid cameras than just the one you mentioned…though I do also own that model myself! (And love your tattoo of it!) I also have an SX-70 Sonar and a plain ol’ boxy black OneStep 600, though.
totally off subject but I can’t wait to see what RVA brings to Renegade on saturday! I’m so excited to get down there!
<3
Such a helpful post! It’s always fun to see what a fellow camera-lover uses 🙂
Great tips! My point and shoot is getting pretty depressing so perhaps I’ll have to ask for a SLR for Xmas!
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have always wondered what type of gear you use and I especially wanted to know about how you edited your photos. They always look so wonderful. 🙂

Polaroids are fun fun fun I own a green 600 and then my canon is not as powerful as the one you have, but I sure love my boyfriends one he owns a 7D and the 50mm f/1.8 lens is definetl one of the faves in my case too. Fun fun post!!!
Awesome and helpful! I’m a camera-holic too and have many of the same cameras! That wide angle lens is my next buy!

Have fun taking more pics!

This is great – I LOVE these types of posts 🙂 I hope you do more with tips/tricks because you certainly are talented. I may have to ask for a digital SLR for Xmas (eep!) I have been looking into Photoshop, but I’m not sure which version to get? Which one do you use??

I love this post Elsie! I still have a print of a long Q&A post about photography that you’ve blogged years ago. It helped me very much.
What kind of camera bag do you use??

Thank you soo much for this! I’m searching for a new camera, and this helps me narrow down what lenses to buy. 😀

Thanks! This was really useful. I bought that 50mm lense just a week ago and I totally love it. The price is really good for that kind of quality. And I LOVE your polaroid-tattoo, I wish I had that too!
I love this post! Thank you Elsie 🙂
I’ve been needing to learn more about my camera and have been too scared to even start with photoshop! haha 🙂

Hey Elsie, what is the difference between each of the Fujifilm Instanx Mini cameras? They are all different prices. The chocolate, pink, blue, white…..

The fuji instax mini is totally where it’s at right now!
That tattoo is so rad!
I enjoyed this post. I like my 50mm lens too. It worked out great for me when I used in for a wedding a few years ago. I would love to get my hands on the other lens you were talking about. Thanks for all of your helpful tips and tricks.
Thanks so much for sharing your faves Elsie – so useful! I’m just about to buy my first DSLR and now have a little wish list myself 🙂
LOVE this post – thanks so much for sharing! Have you ever used a Holga before? I just got one and any tips you might have would be great! 🙂
I’m catching up on my blog reading and was glad I mentioned that I recognized you from your blog when I saw your booth at Renegade this weekend. I love free stuff! 🙂 I also got a great handbound book that I love. Thanks! Anyway, I was just curious…a while back you posted about building your own pinhole camera. Did you ever develop any pics from that camera? I didn’t see any follow up posts but I might have missed it. Thanks again!
i really really need to learn how to play around in photoshop. thanks for the inspiration <3
Ha! love when you call your canon slr your “real camera” I usually shoot with a holga and I’m the same way. Cool stuff!!
Hey Elsie!
Thanks so much for sharing with us your ‘tools of the trade’. Much appreciated! Those photoshop actions look great! I’m so inspired right now!
This is a great post! Right now I just have an old film Canon AE-1 (which is great if you have access to a dark room) and a Nikon point and shoot. Looking into getting a digital slr soon!
wow thank you! how helpful 🙂 those actions are great!
oh this is great. I love the old cameras. I prefer the photos were the colors are a bit washed off. About a year ago i started scanning all my old photos to my computer.

What a beautiful post – love all the photos!
I LOVE your blog! This post was SOOO helpful. I love takin random photos and reading about photography! You keep it so simple and yet so informative! Thanks once again!
Hey Elsie!
First of all, I am a guy who really enjoys your blog. It is perhaps the best lifestyle and all-around blog I have seen. So creative and urban. I don’t mean to freak you out by this, but I hope someday to meet a girl like you, that admires good style and embraces the beauty of life.
You have given me great ideas and a great hope for what someday my blog can be like, http://urbanmetropolisman.blogspot.com/ the boy version of course =] I pray that you are continually inspired by the inexhaustable variety of life.

Quick question, where do you find film at a reasonable price for your Fuji mini instamax? Love your pics!
i’m thinking about getting a toy camera, and this was really helpful. i love the photography posts!
i know you used to shoot weddings and so i am assuming you shoot in manual, but just had to ask. your shots are always so very well composed and the exposure indoor images is perfect. i know that can be “fixed” in photoshop, but only to a certain point..
I love this, and I have questions too!
I am considering the Canon T3i, and I am wondering how that compares to the 40D or even the 5D in quality, technology, etc. Can you help me?
Thanks for the wonderful post. I was thinking about getting the fugi instax mini for a long time now, but your post helped me make my final decision. Love it!
thanks for this post! i’m such an amateur when it comes to this stuff…but ever since my boyfriend got me a canon rebel t3i for my birthday, photography has become one of my favorite hobbies! this is really helpful! you’re so inspiring!! xoxo
Thanks for the tips! This is great! 🙂
Great post and beautiful selection of pictures. You’re website is so pretty.
I used a Fuji instax for my wedding guestbook. I put photo corners in the book ready for the guests to slip their photo in and write a comment. Was a huge success and something a bit different. I got the camera and film from ebay.
Thank you Elsie – its so refreshing to get camera advice that’s not too over the top for the non-technical kids like me 🙂
Toni. Xo

I use the 40D and love it. Check out my site!
Did you buy the Instax 7s or 25? I’m trying to decide which to get for my 10 year old. Thanks!
Hi Elsie. I follow you on your Instagram account, i am @soapy123 on Instagram. I have six different polaroids, one of them is the polaroid you had a picture of above, the one with the colorful strip on it, and i was wondering, where can i find film for it? Is it true that the film goes bad after a few years, and it will no longer work, or will it add character to the photos? I’ve gone to a store near my house for film, and the woman was very against me buying polaroid film, because she said it was all too old, so i was just wondering if it was her opinion that the photos would come out bad, or if it would really add character to the photos. (:
Love how simple you keep this! Great work.

I am a *huge* fan of your blog: next to Facebook and Instagram, I check your page more than any other website! Love the creativity and inspiration it provides me! Are you a Polaroid collector? I’m a collector of vintage cameras – I have more than I have room for. My “real” camera is a Canon Rebel T1i. I’ve got a few FD lenses (no adapter yet, tho; I’ve yet to find anyone in favor of them), a 75-300mm and my favorite, a Holga 60mm lens. It is lovely, I encourage you to check it out.
Anyway, bravo on the site, keep calm and inspire on!!
waaauw Love the blog and love the photos!
Really coool cameras you got there 🙂

Love, Ine
I love your blog! I have seen a lot of your posts on Pinterest! I have recently started taking pictures with my new Holga 120N, and I was wondering where you get your pictures developed. I haven’t been able to find a place that will develop my 120 film.
Thanks!
I just started reading your blog a few months ago, and when I was going through your older posts I immediately fell in love with the concept of the Instax Mini and passed that fact onto my husband (an excellent amateur photographer). He studied up on this awesome little camera, got me the Instax Mini 25 for Christmas (along with the most adorable bowling bag carrier for it!) and I couldn’t be happier with it. Thank you so much for introducing me into the wonderful world of ‘toy’ cameras…..the Holga is next on my list!
i have that charley harper book. its too cool!
Awesome! I have a Nikon D60..still need to play with a bit more but I want to buy some lenses and I found a TON of fun accessories I put on my camera wishlist [ http://www.skinnyscoop.com/list/jackie/gift-guide-for-the-asipiring-photographer ]…any other must have suggestions, or shops to check out? I reallllyyyy want a polaroid too 🙂
p.s. i LOVE your blog!! …kinda obsessed!

This was really helpful! I have always wanted to get in to photography, it just seems like such an expensive hobby
Next thing I’ll buy is this Fuji camera! I crazy about polaroids!
Thank you! I really enjoyed reading this. Such great tips!
Love your blog. Full of information! Thanks!
SO helpful! Would you recomend a Polaroid JoyCam
Hi Elsie…your blog is inspirational! Am hoping you might share with me what program you use to write text and draw on your photos!? Thankyou …Alison
Hey Elsie! I was wondering do you have any “secret sources” for instax camera film? I love my little camera but I have run out of film and it is SO expensive to buy.
Thanks! Love your blog (:
great tips, thank you x
thank you so much for the info. I love totally rad actions. They are amazing! I was just wondering if you get decent editing with photoshop elements, or if I need to purchase cs5 or so? I use many different editing programs, actions and presets. I can take amazing pictures I just need to know the helpful hints of how to really make your pictures pop. I also use Lightroom 3.
i really love your cameras! especially the polaroid one, wish i had one! oh and your blog is love! ♥
CUTE!
Hi Elsie! I’ve completely fallen in love with your blog! Every time I check it, I find new, fresh posts about the most interesting topics. I absolutely adore your photographs. Your photography has inspired me to try and take photos myself, and I’m thinking of getting an instant camera. In terms of appearance, I love the onestep polaroid 1000, but I’m unsure if it would be the best choice, specially for a newbie like me. I’ve read the post about your favourite cameras (Which I loved!), but I would still like an opinion. What camera would you recommend?
I absolutely love your blog…I want to start one for my poetry….does it cost to do this?
Thanks for the link to “the impossible Project” website, I was out thrifting with my friend a few days ago and I found an old Polaroid Land One Step and I’ve been dying to use it!

Just now reading this, but still super helpful! I’m REALLY hoping to get that Fuji Instax this year. And now they have the Fuji Wide! I love the way they look and have been really wanting a photo wall with just instant pictures. Love this post. 🙂
This is great and very helpful post. I just love your blog and I have been wondering for a while about how you designed your template. I dont know where to ask you so i decided to ask here. I have been looking everywhere for a template how did you make yours?
I just found this website where you can download plenty of actions for free, some of them are pretty rad! You should check it out.
Oh, and I can’t spend a day without going on your blog 🙂

Hey
love the list, but what kind of polaroid is the blue one at the very top of the list?
thanks
You need a 35mm camera so badly! You seem like you would enjoy one. I love my cannon AE1 amd my Chinon CS. film is so unique and you can do a lot of things with film that look way better than it does when it is photoshopped!
OMG!Your cameras are amazing!! I love photography and for Christmas this year i got a Panasonic Lumix fz48 and i love it to bits! Then recently i bought a Polaroid camera but i haven’t used it much as the film is expensive so i don’t want to waste it also the pictures i did take turned out to dark :/ But i still love it!
I love this post! I have an old-school Nikon F from the early 1960’s – it was a birthday present from my incredible father. But, I have been longing to use a polaroid camera again! I have these amazing memories of snapping polaroid photos with my mum when I was little… Also, I just started a journal and I just feel it needs polaroid photos to complete it. Long story short, I just purchased the Fujifilm Instax Mini thanks to all of the shout-outs you give it on this blog. I am super, super excited for it to arrive!!! I think myself and my BF will have lots of fun using it as a fun memory-keeper 🙂
I am also using Fujifilm and probably I am a camera rookie that’s why i did not know about the one you mentioned. Would love to see it in store sometimes. I have recently started taking some interest in cameras and this list is going to be very useful.Thanks.
You’re really kind sharing your knowledge! Thanks!
i like this camera, also the shoes show on the pic.
your blog is AMAZING! your style is unique! LOVED IT! keep it going, you are really something else!
hi,
love your photos..just wondering how do you make it so sharp? thanks..
I’m using a 5D Mark II right now, and it’s amazing! My favorite lens is the 70-200 2.8 IS Telephoto lens. It gives SUCH a creamy focus!
Here’s a link to some photos I took with my favorite set up:

Lovely cameras!
I just don’t understand how anyone can afford a polaroid these days though! Isn’t it like 30 bucks for 20 pictures? Way too expensive…

Hello from the Philippines! 🙂 I love your blog. And also, you look like Zoey Deschanel and Colbie Smulders combined. 🙂
i used to have that same typewriter and I loved it.It was broken so I gave it away before a move but I wish I hadn’t. Do you actually type with it? Totally not the point of this whole thing, I know, but it caught my attention
Your posts are so interesting, inspiring and helpful! I’m hoping to buy a Canon Rebel T2i sometime in the near future….. wish list wish list!
I have a fuji instax too! Mine is white and pink(:

I’m looking for some nice looking old camera, some with some old tattered looking leather cases would be great too! Don’t have to be in working order I just want to have a few on display having around and on a few shelves in my photo editing space! If anybody knows of anywhere apart from the obvious, ebay for where to purchase some I’d much appreciate it!
Oh yay! So excited I found this post. I’ve been looking to get a new camera since my last one turned out to be a flop. Thanks so much for making this post. It’s so very helpful! 🙂

That’s kind of hilarious. Those are my two wish-list items right now, a 50mm f1.8 for my lovely Nikon, and an Instax mini in chocolate! I’m dying to decorate it to make it look like an actual chocolate! Cutest thing ever! XD
– Ah, the beauty of itansnt pictures. Thinking about it, the very first thing I’d love to itansntly capture is a shot of my grandmother, my mother, and I together 3 generations within one, itansnt and permanent picture. I’d definitely give it to my grandma. My grandma as an adult was always into Polaroid films and scrapbooking, but when she moved to the US her family in the Philippines stole some of her cameras and even some of her scrapbooks. She’s here, and her walls are FILLED with her old pictures. It’s just a surprise she has no picture of her present self on her wall, yknow? I’m sure she’d be joyous for another, and new, picture in her room. And, I’ve always thought seeing generations within one picture is beautiful. (:Goodluck to all! It’d be wonderful to win this, though. <3
Well Carl,There are many readers inudcling myself that look forward to what you write ..Your right on with the DP1, the more I use it, the more I love it and depend on it. Pushing to 1600-3200 is easy and still provides great images .Waiting on your next project .take care Don
Michelle Sanchez – The first picture I would take with this would be pre-deployment pirtecus of my husband with our newborn; the second picture that would be taken is the day my husband leaves for his 4th deployment, and finally the last picture that would complete this collection would be a picture of my husband returning 7 months from now and the first embrace between him and our daughter who will be a year when he returns. Any old camera can capture these moments, but winning this camera would allow for my husband to take these photos of him, me, and our darling daughter with him and allow for him to save space in his packs.
Danielle – My daughter now 5 is innNNNn to music, girl music! Wants it pliyang all the time! With each year she seems to come with a new signature dance, and this year it’s a hip wiggle. Whether school friends, funny cartoons or just her own imaginative fun inside she has come up with a sassy little worm wiggle. With her hands to the sky, face full of fun and sass, and her hips wigglin’ like a worm she moves in little circles. And one of these days I’d love to catch it in a photo. If I were to win, thats what I would photograph, her year of hip wigglin’ innocence and fun.

What a great post! I look forward the rest of this series! While I’d love to upgrade to an SLR, I’m not sure it’s in the immediate future. Tips for getting the most out of your point and shoot might be a great idea for a future post. I love your blog!
Which mini so you use, I googled it and there are several… I am very interested in getting one of these 🙂
Thanks for this post! I loved reading this!Makes me feel like I have so much to learn!
Thanks for the post. I take picture of my hair accessories for my shop and I’m going to try your tips.

Robin Bhat Posted on October 13, 2011Long Live Kishore Kumar.A poem ( To a Skylark’, by Shelley) to recall his voice, whose stinras will always be one of our most cherished companions, alway with us, whenever we need him:Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!Bird thou never wert,That from heaven, or near it,Pourest thy full heartIn profuse stinras of unpremeditated art.Higher still and higherFrom the earth thou springestLike a cloud of fire; The blue deep thou wingest,And singing still dost soar, and soaring ever singest. In the golden lightningOf the sunken sun,O’er which clouds are bright’ning,Thou dost float and run,Like an unbodied joy whose race is just begun. The pale purple evenMelts around thy flight;Like a star of heavenIn the broad daylightThou art unseen, but yet I hear thy shrill delight Keen as are the arrowsOf that silver sphereWhose intense lamp narrowsIn the white dawn clearUntil we hardly see -we feel that it is there. All the earth and airWith thy voice is loud,As, when night is bare,From one lonely cloudThe moon rains out her beams, and heaven is overflowed. What thou art we know not; What is most like thee? From rainbow clouds there flow notDrops so bright to seeAs from thy presence showers a rain of melody.Like a poet hiddenIn the light of thought,Singing hymns unbidden,Till the world is wroughtTo sympathy with hopes and fears it heeded not:Like a high-born maidenIn a palace tower,Soothing her love-ladenSoul in secret hourWith music sweet as love, which overflows her bower:Like a glow-worm goldenIn a dell of dew,Scattering unbeholdenIts aerial hueAmong the flowers and grass, which screen it from the view:Like a rose emboweredIn its own green leaves,By warm winds deflowered,Till the scent it givesMakes faint with too much sweet these heavy-winged thieves:Sound of vernal showersOn the twinkling grass,Rain-awakened flowers,All that ever wasJoyous, and clear, and fresh, thy music doth surpass.Teach us, sprite or bird,What sweet thoughts are thine:I have never heardPraise of love or wineThat panted forth a flood of rapture so divine.Chorus hymenealOr triumphal chauntMatched with thine would be allBut an empty vaunt A thing wherein we feel there is some hidden want. What objects are the fountainsOf thy happy strain? What fields, or waves, or mountains? What shapes of sky or plain? What love of thine own kind? what ignorance of pain? With thy clear keen joyanceLanguor cannot be:Shadow of annoyanceNever came near thee:Thou lovest, but ne’er knew love’s sad satiety.Waking or asleep,Thou of death must deemThings more true and deepThan we mortals dream,Or how could thy notes flow in such a crystal stream? We look before and after,And pine for what is not:Our sincerest laughterWith some pain is fraught; Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.Yet if we could scornHate, and pride, and fear;If we were things bornNot to shed a tear,I know not how thy joy we ever should come near.Better than all measuresOf delightful sound,Better than all treasuresThat in books are found,Thy skill to poet were, thou scorner of the ground!Teach me half the gladnessThat thy brain must know,Such harmonious madnessFrom my lips would flowThe world should listen then, as I am listening now!
I worked yeaetrdsy, then Gigglez and I, since we were alone for the evening, went to Hometown Buffet. Why do all that cooking for just two? With the feast filling our bellies, I felt that Spanish Coffee’s sounded good.We went up to the Back Alley to see some of our favorite turkeys.I got to shoot pool with one of the pool icons of the Back Alley, Chuck. After four or five years of hanging out there, this was the first time that I have played him. It was a joy to lose to him. (Gigglez got him though. hehhe)We packed up our stuff and a few good friends arrived, causing me to unpack again, play some more pool and sing the best version of War Pigs I have EVER done.Once I was done with the song it was off to Black Friday shopping. Oh the adventures of that torture Home to collapse for several hours.Tonight it will be the weekly radio discussion and back to the bar for work.
