Emma’s Favorite Winter Skin Products

Emma's winter skin product favoritesWinter is here. What I love most about winter is when we have a light snow that is beautiful but still easy to drive in, and of course, the holidays! What I dislike about winter is the early sunset (it's so hard to take photos after 5pm!), and my skin gets weird during the cold months.

Growing up I had oily skin that was often prone to breakouts. You know, average teenager stuff. And for a long time I didn't really get out of the mentality of, "I have oily skin." But over the years my skin has changed, and now I get really dry, flaky skin sometimes. Especially in the winter months. So, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite winter skin products with you.

Day moisturizer1. Josie Maran Daily Moisturizer.

I actually use this all year round. I just apply it a little more liberally in the winter months. I wear this everyday under my makeup (if I wear makeup that day). It's light, smells great, and has plenty of SPF, which is important in the summer for obvious reasons. But I think wearing a light sunscreen in the winter is just as important since the sun doesn't just go away during those months, and with snow you can still get sunburned (or at least, I can) from reflections.

Foot creme2. Burt's Bees Coconut Foot Crème.

Confession: I use this on my hands sometimes too. I don't use this everyday, but probably a couple times a week I'll rub some of this on my feet after a shower before bed. I also rub it into my hands and elbows. I mean, it's already on my hands from rubbing it on my feet, so why not? (I'm not weird, you're weird.) This stuff smells like vacation and makes my feet less scratchy. Love it.

Night moisturizer3. Josie Maran Infinity Cream.

I swear this is not an ad for Josie Maran. I just like two of their products. For me, this is the nighttime version of my daily moisturizer. After washing my face, I'll apply a little bit of this to any dry areas before bed. It's pretty thick, so a little goes a long way. And it kind of smells like oranges, so that's cool. I really think this is the main product that has been helping me avoid dry, flaky skin this season so far.

Great for chapped lips4. Smith's Rosebud Salve.

I use a variety of lip products in the winter, so there isn't just one that I swear by. But currently I am loving this stuff! I like this version of applicator (as opposed to ones you have to dip your finger into in order to apply, seems kind of unhygienic), and this stuff helps protect my lips from cold air and wind. It's like a shield. It is glossy but not tinted, so if you want color, you'll have to wear something under this. But for everyday use I really like it.

Face cleanser wipes5. Yes To Coconut Cleansing Wipes.

OK, so you really should wash your face every night. I know, I know. But sometimes I don't. I get lazy. It's bad. So I like to have these as an alternative so I can remove at least most of my makeup quickly. And these feel pretty hydrating compared to other cleansing wipes, so I prefer these in the winter months. If you can't tell, I'm also a sucker for anything coconut scented. I love it!

What about you? Do you have favorite products you switch to when the seasons change? xo. Emma

  • I’ve tried the Josie Maran argan oil before (and loved it!) but not these products. I’ve been looking for a new night cream, so I’ll definitely give the second one a try. Thanks so much for the recommendations, Emma!

  • I hear ya on the laziness with washing your face! I ran out of wipes (which by the way I’m so getting Yes To Coconut Wipes!), so I used one of my son’s baby wipes. Yeah, I’m classy. 😉

  • “I’m not weird, you’re weird.”
    haha!
LOVE IT! i love when you guys write like that! mostly you Emma!

thanks for the tips! i need to start caring more for my face.
i dont wear heavy make up at all, heck i dont even wear eye liner or mascara but i should care more.

the only lotion im using for my face is Nivea soft cream and it works but its nice to hear opinions about other products that help.

    thanks!

  • I’ll definitely have to try out those products, as I have a very sensitive skin and it requires a lot of care during winter.

As for me, I use a simple trick – I mix a few drops of argan oil with my regular moisturizer, so I don’t really need a special one for winter. It instantly becomes more rich (and I know that the oil I add is of best quality). I also wear a lot of Carmex and use coconut oil on my whole body – it tends to get really dry when it’s cold outside.

  • Josie maran saves lives (well, skin) during winter!

GRWM: Everyday Make-up routine + IPAD MINI GIVEAWAY

  • Yay! I love beauty and skincare related posts! My skins gets crazy dry during winter time. I recently bought this heavy cream intensive hand repair balm by the brand cake and I love it! It’s so rich and creamy and smells like icing! Plus, it’s made with lots of good-for-you oils and made without bad-for-you ingredients. I repurchased skin drink by Lush, and it’s a total saviour. Super duper intensely moisturizing, without feeling greasy. And year round I like to use good ol’ vaseline for my lips!

  • Ooh, I just got a free sample of the Josie Maran Infinity Oil (“free” meaning I spent a ton of money at Sephora and accrued a lot of VIB points) and I can’t wait to try it now!

She does great makeup too–her Coconut Water Gelee blush is the best I’ve ever tried. So so good!

  • Thank you SO much for sharing these products Emma. Does Elsie have a similar (dry) skin type? Does she use similar products? Love when you guys share your beauty or skin care routines 🙂

  • Hey Emma! I too am often tired at the end of a long day and just want a quick cleanse. And for some reason I just have never enjoyed washing my face in a basin. You splash everywhere, the water runs down your elbows and gets shirtsleeves wet, in all a mess….and not a particularly beautiful one 😉 Anywho, I also suffer from dry skin too and have been using Aveeno make up removing cloths, they are great too!

  • Hi Emma! I’ve never tried the coconut cleansing wipes; I normally just use Neutrogena makeup remover wipes when I was so lazy by the end of the day. The moisturizer is also important during the winter month when my oily face suddenly get so dry ( don’t know why). Thanks for sharing though.

  • I too rub (sometimes) my elbows with the foot crème I use.
I have awfully dry skin specially during the winter, and I am used to washing my face with regular soap several times a day, which makes me a bit of a skin murderer (because I’m just dumb). So someone told me to use my regular summer sunscreen during dry windy winter days in my face to protect my skin, and it was the best advice ever.
I use products of a local brand called Dermaglós, which is awesome.

  • I was just at my dermatologist office this week and this is what she recommended especially if you have sensitive skin… Aveeno foaming face wash… for moisture lotion… CeraVe PM.. the 3 active ingredients are Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramide and Niacinamide. When I put this on the first time my face felt so smooth and nice… it’s available at most stores too and it’s not too pricey… I got mine at Walmart.

  • So glad you shared this! My skin gets crazy dry in the winter and I’m always on the hunt for new products, can’t wait to try that foot creme.

  • I love love LOVE that all of these products are cruelty free! My fiancee and I decided about a year ago to not use any body or home products that test on animals, and it’s SO nice to see ethical products featured (now if only I could afford them, haha).

  • I love coconut scents too! For the winter I recommend The Body Shop’s coconut body butter. I use it for my legs, arms.. basically anywhere dry and it seriously keeps me moisturized all day.

  • Mmm coconut scents are divine! I actually use straight up coconut oil during the winter months because I prefer natural products without the chemicals. It has a weird texture that takes a bit to get used to, but I love it! The biggest bummer is that it doesn’t smell like the coconut to which we’ve grown accustomed. But you can’t beat the toxin free all day moisture.

  • I love the Josie Maran products too. I use both of these products and the argan oil. They seem to be the best thing to help my very dry skin and hair.

  • Love coconut oil mixed with an eo for body but any coconut on my face breaks me out.
My skin has gone from oily to combination with some dryness. I’ve been using Pratima spf and H.Gillerman. Neroli oil. I love both of these. I just ordered Arcona Chamomile balm to hopefully help with redness & extra protection walking in the cold.
For lips, if I remember, Meow Meow Tweet’s balm. Love their natural deo too.

  • I can totally relate to oily turned dry flaky skin, cause thats exactly whats happening to me..facial wipes are the saviors on lazy days.. will check out the josie maran products..

  • I’ve never tried this lip product but a great healing balm i use every winter is called Aquaphor. It feels AMAZING and works fast. An at home and natural skin healer/soother as well is olive oil! I work at a neopolitan pizza shop and all of my female coworkers and i often lather our hands in it and then put disposable gloves on – works like a charm every time!

  • I’m with you on having to remember that my skin is much drier than it used to be in my teens and 20s! When I’m feeling dry I add a few drops of Aveda’s Beautifying oil to my regular moisturizer, it’s such a lifesaver. It’s good for the rest of the body and hair too and smells amazing. 🙂

  • I have the dryest skin ever (think fish scales) and winter is so harsh on it. I’ve fallen in love with creamy lotion from Sun Valley Remedies. It’s organic and a little bit goes a long way. Here’s to keeping our skin healthy.

  • I use foot cream on my hands too sometimes and it usually works very well! I love coconut products, but I’ve never seen the Yes to Coconut line before! I hope they bring it to Canada soon, because I could use some new face wipes 🙂

  • I have very sensitive skin as well and this is what I do too, mix a few drops of oil into my regular moisturizer. My go-to oil used to be argan as well, but I’ve switched to macademia oil now. Love it, it makes my skin so soft!

  • I love a lotion called Backyard Bees. It’s made by women who live in my old neighborhood. It’s beeswax and honey and coconut oil and all sorts of amazing natural ingredients. It’s my favorite for year round moisture.

  • I love the rose salve too. I have the tin and it lasts forever (OK, 30 months, but that’s still a really long time). For the winter, I switch exclusively to oil cleansers because they are the best. My skin needs the extra hydration anyway. Plus every step of the cleanse is a mini relaxing ritual I look forward to daily.

  • I’m a big fan of Yes To Blueberries, especially in the winter. I also need to moisturize my hands frequently in the winter – for that I like Jergen’s ultra healing, and Burt’s Bees almond milk beeswax hand cream when they’re really dry.
