We just adore whiskey gingers during the hot summer months. I had a few of these while on our trip to Hawaii last month so I think they will now be a "beach drink" in my mind forevermore. But I don't live near a beach. So I'll just take the beach memories for now. It is easy enough to combine store-bought ginger ale and whiskey for a quick whiskey ginger. But I love this recipe because the ginger taste is so much stronger! All you need to make your own homemade whiskey gingers is ginger syrup (recipe below), whiskey, club soda and if you're feeling fancy some candied ginger for garnish (instructions below). Let's get our ginger on folks!
Ginger Syrup, makes about 1 1/2 cups.
Needed: 1 cup water, 2 cups sugar, 2 cups grated and thinly sliced ginger root.
Grate and slice up your ginger, set aside. In a pot combine the water and sugar. Over medium heat stir until the sugar is dissolved. Now add in the ginger and simmer on low/medium heat for 30 minutes. Allow this to cool slightly and strain the syrup, reserving the ginger slices. Store this in a seal container in your refrigerator for up to a month.
Easy Candied Ginger, makes about 1 cup
Needed: the reserved ginger slices from making ginger syrup and 1/3 cup sugar.
Rinse off the ginger slices and pat dry. Dip each in the sugar and place on a paper towel. Allow these to dry out for a couple of hours. Use to garnish drinks or other foods. You can just eat these too, but they are quite strong. You have been warned.
To make your whiskey gingers combine 3-4 tablespoons ginger syrup, 2 cups club soda, and a shot of whiskey. Add ice and garnish with a candied ginger slice. You can adjust these to be as strong as you like. Or you can leave the whiskey out and still have a lovely ginger drink.

These cocktails are RIGHT up my alley!
But hold up one second – 2 cups of club soda to 1 shot of whiskey? That can’t be right or it would be the weakest drink out there. Maybe just the other ingredients in the glass first and then top with soda?
Can’t wait to try (a much stronger π version!
Yum! Whiskey Gingers are always my first drink out on the town. I’ll have to try making my own for a night in with fresh ginger now. π
I don’t like whiskey…but that ginger syrup looks amazing!
Hmm that’s a dilemma. I don’t really like whiskey, it burns my whole mouth. I swear, I can feel it going down the esophagus. However, and here comes a good however, I pretty much adore the lemony taste of ginger. I use it in my teas, my food, my sweet delights and so on. I really wonder what this combination would be like. Probably something like KABAAAM for my tongue and brain! π

Yum! Now if the weather would just heat up I could make some of these and go enjoy them on the roof!

A: yea.. it really does depend on your glass size. We don’t like to make these super strong… but that part is totally up to your taste! XO

Oh these sounds great. Gin and Ginger have been my drink of choice for sometime now. whiskey may become a new contender. Also if you haven’t tried the gin and ginger ale aka gin buck, you need to.
I like too ginger syrup and cold light limonade(without sugar)

I’m sorry for being truly ignorant, but I’m confused by how you grate and then slice the ginger root. I’m not experienced with working with ginger, so I guess what I don’t understand is what you’re using to grate the ginger. Please forgive me if this is a really stupid question. This recipe looks yummy though, so I really want to try making Jack and Gingers with it.
YUM!
Sounds like a tasty spin on a Moscow Mule. Yum.
Mmmm! Ginger syrup has been on my list of things to make this summer so I’ll have to try it out soon! I made rhubarb – brown sugar syrup the other day and it was super wonderful with sparking water!

My Question: Do you peel the ginger first? and what is the easiest way to do that (there are so many nooks and crannies)
Thanks!!
I love a “Jimmy & Ginger”, this sounds lovely! Have you tried it with Scotch? just wondering if it would taste the same as with Irish whiskey
Looks good! Never had one, will have to give it a try.

My hubby and I make a similar drink. It’s called a dark and stormy – we use craft ginger ale and spiced rum (Kraken is our fav)poured over ice. I’m excited to make a dark & stormy using your syrup recipe!
Sounds like a blast! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Hi, the article is so wonderful, I am interested in it. I will pay attention to your articles.
Just made one of these to start off my weekend. So refreshing, as it has finally hit the 80s here in Oregon π

My Question: Do you peel the ginger first? and what is the easiest way to do that (there are so many nooks and crannies)
I peeled mine, and an easy trick is to take a metal spoon and run it across the peel. It will scrape off easily! Hope that helps π
I am making this tonight! I instantly got a craving as soon as I read this post, so I am taking the opportunity on my day off to make some ginger syrup. π
I don’t love whiskey too. But I love ginger. Looks really tempting!!!
Very good post. You blog is amazing. Thanks for information.
