Elsie and I recently acquired these Fabric Fun dye sticks. We immediately started playing around with them to see what we could create. Elsie made this adorable polka dot journal; and I created some oversized throw pillows. These dye sticks are super easy to use and can allow you to create any kind of design you want onto fabric. Here's how to use them:1. Supplies: Dye sticks, natural fabric (cottons work great), plain paper and an iron. 2. Use the dye sticks to color your design directly onto the fabric. 3. Place the plain paper on top of the color and iron for 20-30 seconds. 4. You can see that the dye will set as you heat it; so you may need to use a few sheets of paper so you don't smear your colors everywhere as you go.We are not too sure how well the colors hold up to being washed, as we both choose projects that didn't require any washing. But we just LOVE the whimsical look these can create—Fabric Fun dye sticks would be a great project to try out with kiddos too. xo. emma and elsie
This would be great for myself or for kids to make their own throws for their bedroom. I wonder if they would have these at Michael’s. If they do I will let you know.
I looked it up and they say the drawings are permanent once heat set so maybe you could try throwing the pillows in the dryer, and maybe heating the journal with a hair dryer? Just a thought.
Did you know that Crayola makes a set of fabric crayons that work like these?? I found mine in the display racks for all their products at a state side hobby store. I had great fun making little bibs as shower gifts. 🙂
as i recall, they last pretty well. i was super into using them in the late 80s and many a t-shirt held up after repeated kid-strength washing and wearing. (i particularly remember a minnie mouse iron on pattern that i colored in).
For a moment I thought I had these, but then i realized I just have normal oil-pastels from the me brand – so dissapointing! This makes suck cute projects! 🙂
Ok i need to comment on this..I have been following your blog for a few months now..when i found it (through Stumbleupon)i was amazed at how much of me was portrayed in this blogsite…the fashion, the colours, the creativity…It just inspires me to be more…well, like me! so i love creating things and not too long ago i found these fabric dye sticks! omw i was so excited to start using them..i made prints for two tops (they look amazing,i love the rawness about it) and i still have so many ideas.. So then i see THIS post and im more convinced than ever that you, Elsie, are a woman after my own heart. <3 Thank you for your beautiful and wonderful blog.
I’ve used these on a silk scarf to rub “memories” while I travel. Once you stop feeling a bit goofy stopping to pull out your crayons, it becomes a fabulous souvenir.
