I can't remember where I found this floral slip, but I've been waiting for the perfect see through dress to pair it with. Today I am working at my shop. When I work my myself I play the "Arcade Fire only" playlist all day. Speaking of, I'm pretty sure we need some new playlists in Red Velvet…. any musical suggestions? We prefer to skip between "dreamy" playlists that consist of mostly Beach House and Jenny Lewis type songs and "fun" playlists that consist of mostly The Flaming Lips and Animal Collective type bands. We need some fresh tunes… Let me know what you think we might like!

Outfit Details: Dress c/o Chic Wish, Floral Slip and Leather Belt/Vintage, Key Necklace/Self Made, Shoes/Jessica Simpson Collection, Bag/Steve Madden.

Lee Hazlewood’s stuff with Nancy SInatra is good mellow listenin’ too…

  • What a beautiful outfit! For the last couple of months I have pretty much had Bob Dylan on repeat… I always seem to play something to death for a few months and then not want to listen to it again for a couple of years. A bit sad really!

  • Jeez Louise, that are many suggestions… Might check some of them out by myself. 🙂

I totally recommend ‘Two Door Cinema Club’ and ‘Young Rebel Set’. Both bands are from Great Britain. I love them. 🙂

    XOXO.

  • I’m totally in love with that slip! I love Arcade Fire! Whenever I work by myself I usually put on my ‘Death Cab for Cutie’ or ‘Postal Service’ radio station on Pandora. It’s the perfect background music to work to! <3

    XOXO

  • I love this post! Finding some GREAT music. I always love Kings of Convenience and Surfer Blood is also excellent. Loving The Morning Benders, too.

  • Love the outfit!
You should check out Youthsounds. It’s my friends band, but they are actually really good. I take photos for the band (The first EP cover is a picture I took/edited of my Sister) sometimes, but they are also genuinely one of my favorite groups. I like the first EP better than the newer one, It’s called The Bit Parts. They sort of remind me of a mix between The Naked and Famous, The Bird and The Bee (Another FANTASTIC Band!) and more recently Ellie Goulding. They don’t really sound like any of those people though… *sigh* I’m really bad at describing music.

  • I adore that slip. So, so much.

    Jenny Lewis is my fave!
    Suggestions: Rilo Kiley
Kate Nash is super fun and girly
Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

i listen to deerhunter at work! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weKc_xOrM3k&feature=related

Maybe you could try listening to Eliza Doolittle?

  • Oh I love this outfit! Wow great suggestions on music..I second Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Florence and the Machine and how about my new favorite Foster the People? 🙂 -Lo

  • I love She & Him with Zooey Deschanel too. Zooey is so cute and well dressed also 🙂 I also recently bought the soundtrack cd from the movie Marie Antoinette and I love it! Classic music combined with some new songs… yet it might be a bit overwhelming, the music is very intense.

Putumayo: Women of the World cd is MAGICAL. I know you’ll definitely love it! I have this cd in my collection for over 6 years now and I still play it at least once a week. You’ve to check it out!

  • I’m on a bit of a fifties kick at the moment so i’ve been listening to Connie Francis, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline all the time. If you’re looking for something more modern She and Him are amazing (if you haven’t already listened to them).

  • Hey Elsie, I’m gonna suggest older stuff, for contemporary music I’d say just head over to Pitchfork http://pitchfork.com/ or Stereogum http://stereogum.com/

For lazy Sunday mornings or quiet dusky evenings, Karen Dalton (amazing 60s NY folk-revivalist singer/songwriter, who Joanna Newsom supposedly part-modeled her singing voice on).

Something higher-energy – Selda (sometimes listed as Selda Bagcan). Turkish 60s psychedelia, an amazing female singer who reintepreted

Tom Tom Club would, I imagine, be great to play in your shop. Fronted by Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads. Check out ‘Genius of Love’ in particular. So much fun.

And finally, to play at parties, Lizzie Mercier Descloux. She was buds with Patti Smith but is more from the wordbeat genre, but I think it’s quite disco-y. If you play her after Donna Summer’s ‘I feel love’ you get the most packed dancefloor – and also good for dancing round the studio like a loon!

Oh, and I have to recommend Orange Juice – post-punk band from Scotland in the 70s/80s, ‘Rip It Up’ is such a fab song.

Enjoy, I’m going to check out some of the suggestions in your comments now too, love finding out about new music.

    Beth x

  • Hi Elsie,

Arcade fire, Flaming lips and beach house are some of my favourite bands, too! Great taste 😉
You might also enjoy these, which I heart very much (in no particular order):

Florence and the machine (she is amazing!! Very dramatic), Sufjan Stevens (genius), Belle & Sebastian, Fanfarlo, Beirut, James Blake, The hidden cameras, Azure Ray, Coco Rosie (quirky and wonderful), Bon Iver, The XX, Badly Drawn Boy, Grizzly Bear (their song ‘two weeks’ is unbelievably fantastic!), Patrick Wolf (especially the last album has a lot of happy songs!), Owen Pallet (he did some of the string arrangements for Arcade fire and makes beautiful music himself, too!), Destroyer, Fleet foxes, Deer hunter.

All the best and greetings from Vienna,
    Julia

  • Recently got into ‘The Whitest Boy Alive’ – very fun but mellow. Also, you should check out ‘Everything Everything’ – their whole album rocks!

  • I think this may be my favorite outfit of yours yet! Sheer+ floral+ crochet= heaven!!!

    ♥ Gina Michele

  • I’m a big fan of She & Him, and also Los Campesinos, but they’re a bit sweary. And Ingrid Michaelson, The Smiths, and Sarah Harmer.

  • I love your messy pigtails! They are my go-to summer hairstyle 🙂

  • Charlotte gainsbourg! Sings in English, but her music has a French touch…plus she’s the daughter of legend serge gainsbourg.

  • this is a very cute outfit! i just wish the current weather over here would allow me to be wearing something summery like this. 🙂 but i’m hoping it will be sunny around here soon.

and for some fresh tunes – try EDITORS (loooove them, especially listening to them at night while sitting on the front porch and watching the sunset), frank turner (<3), the submarines, or anything the klaxons. 🙂 oh, and if you want to try something german - please check MIA. it's great music 🙂

    Iron & Wine
    Angus & Julia Stone
    the Decemberists
    Bon Iver

    LOVE the outfit! So cute!

    xo Shannon

  • Try checking out The Damnwell’s “No One Listens to the Band Anymore” album. It’s a fantastic mix of fun, summery songs and slightly more serious, a bit darker ones. Also try “Civilian” from Baltimore-based band Wye Oak. It’s super dreamy.

  • my personal loves right now are the belle brigade, the lonely forest & fences. perfect background music for summer 🙂

  • This outfit is perfect!
My favorite artists are Florence & the machine, Adele (get rid of rolling in the deep, its overplayed), mock & toof, amy winehouse, the kinks…. hope i helped!

    <3 Sarah

  • My summer is all Mumford and Sons and The Decemberists.

Love the crochet look, and I think fall fashion will be all about crochet as well. This is such a wonderful trend!

  • Just a suggestion but I would love if you added music to your blog. I love to hear what other people listen & I usually enjoy it as well. I am always open to new artist =)

    Thanks for listening!

  • Lately, I’ve been listening to Broken Bells (that’s James Mercer (of the Shins) with Danger Mouse) and the Dodos a lot. Of Montreal is always great for something more upbeat and fun. You should check out their new album if you haven’t heard it.

  • You look great Elsie!

I’m listening to a lot of dreamy music lately. My favorites have been Dark Dark Dark and The Raveonettes.

  • I’m a huge Ben Sollee fan and in the summer I turn into a granny and LOVE Sting. Also love Ray Lamontagne in the summer or anytime really! And of course a little Janet Klein and her Parlour boys is super funtastic but those are all oldies, am loving these suggestions and will spend the evening with them and itunes!!!! By the way this is the first time commenting on your blog. I heart it. It makes my mornings, my evenings my afternoons. And offers me such inspiration for really living MY life!

  • Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles (a very cute local band from MN)
    Best Coast
    Lykke Li
    Bon Iver
    Cloud Cult
    Tristen
    M. Ward

  • Oooo I would recommend this brand new band “Red-Elephant”… They are a two piece Irish/Liverpudlian rock band.. They have such variety in their stuff that there is always something there for every occasion… Also “Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros” are the perfect choice for everthing!… Or “Foster the People” and ” The Last Shadow Puppets”… All this talk of music is making me happy… 🙂

  • I’ve been reading your blog for six months now and it has become one of my favourites. Your wedding was, quite frankly, awesome! And your shop looks lush. Not to mention your lovely husband. Music wise, I am listening to the latest Arcade Fire more than is strictly necessary, but also John Grant (Queen of Denmark), The Antlers (Burst Apart), White Denim (D) and Lykke Li (Wounded Rhymes). On repeat. I even bore myself with them! But that’s love. Keep up the good work and adorable clothes. xx

  • Ps. I forgot Wild Beasts. They are brilliant and British. Their album is called Smother and the lead singer’s falsetto voice is incredible. Enjoy!

  • Musicc!

    Dreamy:
Two At A Time by Shelly Fraley
A Little Bit by Madi Diaz
    Breathe by Rowan
Love To You by The Summer Set
Mona Lisa by The Summer Set

  • When I worked in retail, I pretty much lived off a constant music diet of Neko Case! Other shop girl favourites included the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Michael Jackson, Feist, Amy Winehouse, Attack in Black and Josh Ritter. I also recommend the David Wax Museum!

  • Dear Elsie,
I’m new to your blog, but you’ve already inspired many of my last “looks of the day”.

I wonder if you’ve ever heard of “The Whitest Boy Alive”? It’s a band of the Norwegian musician Erlend Oye, whose other band is “Kings of Convenience” – great acoustic dream-and-sing-along music, two guys and two guitars, plus a bit of cello, violin and percussion. They would be perfect for the store!
Anyway, Whitest Boy alive make great dance-to music, they started out as electronic but play everything live. They’re great to mix things up a bit and get people moving.

    Cheers,
    Inga

  • You might want to check out
Grizzly Bear (Yellow House and Horn Of Plenty are my favs)
    Slowdive (Souvlaki)
    Castledoor (Follow The Dove)

  • Shamelessly biased promotion here: my hubby’s band, Electric Leaves, makes great music. The first EP called “Apple” is still my fave. What if you woke up in New York City with amnesia? That’s what the whole EP is inspired by. I can send you a copy if you like:) his band’s second EP is called “Human Figures” and it’s on iTunes. It’s a little more rockin’ and less ambient-atmosphere-y than “Apple.”

    toriwiget@gmail.com

Hit me up if you’re interested.

  • Elsie i love the outfit post! I think you guys would really like Angus and Julia Stone, they are bro & sis duo from Australia and they are very mellow and pretty and she has a cute voice and always wears vintage dresses on stage 🙂 VERY easy listening and what I put on when Im working in the shop.
This is my favourite track : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-aGkuzC9aw

  • Hi Elsie. This is a total longshot, but I make music, and I’d love to send you some to play in your shop 🙂 My sound has actually been compared to Jenny Lewis in the past… seeing as you love her, maybe you’ll like me, too!

    Grand Ole Party

    White Lung

    Screaming Females

It’s meant to be a children’s album but it’s just too adorable.

My favorite song is I am a Paleontologist.

    educational and very upbeat!

  • I ADORE that translucent look with the floral slip underneath!

One of my very favorite bands is Over The Rhine. Some others that I enjoy (both new and old): Gaby Moreno, April March, Belle & Sebastian, Conor Oberst, The Decemberists, Denison Whitmer, Florence & The Machine, The Innocence Mission, Karen Elson, Norah Jones, Sufjan Stevens,

  • BEST COAST. Check out the music video for “Our Deal”! The hair, clothes, and make-up is inspiring and totally cool (I desparately need a Night Crawler jacket). Plus it’s just an awesome video/song. Obsessed with this band at the moment.
