I don't know about you, but I have seriously been loving the recent geometric trend. There's just something about all those angles that comes off so sleek and modern—I can't get enough! The nice thing about trends is that they eventually trickle down into even the most unexpected places. I ran across this metal geometric sphere at a local craft store and thought it would be a fun project to turn it into something useful. Since we are in the process of decorating our studio space and we are all completely obsessed with plants, I thought it would be perfect to turn the globe into a planter. Here's how I did it:Supplies: Geometric metal decor globe (purchased at Hobby Lobby), small terra cotta pots (small enough to fit through the metal openings), several small succulent plants, gold spray paint, balsa wood, heavy duty X-Acto knife, white acrylic paint, multi-surface glue.
1.) First I spray painted the globe with several coats of gold spray paint. Then I painted the balsa wood that would become the bottom of the planter. 2.) After I measured the very inside of the bottom of the globe, I used a heavy duty X-Acto knife to cut the balsa wood to fit into that space. (I had to use 1 1/2 boards to cover the width.) 3.) I used a multi-surface glue to adhere the wood to the metal and allowed the glue to dry. 4.) Using the white acrylic paint, I painted my small pots (it took 2-3 coats to cover fully) and planted my succulents/cacti in the pots. I carefully (!!) lowered the pots through the holes of the sphere and the planter was ready for the shelf!Overall, this project was a quick and easy one, but I think the end result was a big success. It's actually the first decoration for our big shelving unit, so it felt like a momentous occasion to finally place it on the shelf. There are a lot more projects to be done around here, but I think we are off to a pretty good start! xo. Laura

Oh, they look gorgeous!! Would have never thought of styling little plants like that, but it seems simple enough for my not-very-high DIY skills while still making a statement!! love it!!

Very pretty – and love the plants you chose to put inside it too.
Totally agree, the geometric trend is amazing and I love how you’ve translated it! I was also in love with the honeycomb selves in Elsie’s house. Another version of those might also be a wonderful addition to your new space!
Laura, with your spray you make the wonderful things !
That looks amazing!! The gold gives it so much more impact! Seriously, what would we do without gold spay paint? 🙂

Pretty.

What I love about this is everything…no but really, it’s perfect. However, I think I got way too excited when I saw the DIY because I thought just maybe we would be making one of these babies from scratch! It seems like for some of us living in areas without great cheap thrift stores, finding a used geometric statement item such as this is impossible…unless you head to anthropologie and buy one for 70$.
Lovely!
Maybe the geometric globe would be difficult to find… but, it’s super pretty 🙂

A fashion & DIY blog…
So thrilled to see this! I’ve been ogling the ones at stores like West Elm, which run at $30 or more.
This is very pretty! I love the gold but I also like the original finish. Really cool and pretty set up though.
I can always guess which projects are Laura’s 🙂
This is an awesome idea! I have been looking for similar diy alternatives….wld you mind sharing wht exactly its called? I searched hobby lobby but cldnt find it 🙁

Wow this looks so rad! It doesn’t fit my interior, but I do love it!
I love this!! Between Hobby Lobby [just in general] and the approach of Spring (i.e. plants), I foresee some heavy budgeting just to not go broke…
I’m also very excited about the geometric trend at the moment, and I absolutely adore your geometric cactus arrangement!
Looks amazing! 🙂

This is perfect! My cats always inevitably EAT or knock over any small plants I leave out but if they can’t get to them then there may be a shot!
That’s pretty awesome!
What a clever and beautiful idea!
Love it! I thinking I need a hanging one for my bathroom.
Hi Loveleen!
It didn’t have any type of name on the tag, so I’m not sure what they categorized it as in the store. It was just in the home goods section, sorry!
Laura 🙂
Wow – that is so pretty! I really love the idea of a planter the frames the plants inside. You guys are super creative!
Woww, I’m in LOVE with this look! Really makes me want to run to Hobby Lobby right now.. feeling more like Spring every day!

I love it. I’ve never seen one of those geometric shapes anywhere. We don’t have Hobby Lobby. I’ll be keeping my eyes open.
These would be fantastic wedding center pieces for tables! Love it!

Love the idea. Hate that you patron Hobby Lobby.
Love the gold stuff- keep ’em coming!
Such a great idea! I love the geometric trend so much!
I bought this very same product at Hobby Lobby a few months ago. It actually comes in three different sizes – this blue-green version is the large – and HL classifies them as Metal Decor.
What a cool score and DIY. I’ve been enjoying the geometric trend too but I’ve really been feeling honeycomb! Brass has also been a favorite, so they both have been making quite an appearance on my blog!
Laura, this is fantastic! I am so glad you are a part of the Beautiful Mess team. You are really killing it with your awesome projects!!! I can’t wait to see what you do next.
… And I am totally going to Hobby Lobby tonight. 😉
i’m sooo in love with project! i also have caught the geometric bug, and this will be perfect in my space. thanks for sharing 🙂

Hobby Lobby— I’ve seen them a bunch of times there.
Love everything about this! Love the geometric shape, and of course the little trio of plants!
This is so cool looking!

i found the geo-ball tonight! i had to search high and low and i found it HIGH! hahaha very excited to give it a coat and put some cute little cacti in it! thinking about getting the smaller size too and putting it in another room to carry the “look” through-out. hobby looby has a lot of distressed decor products, so its neat that some spray paint can cure that quick! also found a darling burlap bunting that says ” <3 you & me <3" in the valentine stuff. putting that up over my bed! XD
Love the look of the gold and the green of the cacti together! This is such a cute little project!
This is so pretty, but please please don’t send business to Hobby Lobby, as the store is fighting for the ability to deny its 12,000 employees the right to comprehensive health insurance.
It looks gorgeous!!
SO I saw those geometric sculpures at Hobby Lobby the other day and was thinking “Hm, how could I use those in my house?” and I actually just bought those exact cacti from Home Depot a few days ago so naturally this is perfect for me! Thank you you girls are geniuses!!
This is a fantastic project – and perfect for someone who would like to prevent her cat from eating her plants! I did have one question, though – What is the price of the Hobby Lobby globe?
Yeah, but… Hobby Lobby. So, no.
