Go-To Essential Oil Recipes! Make Your Own Sprays

Hello there! Today, I’m here to share one of the ways I use essential oils every single day in our home by making my own room sprays (and also one of these is a hairspray!). It’s kind of cool because when you make totally natural sprays (mine are almost always just essential oils mixed with water) they can function in different ways. You can use them as a room spray, a linen mist (I use them when making our bed and when hanging my clothes in the closet) and they can also be used as a body mist. They are good for everything!

For that reason, our home is absolutely littered with these little brown bottles and we use them constantly.

I enjoy making up new recipes on the fly, but here are a few of my go-to recipes that I have made over and over!

Supplies needed: You will need pure essential oils, distilled water (it makes your sprays last much longer than tap water, so don’t skip this step), mini spray bottles (I use 2-ounce bottles because I can also travel with them—more on that below) and a mini metal funnel set (if you are at all interested in making your own skincare products at home, or any essential oil recipes, you will use these constantly).

Home Sweet Home
An overall nice home scent. I mainly use this to spritz our rooms when cleaning house (or before guests come over) or to cover unpleasant smells (toddler life + two dogs … lol).

Recipe: 10 drops Fir Needle, 10 drops Rosemary and 5 drops Spearmint.

After you add the drops of oil, top the bottle off with distilled water.

This is what I used when we traveled to China and it was so comforting to me. I used a whole bottle of it in our first hotel room in just under a week (next time, I am taking multiple bottles and a diffuser—lol). I love to use it for any extended travel we do to help our hotel room smell like home.

Sleep Tight
Sleep sprays are so nice for home and travel. I always take them for travel because I like to keep the same familiar routines in new places when possible—especially with a toddler.

Recipe: Use 20 drops of our new Sleep Blend (similar here).
As an alternate you could also do 10 drops Lavender, 10 drops Ylang Ylang and 5 Drops Frankincense.

After you add the drops of oil, top the bottle off with distilled water.

Long Hair
I have been working on growing out my hair for the past three years, and I use this for Nova’s hair as well. Rosemary is known to help hair growth and it just happens to be one of my favorite scents as well (I also take biotin supplements, by the way).

Recipe: 15 drops Rosemary, 5 drops Lavender and 5 drops Spearmint.

After you add the drops of oil, top the bottle off with distilled water.

Nostalgia
This is for sure my favorite scent! I use this as a candle replacer. We almost never use candles in our home anyone because of their negative effect on air quality, but we miss the nostalgia so this helps!

Recipe: You can either do 20 drops of Homebody blend (similar here) or you can make your own blend using Cinnamon, Clove, Spruce and Blood Orange.

After you add the drops of oil, top the bottle off with distilled water.

*Always shake your bottles before spraying!

I hope this has been helpful. If you make your own I’d love to hear how you like using them! xx – Elsie

  • Hi Elsie …You might like to try burning Aussie beeswax candles in your home ????????

    • I have the same one. It’s just an Avery label maker I got at target. Just the old fashioned kind. I got it around back to school time but I’m sure they still carry them.

  • Love the recipes! Do you ever have trouble staining your linens or clothes when you use these sprays on them? How far away to do you spray from them? Using oils close to cloth worries me a bit.

  • Aren’t water and oil immiscible? How do u blend them?
Also can rosewater be used instead of mineral water? What could be shelf life then?

  • I love Room sprays! I use a eucalyptus & lavender one daily, and a citrus & basil one on my clothes

  • Hi elsie, love the idea ! for the destilled water .. do you do it urself or can i get the ones in the auto store ??(its used for car batteries apparently)
And yes waiting on the label maker question too 😉

  • Nice idea, but just be careful labeling bottles you’re bringing trough airports – “sleep tight” sounds a bit suss!

  • Hi! I am definitely going to make some of these. Do you mind sharing the number of drops of each oil for the Nostalgia spray? Thanks!

  • Beeswax candles are your answer…they put off negative ions so, good for you! Akin to a salt lamp.

  • Hi! Just wondering how to best apply the hair growth spray – wet/dry hair? roots/all over? Also, do you need to wash your hair after?

  • My wife loves the essential oils and a few weeks ago I made for her a DIY essential oil diffuser from a lightbulb. She will be over the moon with the recipes! Thanks for sharing!!!
